When my daughter Sara was in the fifth grade, she was caught in a rather difficult social problem. One day, she came to me with tears in her eyes, crying out, “My friend Marcy hates me!” She explained, “Kathy was also my friend, but Marcy wanted me to be her only friend.” However, Sara wanted to have other friends as well. Then she said to me, “You should talk to Marcy and tell her that!”
I was quite shocked when hearing my daughter’s problem. After thinking about her situation for a while, an idea suddenly hit me. I quickly got two baskets from the living room. I told her, “At birth, each person is given a small basket. This small one here is yours, and the larger one belongs to me. As you grow up, your basket will grow bigger, too. You can see that your little basket is inside mine. That’s because when you were just born, there were so many things you couldn’t deal with on your own. I had to do everything for you that you couldn’t manage.”
Sara nodded, showing that she understood what I meant.
I continued “As you grew and started to complete tasks independently, I began to place a few more things in your basket. For example, when you learned to tie your shoes, that skill went into your basket.”
She said softly with a sense of pride “I can tie my own shoes.”
“Exactly. As you grow older, you’ll have to take on more and more tasks all by yourself.” While saying this, I slowly separated her basket from mine and placed it in her hands. “Finally, you will carry your own basket filled with things that only you can do.”
She looked up at me, her eyes bright with realization. “I understand. There are some things that I have to do for myself because they are in my basket.”
24. What was Sara’s problem in the fifth grade?
A. Her friend didn’t want her to have another friend.
B. She wanted to do all the things by herself.
C. She didn’t know how to tie her shoes.
D. Her mother was very strict with her.
25. How did the writer feel when she heard her daughter’s problem?
A. Angry. B. Sad. C. Surprised. D. Disappointed.
26. What did Sara realize at the end of the story?
A. Following parents’ advice helps solve problems.
B. Doing some things for herself is a part of growth.
C. Communicating properly helps make more friends.
D. Telling the truth is necessary for understanding each other.
C
Can you think of someone who is a great communicator? He should be able to speak confidently in different situations, like presentations, group discussions, and activities. He also needs to be good at listening, understanding how groups work, and helping everyone make decisions together.
There’s an interesting finding about group work in classrooms: while cooperative learning can be very effective (有效的), just putting students into groups often doesn’t work well. The key is to teach them how to work together effectively. Teachers play a big role in this by working together with students.
To make group work effective, teachers first need to help students understand why group activities are important. More importantly, they need to teach students how to have reasonable discussions, which are called Exploratory Talks. This means considering everyone’s ideas, giving reasons for opinions, and making decisions together. In Exploratory Talks, people think critically (批判性地) and in a helpful way about each other’s ideas, invite others to share, and ask for more details (细节).
Good cooperation needs reasonable discussions, which can be helped by setting some “Ground Rules” for Exploratory Talks. These rules guide how to ask for information, give reasons, and look for ideas. Ground Rules help students work together to find answers, respect each other’s opinions, and develop their own ideas. For example, students learn to ask, “What do you think? Why?” and listen carefully to each other’s answers to reach reasonable conclusions (结论).
participate in group work
Exploratory Talks make group activities a strong learning tool. Certain activities, like Talking Points, are very effective in starting these discussions. Talking Points are statements that encourage students to share what they know and what they’re unsure about on a certain topic. Research shows that Talking Points get more creative and detailed answers than common questions. They help students focus on the topic, compare their ideas with others, and see that their ideas can grow with new information.
Talking Points also highlight that classmates are a valuable source (来源) of new thoughts. With good guidance, students will start to have a flood of ideas and learn to fully participate not only in education but also in life. This method helps students get more into learning, share their thoughts, and learn from each other, making their school life and everyday skills better.
27. According to the passage, which is probably the best example of Exploratory Talks?
A. Some group members are following their leader.
B. A group of students are arguing without listening.
C. Some classmates are working in silence on their own.
D. A team of students are discussing a poem and reasoning.
28. Why should Ground Rules be set for the students?
A. To make group activities more like a game.
B. To let students have more free time in class.
C. To encourage students to compete with each other.
D. To help students communicate and think reasonably.
29. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Well-designed discussion activities are important for group work.
B. A great communicator is an excellent decision maker in group work.
C. Talking Points can be used to grade students’ performance at school.
D. Students should focus on conclusions instead of details in the discussion.
D
In today’s high-speed world, it’s easy to get caught up in the daily tasks and forget about those that bring us joy. As you create your goals for 2025, consider adding one to experience more flow. Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi has called flow “the secret to happiness”. Flow is a state of positive experience which is characterized by great joy that makes a life worth living. Each of us can bring it into our everyday lives.
the book named Flow
When people feel flow, they are in a state of strong focus. Their thoughts center on an experience rather than on themselves. They lose a sense of time and feel as if their actions and awareness become one. Flow appears when both the task’s challenge and skill level are high. People will not feel flow when they are doing the dishes. Csikszentmihalyi’s research in the 1970s was aimed at people doing tasks they enjoyed. He studied swimmers, music composers, dancers, mountain climbers and other athletes. He found out that as long as that task’s challenge is high, and so are your skills, you should be able to achieve flow.
Flow is seen as “the secret to happiness”. For one thing, the experience can help people work towards their long-term goals. Research shows that taking a break to feel flow can improve one’s self-control, goal-achieving and well-being. A recent study also shows that flow could make people resilient in the face of difficulty. Part of this is because flow can help redirect thoughts away from something stressful to something enjoyable. In fact, studies have shown that experiencing flow can help guard against sadness and burnout.
What is going on in the brain during flow? Studies show that the experience is connected with increasing excitement in brain parts related to feeling satisfied. This may be one reason why flow feels so enjoyable and why people are so focused on tasks that make them feel flow. Research also shows that when people are in “flow”, there’s less activity in brain parts that deal with self-focus and negative thoughts. This may help explain why feeling flow can help distract (转移) people from worry. However, the above-mentioned studies were related, not causal (随意的). Further study of this connection is of great importance.
30. According to the passage, flow is most likely to appear when someone is ________.
A. attending a concert of his favorite singer B. playing chess against a strong competitor
C. doing daily chores for his family members D. sharing his traveling experience with friends
31. Flow is called “the secret to happiness” partly because it can help ________.
A turn difficult tasks into easier ones B. draw people away from bad thoughts
C. remind people to take necessary breaks D. break long-term goals into shorter ones
32. What does the word “resilient” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. Easily influenced. B. Achieve a great improvement.
C. Completely fail. D. Able to become strong again.
33. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. When does the state of “flow” appear? B. What happens in our brain during “flow”?
C. Why does experiencing “flow” feel so good? D. How can “flow” be achieved in everyday life?

Four Great New Inventions
China’s “Four Great New Inventions” in modern times have made the daily life of the public more and more convenient. They are the high-speed railway (HSR), shopping online, shared bikes and mobile phone payment.
Living in Singapore, I had only read about these technologies through newspapers, TV, and the Internet. But last October, I traveled to China and had the chance to experience all of them for the first time.
As it was Golden Week, I quickly learned that getting a train ticket at the station was nearly impossible because of high demand (高需求). Luckily, I was able to buy a ticket to Beijing online and pay for it through Alipay, which was much more convenient than I expected. It was even cheaper than it was bought in the station. Then we got on the high-speed train. I was shocked at its speed and quietness. There was no noise which the train made while running. It was reported that China has the longest high-speed railway in the world, which is known as a “name card” for China.
China’s HSR has also gone abroad. In 2014, China finished building its first foreign high-speed rail in Turkey. In June 2015, China and Russia agreed to build the 770 km of high-speed railway connecting Moscow and Kazan. In October 2015, China helped Indonesia to build a high-speed rail between Jakarta and Bandung.
Did I feel bored during the trip on the train? Not at all. I bought many cheap and good things in Taobao and Tmall on the Internet through my mobile phone. It’s amazing that there are oceans of products in Taobao and Tmall.
Soon we arrived in Beijing. We got on a bus near the train station. After getting off the bus, my friend told me that the bus stop is a little bit far from his home. I thought we would have to spend much money going to his home on a taxi, but it seemed that he wasn’t worried about that. He showed me some bikes on the side of the street. They are called shared bikes. We used the mobile phones to scan the Quick Response code (扫描二维码) on shared bikes, and then we rode the bikes home. It was so cool!
34. What are China’s “Four Great New Inventions”?
