In the past years, our school held many competitions successfully, like Singing Competition, Reading Competition, Dancing Competition, etc. I do know most of the students want to have a reading competition as was held last year, but now we’ll have something funnier. It’s the Pet’s Competition. Well, in fact, it aims at letting students know the importance of loving animals. Nowadays, too many people can’t treat animals well. Some people do not think carefully before getting a pet. You will not be disappointed because our teachers will not be using dull theory to put a love of animals in us. Instead, we can all learn something from a relaxing environment. The competition will be based on the dogs’ ability. Unfortunately, this competition is not open to our pets this year. Our school has selected five dogs for this competition. That means we can just sit back and enjoy, so please come to join this event and keep your diary during the activity. The people who lead it are very experienced in helping countries grow.(国际发展观察(IDO)是中国的一个组织,帮助世界各地的事务。 根据文章“WHAT YOU GET”部分“You can write your own articles about the things IDO cares about and put them on the website.(你可以写一些关于IDO关心的事情的文章,然后把它们放在网站上。)” 根据文章最后一段“If you want to join, send an email with your CV. For more information, please click here.(如果你想加入,请发送一封带有简历的电子邮件。 D。 B I try to be a good father. Cook my kids good dishes, and take them to photo shoots. But compared with Dick Hoyt, I suck. Eighty-five times he’s pushed his disabled son, Rick, in marathons. This love story began in Winchester, Mass., 43 years ago, when Rick was strangled (缠住) by the umbilical cord (脐带) during birth, leaving him brain-damaged and unable to control his limbs (四肢). “He’ll be a vegetable the rest of his life,” doctors told Dick and his wife, Judy, when Rick was nine months old. “Put him in an institution.” But the Hoyts weren’t buying it. They noticed the way Rick’s eyes followed them around the room. When Rick was 11, they took him to the engineering department at Tufts University. Equipped with a computer, Rick was finally able to communicate. After a high school classmate was paralyzed (使瘫痪) in an accident, and the school organized a charity run for him, Rick said, “Dad, I want to do that.” How was Dick, a man who never ran more than a mile at a time, going to push his son five miles? Still, he tried. That day changed Rick’s life. “Dad,” he typed, “when we were running, it felt like I wasn’t disabled anymore!” That sentence changed Dick’s life. He tried his best to give Rick that feeling as often as he could. They even decided to try marathons. “No way,” Dick was told by a race official. They weren’t quite a single runner, and they weren’t quite a wheelchair competitor. For a few years, Dick and Rick joined the massive field and ran anyway. In 1983, they ran another marathon so fast that they made the qualifying time for the Boston Marathon the following year. Now they’ve done 85 marathons. “ My dad is the Father of the Century,” Rick typed. 24. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 2 mean? A. The Hoyts had no money for their son’s treatment. B. The Hoyts couldn’t afford any institution. C. The Hoyts couldn’t deal with the situation. D. The Hoyts didn’t believe it was true. 25. What’s discussed in the third paragraph? A. Why Rick became paralyzed. B. How Rick started running. C. Why running changed Rick’s life D. How Rick communicated with others. 26. Dick and Rick were able to join the 1984 Boston Marathon because ________. A. they got support from a charity. B. they ran a marathon very fast. C. they met a kind race official. D. they had become very famous in the process. 27. What can be learned from the text? A. Love knows no limits. B. Take things as they come. C. Many hands make light work. D. There is no fire without smoke. D 25. A 26. B 27. 根据上文“‘He’ll be a vegetable the rest of his life,’ doctors told Dick and his wife, Judy, when Rick was nine months old. ‘Put him in an institution.’(里克九个月大的时候,医生告诉迪克和他的妻子朱迪,‘他一辈子都会是个植物人,’‘把他送到疗养院去吧’。)” D“The Hoyts didn’t believe it was true”符合题意。 根据文章第三段“When Rick was 11, they took him to the engineering department at Tufts University. “Dad,” he typed, “when we were running, it felt like I wasn’t disabled anymore!”(当里克11岁的时候,他们带他去了塔夫茨大学的工程系。 故选A。 根据第四段“In 1983, they ran another marathon so fast that they made the qualifying time for the Boston Marathon the following year.(1983年,他们又跑了一场马拉松,速度之快,使他们获得了第二年波士顿马拉松的参赛资格。)” A。 C At this time of year, thousands of British tourists are heading to the Austrian ski slopes (斜坡), attracted not just by the snow tracks (跑道) but also by the pretty villages, great food and drink, and, the Austrian lifesaver for parents, the kid-friendly hotel. Confusing, then, a recent survey by InterNations on Expat-Friendly Places has put Austria the worst country in the world (well, out of 53 countries) for “local friendliness”. As a frequent visitor to Austria, I must admit being confused. I’ve had many experiences there, but none that I would call the least bit unfriendly. Take my most recent trip there last weekend for example. Vienna in winter is beautiful and, if you’re lucky, you may have some snow — despite which, the transport systems such as buses and subways continue to work well. Food markets here open early and I began at the most famous, the Naschmarkt, with its two main streets, one for restaurants, the other for food stalls (摊位). But instead of the expected rude traders, I was surrounded by encouraging smiles! So far, so friendly. So, if Austrians are funny, how can they also be unfriendly? This is the place, after all, where they invented a best-selling chocolate known as Mozart balls (after their most outstanding composer), ballet for horses (at Vienna’s Spanish Riding School), and the favourite night-time snack of sausages. Did I say formal? That is, perhaps, at the root of the misunderstanding. Austrians like going to balls and wearing their traditional clothes. They are super polite and helpful to lost tourists. That’s not to say you can’t anger an Austrian. For example, being late is not to be allowed. My point is that you get the best of the two countries closest to them: Everything works (as in Germany) and they like to have fun (as in Italy). And I’m not alone in my opinion. According to the Global Liveability Index, Vienna is the best city to live in on the planet and it has worn that particular crown for the past 10 years. Perhaps, in this situation, the statistics (统计学) have rather missed the point. 28. Why are British tourists mentioned in paragraph 1? A. To show they are the friendliest tourists. B. To interest us with a confusing situation. C. To introduce the topic of tourism. D. To compare them with Austrians. 29. What happened to the author at the Naschmarkt? A. He came across polite traders. B. He lost his way at the food markets. C. He was inspired to smile even in winter. D. He was confused by the transportation systems. 30. What do we know about Austrians? A. They are serious. B. They like to be on time. C. They are unfriendly. D. They like formal uniforms. 31. What’s the author’s attitude towards Austrian’s bad name? A. Indifferent. B. Favorable. C. Unclear. D. Opposed. B 29. A 30. B 31. 根据第一段 “At this time of year, thousands of British tourists are heading to the Austrian ski slopes (斜坡), attracted not just by the snow tracks (跑道) but also by the pretty villages, great food and drink, and, the Austrian lifesaver for parents, the kid-friendly hotel. Confusing, then, a recent survey by InterNations on Expat-Friendly Places has put Austria the worst country in the world (well, out of 53 countries) for “local friendliness”.(每年的这个时候,成千上万的英国游客都前往奥地利的滑雪场,不仅被雪道所吸引,还被美丽的村庄、美味的食物和饮料所吸引,还有奥地利父母的救命稻草——适合儿童入住的酒店。 根据第二段 “But instead of the expected rude traders, I was surrounded by encouraging smiles!(但是,与预期的粗鲁商人相反,我被鼓励的微笑所包围!)” 故选A。 根据第四段中“That’s not to say you can’t anger an Austrian. For example, being late is not to be allowed.(这并不是说奥地利人不会生气。 根据最后一段“My point is that you get the best of the two countries closest to them: Everything works (as in Germany) and they like to have fun (as in Italy). And I’m not alone in my opinion. According to the Global Liveability Index, Vienna is the best city to live in on the planet and it has worn that particular crown for the past 10 years. Perhaps, in this situation, the statistics (统计学) have rather missed the point.(我的观点是,你得到了离他们最近的两个国家最好的东西:一切都很好(就像在德国),他们喜欢玩得开心(就像在意大利)。 D。 D The sun is setting, brightening your kids’ faces as they play in the waves. You reach for your phone for this perfect moment. But before you do, here’s a bit of surprising science: Taking photos is not the perfect way to keep memory as you think. Taking too many pictures could actually harm the brain’s ability to keep memories, says Elizabeth Loftus, a psychology professor at the University of California, Irvine. So we get the photo but kind of lose the memory. Photography “outsources” memories. It works in two ways: We either shake off the responsibility of remembering moments when taking pictures or we’re so distracted by the process that we miss the moment altogether. The first explanation is the loss of memory. People know that their camera is recording that moment, so they don’t try to remember. Similarly, if you write down someone’s phone number, you’re less likely to remember it offhand because your brain tells you there’s just no need. That’s all well and good—until that piece of paper goes missing. The other is distraction. We’re distracted by the process of taking a photo how we hold our phone composing the photo, such as smiling faces, the background to our liking and clear image, all of which uses up our attention that could otherwise help us memorize. However, taking photos can benefit memory — when done mindfully. While taking a photo may be distracting, the act of preparation by focusing on visual details around has some upsides. When people take the time to zoom in (拉近镜头) on specific things, memories become strengthened. Another benefit is that we recall moments more accurately with the photos. Memory has been reshaped with the help of new information and new experiences. Thus, photos or videos help us recall moments as if they really happened. Memories die away without a visual record backing them up. Therefore, a photo is an excellent tool to help remember when done purposefully, which is worth exploring further. 32. What is the purpose of the first paragraph? A. To introduce the topic of the passage. B. To call on readers not to take photos. C. To show the interest in taking photos. D. To explain how to take perfect photos. 33. Why does photography “outsource” memories? A. Photos are more detailed than memories. B. Many sources influence people’s memories. C. People depend more on photos to remember. D. Taking photos is helpful for us to memorize. 34. What will be discussed next? A. Situations when taking photos is better. B. When distraction is most likely to happen. C. How to use photo-taking to memorize better. D. How to stay focused while taking photos. 35. What may be a suitable title for the text? A. Remember the moment and take photos properly. B. Fewer photos, stronger memories. C. Photos’ effects on memory recall. D. Better skills, sharper memory. A 33. C 34. D 35. 根据文章第一段“The sun is setting, brightening your kids’ faces as they play in the waves. You reach for your phone for this perfect moment. But before you do, here’s a bit of surprising science: Taking photos is not the perfect way to keep memory as you think.(夕阳西下,孩子们在浪花中玩耍,他们的脸庞被映照得格外明亮。 故选A。 It works in two ways: We either shake off the responsibility of remembering moments when taking pictures, or we’re so distracted by the process that we miss the moment altogether.(摄影‘外包’了记忆。 和第四段提到的“People know that their camera is recording that moment, so they don’t try to remember.(人们知道他们的相机正在记录那一刻,所以他们不去努力记住。)” 根据最后一段“Therefore, a photo is an excellent tool to help remember when done purposefully, which is worth exploring further.(因此,照片是一个很好的工具,当有目的性地拍摄时,它有助于记忆,这值得进一步探讨。)” There is an English saying: ___36___ Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now, however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. ___37___ Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their hearts, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, the heart beating and breathing; it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach and even the feet. ___38___ Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group that tolerated the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny program. ___39___ ___40___ In this way, they help to improve their patients’ condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter. A. 26 Dick and Rick were able to join the 1984 Boston Marathon because ________. A. they got support from a charity. B. they ran a marathon very fast. C. they met a kind race official. D. they had become very famous in the process. 27. What can be learned from the text? A. Love knows no limits. B. Take things as they come. C. Many hands make light work. D. There is no fire without smoke. C At this time of year, thousands of British tourists are heading to the Austrian ski slopes (斜坡), attracted not just by the snow tracks (跑道) but also by the pretty villages, great food and drink, and, the Austrian lifesaver for parents, the kid-friendly hotel. B. Favorable. C. Unclear. D. Opposed. D The sun is setting, brightening your kids’ faces as they play in the waves. It works in two ways: We either shake off the responsibility of remembering moments when taking pictures, or we’re so distracted by the process that we miss the moment altogether. We’re distracted by the process of taking a photo how we hold our phone, composing the photo, such as smiling faces, the background to our liking and clear image, all of which uses up our attention that could otherwise help us memorize. D How to stay focused while taking photos. 35. What may be a suitable title for the text? A. Remember the moment and take photos properly. B. Fewer photos stronger memories. C. Photos’ effects on memory recall. D. Better skills, sharper memory. There is an English saying: ___36___ Until recently, few people took the saying seriously.
