Dear Diary,
It’s me again. Last December, I wrote to you, hoping for a fruitful year. I feel thankful for the things that happened in 2024.
I used to avoid crying, fear, worry and anger, but I can’t run away from it. Running away from it makes my life even more painful. Now, I accept it.
It’s a part of me, and I try to love it. It’s a work in progress, and next year it’ll be better. Speaking of accepting, I’ve been focusing on the positives. Every morning, I look at myself in the mirror and say an affirmation, like “You are great!” I forgot to practice for a couple of days, so let me catch up now.
I like how my energy radiates (散发) in the morning. I’m starting to appreciate (欣赏) my smile more. Whenever I smile, it looks like my whole body is smiling.
Additionally, I love how my perseverance (毅力) is developing. I put more efforts into the spelling bee. I’ve lost a lot of bees before, but I kept going at it. I love my body for what it is, not for what I want it to be. For example, I love my acne because it makes my face look like pizza. In fact, I start to love everything that makes me imperfect, because my imperfections don’t tell who I am; they’ re just a part of me.
I’ve been working on this self-awareness journey. To be honest, I don’t like to fail, but now I change a little. I know my failures strengthen me. I’ve learned that I have to live through the bad parts to appreciate the good parts more.
I am excited to start the new year. I can’t wait to see the people I’ll meet, laugh with, smile with and cry with. And I can’t wait to see the mistakes, choices and decisions I’ll make. No matter how small or large, I’ll try my best.
I know the new year is going to be difficult at times, but I’ve learned a lot from 2024. That will make me less scared, so I’m ready for 2025.
Cheers,
Dev

Hobbies are a powerful antidote (解药) to stress, causing positive changes. Doing a hobby you enjoy puts your brain into a “flow” state. These brain states are characterized by feelings of deep relaxation, passive focus, creativity and daydreaming.
While a hobby is anything you do in your free time that brings you joy or pleasure, not all hobbies are created the same when it comes to health and happiness. To choose how you spend your time, ask yourself how you feel when you finish doing an activity. Many people, for example, will treat watching online shows or scrolling through social media as a hobby, but the reality is that they feel numb (麻木的) or even feel worse after doing it. These kinds of mindless activities give more of a short-term high and can leave you feeling emptier and more tired afterward. It is harmful to your health in the long run.
What hobbies are right for you differs based on your personality, interests, abilities and resources. A good way to choose a hobby is by considering which areas of your life you’d like to improve right now. For example, if you’d like to add more movement to your life, improve your memory and build friendships, you might enjoy a group exercise hobby like “star tour” night hikes. Or, if you’re interested in improving how you feel and finding a sense of purpose, look into a hobby like starting a community garden or helping elder people learn English.
Is there a right number of hobbies to have? The answer is personal. Some people focus all their energies on the one thing, while others enjoy a variety of activities. Anyway, it’s a good idea to challenge yourself to try something new every once in a while, as something new and unusual is good for stimulating (刺激) new connections in your brain and with other people.
Hobbies are fun, so why is it so hard to find the motivation (动机) to do them? With our busy lives, it can be challenging to find the time and energy, but it’s worth it. To enjoy any hobby, have a “no-fail” attitude. If you’re trying something new, remind yourself that everyone is bad at something the first time they try it, so focus on having fun. For hobbies you’ve already developed, remind yourself that any time spent doing your hobby is beneficial. And even if everything goes sideways, at least you’ll have a story to tell.
Making the time to do something enjoyable on a regular (规律的) basis will have a great effect on your life. Now it’s your turn: go find the thing that lights you up and do more of it!
27. Which of the following helps people choose right hobbies?
A. Paying attention to something their friends enjoy doing.
B. Thinking about something they want to make progress in.

D. Focusing on something that the community requires them to do.
28. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Doing mindless activities brings little joy or pleasure.
B. Avoiding failure is important when we enjoy a hobby.
C. Losing oneself in a hobby awakens the imagination.
D. Trying something hard is a good way to find new hobbies.
29 What does the writer mean by saying “at least you’ll have a story to tell”?
A. You can benefit from others’ hobby stories.

Are you a good judge or just judgmental? In our daily life, exercising good judgment is necessary, but being judgmental isn’t.
Judgment is a natural part of decision-making. You see a line of cars during morning rush hour and judge that there will not be enough time to stop for coffee. However, exercising judgment can possibly move into being judgmental. Judgmental people make far-reaching pronouncement based on limited information. We all know such people. “Anyone who is rich is surely a good businessman!” “Hip-hop fans don’t know the first thing about music!”
None of us can help forming opinions of other people. So how does judgmental thinking differ from making judgments? Judgmental people state their views in authoritative (专断的) terms; they judge what is right and wrong, what should and should not be, what is good or bad. Making a simple judgment, however, does not carry these ominous overtones. “Billy has bad table manners” is a judgment. A judgmental person would add something such as “Therefore, he was raised by a poor family!”
Most people realize that being judgmental is an unattractive quality. If you look around you’ll find that most judgmental people are disliked and avoided. Also, just as we can form wrong opinions of others, being judgmental can lead us to feel negative about ourselves. When we stop being judgmental, we often discover a higher level of personal happiness.
Why are we judgmental sometimes? One possible explanation for our judgmental nature is that we feel unsure about ourselves. By putting others down or pointing out their problems, we may feel a sense of superiority (优越). However, this mindset holds back our personal growth in the long run and prevents us from forming meaningful connections with others. Another reason for judgmental behavior is societal conditioning. We are continually flooded with media messages that set unrealistic standards of beauty, success, and happiness. As a result, we may accept these perfect ideas and project them onto others, leading to unkind judgments based on surface-level standards instead of true understanding.
In order to overcome our judgmental tendencies (趋势), it’s important to practice empathy (同理心) and open-mindedness. This involves actively trying to understand others’ viewpoints and experiences without jumping to conclusions or making quick judgments. By accepting differences and the idea that everyone is on their own journey, we can develop empathy and acceptance for ourselves and those around us.
None of us are perfect. We all have room for growth and improvement. Let’s be kinder and more understanding people who raise up rather than tear down others.
30. According to the passage, which of the following is a good judgment?
A. “She has got a big kitchen so she cooks well.”
B. “People who dress well work in famous companies.”
C. “It’s snowing heavily so we can build a big snowman.”
D. “His good table manners show he was born in a rich family.”
31. What do the words “ominous overtones” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. Unpredictable information. B. Unnecessary consideration.
C. Unreasonable requirements. D. Unpleasant suggestion.
32. Which of the following would the writer most probably agree with?
A. People’s judgmental nature results in their true understanding.
B. People who have impractical standards may act judgmentally.
C. Exercising judgment more often can help people avoid being judgmental.
D. Judgmental thinking makes people develop relationships with others.
33. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To stress the importance of being kind to ourselves.
B. To encourage us to form connections with other people.
C. To remind us to stay positive when we exercise judgment.
D. To make us aware that we should kick our judgmental habits.

Staying productive during school breaks can be a game-changer for teens. While rest is necessary, an unorganized break can lead to boredom and a shortage of fulfillment (成就感). Instead, balancing relaxation with productive activities can help teens make the most of their time off. In this guide, we will explore some ways teens can achieve the balance during their breaks, ensuring they return to school refreshed and ready to shine.
Setting Goals and Planning
One of the first steps to staying productive during a school break is setting clear and achievable goals. Goals give direction and purpose to daily activities.
Creating a daily timetable is useful. A timetable can help teens organize their days by allowing them to set different periods for different activities. Using tools like planners or digital apps can make it easier to stay organized and record progress.
Regularly reflecting (反思) on what has been achieved can be motivating. Teens should take time at the end of each day or week to review their progress and celebrate their achievements. Reflection helps teens not only build confidence but also make some changes to their plans.
Academic (学业的) Activities
Reading is a powerful way to stay productive while expanding knowledge and improving skills. Teens can choose a variety of reading materials to keep their minds active. Writing is another excellent way to stay productive and express creativity. Teens can keep diaries, write short stories, or even start a blog.
Personal Development
Learning new skills can be both exciting and productive. Whether it’s cooking or public speaking, it prepares teens for future challenges.
Staying physically active is important for overall well-being. Teens can join a sports team or explore the outdoors, which can lead to a healthy lifestyle.
Volunteer work in the community can be highly rewarding (有益的). It not only positively influences the community, but also helps teens develop a sense of responsibility.
Relaxation and Self-Care
Relaxation and self-care are very important. Practicing mindfulness, taking care of mental health and enjoying leisure (娱乐) activities can help teens get refreshed.
Balancing relaxation with productive activities is key to a fulfilling break. Encourage teens to listen to their needs and better their timetables accordingly, ensuring they have time for both productive tasks and leisure.

I also encountered many difficulties, but whenever I thought about giving up, I told myself that where there is a will, there is a way. Dear Diary,
It’s me again.

C. Finding out something that they have never succeeded in.
29. What does the writer mean by saying “at least you’ll have a story to tell”?
A. You can benefit from others’ hobby stories.
B. You can motivate others to take up more hobbies.
C. You can show the importance of doing a new hobby.
D. You can share your experiences about doing hobbies.
D
If you look around, you’ll find that most judgmental people are disliked and avoided.
