On April 20th, 2024, he and many volunteers started a five-week activity to pick up trash from five beaches along the Southern California coast and even some beaches in Mexico.
“The trash ends up in the ocean, and animals are eating it,” Ryan told The Orange County Register: “Picking up a piece of trash may save a turtle’s life.” He has collected around 2million bottles from beaches, lakes and rivers since 2012.
Ryan first learned about the influence of pollution at the Pacific Marine Mammal Center (PMMC, 太平洋海洋哺乳动物中心) in Lagun a Beach, which has been saving and protecting sea animals for more than 40 years. Watching sea animals improve inspired (激励) him to think about what he could do to help to save them.
From a young age, he has developed a love for recycling. He kept collecting trash and bottles for a long time. One day, Ryan knew from the workers at the PMMC that saving sea animals needed money. “Why not do something?” he thought. In 2017, by selling 50, 000 pounds of trash and more than 200, 000 recyclable bottles, Ryan handed a $10, 000 check to the PMMC.
Ryan has also travelled worldwide, speaking to kids about caring for our planet and oceans. He hopes every kid can do something.

Are you always feeling stressed? Do you want to get energetic in a short time? Let’s see what Western researchers discovered recently.
A study from University of Michigan, suggests spending at least 20 minutes walking or sitting in a place where you’re close to nature obviously can lower stress levels.
On one hand, a study from University of Alabama at Birmingham found that after people visited their local city parks, they felt happier. “In general, we found park visitors reported their moods improved a lot after the park visit,” said the researcher Hon Yuen. “We did not find a clear relationship between exercise and improved moods. Instead, we found time spent in the park is very helpful to improved moods.”
On the other hand, another study by King’s College London researchers found being outdoors, seeing trees, hearing birdsong, looking at the sky, and being close to nature were associated with higher levels of the mental health. Sometimes, these good results influenced people in a positive way for up to seven hours afterwards.
Exercising in parks can easily restore (恢复) visitors’ moods and energy levels, and communication with nature brought advantages to the mental health in the form of resting and enjoying themselves as well as building their self-confidence.
Neighborhood open spaces, especially green spaces, provide chances for social communications that may help people to further understand themselves and develop social relationships.
With so many advantages, why not put down your work and take a walk in nature?

The elephant-foot drum is the most typical musical instrument of the Dai ethnic group (傣族). The elephant-foot drum dance is very popular among the Dai people. It is often performed during festivals. This form of dance was at first used to scare off evil and welcome the new year. Now it is a way for the Dai people to show their joy as well as their village culture.
The drum-making skill was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in 2011. A young man, Xie Wenping, used to follow his grandfather who made elephant-foot drums for a living to learn how to make a drum. “Making an elephant-foot drum is no easy task, and it takes about 30 steps and one month,” Xie explained.
After picking the wood, one needs to carve (雕刻) the wood into an elephant-leg-like shape and hollow out (挖空) the inside. The drum surface is made of cowhide (牛皮革), which needs to go through several steps such as leather selection (皮料选择), cleaning, air drying and cutting. Then comes the painting, during which the drum is painted with patterns showing ethnic elements (元素) and coated with a protective topcoat (防护面漆). The finishing steps include tuning (调音) and polishing the fur.
“A good elephant-foot drum should have a thick and loud sound when beaten,” Xie said.
The repetion (重复) of the work might not be the most exciting, but whenever Xie sees his grandfather’s smile while making the drum, he feels encouraged again. “Over the years, the number of craftspeople (工匠) skilled in making elephant-foot drums has gone down,” Xie said. “I feel like it’s my responsibility to carry it on.”
Xie has innovated the form of the drum. To make it easier for the elephant-foot drum to spread to places outside Yunnan, Xie came up with the idea of making a mini version (版本) of the drum and designed key chains shaped like the elephant-foot drum. I think people are supposed to save the drum and pass the drum-making skill down. Therefore, we can help keep our culture colorful.
31.What was the elephant-foot drum dance used to do in the beginning?
A.To celebrate different kinds of festivals.
B.To drive evil away and welcome the new year.
C.To show Dai people’s happiness and their village culture.
D.To introduce the most typical musical instrument to people.

③ carve the wood that was picked and hollow out the inside
④ paint a protective topcoat after drawing some patterns on the drum surface
A.③ ② ① ④ B.② ④ ③ ① C.② ③ ④ ① D.③ ② ④ ①

Confucius and Cicadas
One day, Confucius led his students to the State of Chu. When crossing through a large forest, they saw an old man standing under a tree, catching cicadas with a bamboo stick, Confucius said, “ 36 You must have some special skills.”
“That’s right!” the old man answered. “Cicadas are clever little insects. 37 So people who want to catch cicadas must train their hands to hold a bamboo stick without shaking. If you can place three small balls on top of the bamboo stick without falling off, you might be able to catch cicadas. When five small balls are placed on top without falling off, catching cicadas is as easy as picking a ball up from the ground.”
He then added, “But that is not enough. 38 Right now, I am standing under a tree like part of a tree, with my arm reaching out like part of a dry branch. 39 When I am catching cicadas, I only watch the cicadas’ wings. No matter what happens, I will focus on the wings.”
Hearing this, Confucius turned to his students and said, “No matter what you do, you can only succeed if you love what you are doing and pay enough attention to it. 40 This is what this old man has taught us.”
A.You are very good at catching cicadas.
B.People must be good at hiding themselves.

D.People must be more active while chatting cicadas.

Then she cheated(欺骗)her son and said, “I will soon be back. You stay at home and wait for me. If you do as I say, I will kill a pig and make a nice dish for you.” The child went back to the house happily.

One evening, when the child went to bed, he suddenly got up and ran outside. Zengzi asked him where he was going. The boy replied, “I promised I was going to return a toy to a friend today.
