He is a 62-year-old superior court judge, but they are former addicts and criminals. All of them, however, are part of one team: the Skid Row Running Club in Los Angeles (L.A.).
Twice a week before the sun comes up, Judge Craig Mitchell runs the mile from his office at the county courthouse to The Midnight Mission, a social services organization centered in Downtown’s Skid Row — the well-known area where the city’s largest homeless population lives.
At the organization, he meets a group of 30 to 40 people and together they run through East L. A. The group includes runners from all walks of life and all levels of athleticism. Some members are homeless or in recovery, and others are lawyers, social workers or students.
Mitchell developed the program in 2012 after a man he’d once sentenced to prison returned to thank him. “He was paroled (假释) to The Midnight Mission and decided to come back and said ‘Thank you, Judge Mitchell, for treating me like a human being.’ The head of the organization at the time asked me if there was something that I could do to contribute to the organization, and I thought of starting a running club. That was the inception,” Mitchell said.
Every year, Mitchell takes his most devoted Skid Row runners on a free trip to participate in an international marathon. “I come back to the courthouse after any run and check off who is there. And so, I know exactly who has been faithful to the running program and who just comes once in a while,” he said.
Mitchell says he’s seen some participants turn their lives around, attending college, securing full-time employment and possessing calmness. “Running is a way for the participants to build relationships,” he said. “You can be an amazing runner and benefit as much as our fast runners, because at the end of the day you’re going to be surrounded by people who really care about you and want to spend time with you.” Everybody is welcome. We believe. We listen. We support.
41. What can we learn about the Skid Row Running Club?
A. It was set up to make a profit.
B. It consists of all sorts of members.
C. It’s failed to win popularity in L. A.
D. It was designed mainly for court judges.
42. What did Mitchell probably do to make the prisoner grateful to him?
A. He provided economic and spiritual support to the prisoner.
B. He supported the prisoner by finding him a lawyer.
C. He treated the prisoner equally without prejudice.
D. He invited the prisoner to join the organization.
43. What does the underlined word “inception” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Origin. B. Standard.
C. Contribution. D. Distribution.
44. Why does Mitchell check off runners after any run?
A. To check their health. B. To compare their speed.
C. To award devoted runners. D. To make sure of their presence.
45. What message does Mitchell’s story convey?
A. Running can highly educate criminals.
B. We can gain admiration if we work hard.
C. We can make a difference when we care.
D. Running can help build a charity for the poor.

Are some people born clever and others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experience? Strangely enough, the answer to these questions is yes. To some extent our intelligence is given to us at birth, and no amount of education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits of person’s intelligence are fixed at birth, whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.
It is easy to show that intelligence is, to some extent, something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be of similar intelligence. Thus, if we take two unrelated people at random from population, it is likely that their degree of intelligence will be completely different. If, on the other hand, we take two identical twins, they will very likely be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.
Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We would soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this indicates that environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all are likely to have similar degree of intelligence.
46. The writer is in favor of the view that man’s intelligence is given to him ______.
A. at birth B. through environment
C. both at birth and through environment D. neither at birth nor through environment
47. If a child is born with low intelligence, he can ______.
A. reach his intelligence limits in rich surroundings
B. still become a genius if he should be given special education
C. become a genius
D. not reach his intelligence in his life.
48. From the second paragraph, we can learn that ______.
A. Two close friends may have similar level of intelligence.
B. Two people whose blood relation is close are likely to have completely different level of intelligence
C. Two strangers are likely to have completely different level of intelligence.
D. If two people have similar level of intelligence, their blood relationship must be close.
49. The example of the twins going to a university and to a factory separately shows ______.
A. the importance of their intelligence B. the part that birth plays
C. the importance of their positions D. the role of environment on intelligence
50. The best title of the passage can be ______.
A. Intelligence B. Effect of education
C. Dependence on Environment D. Surroundings
D
Courage is a highly admired virtue. When asked to describe courage, most people conjure up (脑中浮现) the image of an individual running into a burning building, or maybe a hero saving the world. But there's another form of bravery that's much more important because it comes up more often. It's called moral courage.
Moral courage is the ability that allows us to face our fears and to conquer our darkest fears. It’s the ability to face the future without knowing what is certain. It’s the ability to stand tall and confront those who oppose us, those who prevent us from realizing who we are and what we are. But most importantly, it’s the ability to stand up for what’s right, even though there are risks that stand in your way. Sara Anderson once said that "It takes great courage to faithfully follow what we know to be true."
The potential of showing moral courage has the power of changing the world. It was because of the moral courage that Mahatma Gandhi was able to make India free from British rule. He fought bravely against them without the use of any weapon by presenting great moral courage. In this way, he also became a great example for the people of the whole world. It is not that we remember Gandhi because of his body or beauty. We remember him because of the great ideas and principles of his life.
Moral courage is essential not only for a noble life, but a happy one. Without moral courage, we have no control over our lives. Our fears destroy our spirit and make us trapped in depression. Mark Twain said, “Courage is not the absence of fear but the resistance of fear, the mastery of fear.” If our fears cause us to lose confidence in the power of virtue, we will lose something very precious.
People with moral courage rarely get medals, but it is the best marker of true character and a virtue others can be proud of. We must try to develop the power of moral courage that will surely help in ending injustice and wrong and grant us a better world.
51. What is the main function of Paragraph 1?
A. To make a comparison.
B. To propose a definition.
C. To introduce the subject.
D. To provide the background.
52. In the author’s view, moral courage is not _________.
A. the willingness to face and conquer fears
B. the capacity to stick to what is right
C. the ability to confront opponents
D the desire to control whoever opposes you
53. What does the example of Mahatma Gandhi tell us?
A. Moral courage can make a difference to the world.
B. Moral courage makes people faithfully follow the truth.
C. Moral courage is essential for leading a happy life.
D. Moral courage restricts great ideas and principles.
54. What can be inferred from Mark Twain’s words?
A. Courage is being brave without any fear.
B. Courage is a spirit to overcome the fear.
C. Having a fear can limit our future lives.
D. Fear can stop us from achieving our goals.
55. What does the author advise us to do in the last paragraph?
A. To end injustice and wrong.
B. To pursue excellent virtues.
C. To strengthen moral courage.
D. To create a better world.

When a special occasion arrives, a colorful gift bag or a box often finds its way to a doorstep, an office desk or a mailbox. But once in a while, a present arrives at an unexpected moment to remind us that someone is thinking about us.
Wanda Anderson of Richland, US, remembers such a gift.
The rosebushes were finally in full bloom on that day in spring.
Seeing roses always brings to mind Wanda’s childhood memories. To this young girl, those flowers were extra special. “We never had money to buy extra things, so even a tired rose was something to cherish,” Wanda said.
Nowadays, to have a garden filled with many different roses is pure enjoyment. Wanda especially loves the very first blooms.
Her husband, Dale, ardently takes care of the roses just like his wife and knows this little fact about his wife. So, on this special morning, he picked the very first flowers of spring, fresh from the garden. But as Dale came back into the house, he was met by a neighbor who had stopped in for a quick visit. As the woman turned to go, Dale handed the roses to her. And even though their visitor insisted she didn’t want to take them, she was repeatedly told that the flowers were hers to keep.
“I told her I was happy for her to have the roses, but I really wasn’t,” Wanda said, remembering the emotions she was feeling right then.
Seeing her very precious first blooms go out the door, she was filled with regret, and a bit of selfishness.
Throughout the rest of the morning, Wanda argued with herself, knowing it was “better to give than to receive.” Still, she wished she could have kept the roses for herself.
Later that day, the couple headed to the post office, where Wanda waited outside in the car. Then, without warning, an older woman suddenly appeared at the car’s open window, with a bunch of roses in her arms.
“These are for you,” she said, giving the flowers to Wanda. “They’re my first blooms this spring.”
Totally surprised, Wanda thanked the woman and took a moment to smell the roses’ rich sweet. When she looked up, the mysterious visitor was gone.
To this day, that “special delivery” changed Wanda. Now, her very first blooms always go to someone else, as a reminder that someone is thinking of them.

He is a 62-year-old superior court judge, but they are former addicts and criminals. All of them, however, are part of one team: the Skid Row Running Club in Los Angeles (L.A.).
Twice a week, before the sun comes up, Judge Craig Mitchell runs the mile from his office at the county courthouse to The Midnight Mission, a social services organization centered in Downtown’s Skid Row — the well-known area where the city’s largest homeless population lives.
We believe. We listen. We support.

A. It was set up to make a profit.
B. It consists of all sorts of members.

C both at birth and through environment D. neither at birth nor through environment

A. the willingness to face and conquer fears
B. the capacity to stick to what is right

【56题详解】
考查细节理解。由第四段中“Seeing roses always brings to mind Wanda’s childhood memories.(看到玫瑰总是让Wanda想起童年记忆)”和“ “We never had money to buy extra things, so even a tired rose was something to cherish,” Wanda said.(Wanda说:“我们从来没有钱买额外的东西,所以即使是一朵蔫儿了的玫瑰也值得珍惜”)”可知,Wanda喜欢玫瑰是因为玫瑰唤起了她童年的回忆,并且那时她买不起。故答案为:Roses bring Wanda’s childhood memories and at that time she couldn’t afford them.
【57题详解】
考查词句猜测。由第五段中“Wanda especially loves the very first blooms.(Wanda特别喜欢第一朵花)”和第六段中“Her husband, Dale, ardently takes care of the roses just like his wife and knows this little fact about his wife. (她的丈夫,Dale,像他的妻子一样ardently照顾玫瑰,并且知道他妻子的这个小事实)”可知,Wanda的丈夫Dale很了解妻子特别喜欢初开的花朵的这一点,所以专心地照料着这些玫瑰。由此可知,划线单词意思为“专心地”。故答案为:Dedicatedly./Devotedly.

【59题详解】
考查细节理解。由倒数第四段中“Then, without warning, an older woman suddenly appeared at the car’s open window, with a bunch of roses in her arms.(然后,毫无预警地,一位老妇人突然出现在敞开的车窗前,手里抱着一束玫瑰)”,倒数第三段中““These are for you,” she said, giving the flowers to Wanda. “They’re my first blooms this spring.”(“这些是给你的,”她说,把花递给Wanda。“这是我今年春天的第一茬鲜花。”)”和最后一段中“To this day, that “special delivery” changed Wanda.(直到今天,那次“特别的投递”改变了Wanda)”可知,从一个陌生人那里收到玫瑰,改变了Wanda对送出礼物的看法。故答案为:The roses Wanda received from a stranger.
【60题详解】
考查开放答题。对于“给予胜于接受”这句话的个人观点,考生言之有理即可,例如,可以说“我赞成这句话。因为给予往往会带来内心的富足,而不是物质上的东西”。故答案为:I’m in favor of the saying. Because giving often leads to inner abundance rather than material things.

【答案】Dear Mr. Zhang,
Delighted to know a new column will be added in our English Club’s Official WeChat Accounts, I’m writing to offer my recommendation to you.
Among the three columns “Career Planning”, “Our Students” and “Campus Culture”, I would like to choose “Career Planning” to be the one to be added, based on the original two columns “School Profile” and “Study Life”. I know that right now a large number of students still have absolutely no idea about what they truly want to become in the future, so it’s quite urgent and necessary to give students basic understanding of what different kinds of jobs are like and what kinds of qualities are required for different jobs. This may help us gain a better understanding of our strengths and weakness so that we can figure out our goals. To me, it’s much more meaningful than “Our Students” or “Campus Culture”.
I would be most grateful if you would like to consider my recommendation. I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Jin
