Passage 1(2024临沂改编)
It can be really embarrassed if someone sees you talking to yourself.
But don't feel bad about it! Talking to yourself actually has a lot of
advantages.
You probably know that thinking is good for the brain. It helps us
do things like making plans and managing our feelings. Talking to
yourself loud is like showing this quiet inner(内在的) speech. It can
help us do better in different areas like school, sports and work.
4
Talking to yourself, especially in the third person, can help us
manage bad feelings. “Talking to yourself in the third person is like
giving yourself advice,” said Jason Moser, a professor(教授) from
Michigan State University, US. Moser uses himself as an example. He
does not like flying, but he has to fly often for his work. So when he is
feeling nervous or afraid during a flight(航班), he talks to himself—
only silently. “Well, you know, Jason knows air travel is very safe. And
Jason has been on thousands of flights.” This can help us to see things
from a different aspect(角度), especially when we're feeling sad or
angry.
When encouragement comes from oneself, it adds to self-confidence.
A study invited 72 tennis players to take part in some matches.
Researchers(调查者) put the players into two groups: one group that
said nothing while playing, and the other that talked to themselves while
playing. They found that the self-talkers showed more confidence and
played better than those in the silent group.
Self-talk also helps to improve memory. Researchers tested four
different ways to memorize things: reading silently, reading aloud,
listening to someone else read and listening to a recording of oneself
reading. Those who read out loud recalled the information the best,
researchers said in their study. It's because the information will probably
become a long-term memory if it is said out loud.

Passage 2
As a nature photographer(摄影师), I have to face the wind and
the rain bravely, but I still enjoy working outside in the wild. One of the
best things about this job is that I can watch animals in their natural
environment.
My favourite place to take photos is Yellowstone National Park. As
the world's first national park, Yellowstone is famous for different kinds
of wildlife, but it is probably best known for its bears. These large,
12
strong animals can live for 30 years. Even though an adult bear weighs
up to 300 kilograms, it can run at a speed of around 64 kilometers per
hour and is also an excellent swimmer.
Last spring in Yellowstone, I walked through a dark forest. The
scene was amazing. An eagle flew over mountains covered with snow in
the still lake below. While I was photographing this amazing scene, I
suddenly had a feeling that I was being watched. Slowly, I turned…and
froze. Only meters away from me was a bear. With water falling off its
thick, brown hair, the bear looked back at me. Time stood still as the
bear and I both waited to see who would move first. My legs started
shaking. Anyway, I got my finger to keep the moment. A second later,
the bear turned and ran back into the forest. After that, I looked at my
camera. The scary but magical experience was now kept forever in this
photo. It is valuable for me because it reminds me to show respect to all
animals. After all, we are just the visitors to their world.

Passage 3
If you feel stressed at school, what can you do to make yourself
happier? Some may eat their favorite food or listen to some music.
Others may go for a walk or get some exercise. A new study found
another great way to lower students' stress—playing with dogs.
Scientists studied 105 students between the ages of eight and nine.
Thirty-five trained dogs and their trainers also took part in the test. The
children were divided into 3 groups. The students in the first group spent
20 minutes with a dog and its trainer. They watched the trained dogs
21
perform and even played with them. They did this twice a week for 4
weeks. The second group spent the same amount of time(时长) doing
exercise to relax. The last group did neither of these things.
During this time, the scientists recorded the students' cortisol levels
(皮质醇水平). Cortisol is a stress hormone(激素). The more
stressed you feel, the more cortisol you will have in your body. What
did the scientists find? Both the second and third groups showed rises in
cortisol levels. The first group, however, showed no big increase. And the
children in this group had the lowest cortisol levels right after playing
with the dogs.
According to the study, students enjoy playing with dogs, and it
helps them become happier. The stress hormone falls over time this way,
which is good for students' health. But here comes the next question: Is
20 minutes of playtime with a dog the best amount of time? Scientists
are going to keep working to find out the answer.

Passage 4
①AI is used in many ways to make our lives
better. For example, AI-powered robots can help
doctors perform surgeries with more precision. AI can
also help teachers by giving special lessons to students based on their
learning speed and style. In our homes, smart speakers and home
assistants can control lights, play music, and even tell us the weather.
28
②However, when it comes to disinformation(虚假信息), “Social
media took the cost of spreading to zero, and AI takes the cost to zero,”
says Renee DiResta of the Stanford Internet Observatory. Large language
models such as GPT-4 make it easy to produce misleading news articles
or social-media posts in a huge number.
29
③And AI can produce more than text. Cloning(克隆) a voice
using AI used to require minutes, or even hours, of sample audio. Last
year, however, researchers at Microsoft created VALL-E, an AI model
that is able to clone a person's voice from just a three-second clip(片段)
of them speaking, and make it say any given text.
④Open AI, the American company behind GPT-4, has developed a
similar tool, Voice Engine, which can clone any voice from a 15-second
clip and no one can find the difference. It has not yet released(发布)
to public, because of its possible risks to the society.
30
⑤Similarly, Sora, from Open AI, can produce surprisingly realistic
videos of up to a minute according to the given text. Open AI has not
released Sora to the public, partly because it could be used to create
disinformation. Another worry is that many people will lose their jobs in
the video industry because of Sora.
⑥Though all of this is worrying, it is worth remembering that not
all parts of the technology are bad. AI, it turns out, can be used for
fighting disinformation as well as producing it. Anyway, it's time to think
about how we use AI. We need to make sure it's used responsibly and
for the good of everyone. Plus, who knows? Maybe one day, you could
be the one creating the next big thing in AI!

Passage 5
①People from every corner of the world travel to meet the typical
lovely animal of Australia every year. In today's story, a young kangaroo
(袋鼠) is so lucky to be alive, thanks to two teenagers.
②Nick and Jack were driving in the bush outside Sydney on Sunday
when they came across a kangaroo that was stuck in the mud(泥).
The boys saw the head of the animal out of the mud at Agnes Banks
near the Nepean River in southwest Sydney.
36
③The animal was clearly in danger but the boys couldn't save it, or
even reach it, so they rushed home to get a rope. When they returned,
Jack tied the rope around his waist(腰) and walked into the thick mud
to get hold of the kangaroo while his friend then pulled them about 30
meters to safety.
④“The kangaroo's life means a lot to us, so we pulled out all the
stops to save it,” Nick said. “And we are proud of what we did. If we
see something like that again, we will do it all over again.”
37
⑤The animal was not in good health after being saved. It was then
sent to Wildlife Rescue Organization. It's believed that it was very hot
and the kangaroo was likely to seek for water in the dry conditions
when it got stuck in the mud.

Passage 6
①Have you heard the sentence “With copper(铜) as a mirror, you
can straighten your clothes; with history as a mirror, you can know the
ups and downs”? Today I'm going to talk about my understanding of
learning history.
②Many of you may think it is difficult to study history. A number
of students hold a misunderstanding(误解) towards history study.
However, every subject has its own value, including history.
③History is not just a study of the past from which we can learn a
lot whether it's good or bad. History is also the study of the people and
events that will influence the future.
44
④In fact, if we study history, we can learn quite a lot about
personal stories and events of people just like us. The people who came
before us helped build and develop the country we are living in.
Studying the past helps to see how their experiences have shaped our
own lives.
⑤To be honest, ▲. Some of what we study in history helps us
understand the mistakes of the past. And these mistakes will help people
not to make the same mistakes. People often learn from the past to have
a better future.
45
⑥Whether we like the subject of history or not, we must understand

same as before. Here, students do the teaching.
“This is our vegetable area,” a student from Grade 8 tells a visitor,
“we have grown many kinds of vegetables.”
“Look! These are tomatoes,” another student adds, “and those are
carrots…”
53
The two students have been working in the garden since 2021. They
are part of their school's gardening program. Actually, most schools in
Ningxia have their own gardens, where students harvest(收获) their
special “schoolwork”.
In the gardens, students work in teams with the help of their
teachers. They finish all the important steps by themselves. For example,
team members study what to grow. Then they discuss and plan their
gardens. They plant seeds(种子), pull grass and water their plants.
Some students also grow oranges and apples by themselves. In autumn,
they harvest their “schoolwork”—all kinds of fruits and vegetables!
School gardens ▲, too. For example, students study the plants they
grow in science classes. Math becomes a tool for planning the garden.

Passage 8
①AI (artificial intelligence人工智能) and
machine learning refer to the ability of machines to
learn and act intelligently. It means they can make
decisions, finish tasks, and even tell the possible future
results based on what they learn from data(数据).
61
②AI and machine learning already play a bigger role in everyday
life than you might imagine. Health care, banking, video games, every
search on the Internet you make... , all are driven by AI.
③AI is going to change almost every field of modern life. Stephen
Hawking said, “Success in creating AI would be the biggest event in
human history.” And Hawking added at once, “Unluckily, it might also
be the last, unless we learn how to avoid the risks.”
62
④▲, especially when you consider some countries are racing to
develop AI-enabled autonomous weapons(人工智能自主武器). It is also
going to change and take the place of many human jobs. The same
worries also come from the public. According to the survey result from
Centre for the Governance(统治) of AI, 91% of the people (tend to
and totally) agree that “AI is a technology that requires careful
management” in Europe.
⑤But rather than agreeing with an idea of a helpless future where
all human jobs are given over to robots, some people believe AI will
make on working lives better. It will improve the work of humans, and
new jobs will appear to take the place of the old ones.
63
⑥What's more, machines become more intelligent and they are able
to finish more human tasks. Things which only belong to humans like
creativity and critical(批判性的) thinking, will become even more
valuable in the future.

managing it well are the best way out. Just as Benjamin Franklin once

Passage 9(2024江西)
The Maori arrived in New Zealand from Polynesian(波利尼西亚)
islands about a thousand years ago. They were the first people to live in
New Zealand.
70
In the late 18th century, Europeans came to live in New Zealand. At
that time, the population of the Maori was maybe 250,000 in New
Zealand. Over the next one hundred years, wars and disease killed many
Maori people. By the end of the 19th century, there were only about
40,000 Maori people left. During this time, the Maori also lost much of
their land to the Europeans. Many of them were afraid that they might
lose their traditions and language too, but this did not happen.
Today the Maori population is increasing. There are about 500,000
Maori people in New Zealand. Most live like other New Zealanders, but
they are keeping the Maori language and traditions alive. There are now
Maori radio and television stations. Many schools teach in the Maori
language. Nearly one half of Maori language speakers are 25 years old
or younger.
Maori culture is also alive and well. At the center of Maori culture
is the “marae”. This is a special place for ceremonies and meetings.
Today the number of marae in New Zealand is increasing. Many of the
new marae are in the cities. Now people in the cities can meet and learn

Passage 10
Cave(洞穴) paintings are the oldest pictures. Some of them in the
north of Spain are almost 30,000 years old. The paintings do not have
written words. But when we look at them, we can get an idea of the
feelings the people felt when they drew them. The paintings tell stories
of hopes and fears. They are an early form of communication.
79
Sometime between 4,000 and 3,000 BC, people in Egypt and
Mesopotamia developed the skill of writing. They engraved(雕刻) text
on stones first. But it was impossible to carry stones from place to place.
The invention of papyrus(纸莎草纸) allowed documents to be moved
easily. Writing on papyrus made it easier to correct mistakes, too. When
a scribe—the person who wrote the documents made a mistake, he
needed to clean the ink off the papyrus quickly before it got dry and
made his corrections!
80
People made the first book from papyrus and thin animal skins.
Paper was invented in China as early as 105 AD. The world's oldest
known printed book is from China, too. It was published on May
11, 868 AD. In Europe, books were written manually(手动地) until
the 15th century when Gutenberg invented the printing press in Germany.
Since then, many books have been published around the world. For many
people, one of life's greatest pleasures is spending a few hours looking
through the books.
Books will be around for many years. But now some people prefer
reading e-books. They are easier to take when you travel, and you can
download them from the Internet. Now you can buy your books
whenever you want without leaving your home.

Passage 11(2024重庆A卷)
drone 无人机
①More than 100, 000 people cheered at the
breathtaking moment when 3,000 drones flew over
Chaotianmen on the Chinese New Year Eve. The 15-
minute drone show had 300 million views online.
②In fact, drones are easy to operate. People send orders to the
control system. Rotors push against the air to make the drone rise or
stay in the air. By changing the angle(角度) and the speed of different
rotors, the drone flies in all directions.
88

people or record any possible danger. Reaching the mountain village by
road may take several hours, but drones provide information in just a
few minutes.
⑤For weak wildlife populations, drones can show where poachers
are hiding and if they are carrying guns. At night, drones with infrared
(红外线的) cameras can easily find them in the dark.
⑥Drones also provide convenience for the public. For example, at a
sports event, drones are used to give a view from above or help coaches
see how their players are doing.
⑦In a word, drones have been widely used in emergency
(紧急情况),environmental protection, farming, transportation and others,
with more fields on the way.
⑧As drones are cheaper, more practical and less dangerous than
planes or helicopters, drone flight activities have become the important
driving force for the growth of low-altitude economy(低空经济).
Besides well-known leaders like DJI, more pioneering companies have
appeared. At the end of last year, there were nearly 1.27 million

Passage 13(2024广东)
People know animals do have feelings, but they are not sure if these
feelings are correctly understood. In recent years, scientists have done
research about the feelings of cows, frogs and pandas.▲ It says that
humans can tell whether a chicken is happy or sad by listening to its
calls.
The researchers put a bowl behind a door. Inside the bowl,
sometimes, there was something chickens love to eat, such as rice or
insects. Sometimes, there was nothing. When the chickens saw food
104
behind the door, they seemed happy and produced fast and loud sounds,
known as food calls. When there wasn't food, the chickens made low and
long noises to express disappointment. The researchers recorded all these
sounds and studied their waves.
Then the researchers chose 16 recordings of such chicken noises.
Half were from the chickens seeing the food and half were from the
chickens finding no food. The recordings were played to 194 volunteers.
Sixty-nine percent of the volunteers correctly understood whether the
chickens were feeling happy or not, and some of them even had no
experience of taking care of chickens.
The result shows that humans have the natural ability to understand
the feelings of chickens. Hopefully, this finding can bring about new
technology to help with chicken-raising, a big industry in many countries.
Some scientists are already working on a smart computer program that
can identify chickens' feelings. This is good news for farmers who want
to make the birds happier and healthier.

Passage 14(2024湖北)
So far, China has successfully sent a large number of satellites
(卫星) and spaceships into space. Space scientists have been greatly
inspired(赋予灵感) by the old stories and ancient famous people when
giving them names.
Since thousands of years ago, Chinese people have dreamed of going
to the moon.Chang'e Flies to the Moon is one of the most popular
stories. As you can see, China's first man-made satellite to circle around
112
the moon was named Chang'e Ⅰ. More interestingly, the moon rover
(巡视器) was named after the Jade Rabbit, who is the partner of
Chang'e in the story. These old stories carry people's best wishes and
dreams. With the development of science and technology, our scientists
have made them come true.
Kua Fu Runs After the Sun is another story to show how much
ancient Chinese people wanted to know about the unknown world. Now,
Kua Fu is going with the scientists to “visit” the sun, because we have a
space project called KuaFu Mission.
Besides the ancient stories, space scientists also get ideas from
ancient famous people. For example, Mozi, an ancient scientist,
discovered that light travels in a straight line over 2,000 years ago. His
discovery made space study take a big step at that time. So, China's first
quantum(量子) science satellite was named Mozi, making China the
first country in the world to achieve quantum communication between
satellites and the ground.
From such simple things as giving names to the satellites, we can
see how great our traditional culture is and what influence it has on our
modern science and technology.
