John B. Goodenough, whose last name suitably translates to “good enough” in English. Born in 1922, Goodenough was awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry at the age of 97 for his work on lithium-ion batteries (锂电池), which have revolutionized the way we power our world.
Goodenough’s journey to this great achievement was far from straightforward. He served in World War II before pursuing his Ph. D. in mathematics at the age of 30. It wasn’t until he was 54 that Goodenough began his research on batteries, a field he would come to lead.
Despite facing numerous challenges, including reading difficulties, Goodenough’s pursuit of knowledge led him to make groundbreaking discoveries. His work on cobalt oxide cathodes (氧化钴阴极) contributed to the creation of batteries that could store more energy and be recharged more efficiently.
Not to rest on his achievements, Goodenough continued to challenge the limits of battery technology. At the age of 75, he developed lithium iron phosphate, a cheaper and more stable cathode material that is now widely used in electric vehicles. Even at 94, he was not done, as he worked on developing solid-state batteries, which promise even greater energy density and safety.
Goodenough’s professional attitude, described by some as working “from Monday morning to Sunday night, ” reflects his devotion to science. Goodenough gave up many nights with his children and missed important events in order to focus on his studies. “Some nights my heart was breaking to have to pick between my children and experiments, ” he said.
This brief account of John B. Goodenough’s life and achievements highlights that age is no barrier to achieving success with determination and a passion for discovery.
The journey of a man who has devoted his life to science has left a lasting impression on the world for his contributions to energy technology.
4. Why did Goodenough receive the Nobel Prize in Chemistry?
A. His work on new energy technology.
B. His research on lithium-ion batteries.

B. He began his research on batteries.
C. He pursued Ph. D. in mathematics.
D. He became a soldier in World War II.
6. What did Goodenough have to give up to attain his achievements?
A. His health.
B. His time with family.
C. His safety.
D. His chance to travel.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A Time Is Valuable for A Scientist.
B. Education Is the Key to Success.
C. Passion Is Worth It in the Long Run.
D. It Is Never Too Old to Make Contributions.

Most people think pre-Kindergarten, or pre-K education can be life-changing for children, particularly for those from poor families. But more researches don’t go with it.
An analysis of 22 researches between 1960 and 2016 showed that children who attended preschool were less likely to need special-education services or repeat years and graduated from high school at higher rates. But the improvements were small.
One research published in 2021 of pre-K programmes in Boston found that attending preschool did increase high-school graduation and college attendance, but did not affect test scores in one’ s teenage years.
The new research makes the situation even more complex. Researchers at Vanderbilt University followed nearly 3 000 Tennessee children from poor families, some of whom were randomly (随机地) arranged a free pre-K programme. Like previous studies, they found that attending preschool made children better-prepared for kindergarten. But the benefits ended there. In their teenage years, they actually performed worse on tests and behavior.
Between third and sixth grade, the children who attended preschool did worse on tests, with lower school attendance and more rule-breaking incidents.
The biggest differences were in sixth grade, where scores in reading and maths were between 1% and 4% lower than for children who didn’t take part in the programmes.
So, measuring the impact of pre-K is difficult. Many of the effects don’t appear until later in life. And with time passing by, the effect of individual programmes is becoming harder to tell.
As the researchers say, parenting has changed a lot since the 1960s: parents are more hands-on, and home-educational resources have vastly improved. What’s more, the quality of preschool teaching might go down as the number of pre-Kindergarten classes increases rapidly. Teacher-student ratios in Tennessee are twice as high as before, but America has the third-lowest spending on early-childhood education among 36 mostly rich OECD countries.
By the way, even if pre-K programs are no better than the options available, they still offer assistance in different ways. They allow parents to return to work. A number of papers have found that the economic benefits of child-care or pre-K programmes vastly outweigh the costs.
8. What is the finding of the new research at Vanderbilt University?
A. Pre-K had no effect on test scores in teen years.
B. Pre-K had no benefit to children’s behavior later on.
C. Children attending pre-K did worse in school later on.
D. Children attending pre-K improved scores in teen years.
9. Which factor may lead to low-quality preschool teaching?
A. The drop of teacher-student ratios.
B. The increasing number of pre-K classes.
C. The economic support for pre-K education.
D. The involvement of parents in the programs.
10. What is one of the benefits of pre-K programs mentioned in the text?
A. They improve children’s test scores.
B. They enable parents to go back to work.
C. They decrease the expenses of education.
D. They offer economic assistance to families.
11. What is the author’s attitude to pre-K programmes?
A. Indifferent. B. Positive.
C. Objective. D. Supportive.
D
Researchers say a number of bird species are in danger of dying out due to habitat loss and nesting places disappearance.
These birds depend on previous flight paths across countries which frequently fail to protect the spots where birds can rest, recover, and feed. Researchers examined the migration (迁徙) routes of almost 1, 500 bird species, finding that nearly 91% of them passed through dangerous areas.
The primary threat to these migratory birds is the process in which towns grow larger as more people come to live in there. Buildings and pavements have covered the places where birds stop and feed as they move from one part of the world to another. A researcher involved in the study remarked, “Numerous habitats have been lost due to the growth of urban industry, and agriculture. ”
Researchers explain that the core problem is that many of these tiny birds die during their migration due to the absence of safe places to eat and rest. Without these stops, they cannot rebuild their energy for the next parts of their trip. Countries in North Africa, Central Asia, and on the East Asian shores are facing the issue of protecting land for birds conservation.
The researchers say these countries do not have enough areas that are safe for birds. One species that is extinct now is the Eskimo curlew, with one scientist saying, “With each species we lose, our world becomes a little less rich. ”
The researchers emphasize the need for international collaboration to establish safe rest areas for birds that cross national borders. They stress this by pointing out that although one country may establish protected areas for migratory birds, the absence of similar protections in a neighboring country could result in a bird’s death.
Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, one researcher suggests small but meaningful changes, like enlarging the growth of native plants or taking steps to prevent domestic cats from entering bird-populated zones, which could greatly improve the safety and survival rates of these winged travelers.
12. What is the elementary threat to migratory birds?
A. Animal hunters.
B City development.
C. Lack of water.
D. Natural disasters.
13. What does the underlined words “collaboration” in paragraph 6 mean?
A. Partnership. B. Organization.
C. Investigation. D. Movement.
14. What do scientists suggest to protect the migrating birds?
A. Putting up more tall buildings.
B. Introducing more domestic cats.
C. Using more poisons to kill insects.
D. Planting a large number of native plants.
15. What is the purpose in writing the text?
A. To promote the protection of birds’ habitats.
B. To present solutions to the issue of birds’ habitats.
C. To inform that many bird species are endangered.
D. To find the causes behind the loss of birds’ habitats.

If you had to choose one word to describe Kevin, it might have been “slow”. He didn’t learn his ABCs as fast as other kids. He never came in first in the schoolyard races. However, Kevin’s enthusiasm for life was quite contagious (有感染力的), so when he joined the basketball team, he was welcomed by all the teammates.
Basketball became the center of Kevin’s life. At practice, he worked so hard that you’d have thought he was preparing for the NBA. He liked to stand in a certain spot near the free-throw line and shoot baskets. Patiently, he stood there throwing ball after ball after ball, until finally it would go through the hoop (篮筐). “Look at me, Coach!” he’d yell, jumping up and down, his face just glowing with the thrill of it all.
Kevin and his whole team truly loved basketball. But just loving the game doesn’t help you win. More shots m red the basket than made it in, and the boys lost every game that season by very large margins (差额), except on… the night it snowed and the other team couldn’t make it to the game.
At the end of the season, the boys played in the tournament. As the last-place team, they drew the unfortunate spot of playing against the first-place team — the tall, undefeated first-place team. The game went pretty much as expected, and near the middle of the fourth quarter Kevin’s team stood nearly 30 points behind.
At that point, one of Kevin’s teammates called time-out. He came to the side, “Coach, ” said the boy, “This is our last game and I know that Kevin has played in every game, but he’s never scored a basket. I think we should let Kevin score a basket.” With the game completely out of reach, the idea seemed reasonable, so plans were made.

1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

Paragraph 1:
When they went back on the court, the game carried on.

Researchers at Vanderbilt University followed nearly 3, 000 Tennessee children from poor families, some of whom were randomly (随机地) arranged a free pre-K programme.
B. Positive.
C. Objective. D. Supportive.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. B 11. C

B. City development.
C. Lack of water.
D. Natural disasters.
13. What does the underlined words “collaboration” in paragraph 6 mean?
A. Partnership. B. Organization.
C. Investigation. D. Movement.
14. What do scientists suggest to protect the migrating birds?
A. Putting up more tall buildings.
B. Introducing more domestic cats.
C Using more poisons to kill insects.

【答案】范文
Paragraph 1: When they went back on the court, the game carried on. Every time Kevin’s team got the basketball, they passed it to Kevin, who was to stand in his special spot near the free-throw line. The first few times, Kevin was so nervous that he missed the shot. Kevin’s face fell, his eyes filled with disappointment and self-doubt. But his teammates kept encouraging him, shouting, “Kevin, you can do it!” their voices full of belief and support. Little by little, the audience started to stand up and clap their hands. The whole gymnasium thundered with the clapping.
Paragraph 2: Finally, with just a few seconds left on the clock, Kevin got the ball again. Surrounded by the encouraging claps, he took a deep breath, focused his eyes on the hoop and then threw the ball. It flew through the air in a beautiful arc and went straight through the hoop. At that moment, the whole court erupted in cheers. “Look at me, coach, I made it!” With the brightest smile, Kevin turned to his coach, who was also nodding at him, hands high up clapping. At the same time, his teammates rushed to him and hugged him tightly. It was a moment that Kevin and the whole team would remember forever.
