A Silk Road Oasis (绿洲): Life in Ancient Dunhuang
Named “Blazing Beacon” after the watchtowers along its walls, Dunhuang was once a vital meeting point at the gateway to China. The routes that joined here ran through Constantinople in the West and Japan in the East. But there was more to this blooming oasis than trade. For over 1000 years, Dunhuang was also an important religious site, a cultural melting pot where ideas, technologies and art flowed freely.
This exhibition provides a rare glimpse into the ordinary lives of people long ago through the remarkable contents of the Library Cave, the documents include personal letters and wills concerning multiple languages, faiths and cultures including Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, Manichaeism and Christianity; and span topics as diverse as literature, astronomy, medicine, politics and art.
Exhibition Highlights:
The Diamond Sutra (868 CE): The oldest complete printed book with a date, significant in Mahayana Buddhism in East Asia.

From a small Vermont countryside community comes the story of a couple who stopped cutting their massive lawn (草坪) and grew wildflowers instead, pleasing the neighbors, birds, bees, and butterflies.
Jonathan Yacko and Natalie Gilliard moved back to Chittenden, Vermont after living on Long Island for many years. Their 5-acre property in Chittenden had a sea of grass that required a whole day to cut. Wanting to do something different, they explained their issue of tiring cutting to a local friend who just happened to work for a company called American Lawns.
It would cost the couple hundred dollars and require a fair amount of initial work, but the friend suggested they turn to a wildflower lawn that would grow on its own. They liked the idea and so got rid of an acre’s worth of grass, pulled out all the large stones, turned over the soil, threw down the contents of a 50-pound bag of wildflower seed containing 27 species, and then waited.
In the next spring, they arrived, painting the landscape with various colors and wildlife. It started with an explosion of tiny white flowers, then came other colors: pink catchfly, bright orange sulphur cosmos, red columbine, and purple foxglove.
The beauty of the lawn was striking, and soon it began to draw the local community’s attention. People expressed their gratitude for coloring their morning bus journey, people brought baked goods, flowers, and most importantly, for the two newcomers who had had difficulty meeting new people on Long Island, they brought friendship. Neighbors Jenna Baird and Jacob Powsner were so inspired by the lawn that they asked to work together with Yacko and Gilliard on seeding another acre on their property.
24.Why did the couple want to change their lawn at first?
A.To narrow the size of the lawn. B.To make it different from others.
C.To entertain people and wildlife. D.To avoid time-consuming cutting.
25.What did the couple’s friend advise them to do?
A.Turn to the lawn company. B.Plant a self-sustaining lawn.
C.Get rid of most of the grass. D.Grow more kinds of flowers.
26.What did the new lawn bring?
A.More work opportunities. B.A donated public space.
C.Enhanced local biodiversity. D.A popular friendship center.
27.What does the author want to convey through the story?
A.You harvest what you sow. B.Actions speak louder than words.
C.Rome wasn’t built in a day. D.The early bird catches the worm.

Though brown pelicans (鹈鹕) have bounced back from the endangered species list, they have been suffering from the second life-threatening event in recent years. Large numbers of the species are showing up sick and injured along California’s coastline, and experts are racing to find out why.
A volunteer feeds sick brown pelicans recovering at the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center of Orange County. The center is currently caring for over 100 brown pelicans which have been discovered starving or being sick in recent weeks. During the starvation event in 2022, nearly 800 brown pelicans were admitted to wildlife nursing centers and received considerate care, with only 394 eventually returned to the wild, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
The cause of the current crisis remains largely unknown, but some interesting guesses are flying about. At one point, the birds were checked for the flu that has newly infected so many animals this year. Luckily, none of the sick pelicans tested positive for it. “We don’t have any indication that it’s directly human-caused, either,” says Henkel, a senior environmental scientist. “It’s not a human action of any kind that we’re aware of.”
One theory is that powerful winds may be to blame, as low visibility could be preventing the pelicans from diving well enough to catch their meals, and hungry birds often get trapped in fishing lines. The evidence pointing to starvation as the cause may also better explain why the pelicans come in with injuries.
Those involved in brown pelican recovery efforts note that while you should keep your distance from them, humans can be of assistance by immediately reporting an animal sighting to a local rescue center and keeping an eye on it until help arrives. Such an urgent response can often mean the difference between life and death for a pelican that needs life-saving care. If you are an expert, proper treatment for the affected pelicans may involve offering them lots of nutrition and water, or caring for wounds and giving them relevant medication in the center.
28.What can we learn about brown pelicans?
A.They are newly listed as endangered. B.Their population has recovered a little.
C.They have been starved for many years. D.Their numbers decline sharply due to injury.
29.Why does the author list data in paragraph 2?
A.To prove the pelicans face severe problems. B.To highlight the mindful care for the pelicans.
C.To reveal the pelicans mainly die of hunger. D.To stress volunteers’ role in saving the pelicans.
30.What may contribute to the current crisis for brown pelicans?
A.Fishing lines. B.The flu. C.Human action. D.The weather.
31.How should an ordinary person deal with a sick brown pelican?
A.Feed food and water to it. B.Rush it to a rescue center.
C.Seek timely professional help. D.Give it an immediate exam.

Children of all ages gathered in New York City recently for the International Toy Fair. Hidden among already popular toys were new, high-tech educational products. Toymakers are working to create these products for improving a child’s emotional intelligence.
Companies showed off their products last week at New York’s Jacob Javitz Convention Center. PleIQ is a set of plastic toy blocks. It uses visual reality technology to teach words, numbers and other things. Edison Duran directs the company that makes PlelQ. She showed people at the toy fair how virtual images appear on the blocks when they are held in front of a tablet camera.
On the other side of the center, Karen Hu from another company demonstrated an educational robot called Woobo. The robot comes programmed with educational games and activities. Children use its touch screen face to get them started. Hu described how the robot can help a child who has autism (自闭症). “The child can communicate with Woobo and follow some of the instructions Woobo is giving because he thinks of this as a companion instead of a parent or someone else telling him to do certain things.”
At the EQtainment stand, sales director Jonathan Erickson explained the company’s toys. “The purpose of all of our products is to develop emotional and social intelligence.” he said. Erickson showed off a board game called “Q’s Race to the Top. He said the game got his 4-year-old daughter to open up. “The biggest thing is her talking. And that’s the key of all this — getting her feelings expressed out. Like, ‘Hey, what does it feel like to be sad? Or how does it feel like to be happy?’”
It remains to be seen whether a game or toy can improve emotional intelligence. But toymakers are doing what they can to help parents in their efforts to raise well-rounded children.
32.How does PleIQ instruct children to learn?
A.By playing the role of a companion.
B.By giving direct guidance.
C.By taking photos with a camera.
D.By presenting visual images.
33.What can be inferred about Woobo from paragraph 3?
A.It is programmed to replace teachers.
B.It may be good company for kids.
C.It can get started automatically.
D.It is intended to design games.
34.What does Jonathan Erickson think of his toys?
A.They are quite easy to operate.
B.They can teach children numbers.
C.They help kids express themselves well.
D.They can show their emotions clearly.
35.What is the best title of the text?
A.Toys help to build emotional intelligence.
B.Educational toys sell well in the Toy Fair.
C.Toymakers are making profits in education.
D.Children celebrate the International Toy Fair.

While most of us work hard to shine at the presentations and speeches we can prepare for, we may find impromptu (即兴的) communication scary. Actually, you just need to learn specific skills to communicate effectively when put on the spot. Here are a few pointers.
36 What do you want your audience to know? How do you want them to feel, and what do you want them to do? Having a clear objective paired with an awareness of your audience will narrow your focus. Then you can prioritize what to say and choose your exact words more wisely.
Organize Your Thoughts. When making formal presentations, most people give a logical structure that audiences can easily follow. But few of us adequately organize thoughts in impromptu situations. 37 In fact, the best speakers maintain audience interest by demonstrating connections among specific points, ideas, for example.
Listen as well as you talk. 38 You should do the opposite: focus on listening so that you can better understand the in-the-moment needs and interests of your conversation partners and respond more effectively. Paraphrasing or asking open-ended follow-up questions can help confirm your understanding and provide extra time to think about your response.
Dare to be dull. Don’t feel you need to give a standout performance. One popular saying applies here, “ 39 ” Listeners are more likely to trust and approve of you when you speak like a human being rather than an actor or a robot. Research shows that the most effective speech includes moderate use of fillers such as “um” and “uh”.
The real problem in impromptu communication isn’t an inability to communicate. 40 Fortunately, a measure of experimentation thought, and practice of the skills can make impromptu speaking opportunities your time to shine.
A.Identify a communication goal.
B.He knows most who speaks least.
C.Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
D.It’s being so nervous that we struggle with the talks.
E.We may assume that it’s impossible to do so on the fly.
F.A clear structure enhances comprehension and engagement.
G.Most people obsess over what to say during impromptu encounters.

Jane and Catherine were close friends in their high school, Deerfield Academy, Massachusetts. The two of them almost went everywhere together. However, it seemed that things changed for no reason.
That was a Tuesday, Jane was waiting in the corridor outside her class. She had two exams that day and physics was the first. She really hated physics. Her friend Catherine looked at her from the front of the line, and then looked away quickly. Jane thought she looked guilty (内疚的). She didn’t have a problem with physics. She didn’t have a problem with anything...Miss Perfect!
“Hi, Jane, it’s your favorite exam today,” said Maya, laughing as she joined the line. Catherine was looking at Jane again. “So what’s wrong with her?” asked Maya. “I thought you were friends.” “Yes, so did I,” said Jane, “but she hasn’t spoken to me for two weeks. She promised to help me review for the physics exam too, but then she ignored (忽视) all my calls and texts. She seemed to have forgotten who her friends are!” “Are you listening to me?” Mr Richard was talking to the class and the other students were going into the exam room. Jane gave Maya a worried look and followed them.
Jane couldn’t answer question number five. She looked up and saw Catherine sitting two rows in front of her. Jane couldn’t believe it! Catherine was holding her phone on her knee under the table and reading on it. Is that how Catherine always got such good grades? She felt really angry at Catherine, but she didn’t know what to do. She thought about telling the teacher, but what would everyone else think of her? “Stop writing and put your pens down,” said Mr Richard as he started to collect the exam papers.
Jane wanted to talk to Catherine at lunchtime, but she couldn’t find her anywhere. The next exam was history. That was Jane’s favorite subject but she wasn’t feeling good. She didn’t know what to do about Catherine. “It wasn't fair!” she thought. “Catherine was getting good grades by cheating all the time.” Just then, Mr Richard walked past her table. “Mr Richard...”

【答案】18.A 19.C 20.B
This summer I joined a two-week summer camp in China. The camp was for language learning. The other campers and I learned Chinese through activities like storytelling and role-playing. In the first week, to use the vocabulary we’d learned in real-world situations, we were encouraged to buy vegetables at the market and book entry tickets to the museum. During the second week, the activities were richer. We attended classes in traditional Chinese art in the first three days, such as fan painting, paper cutting and Chinese calligraphy. It was so cool to drive out the summer heat with a fan (扇子) painted by myself. Then the following day we went to eat traditional food there. We also spent two days visiting some places of interest, learning about the local history of the area. In the last day of our camp, we had a sharing session, during which we were asked to describe the part we like best of our camp. It was a hard choice. For me, every activity was fun — Chinese culture, the food and people all impressed me deeply. I hope to come again in the future.

Wanting to do something different, they explained their issue of tiring cutting to a local friend who just happened to work for a company called American Lawns.
根据第三段中的“It would cost the couple hundred dollars and require a fair amount of initial work, but the friend suggested they turn to a wildflower lawn that would grow on its own. They liked the idea and so got rid of an acre’s worth of grass, pulled out all the large stones, turned over the soil, threw down the contents of a 50-pound bag of wildflower seed containing 27 species, and then waited. (这对夫妇需要花费几百美元并进行相当数量的前期工作,但朋友建议他们改用一种能够自我生长的野花草坪。他们喜欢这个想法,于是清除了大约一英亩的草坪,拔出了所有大石头,翻动了土壤,撒下了一袋重达50磅、包含27种种子的野花种子,然后等待)”可知,朋友建议他们种一个可以自我维持的野花草坪。故选B。

【答案】36.A 37.F 38.G 39.C 40.D

37.下文“In fact, the best speakers maintain audience interest by demonstrating connections among specific points, ideas, for example. (事实上,最好的演讲者通过展示特定点和想法之间的联系来保持听众兴趣。)”说明优秀的讲话需要有一定的逻辑结构,因此F项“A clear structure enhances comprehension and engagement. (清晰的结构增强理解和参与度。)”与下文一致,故选F。
38.下文“You should do the opposite: focus on listening so that you can better understand the in-the-moment needs and interests of your conversation partners and respond more effectively. (你应该做相反的事情:专注于倾听,这样你就能更好地理解对话伙伴的即时需求和兴趣,并更有效地回应。)”说明在谈话中,我们应该更加注重倾听而不是说话,因此G项“Most people obsess over what to say during impromptu encounters. (大多数人在即兴场合过于纠结于该说什么。)”与下文的do the opposite逻辑相符,故选G。
39.下文“Listeners are more likely to trust and approve of you when you speak like a human being rather than an actor or a robot. (当你像一个人而不是演员或机器人那样说话时,听众更可能信任和赞同你。)”说明想要让对方更加信任自己,我们不应该像机器人那样发挥完美,机械回答,应该更像人类一样,有一些小错误,因此C项“Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good. (不要让完美成为好的敌人。)”与下文相一致,故选C。
40.下文“Fortunately, a measure of experimentation thought, and practice of the skills can make impromptu speaking opportunities your time to shine. (幸运的是,一些实验性思考和技能实践可以使即兴演讲机会成为你发光的时刻。)”可知通过这些小技巧,可以让人们在谈话中发挥出色,从而就不会紧张,因此D项“It’s being so nervous that we struggle with the talks. (正是因为我们太紧张,所以我们在谈话中挣扎。)”与下文相一致,故选D。

【答案】
56.Known 57.to honor 58.have played 59.a 60.enabling 61.which 62.recognition 63.its 64.to 65.basically
故填to honor。
故填have played。
故填a。
分析句子可知,此处为非限制性定语从句,先行词为前面的整个句子“On the global scale, China has put more effort than any other country”,在从句中充当主语,所以应用关系代词which引导。故填which。
故填its。
故填to。

注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
Jane was sitting two rows behind Catherine again in the history exam that afternoon.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Jane was walking towards the school gate when she heard footsteps behind her.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Jane was sitting two rows behind Catherine again in the history exam that afternoon. Jane was feeling terrible. Mr Richard wanted her to nod at him if she saw Catherine cheating in the exam. When she saw Catherine had her phone under the table, Jane looked up and uneasily nodded at Mr Richard. Catherine was too busy looking at her phone to notice Mr Richard coming near. Mr Richard picked up her exam paper and told Catherine to leave the classroom.
Jane was walking towards the school gate when she heard footsteps behind her. It was Catherine. “Jane, please me. He thought I was cheating. He believes me now. I’m waiting,” said Catherine. “I’m really sorry I didn’t answer your calls. My dad has been in hospital for two weeks. He had a big heart operation today. I was reading texts from my mum to see how the operation was going. But Mr Richard caught sorry I didn’t tell you what was happening but I haven’t forgotten that we’re friends. Will you forgive me?” “Of course! Let’s go to the hospital to see your father,” Jane couldn’t wait to reply.

Dunhuang Star Chart: The earliest known map of the night sky from any culture, showing early astronomical knowledge.
Old Tibetan Annals: Tibetan, detailing the Tibetan empire from 641 to 764.
9th-century Zoroastrian script piece: A rare text about Zoroaster, nearly 400 years earlier than other known Zoroastrian texts.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
Jane was sitting two rows behind Catherine again in the history exam that afternoon.
