Mary Dickins had been a member of the audience at poetry nights before and knew “the poetry clap”. She made a polite tapping of fingers. But when she made her debut (首次演出) as a performer at the age of 62 at the legendary Bang Said the Gun night in south London, she said, “It was so wild — like nothing I had ever seen before.” The audience stamped their feet and shook shakers. “It felt transformative. I thought, ‘I’ve got to have more of this,’ ” Dickins said. Becoming a performance poet has given her a place on a stage of her own making.
All her life she has written, mostly without being seen or heard. Her mother died when she was nine, and, after she went into a care home at 13, Dickins’ writing stayed in notebooks. Really, she says, a lot of her adult life has been about getting over childhood shyness. At university — she studied education — she met her husband of 40 years, but in three years of seminars she did not say a word. Some of this results from her years at the children’s home. She says, “It gave me a sense of what it’s like to be excluded. I never fitted in anywhere.”
After she graduated, she discovered that she loved working with people with learning disabilities. She became an expert in inclusive education. “That was my niche (称心的职业),” she says. She published books and returned to the University of North London as a senior lecturer in early childhood studies.
Dickins now sees that in adulthood she has been giving herself permission to be silly. “The sillier I allow myself to be, the better the writing is,” she says. Her observations are humorous.
“Putting things into words and giving shape to your emotions is an important part of coming to terms with the things that happen in life,” she says.
Does she still feel like an outsider?
“I think I’ve made it into a virtue. I celebrate the fact that I don’t fit into a box. Finally! You have to wait till you’re 62 to feel confident!” she says. “But I have a sense of who I am and I'm proud of it. I wouldn’t be anyone else now — and it took me a long time to say that.”
24. How did Dickins feel about her debut?
A. Calm. B. Awkward. C. Stressed. D. Encouraged.
25. What led to Dickins’ lack of a sense of belonging?
A. Her immature writing style. B. Her experience at the care home.
C. Her struggle with her university studies. D. Her difficult relationship with her husband.
26. How does writing benefit Dickins?
A. It makes her land a good job. B. It sharpens her sense of humor.
C. It enables her to get on well with her life. D. It helps her overcome her learning disabilities.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Mary Dickins’ New Start after 60 B. Mary Dickins’ First Performance
C. Mary Dickins’ Troubled Writing Career D. Mary Dickins’ Impact on Performance Poets
C
We can achieve knowledge either actively or passively. We achieve it actively by direct experience, by testing and proving an idea, or by reasoning.
We achieve knowledge passively by being told by someone else. Most of the learning that takes place in the classroom is passive, and so is the kind that happens when we watch TV or read newspapers or magazines. Conditioned (习惯) as we are to passive learning, it’s not surprising that we depend on it in our everyday communication with friends and co-workers.
Unfortunately, passive learning has a serious problem. It makes us tend to accept what we are told even when it is little more than hearsay (传闻) and rumor (谣言).
Did you ever play the game Rumor? It begins when one person writes down a message but doesn’t show it to anyone. Then the person whispers it, word for word, to another person. That person, in turn, whispers it to still another, and so on, through all the people playing the game. The last person writes down the message word for word as he or she hears it. Then the two written statements are compared. Typically, the original message has changed.
That’s what happens in daily life. The simple fact that people repeat a story in their own words changes the story. Then, too, most people listen imperfectly. And many enjoy adding their own creative touch to a story, trying to improve on it, stamping (打上标记) it with their own personal style. Yet those who hear it think they know.
This process is also found among scholars and authors: A statement of opinion by one writer may be restated as a fact by another, who may in turn be quoted by yet another; and this process may continue, unless it occurs to someone to question the facts on which the original writer based his opinion or to challenge the interpretation he placed upon those facts.
28. According to the passage, ________ belongs to passive learning.
A. doing a medical experiment B. solving a math problem
C. visiting an exhibition D. doing scientific reasoning
29. The author mentions the game rumor to show that ________.
A. a message may be changed when being passed on
B. a message should be delivered in different ways
C. people may have problems with their sense of hearing
D. people tend not to believe in what they know as rumor
30. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Active learning is less important B. Passive learning may not be reliable
C. Active learning occurs more frequently D. Passive learning is not found among scholars
31. Through the passage, the author intends mainly to ________.
A. introduce the advantages of passive learning B. persuade us to adopt active learning
C. explain why passive learning can be bad D. compare active learning and passive learning
D
The old advice to dress for the job you want, not the job you have, may have roots in more than simply how others perceive you—many studies show that the clothes you wear can affect your mental and physical performance.
If you want to be a big-ideas person at work, suit up. A paper in Social Psychological and Personality Science asked subjects to change into formal or casual clothing before cognitive (认知的) tests. Wearing formal business clothes increased abstract thinking-an important aspect of creativity and long-term strategizing. The experiments suggest the effect is related to feelings of power.
Informal clothing may hurt in negotiations. In a study reported in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, male subjects wore their usual clothes or were placed in a suit or in sweats. Then they engaged in a game that involved negotiating with a partner. Those who dressed up obtained more profitable deals than the other two groups, and those who dressed down had lower hormone (荷尔蒙) levels.
Trying too hard to look sharp can backfire. When women came with expensive sunglasses and were told their glasses were counterfeit (仿冒的), as opposed to when they thought they were real, they cheated more often on lab experiments. Authors of the study, published in Psychological Science, theorize that fake glasses increase unethical behavior by making their wearers feel less authentic.
It’s not news to anyone that we judge others based on their clothes. In general, studies that investigate these judgments find that people prefer clothing that matches expectations-surgeons in scrubs (外科手术服), police officers in uniforms—with one notable exception. A series of studies published in the Journal of Consumer Research explored observers’ reactions to people who broke established norms only slightly.
In one scenario, a man at a black-tie affair was viewed as having higher status and competence when wearing a red bow tie. The researchers also found that valuing uniqueness increased audience members’ ratings of the status and competence of a professor who wore red Converse sneakers while giving a lecture. The results suggest that people judge these slight differences from the norm as positive because they suggest that the individual is powerful enough to risk the social costs of such behaviors.
32. What does the author want to explain by mentioning the old advice?
A. The causes of wearing formally. B. The right way of suiting up.
C. The impact of dressing well. D. The misunderstanding about dress code.
33. According to the second and third paragraphs, why should one dress up?
A. To activate creativity. B. To enhance performance.
C. To earn more profits. D. To control negotiations.
34. What does the underlined sentence mean in the fourth paragraph?
A. Wearing expensive items can be risky. B. Looking fashionable can send a wrong message.
C. Overdressing may produce opposite results. D. Dressing up may appear not genuine.
35. What can we learn from the studies in the Journal of Consumer Research?
A. Most people judge a book by its cover. B. Powerful people can ignore social norms.
C. Red is usually associated with higher status. D. It is favorable to dress a bit differently.

“Ada! Milk!” Mama called.
Milk. It was Ada’s turn to get it. Ada sighed and shut her first-aid book. Her head hurt from reading in the dim morning light, but how else was she going to learn?
Ada tied the cow close to a tree. Somewhere down the mountain, some volunteer doctors were teaching medical skills to village nurses. Ada heard Betty drive off hours ago. “She should have taken me with her. She thinks I’m too young, but she’s wrong. I am already 16!” Ada thought.
Ada carried the milk back to Mama, then wandered up the road. Roy, a village boy, had gotten a donkey, and some kids had gathered around to see it. Roy was always doing something to get attention. Like now: he was trying to stand on the animal’s bare back.
“No wonder they don’t trust kids with anything important”, Ada thought, sighing. She had just turned away when she heard a thud and a few screams. Roy lay on the ground nearby moaning in pain. The donkey stood several meters away. “Roy!” The kids nearby ran towards him. “Get Betty,” one said. Ada shook her head. “Betty’s gone to the city.” The other kids seemed frozen in place.
Ada ran to where Roy was lying. She dropped to her knees on the dusty road. “Roy! Can you hear me?” Roy moaned in agony. Ada saw that one of his legs was crooked, bent a little sideways between the knee and the ankle. A broken leg!
She remembered what the first-aid book had said about broken legs: if there is no ambulance, straighten the bone before moving the victim. There certainly wouldn’t be any ambulance here. Ada looked back up the road. The other kids were still standing there, watching. “Victor!” Ada called to one of the boys. “Go get Roy’s mama, and find someone with a truck.” She turned to the others. “Give me your shirts. We need something to tie his leg with.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
Ada then found a strong stick, which she would use to keep his leg straight.

C Her struggle with her university studies.
D 25. B 26. C 27. A
根据第一段的“she said, ‘It was so wild — like nothing I had ever seen before.’(她说:‘那是我从未见过的狂野。’)”和““It felt transformative. I thought, ‘I’ve got to have more of this,’ ” Dickins said. Becoming a performance poet has given her a place on a stage of her own making.(“我觉得这是一种变革。我想,‘我得多点这样的表演,’” Dickins说。成为一名表演诗人让她在自己创造的舞台上占据了一席之地)”可知,Dickins首次作为表演者登台时观众的反应很疯狂,这种体验是她从未经历过的,但她很喜欢,成为表演诗人让Dickins在舞台上有了自己的一席之地。由此推知,当Dickins第一次上台表演诗歌后,观众的反应使她大受鼓舞,故选D。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段的“but in three years of seminars she did not say a word. Some of this results from her years at the children’s home. She says, ‘It gave me a sense of what it’s like to be excluded. I never fitted in anywhere.’(但在三年的研讨会上,她一句话也没说。其中一些是她在儿童之家的岁月造成的。她说:‘这让我感受到了被排斥的感觉。我从来没有适应过任何地方。’)”可知,Dickins在儿童之家生活多年的经历让她觉得自己被排斥在外,在任何地方都格格不入,很没有归属感,故选B。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第三段的“‘Putting things into words and giving shape to your emotions is an important part of coming to terms with the things that happen in life,’ she says.(‘把事情用语言表达出来,让你的情绪具体化,这是接受生活中发生的事情的重要组成部分。’她说)”可推知,写作使她更好地接纳生活中发生的一切,让她与自己的生活讲和,故选C。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“she said, ‘It was so wild — like nothing I had ever seen before.’ The audience stamped their feet and shook shakers.(她说:‘那是我从未见过的狂野。’观众们跺着脚,晃动着摇动器)”对Dickins在62岁时首次登台演出的描写,以及最后一段“Finally! You have to wait till you’re 62 to feel confident!’ she says. ‘But I have a sense of who I am and I’m proud of it. I wouldn't be anyone else now — and it took me a long time to say that.’(终于!你得等到62岁才会有自信!她说。‘但我知道我是谁,我为此感到自豪。现在的我不会是别人——我花了很长时间才说出这句话。’)”她提到自己通过写作和表演克服害羞、找到自信可知,本文主要讲述了Mary Dickins在60岁以后成为一名表演诗人并由此重获新生的故事。由此可知,A项“Mary Dickins在60岁后的新开始”为最佳标题,故选A。
A Active learning is less important B. Passive learning may not be reliable
C. Active learning occurs more frequently D. Passive learning is not found among scholars
31. Through the passage, the author intends mainly to ________.
A. introduce the advantages of passive learning B. persuade us to adopt active learning
C. explain why passive learning can be bad D. compare active learning and passive learning
C 29. A 30. B 31. C
根据第二段前两句“We achieve knowledge passively by being told by someone else. Most of the learning that takes place in the classroom is passive, and so is the kind that happens when we watch TV or read newspapers or magazines.(我们被动地通过别人告诉我们来获取知识。大多数在教室里进行的学习是被动的,我们看电视、读报纸或杂志时的学习也是被动的)”可知,被动学习是指由别人告知所获得的知识。A、B、D都是主动学习。故选C。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段最后一句“Typically, the original message has changed.(通常,原始消息已经更改)”可推断,信息在传递时可能会改变,例证了第三段提出的论点“被动学习使我们接受被告知的事物,甚至有时是谣言”。故选A。
根据第三段“It makes us tend to accept what we are told even when it is little more than hearsay (传闻) and rumor (谣言).(它使我们倾向于接受我们所听到的,即使它只是传闻和谣言)”及后文的例证可推断,被动学习可能不可靠。
根据本文的第四至六段都是用来说明第三段“Unfortunately, passive learning has a serious problem. It makes us tend to accept what we are told even when it is little more than hearsay (传闻) and rumor (谣言).(不幸的是,被动学习有一个严重的问题。它使我们倾向于接受我们所听到的,即使它只是传闻和谣言)”可推断,文章作者的目的主要想解释为什么被动学习是不好的。故选C。
C 33. B 34. C 35. D
根据第一段“The old advice to dress for the job you want, not the job you have, may have roots in more than simply how others perceive you—many studies show that the clothes you wear can affect your mental and physical performance.(“为你想要的工作而着装,而不是为你现在的工作而着装”这一古老的建议,其根源可能不仅仅在于别人如何看待你——许多研究表明,你穿的衣服会影响你的精神和身体表现)”可推知,作者提及这条老建议是想要解释一个人的着装可以影响其精神和身体表现。

根据划线句后文“When women came with expensive sunglasses and were told their glasses were counterfeit (仿冒的), as opposed to when they thought they were real, they cheated more often on lab experiments.”
根据最后一段“In one scenario, a man at a black-tie affair was viewed as having higher status and competence when wearing a red bow tie. The researchers also found that valuing uniqueness increased audience members’ ratings of the status and competence of a professor who wore red Converse sneakers while giving a lecture. The results suggest that people judge these slight differences from the norm as positive because they suggest that the individual is powerful enough to risk the social costs of such behaviors.(在其中一个场景中,一名男子在正式场合佩戴红色领结时,被认为具有更高的地位和能力。

前文“Ru Ling loves spending time in skywells. To her, these courtyards of old Chinese houses are the perfect place to be on a hot and humid day. (茹玲喜欢待在天井里。对她来说,这些中国老房子的庭院是炎热潮湿的日子里的完美去处)”介绍了茹玲对于天井的喜爱,因此G项“They are airy, cool, and well-shaded. (它们通风、凉爽、阴凉)”符合语境,说明天井在炎热潮湿的日子里起到良好的效果,解释了前文她喜欢待在天井里的原因,其中的“airy, cool, and well-shaded”和前文的“on a hot and humid day”相对。故选G。
【37题详解】
前文“Ru says that the house’s skywell helped to create this cooling effect. (茹说,房子天井有助于产生这种冷却效果)”描述茹玲对天井的称赞,后文“Studies have found that the temperatures inside some of the skywells in southern China are significantly lower than the outside. (研究发现,中国南方一些天井的内部温度明显低于外部温度)”说明天井的降温效果是被研究证实了的,因此F项“And she’s not alone in praising the benefits of skywells, in hot weather. (在炎热的天气里,她并不是唯一一个称赞天井好处的人)”符合语境,指出很多人都称赞天井,承接前文,后文的研究发现是对天井好处的支撑,其中的“she”指代前文的“Ru”。故选F。
【38题详解】
前文“In today’s China, fewer and fewer people live in houses with skywells. (在今天的中国,越来越少的人住在有天井的房子里)”介绍今天中国人对居住空间的选择,因此B项“Air-conditioned flats are the main form of homes. (有空调的公寓是住宅的主要形式)”符合语境,指出更多人选择有空调的公寓,承接前文。故选B。
【39题详解】
前文“But a revival of interest in traditional Chinese architecture is leading some historic buildings with skywells to be restored for modern times. (但随着人们对中国传统建筑兴趣的复兴,一些带有天井的历史建筑被修复为现代建筑)”说明有些带有天井的历史建筑得以被修复,表明天井的价值得到认可,因此C项“Meanwhile, some architects are drawing inspiration from skywells and other traditional Chinese architectural features to help keep new buildings cooler. (与此同时,一些建筑师正在从天井和其他中国传统建筑特征中汲取灵感,以帮助新建筑保持凉爽)”符合语境,说明天井还为帮助新建筑保持凉爽提供了灵感,和前文是并列关系。故选C。
【40题详解】
前文“Different from a northern Chinese courtyard, a skywell is smaller and less exposed to the outdoor environment. (与中国北方的庭院不同,天井更小,更少暴露在室外环境中)”介绍天井与北方庭院的不同之处,后文“It is either surrounded by rooms on four sides or three sides plus a wall. (它不是四面被房间包围,就是被三面加一堵墙包围)”介绍天井通常的布局情况,因此D项“Although a skywell’s size and design vary from region to region, it is almost always located in the core of a house. (虽然天井的大小和设计因地区而异,但它几乎总是位于房屋的核心)”符合语境,指出天井虽有大小和设计上的不同,但位置大致相似,承接前文的不同之处,引出后文的布局情况。故选D。

第二节 读后续写(满分 25 分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
Ada then found a strong stick, which she would use to keep his leg straight.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next day, Betty came to Ada’s home.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Ada then found a strong stick, which she would use to keep his leg straight. She gently explained what she was going to do then carefully wrapped the shirts around Roy’s leg and the stick. Roy cried out in pain. “I know it hurts,” Ada said softly. “But this will hold it still until you get to the hospital.” When Ada was done, she looked up and saw Roy’s mama watching from a few meters away. Behind her was a neighbor in a pickup truck. When Ada stepped away, Roy’s mama ran over and held Roy’s face in her hands. “Thank you, Ada,” she said. Ada helped them lift Roy into the truck, then they drove down the hillside towards the hospital.
The next day, Betty came to Ada’s home. “I heard what you did,” Betty said. “You kept your head in an emergency. That’s an important skill.” Ada’s face turned red. “I was afraid ...” Betty shook her head. “It’s OK for a nurse to be afraid, as long as she has a clear head. The volunteer doctors are coming tomorrow with vaccines. We need some more hands. Can you help?” “I’d love to.” Ada replied at once. “Come early, then. There is a lot to learn.” Ada smiled. “I’ll bring my first-aid book.”
【点睛】文章结构合理,思路清晰,使用了恰当的连接词及词组使行文连贯,如“which, until, when”,也运用了一些高级词汇和表达,如“gently;towards;emergency;afraid;reply;step”以及状语从句“But this will hold it still until you get to the hospital.”“When Ada stepped away, Roy’s mama ran over and held Roy’s face in her hands.”
