Unit 8 Literature Lesson 1 The Last Leaf(3) ——读后续写 Good morning, everyone. Today, we continue Lesson 1--The Last Leaf. In the first two classes, we have talked about the basic elements of the narrative or story--setting, characters, plot, perspective and theme. the basic elements of short stories: Review and Share The Last Leaf setting characters plot perspective theme setting: in Greenwich village in cold November. Character: Johnsy Sue Mr. Behrman and a doctor. perspective: 3rd person theme: love and hope plot: for plot the plot: Review and Share Beginning Development Climax Falling actions Ending conflict solution 6. was still there 1. got sick with... 2. the doctor claimed 3. Sue began...to... 8. painted, died 5. the cold rain mixed... 7. asked for some food 4. counted... believed... about the plot, there are beginning, development, climax , falling actions and ending. There are some phrases for you to retell the plot. Now work in groups to retell the sotry with the phrases. From the story, we can see that “the last leaf” saves Johnsy. What is the problem with Johnsy? (Ss) She lost confidence in life. she belived she would die when the last leaf fell down. So we can see this is the key problem in the whole story. In the short story, problems are conflicts. For conflicts, we have solutions. so can you find more conflicts in the whole story? and the solution. now we work in groups and try to find more conflicts and solutions in the sotry. conflict-solution: Activate and Explore conflict Climax conflict solution 1 solution 2 3 C1: Joghsy had one chance in ten to live. S1: Sue began to draw in an attempt to raise Johnsy’s spirits. C2: Joghsy wanted to leave when the last leaf fell. S2: Sue said nonsense and asked Johnsy to sleep. C3: just one remaining leaf and a cold rain was falling, mixed with snow. S3: Mr. Behrman drew a leaf on the wall. Johnsy gained hope and bravery to live. from this we can see conflict-solution is the drive of story development. Today we will continue our story--the continuation of The Last Leaf so could you predict the next conflict-solution in the continuation? keep this question in your mind. Now work in groups and predict whar conflicts will happen. there are two questions to help you. while you discuss, don’t forget the theme and personality. 1. What was Johnsy’s reaction to Behrman’s death? 2. What would happen to “the last leaf”? Imagine and Predict conflict-solution: These two questions can help you discuss. Could you share with us your conflict-solution? Which you do you prefer? why? Great. Because A is logic. why? because of the same theme and the same character. Focus on writing techniques Description Johnsy Behrman ...she lay, barely moving, in her bed staring at a blank wall under her blanket. “I want to see the last leave. I am tired of waiting. I want to go sailing down, down, just like one of those poor, tired leaves.” cried with disbelief; lying in bed helplessly with pain; His shoes and clothing were wet through and icy cold; they found a lantern, still lit and some brushes Until now we have got the structure of the story or what we should write for the conituation. but how will we write? This is we focus on the writing techniques. We have talked about these characters’ personality and evidence. The evidence is actually O’Henry’s writing techniques. Now let’s find out what writing techniques does he use? We can focus on the speech of the words--verbs, aj, adv, metopha, Focus on writing techniques action 01 dialogues 02 appearance 03 04 surrouding So we can see the author uses to describe the characters. Let’s compare. The janitor found him. The janitor found him lying in bed. The janitor found him lying in bed helplessly. The janitor found him lying in bed helplessly with pain. I can’t believe. That’s all because of me. ” Sue comforted her gently, with a warm hug. Sue looked into Johnsy’s eyes, “Behrman hoped you can recover and live bravely.
