B William Lindesay, a famous Great Wall expert and conservationist, and his wife Wu Qi have traveled the globe by the back paths, providing their sons with a unique growing environment. Sun hats, backpacks and sneakers (运动鞋) — these are the day-to-day must-haves for the family. Most of their trips seem far from relaxing — cultural study in the hot and dry desert, a 53-kilometer hiking tour of New Zealand, a one-day climb to three English mountaintops and a six-day train ride from Beijing to Moscow. Many assume the family must be wealthy and can afford their global travel, but they are not. Lindesay says they just choose to spend money on travel and eschew pricey hotels and restaurants where possible. Lindesay mentions the trip to Moscow was an example. Instead of taking a taxi from the railway station to the hotel, they took the subway. “We crossed the city for saving money, communicated with local people, and saw they are people just like us, everywhere. We arrived at our destination feeling comfortable.” However, their journeys, which can last weeks or months, have sometimes been inconsistent with their children’s schooling. Wu remembers once Lindesay let their elder son ask for leave so that they could go to New York for a 45-day lecture tour. Therefore the son missed his final exam. Things like that bother the family all the time. Lindesay attaches great importance to learning out of the classroom, saying that children might score well on school tests, but traveling outside, in distant lands with different languages, cultures, and political structures, is the real test. “You can only get streetwise on the street. You can only get worldly-wise when seeing the world,” he says. 4. How can we describe the Lindesays’ trips? A. Pleasant. B. relaxing. C. Challenging. D. Dangerous. 5. What can we infer from paragraph 3? A. The family must be rich enough for their global travel. B. They arrived at their destination Moscow feeling unpleasant. C. They spent all money on travel and expensive accommodations. D. They crossed the city by the subway to save costs and explore local culture. 6. What problem does the family meet when traveling? A. They have scheduling conflicts. B. They suffer from a tight budget C. They are faced with language barriers. D. They hold different educational ideas. 7. Which statement may Lindesay agree with according to the text? A. Nothing is so necessary for travelers as languages. B. There is no royal road to learning. C. Actions speak louder than words. D. Man who travels far knows more. C In the United States, more than 90 people died across six southern states when strong winds known as tornadoes destroyed homes, office buildings and religious centers on Friday night. Victor Gensini, a weather scientist at Northern Illinois University, called the tornado that traveled hundreds of miles on Friday “Remarkable.” He said the tornado traveled about 300 kilometers. Normally, tornadoes die out in minutes, he said, but this one lasted for hours. He said the storm moved as fast as a car going down a large roadway. Such weather events do happen in December, but they do not happen often this time of year because the temperature on the ground is not so different from that high in the sky. However, people in Kentucky said the air was warm and wet on Friday. Weather scientists said the mixing of the warm and cold air can create “instability (不稳定)” which produces storms and the fast, spinning (旋转的) winds of tornadoes. The question is whether the deadly storm came because of climate change. The weather scientists are not completely sure. Gensini said strong winds are common in the winter, but they do not create tornadoes because the air close to the Earth is also cold. Harold Brooks studies tornadoes at the National Severe Storms Laboratory. While the US has more tornadoes than any other country, tornadoes only form once out of every 10 strong storms. As a result, he said, it is hard to say if the winter tornadoes have something to do with climate change. Gensini, however, said the conditions for strong storms are becoming more common in the winter as the planet warms up. Jason Furtado, a scientist at the University of Oklahoma, said in the past tornadoes happened more often during warm days in the summer. However, as the winter becomes warmer, especially in the southern US, the tornado season will change. More will happen in the winter and fewer will happen in the summer. He said people who live in places like Kentucky, which suffered the most from Friday’s storms, are now living in an area where tornadoes are common. 8. What can be learned about the tornado “Remarkable”? A. It is the worst one on record. B. It lasted only minutes. C. It was quite damaging. D. It only traveled along the roadway. 9 What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about? A. What is the cause of the tornadoes. B. Why the weather changes in December. C. How special the weather is in December. D. What were people’s attitudes to the tornado on Friday night. 10. Which of the following may Harold Brooks agree with? A. A strong storm usually grows into a tornado. B. Winter tornadoes will be a common thing in the US. C. The US has more tornadoes in winter than any other country. D. The connection between winter tornadoes and climate change is unknown. 11. How will tornadoes change according to Jason Furtado? A. They will last longer and longer. B. They will become weaker in Kentucky. C. They will happen less often in the summer. D. They will travel faster in colder months. D Park guards who watch North America’s highest mountain say inexperienced and overconfident climbers are taking more risks and endangering themselves and other climbers. The guards suggest many climbers are trying to climb the mountain too fast. Denali in southcentral Alaska is 6,190 meters above sea level. So, climbing it requires a high level of skill. Climbers also need to acclimate to high altitudes (海拔), which is unnecessary for climbing most mountains in the US. The National Park Service recently made a statement (说明) warning that many climbers in the Alaska Range are showing signs of inexperience and overconfidence. After no deaths were reported in 2018 and 2019, at least two people have already died on the mountain in 2021. “Two others were seriously injured,” officials said. Earlier this month, a skier from the state of Colorado died after falling into a very deep cut in the ice. A climber from the state of Idaho was killed by a large falling piece of ice. The guards made their statement after a Canadian climber was seriously injured after falling nearly 305 meters. He was not wearing climbing ropes. Other climbers reported the fall. “People in a plane studying glacier ice in the area were able to save the man,” park officials said. The National Park Service’s statement named several reasons for the increase in injuries and deaths. They include extreme tiredness, untested body reactions to high altitudes, quickly changing weather, and not bringing the right equipment (装备). In recent years, guards said they have seen more climbers try to reach Denali’s top by climbing more than 2,000 meters from a base camp to the top in one day. This is nearly impossible except for the most experienced climbers. Experts suggest that climbers take 17 to 21 days to reach the top of Denali. That includes rest days and extra days to wait out bad weather. 12. What does the underlined phrase “acclimate to” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Get used to. B. Get tired of. C. Take control of. D. Look forward to. 13. What is special about climbers in 2021 compared with those in 2018 and 2019? A. They are not so confident. B. They face higher altitudes. C. There are deaths among them. D. There are more beginners among them. 14. What mistake did the Canadian climber make? A. He didn’t train himself to climb. B. He didn’t make sure of his safety. C. He didn’t stay with other climbers. D. He knew little about the glacier ice. 15. What do experts advise climbers planning to climb Denali to do? A. Take suitable equipment. B. Build up their strength. C. Do more training before the climbing. D. Spend more time completing the climbing. Increase Your Self-confidence With Positive Daily Practices When you walk into a room, do you feel confident? ____16____ ? Trip 2 Three Days in The Country部分中“Take your camera and enjoy the wonderful sight in Hunter Valley. (带上你的相机,欣赏猎人谷的美景吧。)”和“Time: May 20-May 22; Tel: 63986432; Adult: $50.00; Child: $ 25.00 (时间:5月8- 14日;电话:64639818;成人:50.00美元;儿童:25.00美元)”可知,Sam想和他的妻子、五岁的女儿和七岁的儿子住在猎人谷,需要150美元。故选D。 【2题详解】 推理判断题。由文章Trip 1 One Week in The Mountains部分中“Time: May 8-May 14; Tel:64639818; Adult: $ 110.00; Child: 55.00 (时间:5月8- 14日;电话:64639818;成人:110.00美元;儿童:55.00美元)”可知大卫喜欢运动,将从5月7日到5月15日休假,他可能会参加在山上徒步旅行活动。故选A。 由文章Trip 3 Flashlight Adventure部分中“Put on your warm clothes, bring a flashlight, and come for a night walk along the Dungog Valley. It is a trip full of adventure. A guide will lead the tour. Many of the plants you will see on this trip can only be seen at night. (穿上保暖的衣服,带上手电筒,晚上沿着邓高格山谷散步吧。这是一次充满冒险的旅行。导游将带领旅行团。你在这次旅行中看到的许多植物只有在晚上才能看到。)”可知,露西是一名大学生,对科学很感兴趣,想了解一些植物在夜间的生活。她会选择Trip 3.旅行。故选D。 B William Lindesay, a famous Great Wall expert and conservationist, and his wife Wu Qi have traveled the globe by the back paths, providing their sons with a unique growing environment. C 5. D 6. A 7. 根据第二段“Most of their trips seem far from relaxing — cultural study in the hot and dry desert, a 53-kilometer hiking tour of New Zealand, a one-day climb to three English mountaintops and a six-day train ride from Beijing to Moscow.(他们的大部分旅行似乎都远非轻松——在炎热干燥的沙漠中进行文化研究,新西兰53公里的徒步旅行,一天内爬上三座英国山顶,以及从北京到莫斯科的六天火车旅行)”可知,Lindesays的旅行充满了挑战,如在炎热干燥的沙漠中进行文化研究、长距离徒步、一天内爬多座山以及长途火车旅行等。 根据第三段中“Lindesay says they just choose to spend money on travel and eschew pricey hotels and restaurants where possible. Lindesay mentions the trip to Moscow was an example. Instead of taking a taxi from the railway station to the hotel, they took the subway. ‘We crossed the city for saving money, communicated with local people, and saw they are people just like us, everywhere. We arrived at our destination feeling comfortable.’(Lindesay说,他们只是选择把钱花在旅行上,并尽可能避开昂贵的酒店和餐厅。 根据第四段“However, their journeys, which can last weeks or months, have sometimes been inconsistent with their children’s schooling. Wu remembers once Lindesay let their elder son ask for leave so that they could go to New York for a 45-day lecture tour. Therefore the son missed his final exam. Things like that bother the family all the time.( 然而,他们的旅行可能会持续数周或数月,有时与孩子们的学习不一致。Wu记得有一次Lindesay让大儿子请假,这样他们就可以去纽约进行为期45天的巡回讲座。因此,儿子错过了期末考试。这样的事情一直困扰着这个家庭)”可知,Lindesay一家的旅行时间有时与孩子们的学校学习相冲突,会导致孩子们错过考试等问题。因此,他们在旅行时遇到的问题是时间安排上的冲突。故选A项。 根据最后一段“Lindesay attaches great importance to learning out of the classroom, saying that children might score well on school tests, but traveling outside, in distant lands with different languages, cultures, and political structures, is the real test. ‘You can only get streetwise on the street. You can only get worldly-wise when seeing the world,’ he says.( Lindesay非常重视课外学习,他说孩子们可能在学校考试中取得好成绩,但在遥远的国度旅行,接触不同的语言、文化和政治结构,才是真正的考验。‘你只有在街上才能变得精明。你只有看到世界才能变得世故,’他说)”可知,Lindesay认为真正的考验是在外面旅行,接触不同的语言、文化和政治结构,只有看到世界才能变得世故。因此,他可能同意远行可以让人增长见识这一观点,D选项“Man who travels far knows more.(走得远的人知道得更多)”切题。故选D项。 C In the United States, more than 90 people died across six southern states when strong winds known as tornadoes destroyed homes, office buildings and religious centers on Friday night. 9. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about? C 9. A 10. D 11. 根据第一段“In the United States, more than 90 people died across six southern states when strong winds known as tornadoes destroyed homes, office buildings and religious centers on Friday night. Victor Gensini, a weather scientist at Northern Illinois University, called the tornado that traveled hundreds of miles on Friday “Remarkable.”(在美国,周五晚上,龙卷风摧毁了房屋、办公楼和宗教中心,造成南部6个州90多人死亡。北伊利诺伊大学的气象学家维克多·根西尼称周五席卷数百英里的龙卷风为“异常的”)。”可推断,这个龙卷风造成了极大地毁坏。故选C。 【9题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第二段“Weather scientists said the mixing of the warm and cold air can create “instability (不稳定)” which produces storms and the fast, spinning (旋转的) winds of tornadoes.(气象学家表示,暖空气和冷空气的混合会造成“不稳定”,从而产生风暴和快速旋转的龙卷风。) ”可知,本段讲的是龙卷风是如何形成的。故选A。 根据第三段“As a result, he said, it is hard to say if the winter tornadoes have something to do with climate change.(因此,他说,很难说冬季龙卷风是否与气候变化有关。)” 根据最后一段“However, as the winter becomes warmer, especially in the southern US, the tornado season will change. More will happen in the winter and fewer will happen in the summer.(然而,随着冬天变暖,尤其是在美国南部,龙卷风季节将会改变。冬天会发生更多,夏天会发生更少。)”可知,Jason Furtado认为,以后在夏季,龙卷风将会发生的更少。故选项C。 D Park guards who watch North America’s highest mountain say inexperienced and overconfident climbers are taking more risks and endangering themselves and other climbers The guards suggest many climbers are trying to climb the mountain too fast. A 13. C 14. B 15. 根据第二段中“Denali in southcentral Alaska is 6, 190 meters above sea level.
