Welcome to the English Conversation Hour at Mid-Manhattan Library at 42nd Street!
If this is your first time here, we’d like to tell you a little about how the group works:
* We are very informal. You can talk about anything you want. We just ask you to be respectful of the others in the group. We’ll give you a list of questions if you need some ideas for conversation starters, but you don’t have to use them. Your own questions are usually better.
* Remember that to have a good conversation, it’s important to talk and to listen.
* Don’t worry about being perfect. The most important thing here is to communicate with other people. Have fun!
* This is not a class. There are no official teachers. This is a chance for you to meet other people who want to practice speaking English like you. We have volunteers who are native or very advanced English speakers who will join in the groups to talk with you. If your group does not have a volunteer for the whole hour, you can still have a great conversation together!
* Our Conversation Hour meets most Tuesday afternoons from 1:00-2:00 and Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30-7:30, but sometimes we take a break for a few weeks. Check our online calendar for the most recent schedule information: www. nyplorg/mml/events

Who made decisions for you when you were a kid? Yes, your parents. As a kid, your parents made decisions about everything from the breakfast you had in the morning to the pajamas (睡衣) you wore at night. And it’s a good thing because kids are not old enough to take care of themselves and make careful decisions on their own.
But finally, kids grow up and become teens. And part of being a teen is developing your own identity (身份) —one that is separate from your parents. It’s totally normal for teens to create their own opinions, thoughts, and values about life. It’s what prepares them for adulthood .
But as you change and grow into this new person, your parents may have difficulties adjusting (调整).They aren’t used to the new you yet一they only know you as a kid.
In most families, this kind of change can cause a lot of fights between teens and parents. You want to cover your walls with posters. They don’t understand why you don’t like your Kiddie wallpaper anymore. You think it’s OK to hang out at them all everyday after school, while they would rather you play a sport. Clashes like these are very common between teens and parents.
Teens get angry because they feel parents don’t respect them and aren’t giving them space to do what they like, and parents get angry because they disagree with the teen’s decisions. The basic reason is that your parents will always try to protect you and keep you safe, no matter how old you are.
24. When kids develop their own identity, they may _______.
A. make careful decisions alone B. stop depending on their parents
C. decide all things just by their parents D. have their own ideas and values

C. the choices that teens and parents make

A. Parents have the right to control their kids’ life.
B. Parents should let their kids make decisions by themselves .
C. Kids and the parents should understand and respect each other.
D. Kids should be allowed to have enough space to do what they like.

Peter and John were good friends since childhood and at the same time joined the army during World War I.
The heart of the brave soldier Peter was filled with great fear as he saw his lifelong friend John fall in the fight. Kept in a dangerous pace with continuous gunfire over his head, the soldier asked his captain (首长) if he might go out into the “No Man’s Land” to bring his fallen friend back.
“You can go,” said the captain, “but I don’t think it will be worth it. Your friend is probably dead and you may throw your own life away.” The captain’s words didn’t matter, and Peter went anyway without a word.
Luckily, he managed to reach his friend, carried him onto his shoulder, and brought him back. As the two of them got there, the captain checked the wounded soldier, then looked kindly at Peter. “I told you it wouldn’t be worth it,” he said. “Your friend is dead, and you are seriously wounded.”
“It was worth it, though, sir,” Peter said .
“How do you mean ‘worth it’?” replied the captain “Your friend is dead!”
“Yes sir,” the soldier answered. “But it was worth it because when I got to him, he was still alive, and I had the satisfaction of hearing him say, ‘Peter, I knew you’d come.’ ”

Not long ago, reading the newspaper in the morning with a cup of coffee or in the evening after dinner was common. However, the newspaper industry has been declining (下降) over the past ten years. It’s not only newspapers, though Magazine companies are finding it hard to keep their readers. Buying paper books is also declining as well. Why is this happening? Simply, it’s because of the Internet.
It used to be that newspapers, magazines and books were how people connected to the rest of the world and kept in touch with news and interests. However, with 40% of the world connected to the Internet, the need for the printed word is becoming much lower because it’s easy to find information online. People no longer need to wait for a news or magazine to arrive. They can now find all the information or read material they want on the Internet whenever they want. No longer do people have to turn through large pages in the newspaper or carry magazines around. Anything and everything one might need can now easily be found through a computer or a smart phone. Though books have faced a slower decline, the amount and use of e-books and e-readers have been on the rise. After all, it is much easier to carry an e-book in one’s back pocket or bag than it is to carry a heavy book around. E-books do not take up space in the home and they are also always there when needed.
With fewer readers of printed newspapers and magazines, more advertisers are also moving to the internet and media. As a result, a number of newspapers and magazines have been forced out of business. Some others have even to move online in order to try and keep going.
If this situation continues, the decline of the printed word may lead to a future generation (一代人) that know what it is like to hold a newspaper, magazine or book. To some, it will be a sign of the future. To others, it will be the sad end of a valued tradition.
32. This passage is mainly about ________.
A. what is happening to printed materials B. why e-books become so popular
C. when people began to read less D. why e-books become so popular
33. According to the passage, why did people lose interest in printed texts?
A. People don’t need to pay for books.
B. People can get information from somewhere else.
C. People don’t like all of the advertisements.
D. People get to know everything from advertisers.

c. The newspaper industry has been declining over the past ten years.
d. The decline of the printed word will be the sad end of a valued tradition.
A. a, b B. c, d C. a, c D. b, d

The 65-year-old Steve was found suffering from early Alzheimer’s (阿尔兹海默症). He was losing his memory.
A professional software engineer, Steve was also a lover of the piano, and the only musician in his family. Music was his true passion, though he had never performed outside the family.
Melissa, his daughter, felt it more than worthwhile (值得的) to save his music. She thought about hiring a professional pianist to work with her father.
Naomi Melissa’s best friend and a talented pianist, knew about this and showed willingness to help.
Naomi drove to the Goodwin home. She told Steve she’d love to hear him play. Steve moved to the piano and sat at the bench to play for the first time in his life for a stranger.
“It was beautiful.” Naomi said after listening. “The music was worth saving.”
Naomi and Steve met every other week and spent hours together. He’d move his fingers slowly on the piano, and then she’d take his place. He struggled to explain what he heard in his head. He stood by the piano, listening for the first time to his own work being played by someone else.
Working with Naomi did wonders for Steve. It had excited within him the belief he could write one last song. One day, Naomi received an email. Attached was a recording, a recording of loss and love, of the fight. Steve called it “Melancholy Flower”.
Naomi heard multiple stops and starts, Steve struggling, searching while his wife Joni called him “honey” and encouraged him. The task was so hard, and Steve, angry and upset, said he would give up. Joni praised him, telling her husband this could be his signature piece.
Naomi managed to figure out 16 of Steve’s favorite, and most personal songs. With Naomi’s help, the Goodwin family found a sound engineer to record Naomi playing Steve’s songs. Joni thought that would be the end. But it wasn’t.
In the months leading up to the 2016 Oregon Repertory Singers Christmas concert, Naomi asked for Steve’s permission to adding his music to the playing list. He considered it an honor.
After the concert, Naomi said that Steve’s music was beautiful and professional. It needed to be shared in public.
The family rented a former church in downtown Portland and scheduled a concert. By the day of the show, more than 300 people had said they would attend.
By then, Steve was having a hard time remembering the names of some of his friends. He knew the path his life was now taking. He told his family he was at peace.
Steve arrived and sat in the front row, surrounded by his family. The house lights faded. Naomi took the stage. Her fingers. His heart.

“How do you mean ‘worth it’?” replied the captain. “Your friend is dead!”
“Yes sir,” the soldier answered. “But it was worth it because when I got to him, he was still alive, and I had the satisfaction of hearing him say, ‘Peter, I knew you’d come.’ ”
Many a time in life, whether a thing is worth doing or not really depends on how you look at it. Take up all your courage and do something your heart tells you to do so that you may not regret not doing it later in life.

34. Which of the following statements are FACTS?
a. 40% of the world is connected to the internet.
b Some people think e-books are always available when needed.
c. The newspaper industry has been declining over the past ten years.
d. The decline of the printed word will be the sad end of a valued tradition.
A. a, b B. c, d C. a, c D. b, d
35. The overall tone (总基调) of this passage is probably _________.
A. interesting and funny. B. boring and difficult
C. personal and humorous D. serious and scientific

Naomi, Melissa’s best friend and a talented pianist, knew about this and showed willingness to help.
His heart.
