In the weeks and months following her husband’s cancer diagnosis, Diana would search for “hiding” places where she could let the uncontrollable waterfalls of tears flow from her eyes. “The storage room was a favorite. Then was the shower. But when I wasn’t home, it was the parking lots that served as my hiding places,” she said. After her husband passed away, parking lots were Diana’s safe haven (避风港) for pain and sorrow. One day, as she was about to place her order in the Dutch Brothers coffee drive-thru (汽车餐厅), the wave of sadness hit her like a tidal wave in the middle of her conversation with a friend. “I could hardly catch my breath and the ugly crying started,” said Diana. “The problem was, I was stuck in the coffee line at Dutch Brothers, one place where all the workers are young, happy and jamming out to music. And there was no way out. I was literally blocked in, so unless I wanted to back right up into the SUV behind me, I was about to be seen for the mess I really was.” The barista, who was making and serving coffee at the window, handed Diana an iced coffee with a sweet and simple note on the top. “When I looked down in the cup holder, I saw it. A pink straw, and the words ‘We love you’ written around it.” The girl didn’t know Diana’s pain or her story, but she knew she was hurting and couldn’t fix it. “She wanted me to know I wasn’t alone and that whatever trial I was going through, there were people out there who cared about me.” 24. What would Diana do when she wanted to cry? A. Go out for a ride. B. Cry her eyes out totally alone. C. Have a conversation with her friend. D. Play hide-and-seek in the storage room. 25. What do the underlined words “the mess” in paragraph 4 refer to? A. Causing a car crash. B. Getting stuck in a long line. C. Having an emotional explosion. D. Having a quarrel with a worker. 26. Which of the following best describe the barista? A. Generous and passionate. B. Intelligent and open-minded. C. Caring and determined. D. Observant and warm-hearted. 27. What can we learn from Diana’s story? A. Don’t judge a book by its cover. B. A friend in need is a friend indeed. C. God helps those who help themselves. D. Small acts of kindness make a difference. C According to official government figures, there are more than twice as many kangaroos as people in Australia, and many Australians consider them dangerous. It is reported that kangaroos are involved in more than 80 percent of the 20,000 vehicle-animal accidents each year. In the country’s under-populated region, the common belief is that kangaroo numbers have rocketed to “pandemic (大规模流行的) percentage”. It is believed that killing kangaroos is critical to boosting the economy. Meat, skins and leather from kangaroos have been sold to 56 countries. Global brands such as Nike, Puma and Adidas buy strong, soft “k-leather” to make athletic products. And kangaroo meat is finding its way into more and more grocery stores. Advocates point out that low-fat, high-protein kangaroo meat is more environmentally friendly than greenhouse gas-releasing sheep and cattle. John Kelly, former executive director of the Kangaroo Industry Association of Australia, says, “Harvesting our food from animals adapted to Australia’s environment is extremely wise and sustainable. Many ecologists will tell you that there is no more humane way of producing red meat.” Opponents of the industry call the killing inhumane, unsustainable and unnecessary. Dwayne Bannon-Harrison, a member of the Yuin people of New South Wales, says the idea that kangaroos are destroying the country is laughable. “They’ve been walking in this land a lot longer than people have,” he says. “How could something that’s been here for thousands of years be ‘destroying’ the country? I don’t understand the logic in that.” Can Australians’ disagreement on kangaroos be solved? George Wilson, a professor from Australian National University, says that if kangaroos were privately owned, then graziers (放牧人) would protect the animals, treating them as possessions (财产). They could feed them, lease them, breed them and charge hunters a fee for access. “If you want to protect something,” Wilson says, “you have to give it a value. Animals that are considered dangerous don’t have value.” If kangaroos were more valuable than cattle or sheep, landholders would work with the kangaroo industry on branding, marketing and quality control. The government’s role would be oversight and regulation. 28. What do we know from the article? A. Kangaroos are to blame for most accidents. B. Global brands make small profits on kangaroos. C. Kangaroos are relatively friendly to the environment. D. Over-populated kangaroos are doing great harm to the country’s economy. 29. Why does Dwayne Bannon disagree to kill kangaroos? A. Because it is laughable. B. Because it is destroying the country. C. Because they have existed on Earth longer than man. D. Because they live in harmony with people. 30. Which of the following might be the benefit of privatization (私有化)? A The popularity of kangaroo hunting. B. The reduction in the number of kangaroos. C. The establishment of more conservation areas. D. The better management of the kangaroo industry. 31. What is the purpose of this passage? A. To argue against the killing of kangaroos. B. To provide a solution to the problem caused by kangaroos. C. To present different opinions on the kangaroo industry. D. To stress the importance of protecting kangaroos. D In the ancient walled city of Sana’a, mud (泥) skyscrapers rise high into the sky. The towering structures are built entirely out of earth and decorated with amazing geometric patterns. The local mud architecture is so unique that the city has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. . Even though the buildings in Sana’a are thousands of years old, the ancient structures are still inhabited today and most remain private houses. It is easy to see why these mud buildings have not lost their appeal — they are well-insulated (隔热的), sustainable and extremely adaptable for modern use. “It is the architecture of the future,” says Damluji, co-founder of the Mud Brick Architecture Foundation. Architects around the world are reviving (复兴) raw-earth construction as they seek to construct sustainable buildings that can survive extreme weather events such as flash floods and intense heat. Could this ancient form of architecture influence the design of our future homes? The construction industry accounts for 38% of global carbon dioxide emissions. The building sector has an important role to play if the world is to meet the goal of reaching net zero by 2050. Concrete, a common modern construction material, has a huge carbon footprint. Replacing concrete with less polluting materials is important to achieving our climate goals, scientists warn. The ancient material, mud, could be the perfect sustainable replacement for concrete, according to Damluji. Constructing with mud has a very low impact on the environment and the material itself is fully recyclable. She says, “If you want to pull down a wall or change the design, you can recycle all the materials.” An added benefit is that mud buildings are warm in the winter and cool in the summer. This reduces the need for air conditioning units, which consume large amounts of electricity and contain refrigerants (制冷剂) that make up greenhouse gas emissions. Mud structures are also incredibly strong and resistant to extreme weather, such as heatwaves, floods and droughts, which scientists say will become more frequent and intense as temperatures continue to rise. Therefore, people who wish to live in a modern, comfortable home should consider one made of mud. Overall, it makes for highly advanced as well as sustainable design. 32. Which of the following is TRUE about mud materials according to the passage? A. They can reduce the chance of extreme weather events. B. They can be ideal for sustainable construction of the future. C. They might produce a lot of greenhouse gas emissions. D. They might cause substantial temperature changes. 33. What can be inferred from the passage? A. Mud might be an important solution to the climate crisis. B. Rebuilding mud construction would take great efforts. C. Mud has become architects’ favourite building material. D. The mud buildings in Sana’a are no longer suitable to live in. 34. What’s the author’s attitude towards raw-earth construction in the building industry? A. Cautious. B. Indifferent. C. Critical. D. Supportive. 35. What might be the best title of the passage? A. Historic Cities Mark Human Civilization B. Construction Industry Threatens Climate Goals C. Modern Architecture Survives Extreme Weather D. Ancient Material Makes for Future House Designs When preparing fruit and vegetables, many people prefer to peel them. Here comes a question. ____36____ Fruit and vegetables are rich sources of vitamins, minerals, fiber and some good plant chemicals. Not consuming enough of these foods is linked to an increased risk of some chronic diseases. But eating 400g of fruit and vegetables a day, as the WHO recommends, is difficult to achieve for many people. ____37____ They can certainly contribute. For example, nutritionally important amounts of vitamins, such as vitamin C and riboflavin (核黄素), and minerals such as iron and zine, are found in the peels of seven root vegetables: beetroot, field mustard, wild carrot, sweet potatoes, radish, ginger and white potatoes. And the US Department of Agriculture shows that unpeeled apples contain 15% more vitamin C, 267% more vitamin K, 20% more calcium, 19% more potassium and 85% more fiber than their peeled equivalents. ____38____ According to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization, uneaten food, including peels, generates 8% - 10% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. Food rotting in landfills releases a lot of methane. New Zealand alone reports an annual wastage of 13,658 tonnes of vegetable peels and 986 tonnes of fruit peels — a country with a population of only 5.1 million people. So why do people peel fruit and vegetables? Some must be peeled as the outer portions are inedible, don’t taste nice, are hard to clean or cause harm, such as bananas, oranges, melons, pineapples, mangoes, avocados, onion and garlic. Also peeling may be a necessary part of the recipe, for example, when making mashed potato. ____39____ Also, some people peel fruit and vegetables because they are concerned about pesticides (杀虫剂) on the surface. Pesticide remains are certainly left on or just below the surface, although this varies according to plant species. ____40____ Indeed, the US Food and Drug Administration recommends that people wash produce thoroughly under cold water and scrub it with a hard brush to remove pesticides, dirt and chemicals. A. Is peeling a necessary step before eating? B. There are important nutrients in the peels. C. However, most of them can be removed by washing. D. Are peels the most common food waste in the kitchen? E. But many peels are edible and yet people still peel them anyway. F. So could consuming fruit and vegetable peels help with this issue? G. Another reason not to discard peels is their effect on the environment. The Unlikely Friendship In the heart of the city stood an old library, a place where time seemed to slow down. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life. One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement fed the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don’t have any special skills to share.” Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn’t shake the upsetting feeling until one day, Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. “How about singing together in the talent show?” She grinned, “I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I can’t help following you here.” Gosh, I couldn’t believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world’s prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune. “You two? The talent show for the food bank?” My mum bent towards us and her face lit up. “A big occasion.” Then a light bulb seemed to go in her head. “Why not practise right now upstairs? I bet you’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike. Emma and I embarked on rehearsing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform. Paragraph 1: I was completely knocked out by the news. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Finally came the big moment. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 绵阳中学高2024级高一上期期末模拟测试 英语试题 满分150分 考试时间:120分钟 第一部分 听力 (共两节,满分30分) 第一节 (共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 What did the man clean just now? The new year for me, especially when I was quite young, was more of a festival. I remember waiting almost the entire year for the new year’s holidays. I remember saving money and keeping that for buying new year cards and that was the most unforgettable memory of my childhood. Instead of getting pocket money, I remember those beautiful little cards and the small envelopes in which I used to put those cards. In fact, the biggest and the best card was for our teacher, the second best for the best friend and the rest was for others, including my brothers and sisters. I remember spending a whole week in happiness and bringing home a lot of new year cards nowadays. I see those cards. I am reminded of my childhood and I still buy one for myself. I hope many of you do, and on this occasion we will hand out new year cards, chocolates and flowers to everyone. Volunteers will go to you and pass you these little presents. After that, we will move on to our musical journey. A NYU GRADUATE ADMISSIONS A graduate education brings the work you did as an undergrad to the next level and provides you with the opportunity to focus on the topics and ideas that you care about most. 25. A pink straw, and the words ‘We love you’ written around it. 一根粉红色的吸管,旁边写着“我们爱你”)”和最后一段“The girl didn’t know Diana’s pain or her story, but she knew she was hurting and couldn’t fix it. “She wanted me to know I wasn’t alone. And that whatever trial I was going through, there were people out there who cared about me.” 这个故事体现了“Small acts of kindness make a difference. 29 Why does Dwayne Bannon disagree to kill kangaroos? A. Because it is laughable. B. Because it is destroying the country. C. Because they have existed on Earth longer than man. D. Because they live in harmony with people. 30. Which of the following might be the benefit of privatization (私有化)? A. The popularity of kangaroo hunting. C 29. C 30. D 31. 根据第三段“Advocates point out that low-fat, high-protein kangaroo meat is more environmentally friendly than greenhouse gas-releasing sheep and cattle. 根据第四段“Dwayne Bannon-Harrison, a member of the Yuin people of New South Wales, says the idea that kangaroos are destroying the country is laughable. “They’ve been walking in this land a lot longer than people have,” he says. “How could something that’s been here for thousands of years be ‘destroying’ the country? I don’t understand the logic in that.” 根据最后一段“If kangaroos were more valuable than cattle or sheep, landholders would work with the kangaroo industry on branding, marketing and quality control. The government’s role would be oversight and regulation. 根据第一段“According to official government figures, there are more than twice as many kangaroos as people in Australia, and many Australians consider them dangerous. 第二段“It is believed that killing kangaroos is critical to boosting the economy.(人们认为,杀死袋鼠对促进经济发展至关重要)”以及最后一段“George Wilson, a professor from Australian National University, says that if kangaroos were privately owned, then graziers (放牧人) would protect the animals, treating them as possessions (财产). They could feed them, lease them, breed them and charge hunters a fee for access.(澳大利亚国立大学教授乔治·威尔逊说,如果袋鼠是私人所有的,那么牧场主就会保护这些动物,把它们当作财产)”可知,文章开头提出问题,袋鼠使得人们面临危机,后文提出不同的解决方法,所以文章的写作目的是为袋鼠造成的问题提供解决方案。故选B。 D In the ancient walled city of Sana’a, mud (泥) skyscrapers rise high into the sky. Ancient Material Makes for Future House Designs 【答案】32. B 33. A 34. D 35. E. But many peels are edible, and yet people still peel them anyway. F. So could consuming fruit and vegetable peels help with this issue? G. Another reason not to discard peels is their effect on the environment. 36. A 37. B 38. G 39. E 40. Pesticide remains are certainly left on or just below the surface, although this varies according to plant species.(此外,有些人会削水果和蔬菜的皮,因为他们担心表面的杀虫剂。杀虫剂残留物肯定会留在表皮或表皮以下,尽管这因植物种类而异)”说明有些人削皮是因为担心水果蔬菜表皮残留的杀虫剂,以及下文“Indeed, the US Food and Drug Administration recommends that people wash produce thoroughly under cold water and scrub it with a hard brush to remove pesticides, dirt and chemicals.(事实上,美国食品和药物管理局建议人们在冷水下彻底清洗农产品,并用硬刷擦洗,以去除杀虫剂、污垢和化学物质)”说明果蔬表皮的杀虫剂可以通过不同方法去除,C项“然而,它们中的大多数可以通过清洗去除。” The Unlikely Friendship In the heart of the city stood an old library, a place where time seemed to slow down. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】I was completely knocked out by the news. What should I do? Having prepared for such a long time, I didn’t think of that coming up. Feeling at a loss, I was brainstorming as hard as I could to think of a solution, when a gentle touch on my back brought me back to reality. It was my mum, who looked at me with care and concern. “You have prepared for it enough. You can do it by yourself.” She said after my stumbled explanation. I looked back at her eyes, and a sense of confidence and warmness swelled up in my heart. Yes, I could do it myself. Finally came the big moment. Looking around the audience, I stepped onto the stage, with butterflies in my stomach. My voice trembled at first, but with the melodies flew around, the nervousness was gone with the wind. Emotions filled in my song, I performed as naturally as I spoke every day. I saw my mum, who was looking at me with reassurance and care. It turned out to be a good performance, which helped me conquer my fears and turned me into a new person. 词汇激活 行为类 ① 表演:perform/make a performance/show one’s talents ② 做准备:prepare for/make preparations for ③ 参加:participate in/join in/take part in/be involved in ④ 笑:grin/smile/laugh/giggle/chuckle 情绪类 ① 害羞内向的:shy/reserved/introverted ② 好奇的:curious/be full of curiosity ③ 开心的:delighted/overjoyed/content ④ 担忧的:concerned/worried/butterflies in one’s stomach 【点睛】[高分句型1] Having prepared for such a long time, I didn’t think of that coming up.(运用了现在分词作时间状语) [高分句型2] Emotions filled in my song, I performed as naturally as I spoke every day.(运用了独立主格结构) [高分句型3] I saw my mum, who was looking at me with reassurance and care.(运用了who引导的定语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$null
