Claudene Wilson, a longtime guardian at a K-8 school in Swedeborg, Missouri, knew she was appreciated by staff and students, but she was amazed when she showed up to school one day and saw the building was named after her.
“It was a shock,” said Wilson, 64, who started as a guardian at the Swedeborg District III Elementary School in 1994. Wilson said supporting students has been the most important part of her job through the years. Every morning as they exit the school bus, Wilson greets each student with a smile. “I know them all by name. I know their moms and dads by name,” she said, adding that students often go to her when they have a problem or need advice. She is happy to lend an ear.
After 30 years, Wilson retired from the small school — which has about 40 students — in July. Staff, students and community members agreed they wanted to honor Wilson’s hard work and dedication. In late August, the school board voted unanimously to name the building after Wilson. They decided to call it the “Claudene Wilson Learning Center” to ensure her legacy and impact would live on for generations.
“She has made it such a priority in her life for the past 30 years, and we’ve been blessed to have her.” said Mark Sasfy, the assistant administrator of the school. Sasfy said the goal in renaming the building after Wilson was not only to honor her decades of work, but also to encourage students to be kind, hardworking and supportive — like Wilson. Kids can learn something just from that. There’s so much more to education than just reading, writing and mathematics.
4. What was Wilson’s focus during her years as a guardian?
A. Providing support. B. Maintaining order.
C. Ensuring students’ safety. D. Monitoring students’ well-being.
5. What is the purpose of naming the school building after Wilson?
A. To attract more students to the school.
B. To promote a new educational program.
C. To encourage students to follow Wilson’s example.
D. To recognize her contribution to local organizations.
6. What else should students learn according to the last paragraph?
A. Effective study habits and strategies. B. Science and technology knowledge.
C. Motivation, discipline and self-control. D. Goodwill, diligence and helpfulness.
7. Which of the following word best describes Wilson?
A. Devoted. B. Honest. C. Brave. D. Positive.

From Los Angeles to London, weight-loss drugs such as Ozempic are reshaping culture as much as waistlines (腰围). Some Ozempic-takers have little appetites and dine at unusual hours. Others have lost their taste for alcohol. Many have given up on the gym, either because they are tired or because the drugs keep them slim. MyOzempicJourney posts have racked up millions of views on TikTok, as people share how they are adjusting to their new lifestyles.
These drugs have also slimmed people's demand for diet books. Since June 2021, when Wegovy, the first blockbuster slimming jab (注射), was approved by America's Food and Drug Administration, sales of “health and fitness” print books in America have fallen by 15%, according to Circana, a research firm. (Sales of print books overall fell by 4%.) The category shifted fewer than 10m hard copies in the years ending June 2023 and June 2024, the lowest in a decade. Diet, exercise and weight-loss titles are among the worst sellers.
Publishers are trying to fight back by expanding beyond books that promise fast results from calorie-counting and new dieting fads (时尚); they are focusing more on living longer and keeping energetic. Sales of books about longevity rose by 50% in the past year, according to Circana. Newly published diet books tell readers to forget fads and make simple lifestyle changes. By promising low effort and high reward, they offer an easy, cheap alternative to drugs.
In time the drugs may even attract new readers. Books are being written for those with tiny appetites: “The Mayo Clinic Diet”, first published in 1949, has released a “weight-loss medications edition”. Some publishers predict greater demand for titles about diabetes and blood sugar, as people try to learn more about the science behind the drugs.
But as even cheaper and more convenient weight-loss drugs emerge and spread, publishers will probably need to change strategies. Nobody in publishing is entirely sure what the next chapter will bring.
8. What does the underlined word “slimmed” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Met. B. Boosted. C. Lowered. D. Affected.
9. How do publishers respond to weight-loss drugs?
A. They encourage readers to avoid fads. B. They expand the contents of diet books.
C. They promise readers fast weight-losing. D. They speak ill of weight-loss drugmakers.
10. Which statement will the author probably agree with?
A. People have adapted to their new lifestyles.
B. Publishers need to cooperate with drugmakers.
C. Diet books make no difference to losing weight.
D. The drugs may promote the publishing industry.
11. What is the writer's attitude toward the future of publishing?
A. Confident. B. Uncertain. C. Indifferent. D. Cautious.
D
In the tropical rainforest, there always exist battles, ones to claim the tree’s dead body and the vast amount of nutrients that it contains. It’s a battle that is fought throughout the natural world, involving a group of organisms that humans rarely notice.
On the floor of a tropical rainforest, it’s dark, humid and hot, providing ideal conditions for fungi (真菌) . Humans normally think of fungi as things like this — mushrooms of one kind or another. But these are just the fruiting bodies. They exist for most of the time hidden in the leaf litter and the earth as a network of fine white threads.
The threads of competing fungi envelop their victim’s body, releasing enzymes (酶) which digest the tree’s tissues and unlock the nutrients within. There are a million or so different species of fungi in the tropics. Some feed on dead plants. Others eat them alive. And some reveal their existence in an eerily beautiful way. In Africa, in Congo, this is known as chimpanzee fire. The mysterious glow becomes brighter as the fungi digests the tree. When fungi have fed sufficiently, they develop their reproductive organs.
Each can produce literally billions of spores (孢子) , the tiny particles that carry the species’ genetic blueprint. Each spore like this has the potential to kill a tree. The spores are so light that they can be carried by the slightest air currents. At least a billion float above every square meter of rainforest.
Recently, it has been discovered that these spores do far more than just bring death and decay. They are, in fact, at the very center of the rainforest’s life support system. High in the humid air, the spores combine with molecules of water. Gradually, they collect into droplets, which fall as rain when they are heavy enough. Over two-and-a-half meters of rain falls every year in a rainforest. And in the center of almost every raindrop, there is a fungal spore.
12. What can we learn from paragraph 1?
A. The trees’ dead bodies are now popular. B. Battles for nutrients occur in the rainforest.
C. Wild nature is being conquered by humans. D. People are fully aware of the natural world.
13 What is the role of fungi in a tropical rainforest ecosystem?
A. It forms a network of fine white threads to support each other.
B. It glows to exist in the rainforest and produce billions of spores.
C. It fights against each other to occupy ideal conditions for its living.
D. It decomposes plants and releases nutrients back into the ecosystem.
14. How do fungal spores contribute to the rainforest’s life support system?
A. They combine with water molecules to form raindrops.
B. They facilitate the water cycle by reproducing more spores.
C. They float in the air to cool down the climate in the rainforest.
D. They contribute to dealing with the dead trees and bring new life.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Mysterious Facts in the Rainforest B. The Formation of Fungi in the Rainforest
C. The Challenge Fungi Face in the Rainforest D. The Hidden Power of Rainforest Decomposers

There was a little girl named Radha, whose parents were extremely wealthy. They had blessed her with all the toys and clothes of all colors and everything for her enjoyment. She was the apple of her parents’ eyes. They made sure that she had all the comforts in life. A nanny stayed with Radha the whole day to take care of her.
Given their wealth and busy schedule, the parents didn’t have much time to spend with their little princess. Not realizing what she was missing in her life, she became an arrogant (傲慢的) and overprotective girl. She never spoke gently with people of poor living conditions and always made fun of their poverty.
As Radha’s birthday was approaching, she was excited and looked forward to celebrating this special day with her family and friends. On the day of the birthday, all the preparations for the celebration in the house were carefully arranged by the nanny. Radha’s excitement was overflowing, and she could hardly stop for a moment. Her room was fully decorated, the balloons and ribbons added to the festive atmosphere, and the sweetness of the cake in the kitchen made her eager to start celebrating.
At the party in the evening, all of her friends began to gather to watch the cake being cut. But to her disappointment, neither of her parents returned from the office and were with her on her special day. She felt sad to the core and went to the room crying uncontrollably. Coincidentally a friend of hers whose fun she made all the time, came to her room to wish her birthday. Seeing Radha burst into tears, she quickly and gently asked the reason. She wondered why her friend would be so sad on this day of celebration. So, Radha told all her heart to her friend. As it happened, the next day was her friend’s birthday.
A. Devoted. B. Honest. C. Brave. D. Positive.
【答案】4. A 5. C 6. D 7. A

11 What is the writer's attitude toward the future of publishing?
A. Confident. B. Uncertain. C. Indifferent. D. Cautious.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. D 11. B

【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“Some publishers predict greater demand for titles about diabetes and blood sugar, as people try to learn more about the science behind the drugs.(一些出版商预测,随着人们试图更多地了解这些药物背后的科学,有关糖尿病和血糖的书籍的需求将会增加)”可推知,作者可能会同意的说法是药物可能促进出版行业。故选D。

13. What is the role of fungi in a tropical rainforest ecosystem?
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. A 15. D

At the party in the evening all of her friends began to gather to watch the cake being cut. To celebrate their birthdays together, her friend invited Radha to her home.

Radha accepted her friend’s invitation. She felt a mix of excitement and nervousness as she prepared to visit her friend’s home. When she arrived, she was greeted with warmth and kindness. The simple decorations and the delicious homemade cake made her realize that happiness doesn’t always come from wealth. As they celebrated together, Radha saw how her friend shared her joy with her family and how they appreciated each moment spent together. This experience opened Radha’s eyes to the beauty of genuine friendship and the importance of love and connection over material possessions.
From that day on, Radha made up her mind to change herself. She began to treat everyone with kindness and respect, regardless of their background. Radha started volunteering at local community centers, helping those in need and learning about their lives. She discovered the joy of giving and the fulfillment that comes from making a positive impact on others. With each passing day, Radha transformed into a more compassionate and humble person, understanding that true wealth lies in the relationships we build and the love we share.
