When Goldstein was a young child, he took piano lessons every Saturday morning with a family friend. She would feed him breakfast, and Goldstein would get to check out her husband’s stamp collection. Eventually, they would get around to playing the piano.
But when Goldstein was 12, his teacher told his parents that he needed better instruction. So his mother took him to a music school in the Bronx, and enrolled (注册) him in classes with a teacher named Alice Shapiro. This new teacher was known for being strict, and she quickly lived up to that name.
One time, Shapiro asked Goldstein to memorize one of Beethoven’s master pieces for the next week. Goldstein replied immediately, saying he didn’t know if he could do that. Hearing Goldstein’s reply, Shapiro said seriously, “Well, if you say you won’t do it ... then you won’t be able to do it. You need to do it. I want to hear it memorized next week.”
This was nothing like his lighthearted Saturday mornings with his former teacher, and it wasn’t long before Goldstein decided that he didn’t want to take piano lessons anymore. He figured he would pick up another instrument (乐器), or maybe just teach himself the piano.
At one of his last lessons of the semester, Shapiro turned to him and said something surprising: “You’re not ready to stop.” The hesitant student immediately felt a sign from the teacher that she cared about him. That moment changed their relationship. Within a few weeks, they were having fun and laughing during lessons. And within a few months, she was teaching him things about music he had never known before. It was the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship.
“She became my mentor (导师) and closest friend. I went into music, went to Juilliard, became a musician, and became a piano teacher,” Goldstein said. “And that’s what I’ve been doing for the past 50 years. And I owe it all to that one precious moment with my unsung hero, Alice Shapiro.”
4. Where did Goldstein have piano lessons before 12 years old?
A. In the kindergarten. B. In a friend’s home.
C. In a music school. D. In Alice Shapiro’s class.
5. How did Goldstein react to the memorizing task?
A. He jumped at the challenge. B. He felt quite confused about it.
C. He argued with the teacher. D. He expressed his doubt about it.
6. Why did Goldstein once intend to give up piano lessons?
A. He missed his former teacher. B. He found piano lessons difficult.
C. He couldn’t bear Shapiro’s strictness. D. He wanted to learn another instrument.
7. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A. A teacher’s concern for students matters. B. It is a teacher’s duty to help students.
C. A great teacher produces excellent students. D. Learning with fun makes things easy.
B 5. D 6. C 7. A

根据第一段“When Goldstein was a young child, he took piano lessons every Saturday morning with a family friend. She would feed him breakfast, and Goldstein would get to check out her husband’s stamp collection. Eventually, they would get around to playing the piano.(当戈尔茨坦还是个孩子的时候,他每个星期六早上都和一位家庭朋友一起上钢琴课。她会给他吃早餐,戈尔茨坦会去看看她丈夫的邮票收藏。最终,他们会抽出时间弹钢琴。)”可知,在12岁之前,Goldstein在一个朋友家上钢琴课。故选B项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“One time, Shapiro asked Goldstein to memorize one of Beethoven’s master pieces for the next week. Goldstein replied immediately, saying he didn’t know if he could do that. (有一次,夏皮罗要求戈尔茨坦在下周背诵贝多芬的一首杰作。戈尔茨坦立即回复说,他不知道自己能否做到这一点)”可知,Goldstein听完后立即表示,他对于自己能否完成这个任务并没有把握,即表示怀疑。故选D项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“This was nothing like his lighthearted Saturday mornings with his former teacher, and it wasn’t long before Goldstein decided that he didn’t want to take piano lessons anymore. He figured he would pick up another instrument (乐器), or maybe just teach himself the piano. (这与他和以前老师一起度过的轻松愉快的周六早晨完全不同。没过多久,戈尔茨坦就决定不再上钢琴课了。他想他会选择另一种乐器,或者自学钢琴)”可知,他曾想放弃钢琴学习是因为不能忍受新老师的严厉。故选C项。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“The hesitant student immediately felt a sign from the teacher that she cared about him. That moment changed their relationship.(那个犹豫的学生立刻感觉到老师关心他的信号。那一刻改变了他们的关系)”以及最后一段““She became my mentor (导师) and closest friend. I went into music, went to Juilliard, became a musician, and became a piano teacher,” Goldstein said. “And that’s what I’ve been doing for the past 50 years. And I owe it all to that one precious moment with my unsung hero, Alice Shapiro.”(“她成了我的导师和最亲密的朋友。我进入了音乐界,去了茱莉亚音乐学院,成为了一名音乐家,又成为了一名钢琴老师。”“这就是我过去50年来一直在做的事情。这一切都要归功于我和无名英雄爱丽丝·夏皮罗在一起的那一刻。”)”可知,正处于犹豫中的Goldstein 顿时感受到了老师的关心,那一刻他们的关系发生了转变,所以老师对学生的关心是很重要的。故选A项。
C
There is more that comes with older age than graying hair and wrinkled skin. When humans reach their later years, they favour more established friends and their social circle is reduced.
Now, for what appears to be the first time, scientists have seen the same behaviour in another species. Twenty years of observations of chimpanzees (黑猩猩) show that older males choose to hang out with their long-term friends at the expense of other relationships.
The researchers analyzed 78,000 hours of observations made between 1996 and 2016 that followed the social interactions of 21 male chimpanzees between the ages of 15 and 58 years old. They classified the chimps’ relationships depending on the amount of time they sat with others and groomed (梳毛) them. They then rated the various pairings as mutual (相互的) friendships, where both chimps seemed to enjoy the relationship; one-sided friendships, where one chimp was more keen to be friends than the other; and non-friendships, where neither chimp showed interest in the other.
When the scientists looked at the patterns of friendships, they found that the older chimps had more mutual friendships and fewer one-sided friendships than younger chimps. Another feature seen in older humans was also found in the chimps. As the males got older, their levels of aggression (攻击性) tailed off, meaning they started fewer fights and tended to intimidate others in their group less often.
The observations have left the researchers puzzled. According to an idea in psychology known as Socioemotional Selectivity Theory, older humans prefer more positive relationships because they are aware time is running out. But many animal experts argue that chimpanzees lack the human sense of death, suggesting something else is driving the behaviour.
Robin Dunbar, a professor of evolutionary psychology at the University of Oxford, said in humans, the decline in social circles with age is due to declining social motivation to get out and meet people combined with lack of opportunity. “In chimpanzees, as older males compete less for mates, they may focus on close, mutual relationships with trusted partners,” she said.
8. What do older male chimpanzees favour?
A. Old friendships. B. New partners. C. Coloured hair. D. Aged skin.
9. How did the researchers draw their conclusion about chimpanzees?
A. By turning to other scientists for help. B. By monitoring chimps for 20 years.
C. By building relationships with chimps. D. By studying long-time observations.
10. What does the underlined word “intimidate” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Protect. B. Motivate. C. Frighten. D. Accompany.
11. According to Robin Dunbar, what explains declining social circles in chimpanzees?
A. Awareness of time limit. B. Less competition for mates.
C. Low motivation for socialization. D. Lack of the human sense of death.
A 9. D 10. C 11. B
根据文章第二段“Twenty years of observations of chimpanzees (黑猩猩) show that older males choose to hang out with their long-term friends at the expense of other relationships.(20年来对黑猩猩的观察表明,年长的雄性黑猩猩选择与长期的朋友在一起,而牺牲了其他的关系)”可知,年长的雄性黑猩猩更重视旧的友谊。故选A项。
根据文章第三段“The researchers analyzed 78,000 hours of observations made between 1996 and 2016 that followed the social interactions of 21 male chimpanzees between the ages of 15 and 58 years old.(研究人员研究了1996年至2016年间对21只年龄在15岁至58岁之间的雄性黑猩猩进行的7.8万小时的社会交往观察)”可推知,研究人员是通过分析二十年来的观察得出关于黑猩猩的结论的。
通过文章最后一段““In chimpanzees, as older males compete less for mates, they may focus on close, mutual relationships with trusted partners,” she said.(她说:“在黑猩猩中,随着年龄较大的雄性黑猩猩对配偶的竞争减少,它们可能会专注于与值得信赖的伙伴建立亲密、相互的关系。”)”
D
We’ve all been there: in a lift, in line at the bank or on an airplane, surrounded by people who are, like us, deeply focused on their smartphones or, worse, struggling with the uncomfortable silence.
What’s the problem? It’s possible that we all have compromised conversational intelligence. It’s more likely that none of us start a conversation because it’s awkward and challenging, or we think it’s annoying and unnecessary. But the next time you find yourself among strangers, consider that small talk is worth the trouble. Experts say it’s an invaluable social practice that results in big benefits.
Dismissing small talk as unimportant is easy, but we can’t forget that deep relationships wouldn’t even exist if it weren’t for casual conversation. “Small talk is the grease (润滑剂) for social communication,” says Bernardo Carducci, director of the Shyness Research Institute at Indiana University Southeast. “Almost every great love story and each big business deal begins with small talk,” he explains. “The key to successful small talk is learning how to connect with others, not just communicate with them.”
In a 2014 study, Elizabeth Dunn, associate professor of psychology at UBC, invited people on their way into a coffee shop. One group was asked to seek out an interaction (互动) with its waiter; the other, to speak only when necessary. The results showed that those who chatted with their server reported significantly higher positive feelings and a better coffee shop experience. “It’s not that talking to the waiter is better than talking to your husband,” says Dunn. “But interactions with peripheral (边缘的) members of our social network matter for our well-being also.”
Dunn believes that people who reach out to strangers feel a significantly greater sense of belonging, a bond with others. Carducci believes developing such a sense of belonging starts with small talk. “Small talk is the basis of good manners,” he says.
12. What does the scene described in the first paragraph show?
A. People’s addiction to smartphones. B. Discomfort from crowds.
C. Absence of interaction between strangers. D. Impatience with slow service.
13. What is important for successful small talk according to Carducci?
A. Showing good manners. B. Relating to other people.
C. Making business deals. D. Focusing on a shared topic.
14. What does the coffee-shop study suggest about small talk?
A. It improves family relationships. B. It raises people’s confidence.
C. It matters as much as a formal talk. D. It makes people feel good.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Skills of communication B. Ways of Breaking Silence
C. Benefits of Small Talk D. Avoidance of Embarrassment
C 13. B 14. D 15. C
根据第一段“We’ve all been there: in a lift, in line at the bank or on an airplane, surrounded by people who are, like us, deeply focused on their smartphones or, worse, struggling with the uncomfortable silence.(我们都有过这样的经历:在电梯里、在银行排队或在飞机上,周围的人和我们一样,全神贯注地盯着自己的智能手机,或者更糟的是,在令人不安的沉默中挣扎)”由此可知,本段主要描述的是在公共场所,陌生人之间缺乏沟通。
根据第三段最后一句““Small talk is the grease (润滑剂) for social communication,” says Bernardo Carducci, director of the Shyness Research Institute at Indiana University Southeast. “Almost every great love story and each big business deal begins with small talk,” he explains. “The key to successful small talk is learning how to connect with others, not just communicate with them.”(“闲聊是社交的润滑剂,”印第安纳大学东南分校害羞研究所主任Bernardo Carducci说。“几乎每一个伟大的爱情故事和每一笔大生意都是从闲聊开始的,”他解释说。“成功闲聊的关键是学会如何与他人建立联系,而不仅仅是与他们交流。”)”由此可知,根据Carducci的说法,成功的闲聊最重要的是与他人建立联系。故选B项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段的调查结果“The results showed that those who chatted with their server reported significantly higher positive feelings and a better coffee shop experience.(结果显示,那些与服务员聊天的人表现出明显更高的积极情绪和更好的咖啡馆体验)”可知,那些与服务员聊天的人,有显著的积极情绪和更好的咖啡店体验,因为闲聊让人感觉很好。

根据前文“It’s well known that kids benefit from eating dinner with their families. In fact, children who spend this quality time with their parents do better in school and have larger vocabularies.(众所周知,孩子们从与家人共进晚餐中受益。事实上,与父母共度这段美好时光的孩子在学校表现更好,词汇量也更大)”可知,此处在讲述和家人共进晚餐的好处;G项“They also have lower rates of anxiety and manage emotions more sensibly.(他们也有更低的焦虑率和更明智地管理情绪)”承接上文,进一步阐述与父母共度用餐时光给孩子心理健康和情绪上带来的益处,其中also说明与上文构成并列递进关系。故选G项。
【17题详解】
根据前文“When families eat together, they usually have healthier home-cooked meals and consume more fruits and vegetables.(当家人一起吃饭时,他们通常会吃更健康的家常菜,吃更多的水果和蔬菜)”可知,本段主要讲述,孩子们和家人共进晚餐,会吃的更健康,所以D项“Parents want to be a model of good eating habits.(父母想成为良好饮食习惯的榜样)”解释为什么会吃的健康的原因,符合本段主题;且D选项与下文“So they tend to give up destructive behavior and eat more mindfully when their children are watching.(因此,当孩子们看着他们时,他们往往会放弃破坏性的行为,吃得更用心。)”
设空位于段首,为本段中心句;根据后文“It has been found that family meals may lead to social benefits for parents including those who have lower levels of the symptoms (症状) of depression and stress. Parents who eat with their children also say that they are more likely to be in a good mood.(研究发现,家庭聚餐可能会给父母带来社会效益,包括那些抑郁和压力症状较低的父母。和孩子一起吃饭的父母也表示,他们更有可能心情愉快)”可知,一起吃饭可以有利于父母的心理健康,所以B项“Eating together profits parents’ mental health.(一起吃饭有利于父母的心理健康)”符合本段主题。故选B项。
【19题详解】
设空位于段尾,是对前文的总结;根据前文“When parents and kids eat together, they are developing links. In other words, they can build stronger connections. They will turn off the TV, put away their cell phones and just have face-to-face conversations. Keep the conversations positive and encourage kids to discuss their day.(当父母和孩子一起吃饭时,他们正在建立联系。换句话说,他们可以建立更强的联系。他们会关掉电视,放下手机,只进行面对面的交谈。保持积极的对话,鼓励孩子们讨论他们的一天)”可知,本段主要讲述父母和孩子一起吃饭,他们可以加强沟通,建立联系,所以F项“The more the family communicate, the better their relationship.(家庭沟通越多,他们的关系就越好)”是对前文的总结。故选F项。
【20题详解】
根据前文“Eating together helps pass on family tradition.(一起吃饭有助于传承家庭传统)”阐述关于家庭聚餐对家族传统延续的益处;E项“Eating as a family hands down good parenting skills.(作为一个家庭,饮食传承了良好的育儿技巧)”可知,是对前文的进一步解释,符合文意。

47. Pumpkin (南瓜) carving at Halloween is a family tradition. We visit a local farm every October. In the pumpkin field, I compete with my three brothers and sister to seek out the biggest pumpkin. My dad has a rule that we have to carry our pumpkins back home, and as the eldest child I have an advantage — I carried an 85-pounder (85磅重的南瓜) back last year.
This year, it was hard to tell whether my prize or the one chosen by my 14-year-old brother, Jason, was the winner. Unfortunately we forgot to weigh them before taking out their insides, but I was determined to prove my point. All of us were hard at work at the kitchen table, with my mom filming the annual event. I’m unsure now why I thought forcing my head inside the pumpkin would settle the matter, but it seemed to make perfect sense at the time.
With the pumpkin resting on the table, hole uppermost (向上), I bent over and pressed my head against the opening. At first I got jammed (塞住) just above my eyes and then, as I went on with my task, unwilling to quit, my nose briefly prevented entry. Finally I managed to put my whole head into it, like a cork (软木塞) forced into a bottle. I was able to straighten up with the huge pumpkin resting on my shoulders.
My excitement was short-lived. The pumpkin was heavy. “I’m going to set it down, now,” I said, and with Jason helping to support its weight, I bent back over the table to give it somewhere to rest. It was only when I tried to remove my head that I realized getting out was going to be less straightforward than getting in. When I pulled hard, my nose got in the way. I got into a panic as I pressed firmly against the table and moved my head around trying to find the right angle, but it was no use. “I can’t get it out!” I shouted, my voice sounding unnaturally loud in the enclosed (封闭的) space.

It was five or six minutes though it felt much longer.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The video was posted online the Monday before Halloween.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
It was five or six minutes though it felt much longer. Dad was summoned-less, it seemed, in expectation of practical help than to make sure he didn’t miss out on the spectacle. I heard him propose calling the fire department. “Stay tuned,” said Mom; she’d mentioned she was going to upload the video to Facebook, but it was only then that I realized she’d been filming the whole time. The video cuts before my rescue — Dad got me to push my head farther into the pumpkin so Mom could reach in and undo the rubber band round my ponytail. I emerged with squash-conditioned hair, a sore chin and my nose plugged with pulp.
The video was posted the Monday before Halloween. By the end of that day, it had over 1, 000 views. People asked Mom to put it on Youtube, and by Wednesday morning we were getting 5: 00 am call from TV breakfast shows and then the international media-the video started racking up hundreds of thousands of views. When I went on a youth camp, I was recognized by children I’d never met. The pumpkin also became a minor celebrity. Passersby and trick-or-treaters would knock and ask, “Which is Rachel’s pumpkin?” before taking selfies with it.

D. Aged skin.
9 How did the researchers draw their conclusion about chimpanzees?

This year it was hard to tell whether my prize or the one chosen by my 14-year-old brother, Jason, was the winner.
