We’ve dug deep to find 4 of the most exciting documentary films coming to a screen near you in 2022
Last Exit: Space
Last Exit: Space, narrated by Werner Herzog, explores the human potential for settling in space and sending people where they’ve never been before. Since planet Earth is possibly going to hell (地狱) in a handbasket, the film promises to ask the question: where else might we call home? Directed by his son Rudolph Herzog, Last Exit: Space will be available from March 10 on Discovery.
Gorbachev. Heaven
As leader of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev was once one of the most powerful people on the planet who governed a landmass so big that it covered 11 time zones. Gorbachev’s legacy is a complex one — he oversaw the end of the Cold War but many Russians blame him for the Soviet Union’s collapse. The BBC says this potentially fascinating look at one of the most significant figures from inside his own home will be airing in the very near future.
We Met In Virtual Reality
This film from director Joe Hunting beats fresh ground in that it is filmed entirely in virtual reality. Less about the technology itself, it is more an exploration of human connections and how these can develop in the 3D virtual world. Early reviews have been positive following its showing at Sundance. Expect a streaming release in late May this year.
2nd Chance
Hold your popcorn tightly when watching this. If the trailer (预告片) is anything to go by, there are going to be lots of near-death moments. 2nd Chance from Oscar-nominated director Ramin Bahrani tells the story of Richard Davis, the wild and odd inventor of the modern bullet-proof vest. “All will be revealed as soon as a release date is confirmed.” Ramin Bahrani promised on April 5th.
1. What is probably the major concern in Last Exit: Space?
A. Space travel is difficult for people.
B. Human beings may go to hell after death.
C. Human beings can’t find their way back from space.
D. The earth will become unfit for human habitation.
2. Which documentary film suits people who are interested in studying history?
A. Last Exit: Space. B. Gorbachev. Heaven.
C. We Met In Virtual Reality. D. 2nd Chance.
3. In which section of a magazine can you find this text?
A. Science & Technology. B. Fashion & Beauty.

Russ Miller, 36, from Ohio, was first diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (类风湿性关节炎) when he was just 26, making it progressively difficult for him to do everyday tasks.
“My hands are deformed (畸形的). I can’t bend them like others. Recently my thumb has stopped working,” said Miller in a letter to a company. “I can no longer use normal computer keyboards and it’s hard for me to even hold a pen anymore.”
Russ’ condition resulted in him living on the streets in Florid for 4 years, but in 2018, he started trying to turn his life around. “I was trying to get help and get myself out of my situation. I had a phone, but I struggled to type on keyboards. So I started looking for alternative smartphone keyboards that might enable me to type again. I found the keyboard app Typewise by accident.”
Russ thinks that Typewise smartphone keyboard enables him to get his life back by allowing him to communicate with people, and therefore get help, get an apartment and even get a job. “I am able to communicate a lot better than talking, because my voice is kind of monotone (单调的) so people don’t understand me very well. And because I was able to start typing on my phone again, I was able to use social media to reach out to an organization that helps people with disabilities.” It’s the hexagonal (六边形的) layout of the keyboard that Russ finds a whole lot easier.“ I can move my fingers around and not mess up as often.”
“Now I have a part-time job where I take care of dogs and cats on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I can’t work full time, because of my physical issues but at least I have something to do and something to look forward to.” Russ said.
The company making the smartphone app had been unaware that their unique keyboard design could help people with disabilities until they received Russ’ letter.

I can’t work full time, because of my physical issues but at least I have something to do and something to look forward to.” 故选A。
根据第四段“Russ thinks that Typewise smartphone keyboard enables him to get his life back by allowing him to communicate with people, and therefore get help, get an apartment and even get a job.( Russ认为Typewise智能手机键盘可以让他找回生活,让他能够与人交流,从而获得帮助,找到公寓,甚至找到工作)”结合主要说明了Russ Miller患有类风湿性关节炎,这使得他越来越难以完成日常工作。
C
We are all aware of the damaging pollution that’s created by driving petrol and diesel (柴油) vehicles. Many of the world’s cities are blocked with traffic, creating fumes containing gases such as nitrogen oxides. The solution for a cleaner, greener future could be electric vehicles. But how optimistic should we be? There was much excitement last year when the UK government announced it will ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030. But is that easier said than done?
The road to global traffic being totally electric is still a long way off. Currently, battery life is an issue — a fully charged battery won’t take you as far as a full tank of petrol. There are also limited numbers of charging points to plug an EV into. Of course, technology is always improving. Some of the biggest tech companies, like Google and Tesla, are spending huge amounts of money developing electric cars. And most of the big car manufacturers are now making them too. Colin Herron, a consultant on low-carbon vehicle technology, told the BBC: “The big leap forward will come with solid state batteries, which will appear first in mobile phones and laptops before they progress to cars.” These will charge more quickly and give cars a bigger range. Cost is another issue that may discourage people switching to electric power. But some countries offer incentive, such as cutting prices by reducing import taxes, and not charging for road tax and parking. Some also provide exclusive lanes for electric cars to be driven on, overtaking traditional cars which might be stuck in jams.
These kinds of measures have made Norway the country with the most electric cars per capita (人均) at more than thirty electric cars per 1000 inhabitants. But Colin Herron warns that “electric motoring” doesn’t mean a zero-carbon future. “It’s emission-free motoring, but the car has to be built, the battery has to be built, and the electricity does come from somewhere.” Maybe it’s time to think about making fewer journeys or using public transport.
8. What can we infer from the question at the end of paragraph 1?
A. We should not be too optimistic about the future.
B. Electric vehicles may not solve the traffic problems.
C. It’s not a good idea to replace petrol vehicles with electric ones.
D. It is not easy to obtain a greener future by means of electric vehicles.
9. What does the underlined word “incentive” mean in paragraph 2?
A. payment B. income C. encouragement D. method
10. Which statement is true according to the passage?
A. Electric motoring will create a zero-carbon future.
B. Electric cars might not get stuck in traffic jams in the future.
C. There are four obstacles on the road to global traffic being totally electric.
D. Putting solid-state batteries in electric cars first will be a “great leap forward”.
11. What is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Total Electric Traffic: a Long Way to Go
B. Electric Vehicles: a Road to a Greener Future
C. Electric Power or Petrol: a Tough Decision to Make
D. Petrol and Diesel Vehicles: a Main source of Gases
D 9. C 10. B 11. A
根据第一段最后一句“But is that easier said than done?(但这说起来容易做起来难吗?)” 第二段第一句“The road to global traffic being totally electric is still a long way off.(实现全球交通完全电动化的道路还有很长的路要走。)”
根据划线词前一句“Cost is another issue that may discourage people switching to electric power.(成本是另一个可能阻碍人们转向电力的问题。)”和划线词后的“such as cutting prices by reducing import taxes, and not charging for road tax and parking. (比如通过降低进口税来降低价格,以及不收取道路税和停车费。)”可知,划线词后的举例是对incentive的进一步说明,通过降低进口税来降价以及不收取道路税和停车费,这些有助于降低购买和使用成本,有助于激励人们购买,incentive意为“激励措施”,与encouragement(起激励作用的事物)意思最接近。故选C。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。文章第二段讲到“Currently, battery life is an issue (目前,电池寿命是一个问题)”以及“Cost is another issue that may discourage people switching to electric power. (成本是另一个可能阻碍人们转向电力的问题。)”可知,C项“在全球交通完全电动化的道路上有四个障碍”是错误的。最后一段讲到“But Colin Herron warns that “electric motoring” doesn’t mean a zero-carbon future (但是科林·赫伦警告说“电动汽车”并不意味着零碳排放的未来)”可知,A项“电动汽车将创造一个零碳的未来”是错误的。第二段还讲到“The big leap forward will come with solid state batteries, which will appear first in mobile phones and laptops before they progress to cars (固态电池将带来巨大的飞跃,它将首先出现在手机和笔记本电脑中,然后才会发展为汽车)”可知,D项“首先将固态电池应用于电动汽车将是一次“大跃进””是错误的。根据第二段“Some also provide exclusive lanes for electric cars to be driven on, overtaking traditional cars which might be stuck in jams.(一些国家还为电动汽车提供专用车道,超越可能陷入拥堵的传统汽车。)”
通读全文,尤其是第二段“The road to global traffic being totally electric is still a long way off.(实现全球交通完全电动化的道路还有很长的路要走。)” 故选A。
D
Each of us individually is the accumulated product of thousands of generations that have come before us in an unbroken line. Our culture and technology today are also the result of thousands of years of accumulated, and remixed cultural knowledge. Cumulative culture allowed human populations to build on and recombine the solutions of prior generations and to develop new complex solutions to problems very quickly, thus helping humans to adapt to a diversity of environments and challenges. However, it is unclear when cumulative culture first developed during ancient human evolution.
In order to explore the origin of cumulative culture, Perreault analyzed changes in the complexity of stone tool manufacturing techniques across the past 3.3 million years of the archaeological record. As a baseline for the complexity of stone tool technologies achievable without cumulative culture, Perreault first analyzed technologies used by nonhuman primates, such as chimpanzees (大猩猩). He then analyzed stone tool manufacturing experiments involving inexperienced human flintknapping (燧石加工技术) and randomized flaking (石片打制技术). Perreault assessed the complexity of the stone tool technologies by counting the number of steps (procedural units, or PUs) involved in each tool-making sequence.
The results suggested that from around 3.3 to 1.8 million years ago, stone tool-making sequences remained within the baseline range(1 to 6 PUs). From around 1.8 million to 600,000 years ago, making sequences began to overlap with and even slightly exceed the baseline complexity (4 to 7 PUs). However, after around 600,000 years ago, the complexity of making sequences increased rapidly (5 to 18PUs). “From around-600,009 years ago. ancient human populations started relying on unusually complex technologies, and we only see rapid increases in complexity after that time as well,” said Perreault.
Tool-assisted food-hunting may have been the motive for the earliest beginning of the evolution of cumulative culture. Early ancient humans,3.4 to 2 million years ago, likely relied on strategies that require tools — like accessing meat, marrow and organs — leading to changes in brain size, lifespan and biology that set the stage for cumulative culture.
12. What does cumulative culture refer to according to the text?
A. Emphasizing individual development.
B. Paying attention to reforming social structure.
C. Adapting to a changing living condition step by step.
D. Building up technological improvements over generations.
13. What’s Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. How Perreault conducted the research.
B. What the baseline of cumulative culture was.
C. How important stone tool technologies were.
D. Why Perreault chose chimpanzees for the study.
14. Which of the following is true about what happened around 600,000 years ago?
A. The population of the earth increased sharply.
B. Tool-making sequences remained unchanged.
C. The ancestors began to make stone tools.
D. The technology reached a turning point.
15. Why are strategies that require tools mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To indicate the significance of common culture.
B. To show the result of human brains’ changes.
C. To illustrate the motive of cumulative culture.
D. To stress the eating habits of human ancestors.
D 13. A 14. D 15. C
根据文章第一段“Cumulative culture allowed human populations to build on and recombine the solutions of prior generations and to develop new complex solutions to problems very quickly, thus helping humans to adapt to a diversity of environments and challenges.(累积文化允许人类群体在前代的解决方案基础上进行构建和重组,并能够非常快速地发展出解决新问题的复杂方案,因此帮助人类适应各种环境和挑战。)”
根据文章第二段“In order to explore the origin of cumulative culture, Perreault analyzed changes in the complexity of stone tool manufacturing techniques across the past 3.3 million years of the archaeological record. As a baseline for the complexity of stone tool technologies achievable without cumulative culture, Perreault first analyzed technologies used by nonhuman primates, such as chimpanzees(大猩猩). Perreault assessed the complexity of the stone tool technologies by counting the number of steps (procedural units, or PUs) involved in each tool-making sequence.(为了探索累积文化的起源,Perreault分析了过去330万年考古记录中石器制作技术复杂性的变化。作为无需累积培养即可实现的石器技术复杂性的基线,Perreault首先分析了黑猩猩等非人灵长类动物使用的技术。然后,他分析了涉及缺乏经验的人类燧石加工技术和石片打制技术。通过计算每个工具制造序列中涉及的步骤的数量来评估石器技术的复杂性。)”可知,本段主要介绍了Perreault开展研究的具体方法与策略。故选A项。
根据第三段中的“The results suggested that from around 3.3 to 1.8 million years ago, stone tool-making sequences remained within the baseline range(1 to 6 PUs). From around 1.8 million to 600,000 years ago, making sequences began to overlap with and even slightly exceed the baseline complexity (4 to 7 PUs). However, after around 600,000 years ago, the complexity of making sequences increased rapidly (5 to 18PUs).(结果表明,从大约30万到180万年前,石器制造序列保持在极限范围内(1个到6个PUs)。从大约180万年前到60万年前,制作序列开始于基线复杂性重叠(4到7个PUs),甚至略高于基线复杂性。然而,在大约60万年前之后,制作序列的复杂性迅速增加(5到8个PUs)。)”可知,在60万年前这个时间节点后,早期人类工具制作的复杂性开始显著提升,即这是一个转折点。故选D项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Tool-assisted food-hunting may have been the motive for the earliest beginning of the evolution of cumulative culture. Early ancient humans,3.4 to 2 million years ago, likely relied on strategies that require tools — like accessing meat, marrow and organs — leading to changes in brain size, lifespan and biology that set the stage for cumulative culture.
When you look ahead at the year to come, I hope you focus on all the positives even if the negatives exist, because positive thinking can help you get where you want to go.
Positive thinking is not the same as optimism. Being optimistic means believing that everything is going to work out great. But positive thinking is more than that. It’s a mindset or a way of looking at the world and what you do. ___16___
To think positively, first of all, we need to look at problems, mistakes and failures as normal. Imagine you bomb a big job interview. A negative thinker will be upset by the fact that he didn’t get the job. ___17___ He will analyze what he did and figure out how to do it better next time. And he’ll also think about what he did well and try to repeat and improve on those successes. This means focusing on the big picture.
One trick to positive thinking is to imagine how you’ll think back to things that are happening now. ___18___ There are bad things that happened last year that you can probably laugh about now. You understand what was a big deal and what was not. Try to do that in the present.
___19___ A negative thinker will focus on the past, especially past failures. But the past cannot be changed. It’s done and dusted. The future, however, is yet to be written. And that’s where the positive thinker will focus his attention.
Positive thinking is a mental habit. It takes practice. Sometimes, we have to remind ourselves to focus on the future and on possibility. ___20___ But if you can do it, there are some great payoffs: greater confidence, a better chance of success, better health condition as well as a better quality of life.
A. A positive thinker will learn from the experience.
B. Negative thinkers will look at failures as end points.
C. Positive thinking often means separating the past and the future.
D. It’s a belief in possibility, solutions to problems and the big picture.
E. Sometimes, it’s hard to learn from our failures or see the big picture.
F. We can see the power of positive thinking when it comes to problem-solving.
G. You know from experience that the passing of time brings a fresh perspective.
D 17. A 18. G 19. C 20. E
空前“But positive thinking is more than that. It’s a mindset or a way of looking at the world and what you do.(但积极的思考不止于此。它是一种心态,一种看待世界和你所做事情的方式。)”说明了积极的思考的含义,D选项“It’s a belief in possibility, solutions to problems and the big picture.(这是一种对可能性的信念,对问题的解决方案和大局的信念。)”
空前“A negative thinker will be upset by the fact that he didn’t get the job.(消极的思考者会因为没有得到那份工作而心烦意乱。)”说明了消极的思考者会如何做,空后“He will analyze what he did and figure out how to do it better next time. And he’ll also think about what he did well and try to repeat and improve on those successes.(他会分析他所做的,并找出下次如何做得更好。他也会思考自己做得好的地方,并试图在这些成功的基础上重复和改进。)”说明的是另一种人的做法,根据句意可知,这个人的做法很积极,应该说的是积极的思考者,A选项“A positive thinker will learn from the experience.(积极的思考者会从经验中学习。)”说明了积极的思考者会从经验中学习,和前面的消极的思考者的做法形成对比,且引出下文积极思考者的做法,因此承上启下,符合语境,故选A。
【18题详解】
空前“One trick to positive thinking is to imagine how you’ll think back to things that are happening now.(积极思考的一个技巧是想象你将如何回想现在发生的事情。)”说明的是积极思考的一个技巧是回想发生过的事情,也就是从经历过的事情中学习,G选项“You know from experience that the passing of time brings a fresh perspective.(你从经验中知道,时间的流逝会带来新的视角。)”是从经历过的事情中了解到的东西,承接上文,下文“There are bad things that happened last year that you can probably laugh about now. You understand what was a big deal and what was not.(去年发生的一些糟糕的事情,你现在或许可以一笑置之。你知道什么是大事,什么不是。)”举例说明从经验中学习。故选G。
【19题详解】

2nd Chance

C. He was homeless for several years. D. His computer skills got worse.
5. How did Russ change his life through Typewise?
A. By getting what he wanted. B. By promoting it to the disabled.
C. By creating his social media. D. By communicating with people better.
6. What does Russ think of his current job?
A. It’s satisfying. B. It’s boring. C. It’s promising. D. It’s challenging.
7. What would be the best title for the text?

We are all aware of the damaging pollution that’s created by driving petrol and diesel (柴油) vehicles. Many of the world’s cities are blocked with traffic, creating fumes containing gases such as nitrogen oxides. The solution for a cleaner, greener future could be electric vehicles. But how optimistic should we be? There was much excitement last year when the UK government announced it will ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030. But is that easier said than done?
The road to global traffic being totally electric is still a long way off. Currently battery life is an issue — a fully charged battery won’t take you as far as a full tank of petrol.
