Last Friday, Britain’s Prince William announced the winners of this year’s Earthshot Prize. The prize is meant to encourage new ideas and rapid action to help protect the planet. Below are parts of this year’s prize-winning projects in each category.
Protect and Restore Nature
Kheyti won the prize for protecting and restoring nature with its “Greenhouse-in-a-box” idea. Kheyti is already working with 1, 000 farmers across India, which is one of the most climate-affected countries in the world. The company says the greenhouses allow farmers to use 90% less water and produce seven times as much food. Kheyti hopes to get its greenhouses to 50,000 farmers by 2027.
Clean Our Air
Charlot Magayi won the prize for cleaning the air. Ms. Magayi developed a stove (炉子) that uses a fuel that’s cheaper and pollutes far less than charcoal stoves. Currently, over 200,000 of her Clean Stoves are being used in Kenya.
Build a Waste-Free World
A London-based company called Notpla(for “Not Plastic”)won the prize for building a waste-free world. They’ve created a plastic substitute(替代品)from plants found in the ocean. Unlike most plastic, their products break down naturally with no microplastics. Notpla believes their products can help end the plastic pollution that’s filling landfills and polluting oceans.
Fix Our Climate
The Earthshot Prize for working toward fixing our climate went to a company called 44.01 from Oman. 44.01 has come up with a way to turn polluting carbon dioxide(CO2)into a rock called peridotite. Once the CO2 has been turned into rock, it can no longer be released into the atmosphere again. The method that 44.01 uses is fast, cheap and permanent.

Cruz Genet, 11, and Anthony Skopick, 10, couldn’t agree. Were the birds out on the ice ducks or geese? So on a cold January evening last year, the two friends ventured (冒险) onto the frozen pond near their homes in Frankfort, Illinois, to get a better look. First, they threw a rock onto the ice to test it, Cruz told NBC 5 Chicago. “Then we stepped on it.” Convinced the ice would hold their weight, Anthony took a few steps, but then he fell through the seemingly frozen surface.
Cruz rushed to help his panicked friend. However, the pond swallowed him, too. Cruz managed to lift himself out of the extremely cold water and onto a more solid section. He then gingerly worked his way toward Anthony. But the ice didn’t hold, and he fell in again. This ime, he couldn’t get out.
The boys were up to their necks in icy water and quickly losing feeling. Any chance of their freeing themselves was slipping away. Cruz was sure that he was going to die.
Anthony’s older sister had seen the boys fall through the ice and started screaming, wishing someone to save them.
John Lavin, a neighbor driving nearby on his way to the grocery store, heard her. He quickly pulled over. Seeing the boys, he grabbed (抓住) a nearby buoy (救生圈), kicked off his shoes, and ran into the cold water, struggling his way through the ice. Lavin made his way to Cruz and Anthony and pulled them back to land.
The boys were taken to the hospital where doctors discovered that their five- minute stay in the water had lowered their body temperature nearly ten degrees. Fortunately, they have fully recovered, though they are still a little amazed by their fearless neighbor. “Just to think,” says Cruz, “if he hadn’t been there, I could have died.”
4. Why did the boys venture onto the frozen pond?
A. To have a better look at the frozen pond.
B. To catch the birds in the pond with rocks.
C. To find out what the birds on the ice were.
D. To test the thickness of the ice in the pond.
5. What does the underlined word “gingerly” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Casually. B. Proudly.
C. Firmly. D. Cautiously.
6. What drew John Lavin’s attention to the boys?
A. Anthony’s older sister’s cry for help. B. Cruz’s loud and frightening scream.
C. Their shoes along the nearby pond. D. Their neighbors’ pulling them back.
7. Which of the following words can best describe John Lavin?
A. Hard-working and helpful. B. Warm-hearted and courageous.
C. Curious and selfless. D. Active and generous.

A recent study published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society suggests that Leonardo da Vinci was more experimental with his well-known “Mona Lisa” than previously thought and was likely the creator of a technique seen in works used a century later.
A team of scientists in France and Britain has detected a rare mineral compound (矿物化合物), plumbonacrite, within the piece. Plumbonacrite forms when lead oxides (铅氧化物) combine with oil. Mixing these two substances is the technique that later artists like Rembrandt used to help the paint dry, according to the study.
Detecting the rare compound in the “Mona Lisa” suggested that Leonardo could have been the original user of this approach, said Gilles Wallez, an author of the study. “Everything that comes from Leonardo is very interesting, because he had lots of ideas, and he was an experimenter, attempting to improve the knowledge of his time,” Wallez said, “Each time you discovered something in his processes, you discovered that he was clearly ahead of his time.”
The “Mona Lisa”, like many other paintings from the 16th century, was created on a piece of wood that required a thick base layer. The researchers believed that Leonardo had made his mixture of lead oxide powder with linseed oil to produce the thick coat of paint needed for the first layer, while unknowingly creating the rare compound.
Nowadays, researchers aren’t allowed to take samples from the masterpiece, which resides at the Louvre in Paris and is protected behind glass. Using a microsample that had been taken from an area of the artwork just behind the frame, however, scientists were able to analyze the paint by using a high-tech machine. “These samples have a very high cultural value,” Wallez said. “You can’t afford to take big samples on a painting.”
8. Why is Rembrandt mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To demonstrate his unique talent for painting.
B. To explain how he used the technique correctly.
C. To stress what made him different from other painters.
D. To show the technique was useful for drying the paint.
9. What did Wallez think of Leonardo da Vinci?
A. Independent. B. Strict. C. Pioneering. D. Friendly.
10. How did researchers think Leonardo da Vinci created the rare compound?
A. By accident. B. With other painters’ help.
C. By reading many books. D. Through various attempts.
11. What can be learned about the “Mona Lisa” from the last paragraph?
A. It didn’t contain plumbonacrite. B. Analyzing its paint is invaluable but costly.
C. It was created in the 17th century. D. Taking its samples is an easy task now.
D
Contrary to “popular opinion”, the scientific pursuit for knowledge is not a predictable process. To make new discoveries, researchers need the freedom to be creative, fail, and learn by chance. This aspect is similar to art. This is why Wageningen scientists look to artists for inspiration and exchange ideas about how to increase creative freedom.
“Science and art are two different ways to make something understandable. They both provide a perspective on reality,” says Biochemistry Professor Dolf Weijers. “From the outside, the research process looks very formal and the artistic process looks somewhat messy. But the scientific process can also unfold in an unpredictable way.”
“Scientists can learn a lot from artists,” says Weijers. “Association and creativity are central to art. Those aspects require more attention in science as the creative process is the key of science.”
“As a scientist, you use different methods, but it is equally about how you visualize your understandings of reality and the connections between them. This is sometimes just as visual as art,” says Weijers. One example is a recent special project in which Weijers and his colleague Joris Sprakel, professor of Physical Chemistry and Soft Matter, measured the forces that act on plant cells. A molecular (分子的) sensor was used to visualize the different forces. They showed the results in colorful images, each representing a different force.
What science and art also have in common is that they are topics of discussion in society. There are people who say that they do not value art and people who mistrust science. Weijers says, “It often creates the wrong impression because only the results of scientific studies are presented, and people do not have any insight into the process leading to discovery. As a scientist, you are doubted if you say something that is different a few years later. Then you are viewed as unreliable. But what is often poorly understood is that there are no final results in science. What we scientists can achieve in the coming period is to provide more chances for people to focus on the process. Personally, I think that the connection with art can help to lead the focus on the process than the result.”
12. What does Dolf Weijers think of science process?
A. It is always serious. B. It can’t be accidental.
C. It doesn’t allow failures. D. It can be unexpected.
13. What does the underlined sentence “This is sometimes just as visual as art” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Visualizing is a must for science.
B. Science can be visualized like art.
C. Science should be understood by visualizing.
D. Visualizing is as easy in science as in art.
14. Why do common people mistrust science in Dolf Weijers’ opinion?
A. Scientists usually draw unreliable conclusions.
B. Scientists don’t use visualizing to show the results.
C. The scientific process is unknown to them.
D. The scientific results are complex for the public.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Differences Between Science and Art
B. Similarities Between Science and Art
C. Scientists and Artists Contribute to the World
D. Science and Art Are Tools to Understand the World

As the graduation ceremony’s class speaker, Verda Tetteh, a senior at Fitchburg High School, had just finished her speech and taken a seat when the school made an exciting announcement that Verda had been awarded Fitchburg High School’s General Excellence Scholarship, valued at $ 40,000. She had a few moments to reflect as the ceremony continued. Ten minutes later, she knew what to do. She returned to the platform and apologized for interrupting. Then she made an announcement that shocked the crowd. She refused the scholarship and requested that the funds instead be awarded to a student who needed it more than she did.
“I am very grateful for this, but I also know that I am not the one who needs this the most,” Verda said.
Her generous gesture shocked the audience, made up of her fellow classmates, their families and faculty (全体教员) members. Her mother, Rosemary, loudly cheered her daughter on from the audience.
Verda is planning on going to Harvard University in the fall as a pre-med (医学院预科的) student. The straight-A honor student has already been awarded a full scholarship for her Ivy League college education. However, she could have used her school’s scholarship to help pay for additional expenses such as books, computers and living expenses.
Verda knew, though, just how important a college scholarship is to a student whose family is financially struggling. Her mother earned her bachelor’s degree from a local community college at age 47, while raising her four children and holding down two jobs to support her family. Her mother’s determination to get an education despite her financial hardship inspired the young woman’s selfless decision. She wanted the funds to go to a student pursuing a community college degree, just as her mother once had.
That day, Rosemary took pride in her daughter. “Now I’m 100% sure she is ready to go into the world on her own,” she said.

However the pond swallowed him, too.
The boys were taken to the hospital, where doctors discovered that their five- minute stay in the water had lowered their body temperature nearly ten degrees. Fortunately, they have fully recovered, though they are still a little amazed by their fearless neighbor. “Just to think,” says Cruz, “if he hadn’t been there, I could have died.”

【答案】8. D 9. C 10. A 11. B

C. Scientists and Artists Contribute to the World
D. Science and Art Are Tools to Understand the World
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. B
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇议论文。文章论述了艺术创作和科学研究之间的关系。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。 根据第二段的“But the scientific process can also unfold in an unpredictable way.(但科学过程也可能以一种不可预测的方式展开)”可知,Dolf Weijers认为科学过程是不可预料的。故选D。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线句前“‘As a scientist, you use different methods, but it is equally about how you visualize your understandings of reality and the connections between them.’(作为一名科学家,你使用不同的方法,但同样重要的是你如何将你对现实的理解以及它们之间的联系可视化)”可知,不管使用什么方法,重要的是要将科学家对现实的理解以及它们之间的联系可视化。由此猜测,画线句句意为“科学能够像艺术一样视觉化”。故选B。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段的“It often creates the wrong impression because only the results of scientific studies are presented, and people do not have any insight into the process leading to discovery.(它往往会造成错误的印象,因为只有科学研究的结果被呈现出来,而人们对导致发现的过程没有任何见解)”可知,Dolf Weijers认为普通大众不了解科学过程,所以他们通常不信任科学研究。故选C。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。 通读全文,并结合第一段的“To make new discoveries, researchers need the freedom to be creative, fail, and learn by chance. This aspect is similar to art. This is why Wageningen scientists look to artists for inspiration and exchange ideas about how to increase creative freedom.(为了做出新的发现,研究人员需要有创造性、失败和偶然学习的自由。这方面与艺术相似。这就是为什么瓦赫宁根的科学家们向艺术家寻求灵感,并就如何增加创作自由交换想法)”可知,本文主要论述了科学研究与艺术创作之间的相似之处。因此B项“科学和艺术的相似之处”可以作为本文的最佳标题。故选B。

We volunteers put up posters and signs promoting food saving on campus to increase awareness of respecting food labor and valuing food among students. Also, class meetings were held to make a change in the students’ attitude and encourage them to become eco-pioneers.

In addition, she ought to have a kind heart and help those who need help. She never forgot the valuable life lessons. She struggled to work hard to achieve her dream and help more people as possible.
The young woman expressed no regrets over her decision to give away the money. She said that she was excited to see the money could help those who needed help. And she wished that what she did could change their life. She said she was thankful that her mother could support her decision.
