A
Sugar has been linked to serious diseases like heart disease, diabetes and even cancer, which is why it's vital to cut down on foods and drinks that are high in sugar. Take a look at the drinks that contain a surprising amount of hidden sugars and what you should be eating instead.
Fruit juices
While fruit juices can contain some important vitamins and minerals, they are typically full of sugar. Unfortunately, the fiber that fruit naturally contains and that helps the body keep blood sugar stable has also been removed. To keep blood sugar levels from rising sharply, choose to eat whole fruits whenever a juice desire comes along.
Sports drinks
Sports drinks might seem like the perfect choice for hydration while exercising, but they contain a high amount of added sugars as they were designed for athletes during fierce and long periods of activity. The only people who actually benefit from sports drinks are professional athletes or marathoners. Unless that's you, just stick to plain water.
Flavored coffees
Flavored coffees are delicious, but they contain hidden sugars as they often rely on artificial syrups (糖浆) for flavoring. A large flavored coffee at some coffee chains has up to 25 teaspoons of sugar. You can still enjoy your morning cup of coffee. Just stick to unflavored and unsweetened versions and avoid creamers high in sugar.
Iced teas
Iced teas can be extremely refreshing on a hot day, but they're typically over-sweetened with sugar or syrups. Some brands of iced tea actually contain a surprising 33 grams of sugar in a 355-milliliter serving. So, look for iced teas without any added sugar or make your own at home so you can save money and control what goes into it.
1. How do fruit juices benefit people?
A. They provide necessary minerals. B. They refuel people during sports.
C. They energize people in the morning. D. They refresh people on hot days.
2. What are common people advised to have while exercising?
A. Fruit juices. B. Flavored coffees. C. Natural water. D. Iced teas.
3. What's the purpose of the text?
A. To introduce four nutritious drinks. B. To discuss the advantages of drinks.
C. To share ways to make drinks at home. D. To warm readers against high-sugar drinks.

根据Fruit juices中第一句“While fruit juices can contain some important vitamins and minerals, they are typically full of sugar.( 虽然果汁含有一些重要的维生素和矿物质,但它们通常富含糖。)” 故选A。
根据Sports drinks中“Sports drinks might seem like the perfect choice for hydration while exercising, but they contain a high amount of added sugars as they were designed for athletes during fierce and long periods of activity.( 运动饮料似乎是运动时补水的完美选择,但它们含有大量的添加糖,因为它们是为在激烈和长时间运动时的运动员设计的。)”和“Unless that's you, just stick to plain water.( 除非你是运动员,若不是,那就喝白开水吧。)”

My granddaughter entertains herself outside a closed shop. I have no idea what day it is - I haven’t known for 10 months. I have moved to a different city to provide child care so that my daughter can work.
Everything I observe these days is from a young child’s eye view. I must be experiencing time and place in a way I haven’t done before. I have let go of all the experiences we’re missing because I’m focused on what matters to this child at any given moment. Puddles (水洼), obviously. Rocks held lovingly in her small fist the whole way home. Burying balls that have sailed over the tennis court fence and landed in the sandbox, and her face lighting up when they are dug up. Every single time.
My job is to wait and watch. Let her try things, comfort her when she falls down, and keep her safe. Bring snacks, push her on a swing, but mostly let her be. Tell her the names of all the things she points to. Take her hand when she offers it because she is in a slightly unfamiliar area. The two of us never hurry. This lifestyle change astonishes me every day.
Who knows how her new brain processes all this? I have been forced by circumstance into the arms of the people I need to take care of me. Taking care of my granddaughter is a front. In fact, she gave me much more.
In March 2020, I lost my younger daughter. I can’t say it was entirely unexpected. My younger daughter battled mental illness. She was only 27 years old. She put herself through long treatment programs to reduce her pain. It was as if the whole world went on leave with me. I had company for a few brief days after my younger daughter’s death, and then I was alone. I signed up for the various things that might reduce my suffering. I went 15 weeks without touching another person.
Now a very small girl waits for me, watches me, comforts me, keeps me safe, and takes my hand.
4. Why has the author lost track of time?
A. She feels bored with her present life.
B. She has suffered from a mental disease.
C. She enjoys being with her granddaughter.
D. She is in sorrow over the loss of her daughter.
5 The underlined word “front” in Paragraph 4 probably means “________”
A. deal B. must C. burden D. cover
6. What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. The author’s effort to save her younger daughter.
B. The measures taken to reduce the author’s suffering.
C. The younger daughter’s battle against mental illness.
D. The pain caused by an unbearable loss to the author.
7. What does the author want to express in this passage?
A. It’s a child who has helped her to slowly recover.
B. Staying with grandchildren is a comfort for elders.
C. Family members should help each other out of pain.
D. Physical separation has harmful effects on one’s health.
C 5. D 6. D 7. A
根据第一段“My granddaughter entertains herself outside a closed shop. I have no idea what day it is - I haven’t known for 10 months. I have moved to a different city to provide child care so that my daughter can work.”(我的外孙女在一家关门的商店外自娱自乐。
根据第四段第二三句“I have been forced by circumstance into the arms of the people I need to take care of me. Taking care of my granddaughter is a front. In fact, she gave me much more.”(我被迫投入需要照顾我的人的怀抱。
根据第五段“In March 2020, I lost my younger daughter. I went 15 weeks without touching another person.”(2020年3月,我失去了我的小女儿。
根据最后一段“Now a very small girl waits for me, watches me, comforts me, keeps me safe, and takes my hand.”(现在一个小女孩在等着我,看着我,安慰我,保护我,牵着我的手。) 故选A。
C
We humans are addicted to sugar. That makes sense. All animals need sugar to live. It’s the fuel that powers our cells. So it’s not surprising that we’re born to want the sweet stuff.
Sugar stores the sun’s energy like a battery. After a meal, your body breaks down foods into their building blocks. It uses some sugar for energy right away. The rest get stored for the body to break down later. It’s a myth that sugar makes you extremely excited, but having a sugary snack can give you a quick burst of energy. That’s because the sugar in sweet foods is easy for your body to turn into fuel. When you eat other kinds of foods, like vegetables, it takes longer for your body to break the sugar down.
These days it’s easy to find sweet snacks. Sodas, candy, cakes and even foods that seem healthy, such as yogurt, can be packed with sugar. Food makers add sugar, because they know that to humans, sweet makes everything taste better. Americans eat about 20 teaspoons of extra sugar every day. That’s more than what is good for us.
Eating too much sugar can cause more than a stomachache. It can make people overweight, decay the teeth and even cause diabetes(糖尿病). However, experts aren’t worried about naturally sweet foods — the problem is added sugar. So go ahead and enjoy sweet apples or even sugarrich carrots that are also full of vitamins and other good stuff.
Even cake is great once in a while, as long as you don’t overdo it. After all, no one wants life to be dull. And your body needs its fuel!
8. The first two paragraphs are mainly developed by ________.
A. giving examples B. problem and solution
C. cause and effect D. making comparisons
9. People may be tricked into eating too much sugar because ________.
A. so-called healthy food can be packed with sugar
B. we’re born to want the sweet stuff
C no one wants life to be boring
D. sugar is the fuel for the plants and animals on the earth
10. What does the author want to stress in Paragraph 4?
A. We’d better say no to sweet foods.
B. We’d better consume sugar from natural sources.
C. Eating too much sugar is bad for our health.
D. Experts are worried about added sugar.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Sugar Is Everywhere B. Sugar Brings Happiness
C. Why Do We Love Sugar? D. Why Does Sugar Make Us Fat?
C 9. A 10. B 11. C
根据第一自然段“So it’s not surprising that we’re born to want the sweet stuff.(所以,我们生来就想要甜的东西并不奇怪。)”和第二自然段“Sugar stores the sun’s energy like a battery.(糖像电池一样储存太阳的能量。)”
根据第三自然段“These days it’s easy to find sweet snacks. Sodas, candy, cakes and even foods that seem healthy, such as yogurt, can be packed with sugar.(现在很容易找到甜点心。苏打水、糖果、蛋糕甚至看起来健康的食物,如酸奶,都可以加糖。)”可知,人们可能会被骗吃太多的糖,因为所谓的健康食品可以包含很多糖。故选A。
根据第四自然段“However, experts aren’t worried about naturally sweet foods—the problem is added sugar. So go ahead and enjoy sweet apples or even sugar-rich carrots that are also full of vitamins and other good stuff.(然而,专家们并不担心天然甜味食品——问题是添加糖。
D
You've probably heard it suggested that you need to move more throughout the day, and as a general rule of thumb, that "more" is often defined as around 10,000 steps. With many Americans tracking their steps via new fitness-tracking wearables, or even just by carrying their phone, more and more people use the 10,000-step rule as their marker for healthy living. Dr. Dreg Hager, professor of computer science at Johns Hopkins, decided to take a closer look at that 10,000-step rule, and he found that using it as a standard may be doing more harm than good for many.
“It turns out that in 1960 in Japan they figured out that the average Japanese man, when he walked 10,000 steps a day burned something like 3,000 calories and that is what they thought the average person should consume so they picked 10,000 steps as a number” Hager said.
According to Hager, asking everyone to shoot for 10,000 steps each day could be harmful to the elderly or those with medical conditions, making it unwise for them to jump into that level of exercise, even if it's walking. The bottom line is that 10,000 steps may be too many for some and too few for others. He also noted that those with shorter legs have an easier time hitting the 10,000-step goal because they have to take more steps than people with longer legs to cover the distance. It seems that 10,000 steps may be suitable for the latter.
A more recent study focused on older women and how many steps can help maintain good health and promote longevity (长寿).The study included nearly 17,000 women with an average age of 72. Researchers found that women who took 4,400 steps per day were about 40% less likely to die during a follow-up period of just over four years: Interestingly, women in the study who walked more than 7,500 steps each day got no extra boost in longevity.
12. What does the underlined word "it' in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. The phone recording. B. The 10,000-step rule.
C. The healthy living. D. The fitness-tracking method.
13. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. How many steps a Japanese walks.
B. How we calculate the number of steps.
C. If burning 3,000 calories daily is scientific.
D. Where 10,000 steps a day came from.
14. Who will probably benefit from 10,000 steps each day according to Hager?
A. Senior citizens. B. Young short-legged people.
C. Healthy long-legged people D. Weak individuals.
15. How many steps may the researchers suggest senior citizens take each day?
A. 4,400 steps. B. 10,000 steps.
C. 2,700 steps. D. 7,500 steps.
B 13. D 14. C 15. A
第一段开头“You've probably heard it suggested that you need to move more throughout the day, and as a general rule of thumb, that "more" is often defined as around 10,000 steps.”(你可能听过这样的建议:一天中你需要多走几步,根据一般经验,“多走”通常被定义为大约10,000步。) Dreg Hager, professor of computer science at Johns Hopkins, decided to take a closer look at that 10,000-step rule,”可知Dreg Hager教授决定仔细研究一万步法则,下文画线词语所在句子“he found that using it as a standard”与上句承接,指把一万步法则作为标准,it即指The 10,000-step rule。
根据第二段“It turns out that in 1960 in Japan they figured out that the average Japanese man, when he walked 10,000 steps a day burned something like 3,000 calories and that is what they thought the average person should consume so they picked 10,000 steps as a number” (结果证明在1960年的日本,他们发现日本人平均每天走一万步会消耗3000卡路里,这是他们认为普通人应该消耗的热量,所以他们选择把一万步作为标准。)
根据第三段“asking everyone to shoot for 10,000 steps each day could be harmful to the elderly or those with medical conditions”(要求每个人每天走一万步可能对老年人或有疾病的人有害)和“those with shorter legs have an easier time hitting the 10,000-step goal because they have to take more steps than people with longer legs to cover the distance. It seems that 10,000 steps may be suitable for the latter.”(那些腿短的人更容易达到10000步的目标,因为他们需要比腿长的人走更多的步来完成这段距离。
根据最后一段“Researchers found that women who took 4,400 steps per day were about 40% less likely to die during a follow-up period of just over four years”(研究人员发现,在四年多的随访期间,每天走4400步的女性死亡的可能性要低40%)可知,研究人员建议老年人每天走4400步,这样可以帮助她们保持健康和延年益寿。故选A。

The only life that Jeffrey had ever known was on the streets. Since his childhood, Jeffrey has been homeless. His mother, Rebecca, was abandoned by her husband, and they were forced to live in the streets without a way to cover living expenses and rent.
Soon afterward, his mom fell ill and passed away. As much as he tried, Jeffrey couldn’t find a permanent job. Jeffrey only had a few clothes, blankets, and shoes, which he would push around in a rusty trolley. With no family or friends, he relied on his local shelter and soup kitchen. He would often ask the workers at a local burger place for their leftovers to survive.
One day, as Jeffrey was looking through the trash can outside the burger shop, he noticed a black object near the surface. He picked it up and realized it was a wallet. When he looked inside, he could recognize the I.D. picture.
The wallet belonged to Alan, a small business owner who stayed a few blocks away. He remembered asking Alan for money a few weeks ago and saying no. Alan said that he was seriously ill and saved every penny for his treatment to get better.
Alan’s cards, driver’s license, and cash were still inside the wallet, meaning he’d lost it by mistake. There was also a check for $3000 inside the wallet. “This is life-changing money. I could get some fresh clothes, maybe rent a small apartment and finally get a job,” Jeffrey mumbled to himself.
Jeffrey knew he couldn’t live with the guilt of knowing a man would suffer if he took the money for himself. Even though he initially felt that the check may have been a gift from God, he quickly realized that it was more of a test.
注意:

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version.
Jeffrey walked a few blocks to Alan’s offices. Alan seemed surprised by the visit. “Hey, Alan. I’m not here to ask for any money. You dropped your wallet in the trashcan.” As Jeffrey presented the wallet to Alan, he grabbed it and began weeping. “You’re a lifesaver, Jeffrey. My operation was scheduled for tomorrow, and I thought I couldn’t pay for it.” Alan said as tears ran down his face. To Jeffrey’s surprise, Alan gave him a big hug. It was the first hug Jeffrey had received in years.
Alan promised to reward Jeffrey for his kindness once here covered. A few weeks later, Alan approached Jeffrey, saying that his operation had been a success and that he had fully recovered. He helped Jeffrey find work as a waiter at a nearby restaurant. Within a year, Jeffrey was able to save enough money to start renting a small apartment close to work and began studying toward his goal. They have remained close friends ever since. Later, with joint efforts, they formed an initiative to help provide food for homeless children in the area.

A
Sugar has been linked to serious diseases like heart disease, diabetes and even cancer, which is why it's vital to cut down on foods and drinks that are high in sugar.
B
D Physical separation has harmful effects on one’s health.
C
We humans are addicted to sugar. That makes sense. All animals need sugar to live. It’s the fuel that powers our cells. So it’s not surprising that we’re born to want the sweet stuff.
Sugar stores the sun’s energy like a battery. After a meal your body breaks down foods into their building blocks.
C. no one wants life to be boring
D. sugar is the fuel for the plants and animals on the earth
10. What does the author want to stress in Paragraph 4?
A We’d better say no to sweet foods.
