Bill Buda’s daughter Alexa Buda shared a video on social media, documenting her dad’s last day as a postman in their neighborhood. In the clip, which has accumulated more than 500,000 views, Bill Buda can be seen delivering the mail to different houses while his family keep him company during his final day.
The wholesome moment shows the community members come together to celebrate Bill Buda, with some standing outside their front doors and decorating their front porch (门廊) with balloons as well as greeting him with drawings and sweet notes. “People will never forget how you made them feel,” Alexa Buda wrote.
After being asked multiple times by the community members about his retirement, Bill Buda decided to make a “save the date” card to tape to the door of the neighborhood and also chose Saturday for his retirement date so he could bid farewell to more people on his route. But he didn’t expect to be met with so many glories. “When you see all that on Saturday, with everybody, kind of, to me, almost going overboard, you’re like, ‘Man, I guess for 24 and a half years on this route, I really must have done something right to have this.’ So it was fantastic,” he said.
Bill Buda began his career as a mailman in 1993 and he rarely missed the work. “I was awarded perfect attendance,” he said. “I think I had a streak of 11 straight years. So, that was something to hang my hat on.”
Although some might think his job looks like “a piece of cake” the actual responsibility is bigger than just delivering mail. “They have no idea that you’re keeping your eyes on their elderly; you’re checking if that garage door has been shut when the kids get off for school,” he explained. “If the mail starts piling up, you had better contact somebody.”
As for his plan for retirement, he is looking forward to hitting as many stadiums as he can.
4. What did Bill Buda do on the last day before he retired?
A. He posted his video on social media.
B. He stayed on duty as he usually did.
C. He accompanied his family at home.
D. He filmed his last day as a mailman.
5. What did the community members do to react to Bill Buda’s retirement?
A. They awaited him in a fresh way.
B. They sent him “save the date” cards.
C. They set a specific day to celebrate.
D. They helped him decorate his door.
6. What kind of man is Bill Buda?
A. Optimistic and objective. B. Sensitive and responsible.
C. Devoted and conservative. D. Committed and considerate.
7. What can be the best title for the text?
A. A postman informed the community of his retirement.
B. A video captured a mailman’s attachment to his work.
C. A mail carrier received a big send-off from his customers.
D. A mailman was dismissed by neighborhood before retiring.

While it’s not news that many individuals turn to arts and crafts for their mental health benefits, most studies have traditionally focused on patient populations. However, recent research indicates that the act of creating art can have positive effects on the general public, and it might even provide a greater sense of fulfillment compared to attending work.
Psychologists’ analysis covered 7,182 participants aged 16 and older sharing their experiences with cultural, digital, and sporting activities. Participants in the survey rated their happiness, anxiety levels, and life satisfaction. They also disclosed whether they felt life was worthwhile and how often they felt lonely. Lastly, the individuals were questioned about their engagement with arts and crafts. Thirty-seven percent had participated in at least one craft activity over the previous 12 months.
The team found that those who practiced arts and crafts activities reported higher happiness, life satisfaction, and feelings that life was worthwhile. On the contrary, the researchers found that crafting did not affect loneliness. This result might be because many artistic processes involve working in solitude.
The study did have some limitations. It’s unclear if crafting is directly causing feelings of well-being. Additionally, Helen Keyes, lead author of the study, admits that the craft activities were linked with only a two percent higher rating regarding the feeling that life was worthwhile. However, she discovered that the boost in life satisfaction was generally higher than what people derive from their jobs. This suggests that arts and crafts can help people who are dissatisfied at work express themselves and find fulfillment — even if they’re not getting paid to paint or knit.
The results are also noteworthy on a population scale. If we are looking for ways to improve the mental health of citizens, increased access to creative activities may be a good starting point. Keyes said, “The next step would be to carry out an experimental study where we measure people’s well-being before and after significant periods of crafting.”
8. What were the participants asked to do in the survey?
A. Create some satisfying artworks.
B. Convey their feelings about crafting arts.
C. Share ways of coping with loneliness.
D. Integrate arts and crafts into their job.
9. What does the underlined phrase “in solitude” mean in paragraph 3?
A. At ease. B. On call. C. By oneself. D. In order.
10. What may Helen Keyes agree with?
A. People working on arts and crafts get less paid.
B. There is no chance that art increases fulfillment.
C. Craftsmen reported having high satisfaction in their jobs.
D. The rise in happiness associated with crafting was small.
11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. The following study will be more detailed.
B. People’s fulfillment needs to be improved.
C. Mentally healthy people do better in creative activities.
D. The number of participants will rise in the next studies.
D
Venus (金星) is nearly Earth’s size. For a long time scientists suspected Venus’ core is about as hot as our planet’s. Internal heat is the main cause of things such as volcanoes and quakes.
Between 1990 and 1992, a NASA spacecraft called Magellan snapped radar pictures of Venus. Much later in recent years, two researchers took another look at them and last year, they reported having spotted a volcanic vent (出口). It was changing shape and seemed to be spilling out lava (岩浆). For further study, researchers searched Magellan photos again for signs of volcanic activity.
During their new research, two more sites showing signs of volcanic activity turned up. One was on the western slopes of a large, low volcano. It’s called Sif Mons. The other was Niobe Planitia. During two of Magellan’s passes over the planet, long winding features appeared at both sites. The researchers thought these snake-like features might be due to landslides, not volcanoes. But the features appeared to spill across the land as lava would. They also showed up at fairly flat sites. Landslides wouldn’t be expected here, the researchers said. “In these two instances, the changes in how the surface looks in radar are best explained by there being lava flows,” said Paul Byrne, a planetary scientist who did not take part in the new study.
It wasn’t easy to uncover these signs of active volcanism. Magellan’s data is relatively low-resolution (低分辨率) and Venus has three times as much dry land as Earth does. Byrne now suspects there are other volcanic sites on the planet. “There’s likely much more to be found,” he says. Researchers agree that Venus could have as much volcanic activity as Earth. Practically, for a long time, scientists thought Venus was geologically dead. But we may have to wait to find out for sure. NASA is planning to launch two probes in the 2030s to map the surface of Venus in far more detail.
12. What is the purpose of the author for writing the first paragraph?
A. To make an illogical assumption. B. To give a specific definition.
C. To add background information. D. To express a novel viewpoint.
13. How did the researchers conduct their new study on Venus’ volcanic activity?
A. By reviewing pictures from long ago.
B. By analyzing the previous reports.
C. By sending a spacecraft to the Venus.
D. By measuring Venus’ core temperatures.
14. What was the snake-like features interpreted before?
A. Evidence of Venus’ volcanoes. B. Evidence of Venus’ landslides.
C. Signs of Venus’ fairly flat land. D. Signs of Venus’ former surface.
15. Why was it hard to uncover signs of active volcanism on Venus?
A. Venus is much larger than Earth.
B. The researchers have limited time.
C. Most volcanoes on Venus are dead.
D. The researchers lacked clear details.

When Hurricane Ian hit Florida, it was a powerful hurricane that brought with it disastrous flooding, winds, and a record-breaking violent storm.
Many Naples, Florida residents like Karen Lauder refused to leave their homes because they underestimated the intensity of the storm. Karen is 84 years old and relies on a wheelchair to get around because she is missing a leg. Her son, Johnny Lauder, tried repeatedly to get her to leave, but she refused.
Johnny and his whole family lived within a few blocks of one another. His wife was out of town during the storm, so the delivery driver and former police officer decided to stay at his son’s house. They kept in constant touch with Karen as the storm raged outside, watching the water rising dangerously all around them. When Karen reported that the water in her house had reached her belly button, he knew he had to take action.
First, Johnny ensured his son and their pets were taken care of. He made everyone climb inside the attic (阁楼), gave them supplies and water, and made sure they had a way to cut through the roof if the water continued to rise. Then, he dove out of a window and began to swim in the street, where cars were floating past him with dangerous currents.
During his time as a police officer in Chicago, Illinois, Johnny worked as a rescue diver. He was obviously a strong swimmer, but the flood water was filled with harmful materials. There was also a strong current, and he had to swim against it for most of his trip to Karen’s.
As he made his way through the water, Johnny stopped periodically to take selfies to show his worried family that he was okay. He also grabbed helpful items he passed along the way, including a life preserver, a kickboard, and a kayak (皮艇).

Although some might think his job looks like “a piece of cake”, the actual responsibility is bigger than just delivering mail.

【答案】8. B 9. C 10. D 11. A
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了最近的研究表明,创作艺术可以对普通大众产生积极影响,甚至可能比工作更能提供满足感。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Psychologists’ analysis covered 7,182 participants aged 16 and older sharing their experiences with cultural, digital, and sporting activities.(心理学家的分析涵盖了7182名16岁及以上的参与者,他们分享了自己在文化、数字和体育活动方面的经历)”可知,在调查中,参与者被要求表达他们对艺术创作的感受。故选B。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词组上文“The team found that those who practiced arts and crafts activities reported higher happiness, life satisfaction, and feelings that life was worthwhile. On the contrary, the researchers found that crafting did not affect loneliness.(研究团队发现,那些参与艺术和手工艺活动的人报告的幸福感、生活满意度以及认为生活有意义的感受都更高。相反,研究人员发现,手工艺活动并不会影响孤独感)”可知,这个结果可能是因为许多艺术过程都需要一个人独自完成,所以不会影响孤独感。由此可知,in solitude意为“独自地”,与选项C“By oneself(独自地)”意思一致。故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Additionally, Helen Keyes, lead author of the study, admits that the craft activities were linked with only a two percent higher rating regarding the feeling that life was worthwhile.(此外,该研究的主要作者Helen Keyes承认,在感觉生活有价值方面,这些手工活动仅使人们对生活的价值感的评价提高了2%)”可推知,Helen Keyes可能会同意这样的观点:与手工制作相关的幸福感上升幅度很小。故选D。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Keyes said, “The next step would be to carry out an experimental study where we measure people’s well-being before and after significant periods of crafting.”(Keyes说:“下一步我们将进行一项实验性研究,测量人们在长时间手工艺活动前后幸福感的变化。”)”可推知,接下来的研究将会更加详细,通过实验来具体测量手工艺活动对人们幸福感的影响。故选A。

Venus (金星) is nearly Earth’s size. For a long time, scientists suspected Venus’ core is about as hot as our planet’s.
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. B 15. D

【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第一段“Venus (金星) is nearly Earth’s size. For a long time, scientists suspected Venus’ core is about as hot as our planet’ s. Internal heat is the main cause of things such as volcanoes and quakes.(金星的大小几乎和地球一样。很长一段时间以来,科学家们怀疑金星的核心温度和我们的星球差不多。内部热量是火山和地震等现象的主要原因。)”以及第二段中的“Much later in recent years, two researchers took another look at them and last year, they reported having spotted a volcanic vent (出口). It was changing shape and seemed to be spilling out lava (岩浆). For further study, researchers searched Magellan photos again for signs of volcanic activity.(近年来,两名研究人员对它们进行了另一次研究,并在去年报告说,他们发现了一个火山口。它正在改变形状,似乎正在喷出熔岩。为了进一步研究,研究人员再次搜索麦哲伦号的照片,寻找火山活动的迹象。)”可知,第一段介绍了科学家长久以来对金星的猜测:其核心温度与地球在内部热量方面相似,内热是存在火山和地震的主要原因,作者在下文主要介绍了关于金星是否存在火山的研究;由此可知,作者写第一段的目的是添加背景信息。故选C。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“For further study, researchers searched Magellan photos again for signs of volcanic activity.(为了进一步研究,研究人员再次搜索了麦哲伦号的照片,寻找火山活动的迹象。)”可知,研究人员是通过回顾很久以前的图片来对金星的火山活动进行新研究的。故选A。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“The researchers thought these snake-like features might be due to landslides, not volcanoes. But the features appeared to spill across the land as lava would. They also showed up at fairly flat sites. Landslides wouldn’t be expected here, the researchers said.(研究人员认为,这些蛇形特征可能是由于山体滑坡,而不是火山。但这些特征似乎像熔岩一样溢出了整个陆地。他们也出现在相当平坦的地点。研究人员说,这里不会发生山体滑坡。)”可知,以前蛇形特征被解释为金星山体滑坡的证据。故选B。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Magellan’s data is relatively low-resolution (低分辨率) and Venus has three times as much dry land as Earth does.(麦哲伦号的数据分辨率相对较低,而且金星的陆地面积是地球的三倍。)”可推知,很难发现金星上有活跃火山活动的迹象是因为用于研究的图片的数据分辨率相对较低,研究人员缺乏清晰的细节。故选D。

Karen was shaking like a leaf, so Johnny found some clean sheets and wrapped her up.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Johnny was racing against the clock. Every second counted as the water continued to rise. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, he reached Karen’s house. The front door was locked, but fortunately, a window on the side was slightly open. He squeezed through the narrow gap, coughing and spluttering as the dirty water lapped at his face. He found Karen sitting on her wheelchair, terrified and helpless. With great effort, he lifted her onto his back and swam back out, fighting the strong currents all the way.
Karen was shaking like a leaf, so Johnny found some clean sheets and wrapped her up. He tried to calm her down, reassuring her that everything would be alright. They made their way to the kayak he had found earlier, and with some difficulty, managed to get Karen inside. Paddling through the flooded streets was exhausting, but Johnny’s determination kept him going. Eventually, they reached a safe shelter where medical personnel were waiting to assist them. Karen was taken care of, and Johnny finally allowed himself to breathe a sigh of relief.
