When you find math hard, you usually ask teachers or parents for help. But now, doctors can help you too!
On Oct. 8, Shanghai opened a special clinic (门诊) for children who have problems with math and spatial (空间的) understanding. On that day, six students went there with their parents.
At the clinic, doctors checked how well the students understood math and their spatial skills, and then made plans to help them learn better. They even had special educational games with VR and AR technologies to help students.
A recent study found that about 8.97 percent of children at primary school on the Chinese mainland (中国大陆) have trouble with math and spatial skills, reported Shanghai Daily. Among them, 11.57 percent are in low grades, 10.07 percent are in middle grades and 4.76 percent are in high grades.
The clinic is open every Tuesday. It’s very popular with days getting fully booked.
Special clinics for helping with learning problems are becoming common in China, especially in big cities like Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, and Nanjing. However, experts remind parents that these clinics may help students, but they can’t magically turn them into top students. It’s more important to have realistic (实际的) expectations.
Shi Ping from Tianjin Children’s Hospital told China Daily that putting too much pressure on kids can sometimes make learning harder. Parents should think about how they teach their kids and consider making some changes.
After all, just as an expert said, “Doing well in school shouldn’t be the only thing that matters in a child’s life.”

Donald Trump won the 2024 US presidential election! According to the media, Trump received at least 270 electoral votes, which is more than half of the 538 votes needed to win. Trump’s victory was supported by a strong base of voters who admired his economic policies, such as tax cuts and job creation, and his tough attitude on immigration.
Do you know electoral system (选举制度) in the United States?
In the US, people don’t directly vote for the President. Instead, they vote for “electors” who represent their state, which called the “Electoral College” (选举人团制度). Each state has a certain number of electors, based on how many senators and representatives it has in Congress. There are 538 electors in total.
To become President, a candidate (候选人)needs to win more than half of these electors’ votes, which is 270 votes. Most states have a “winner-takes-all” rule. This means the candidate who gets the most votes in that state wins all of its electors.
Before the election, each party holds primaries to choose their candidate. People vote in these primaries to say who they want to represent their party. Then, the candidates from the two main parties, Democrats and Republicans, campaign (竞选) across the country. They tell people why they should be President.
On Election Day, people go to polling places to vote. Some states also allow early voting or mail-in voting. After all the votes are counted, we know who the electors will vote for. Then, in January, the electors meet and cast their votes for President.
The person who gets the most elector votes becomes the President. They take office on January 20th, the day after Inauguration Day (美国总统就职日), and promise to follow the Constitution. This system has been used in the US since the18th century to make sure every state’s voice is heard in choosing the President.

What are the promises of smart cities?
With the development of technology, our city life is becoming more and more “smart”. What is life like in a smart city? What kind of smart city do you dream of living in? In the following pages, Teens will introduce the idea of the smart city with detailed (详细的) information and examples. These pages cover topics like smart campuses, smart homes, smart offices, smart transportation, smart entertainment (娱乐) and more.
In the more than 6,000 years of living in cities, humans have always had to solve problems about how they live and work. These problems include water, health, transportation, crime (犯罪活动) and nature protection. Today, using cutting-edge (尖端的) technologies, smart cities cover them all. We are now in a time of being “smart”.
According to the European Commission, a smart city uses digital (数码的) methods to provide more efficient (高效的) networks and services for people and businesses. It means smarter urban (城市的) transportation, better water and waste systems, and better ways to light and heat buildings. It also means a more interactive (互动的) city administration (管理) and safer public spaces.
The idea of smart cities dates back to the 1960s and 1970s. Back then, the US Community Analysis Bureau began using digital methods to collect data and do analysis (分析). This way, cities could provide better services.
Automation (自动化) and the internet of things (IoT) are must-haves for smart cities. According to TWI, a global technology organization, a smart city works in four steps: collection, analysis, communication, and action. In this process, a set of smart sensors (传感器) will collect real-time data in the city. After analysis, the results will be communicated to the decision-makers. They will then take action to improve city life for the people.
Smart city technologies have already been used in many places. Singapore, for example, introduced a digital health system. Patients can talk to their doctors through video calls. The city also produced useful IoT tools to monitor (监测) patients in real time.
61. According to the European Commission, what is a smart city like?
A. It has fewer networks and services. B. There is no need for transportation.

C. Over 10 percent of children have problems with math.
D. Math problems mostly happen to primary school children.
48. How is the clinic doing?
A. It is welcomed by parents. B. Few people know about it.
C. People don’t trust it. D. It isn’t doing well.
49. What advice does Shi Ping give to parents?
A. Focus more on children’s mental health. B. Encourage their children to work harder.
C. Change how they teach their children. D. Children sometimes need some pressure.
50. What do the experts think about the clinic?
A. It doesn’t help much with math problems.
B. People shouldn’t expect it to solve all problems.
C. Parents and children depend too much on it.
D. Working hard on math weighs more than going to a clinic.

D. All candidates share the electors equally.

C. It’s not allowed to waste any water. D. It is more interactive in its administration.
62. When did the idea of smart cities first appear?
A. 6,000 years ago. B. Around 1970. C. In the 1980s. D. In the 1990s.
63. According to TWI, during which step will sensors be used in a smart city?
A. Collection. B. Analysis. C. Communication. D. Action.
64. Which word can take the place of the underline word “communicated”?
A. changed B. presented C. talked D. exchanged
65. What is the last paragraph mainly about?

Guarding the Blue Planet
Liu loves to teach people to explore the underwater world and lead them to feel the beauty of the sea. Now, he devotes himself to the voluntary work in a community called Better Blue. The volunteers in Better Blue are not only made up of diving coaches like Liu, but also pilots, lawyers, doctors and so on. All of them should have the knowledge of the sea.
Every year, 12 million tons of plastic waste flows into the ocean (海洋). Sea animals like turtles often lose their lives because of eating plastic or fishing nets. Even humans on land are influenced because the fish we eat may have harmful plastic particles in their bodies. So the community Better Blue was started in 2017. It hopes to raise marine (海洋的) protection awareness among the public, invite people to protect the endangered sea animals and encourage people to think about how to make the ocean develop in a friendly way.
Dive Against Debris is an activity organized by Better Blue to protect the ocean. The activity needs volunteers with greater diving skills. In this project, divers go into the waters and fish out rubbish, which is then separated into different groups. They do this at several fixed locations in the bay area of Shenzhen every month. The work also includes checking which rubbish often appears in the area, doing a research on why this kind of rubbish is the most and making suggestions to reduce the pollution.
Marine protection is not limited to collecting rubbish. It also includes marine protection education. On weekdays, Liu volunteers to teach children marine protection in local schools. Volunteers like him teach marine science to make children realize that land- based rubbish can also pollute the ocean. Researchers from local universities also take part in such activities.
With diving becoming popular, people are more willing to learn about marine protection. They come with their equipment, dive into the waters, get to know the underwater world and protect it.
