The winter wind bit through my coat but didn’t lessen my cheerfulness as I carried my four jars of home- canned tomatoes into the community center. Excited to participate in feeding the less fortunate in our community on New Year’s Day, I joined my Sunday school’s classmates as we boxed the goods for delivery.
That year, we went to Bobby’s house. He was one grade ahead of me in school, but I never knew he was poor. When we took the box inside the small house, I saw bedrooms had been created by hanging sheets over ropes. Bobby came home while we were there. Embarrassed, he quickly hid behind the screen (隔板).
It made my heart ache. Even as a seven- year- old, I understood embarrassment. After we returned to the community center, my teacher pulled me aside. I thought she was going to discuss Bobby’s situation, but she didn’t.

My teacher told me that they had collected a lot of food that year and suggested that, since I had a large family, I should take an extra box home with me. She picked up the cardboard container, expecting me to accept the food.
I refused, saying that the food was for poor people. My teacher responded that all people needed help at times. I insisted that my family didn’t need help. I opened the door and went back home.
I began to wonder if we were poor. I looked at our family carefully, concluding that we were definitely poor.

My mom never tolerates foolish behavior and doesn’t allow complaining. Two days later, she demanded to know why I’d been depressed.
I told her that we were poor. When she demanded to know who had said that, I replied that nobody had said it, but I had figured it out. I couldn’t look at her in the eye, feeling that she had been hiding this important truth from us.

Para 1:She asked why I thought we were poor, and I listed reasons.

Para 2: After I finished, my mother sat down and told me we were not poor but very rich.

She asked why I thought we were poor, and I listed reasons. In a soft voice, I started, “Our house is much smaller compared to many of my classmates'. They have special study rooms, but I can only do my homework on the dining table. Also, my clothes are all hand - me - downs from my sister, and there are even some small patches on them. My classmates always wear brand - new and beautiful clothes. Every time I go to school, I'm jealous when I see their fancy toys, but we don't have any at home.” As I spoke, my voice gradually trailed off, and my head dropped lower and lower. Tears welled up in my eyes. I felt as if I had suddenly seen all the hardships of a poor family, which I had ignored before. I was full of confusion, wondering why our family was like this.

After I finished, my mother let out a soft sigh and then pulled me to sit on the sofa. She said to me earnestly, “My dear, we're not poor; instead, we're very rich. Look, our family is healthy, and we can sit around the table every day to have meals and share our joys and sorrows. This is something that no amount of money can buy. Although our house isn't big, it's full of warmth and can protect us from the wind and rain. Your clothes may not be new, but they're clean and tidy, and each one is filled with your sister's love. As for toys, happiness isn't measured by toys. You play with your friends and explore the world together. Isn't that the most precious thing? True wealth lies in the company of family and the love we have for each other.” After hearing my mother's words, I suddenly understood, and the gloom in my heart dissipated instantly.

Prompted by her query as to why I deemed us poor, I began to enumerate my reasons, my voice barely above a whisper. “Our abode pales in comparison to those of my classmates,” I lamented. “They boast dedicated study nooks, while I'm confined to the dining table for my schoolwork. Moreover, my wardrobe consists solely of hand - me - downs from my sister, marred by the odd patch here and there. In contrast, my peers flaunt brand - new, stylish attire. Each time I set foot in school, envy gnaws at me as I behold their fancy playthings, which are conspicuously absent from our home.” As I continued, my voice faltered, my head drooping lower with each word. Tears welled in my eyes, threatening to spill over. It was as if a veil had been lifted, revealing the harsh realities of a poverty - stricken existence I had hitherto overlooked. A cloud of confusion hung heavy over me, leaving me bewildered as to why our family had to endure such circumstances.

Upon the conclusion of my monologue, my mother emitted a gentle sigh and gently guided me to the sofa. Seated beside me, she spoke with profound earnestness, “My dear child, far from being destitute, we are in fact abundantly wealthy. Consider our health - a priceless gift that allows us to gather around the table daily, sharing laughter and tears. This simple pleasure transcends the value of any material possession. Our humble dwelling, though modest in size, shelters us from the elements and overflows with warmth. Your clothes, though not fresh off the rack, are imbued with the love of your sister, making them far more precious than any designer label. And toys? True happiness is not found in the latest gadgets but in the laughter shared with friends as you embark on adventures together. True wealth, my dear, is the love that binds our family together, a treasure far more valuable than gold or jewels.” Her words were like a ray of sunshine, dispelling the darkness that had clouded my heart, leaving me with a newfound understanding of the true meaning of wealth.
