B.
Our house has always been full of plants. My mum has a green thumb. Every summer, she changes our backyard into a fruit and vegetable farm. After about two months, our dinner plates are filled with snow peas, sweet green tomatoes and spicy peppers.
My mom takes good care of our family, just like she cares for her houseplants and garden. I grew under the sunshine of her smile. I loved spending summer afternoons digging up worms (蠕虫) in the backyard with my mum. I listened to stories about her childhood in northern China. Her favorite story was about how she used to get up before the sunrise to get to school, and the tall cornstalks (玉米杆), which grew twice as tall as her on both sides of the path, would sway (摇摆) in the wind, almost as if they were afraid of her.
This November will mark 21 years since my parents left their comfortable life in China for Canada’s cold weather and difficult language. Their first year was hard. They lived in a rented (租用的) basement apartment. To support the family while taking care of me, my mum held me in her lap (大腿) and made a living by sewing (缝) wedding dresses. Compared with my mum, I’ve had an easy life.
But I don’t have a green thumb. The bean plant I brought home? Eaten by my dog. The strawberry seeds I got for Christmas? Knocked the pot over. Only my mum remembers to water the yellowing plant in my bedroom.
I’ve been thinking a lot about my character and how it was shaped by my mum’s influence. I might have never discovered a love for reading if she hadn’t read me a bedtime story every night or a love for music if she hadn’t taught me to play the piano. I have so much to learn, and so much still to do. But thanks to my mum, I’ve got solid (结实的) roots that I can draw on as I grow into my future.
16. Why does the author say “My mum has a green thumb” in the first paragraph?
A. Her mother has a green finger. B. Her mother is good at gardening.
C. Her mother likes the plants in the house. D. Her mother enjoys working in the garden.
17. What is the main idea of the paragraph 2?
A. The writer is afraid of tall cornstalks.
B. The writer’s mother’s love for gardening.
C. The writer’s childhood memories with her mother.
D. The writer’s mother’s favorite stories about school.
18. How did the writer’s mother probably support her family during their early years in Canada?
A. By planting plants B. By selling fruit and vegetables
C. By sewing wedding dresses D. By teaching her native language
19. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. The writer preferred reading to music.
B The writer has done a lot for her mother.
C. The writer’s mother forced her to play the piano.
D. The writer’s mother influenced the personality of the writer.
20. Which words can best describe the writer’s mother?
A. gentle and strict B. humorous and energetic C. caring and hardworking D. dependent and selfless
C
Thanks to the “Double Reduction” policy (双减政策), students now have less homework and are discouraged from attending after-school teaching. Museums are fast becoming a hit with families in China, as Chinese parents find they help to inspire curiosity in their children.
Lin Yu, a mother from Shenzhen, often takes her 11-year-old son to museums, such as Shenzhen Museum and Shenzhen Science Museum. “My son has more free time of his own. We often go to Shenzhen Museum. It offers a hands-on learning experience. It’s like taking a trip back in time to see how people lived, worked, and built amazing things.” Lin said.
More parents are hoping to broaden their children’s horizons through museum visits. As a result, museums in Shenzhen have seen an increase in visits. Shenzhen Museum alone received 53,000 visits during the 2024 Chinese New Year holiday, and more than 70 percent are family visits.
“For middle school students, the place is a great choice for them to learn about politics, history and geography at one time. With the new policy, I finally succeed inviting my son to the museums at the weekends. We enjoyed the exhibitions—Bronze Ware Exhibition last weekend. We are going to attend the exhibition—Pingcheng and Yungang Grottoes Art in the Northern Wei Dynasty next weekend.” said Luo, a museum lover herself, whose son is a 7th-grade student.
Because of the new policy, schools provide rich and colorful social education. This offers a good opportunity for museums to work together with education departments and schools to provide cool classes about culture and history. “Visiting science and technology museums can help develop children’s interest in science, technology, culture and so on, which is of great significance to their growth.” said Gao Yang, an assistant professor from Southern University of Science and Technology University.
See, museums aren’t just about old things from the past. They’re like magical doors that take you on exciting adventures of learning and fun with your family!
21. The underlined word “hit” in this passage means ________.
A. success B. popularity C. beat D. luck

A. To discourage them from taking part in after-school teaching.
B. To explore the cultural and historical significance of museums.
C. To enjoy hands-on learning experiences and inspire their curiosity.
D. To develop their children’s creativity and imagination through exhibitions.
23. Why are museums considered a great learning choice for middle school students?
A. They provide sports facilities. B. They offer a break from studies.
C. They are more entertaining than schools. D. They cover topics like politics, history, and geography.
24. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Curiosity Drives Museum Visits. B. No More Homework or Museums.

A. By planting plants B. By selling fruit and vegetables
C. By sewing wedding dresses D. By teaching her native language
19. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. The writer preferred reading to music.
B. The writer has done a lot for her mother.
C. The writer’s mother forced her to play the piano.
D. The writer’s mother influenced the personality of the writer.
20. Which words can best describe the writer’s mother?
