Here are some of the most beloved sports worldwide. Hockey-2 billion fans Hockey, both on ice and on a field, wins a following of two billion enthusiastic fans worldwide. Field hockey is mainly played in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia, while ice hockey is particularly popular in Canada and the US, where kids grow up playing pond hockey. Unlike ice hockey, field hockey usually does not involve body contact in the form of checking and hitting. Football-4 billion fans Football, better known as soccer in the US, is by far the most popular sport in the world. Experts estimate that the origin (起源) of football may go as far back as two thousand years, beginning in ancient China during the Han Dynasty. One major reason for football’s global popularity is that unlike other sports that require expensive equipment, all you need to play football is a ball and your feet. Volleyball-900 million fans Volleyball pits two teams across a high net each attempting to smash the ball onto the opponent’s floor. A popular variant, beach volleyball, is competed on sand by pairs rather than the regular six players per team. The crowd appeal of beach volleyball has grown greatly in recent years. Tennis-1 billion fans An estimated one billion people worldwide follow professional tennis tournaments and matches. In tennis, players on both sides of a net try to hit a ball with a racket so that it either goes past their opponent (对手) or bounces twice on their opponent’s side of the court to score points. Tennis superstars like Rafael Nadal, and Serena Williams are now household names around the world, with huge international fan bases. 1. Which sport attracts the most fans according to the text? A. Volleyball. B. Hockey. C. Football. D. Tennis. 2. What makes football popular all over the world? A. Its long history. B. Its great convenience. C. Its unique origin. D. Its huge fan bases. 3. Which statement about the four sports is true? A. Playing ice hockey involves body contact. B. Soccer is American people's favorite sport. C. Beach volleyball has attracted the most sports fans recently. D. A tennis player loses one point if his ball goes past his opponent. B In December 2004, I had just become a professional photographer and was working on a project about communities who live on the sea, known as sea nomads I was living with members of the Chao-Ley tribe (部落) on a small island in southern Thailand. We didn’t share a language and relied on body language to communicate. I went out to sea with them regularly. One morning, I was due to set out with a group of six Chao-Ley fishermen in a small boat. The sea looked different, with the water totally still. About 20 minutes after we left and a few miles out in the open sea, one of the fishermen pointed to a small white spot far in the distance. It was getting bigger and bigger very quickly. This was a tsunami (海啸) wave speeding through the ocean. Usually, the deeper the water, the weaker the wave. But we weren’t out far enough to be safe, nor close enough to shore to make it back in time. We were stuck. I began to feel really scared. The captain told the six of us where to sit, so we would balance out the boat. My camera was in my backpack. I wanted to capture the scene, but I couldn’t. Any movement would imbalance the boat. Suddenly there was a huge noise. The wave hit the boat, but in a flash the skilled captain managed to swerve (使突然转向) us up and onto the wave. Then the boat moved from the tip of the wave down into safe waters. Our eyes and mouths were wide open, and everyone let out heavy sighs. The captain had saved us all. Surviving gave me a deep understanding of how important life can be. I’ve been going back to Southeast Asia almost every year since. The photography project has become a thank-you to the people who saved my life. The picture I wanted to take on the boat remains “the one that got away” – I think every photographer has one. But mine changed my life. 4. What happened before the author set out with the fishermen? A. The captain wanted to cancel the trip. B. He noticed something unusual. C. They saw a white spot in the distance. D. It looked like it was about to rain. 5. When did the author start to feel frightened? A. When fishermen on the boat felt nervous. B. When he realized they were trapped. C. When the boat was about to be hit. D. When the boat shook violently. 6. What was the author doing when the tsunami wave hit the boat? A. Helping the captain swerve. B. Taking a photo of the wave. C. Trying not to move. D. Reaching for his backpack. 7. What did the author learn from his experience? A. We should have the courage to take risks. B. Opportunity never knocks twice. C. Life is too short to be wasted. D. Sometimes regrets in life can save us. C It’s 1: 45 a.m, and 21-year-old Thomas Murphy is studying for an important exam. To stay awake, he’s had two cups of coffee in the last three hours and is now downing a popular energy drink which also has caffeine. Caffeine is present in many of the foods and drinks we consume (消耗), but is it good for us? Charles Czeisler, a scientist and sleep expert at Harvard Medical School, believes that caffeine causes us to lose sleep. “Without enough sleep — the typical eight hours -the human body will not work at its best, physically, mentally, or emotionally.” Too often, Czeisler says, we consume caffeine to stay awake, which later makes it impossible for us to get the rest we need. A number of scientists believe that regular caffeine use causes physical dependence. Heavy caffeine users show similar behaviors. For example, they get mild to severe headaches, or they feel tired or sad when they can’t have a caffeinated drink. To reduce or stop these feelings, users must consume caffeine, which is characteristic of drug addiction. Despite these concerns, the general opinion in the scientific field is that caffeine is not dangerous when one or two small cups of coffee per day are consumed. Furthermore, a lot of current research goes against long-held negative beliefs about caffeine, and suggests that it may, in fact, have health benefits. For example, studies have shown that caffeine can help ease pain and help improve one’s mood. Research has also shown that some caffeinated drinks can help the body fight a number of illnesses, including certain types of cancer. Caffeine’s behavioral effects are real, but most often mild. Getting that burst of energy, of course, is why many of the world’s most popular drinks contain caffeine. Whether it’s a student drinking coffee before class or a businessperson enjoying tea with lunch, humankind’s favorite stimulant (兴奋剂) is at work every day, all over the world. 8. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “downing” in paragraph 1? A. Holding. B. Decreasing. C. Drinking. D. Waking. 9. Which statement would sleep expert Charles Czeisler probably agree with? A. The type of caffeine will affect people’s sleep. B. Heavy caffeine consumption will cause drug addiction. C. It’s a good idea to consume caffeine if people want to stay energetic. D. Regular caffeine use will make it difficult for people to get enough sleep. 10. What is the text mainly about? A. The risks of caffeine intake. B. The effects of consuming caffeine. C. Healthy and unhealthy caffeine products. D. Recent changes in caffeine consumption. 11. What is the author’s attitude towards caffeine consumption? A. Worried. B. Doubtful. C. Objective. D. Unconcerned. D We’re all familiar with the feeling — it usually starts with a little itch (痒) deep inside the nose. Next comes the awareness that it’s going to happen. Then, achoo! Air erupts out of our nose at an astonishing 100 miles per hour, bursting out whatever was causing the itch. The high-pressure from a sneeze (喷嚏) has led some people to think that if we didn’t close our eyes, they could pop out. For decades, countless people have tested the theory. Upon finding it almost impossible to keep their eyes open while sneezing, many have concluded that the theory must be true. If you try it yourself, the chances are that your eyes are still where they belong. That’s because they are held firmly by the muscles in the eyes. Furthermore, increased pressure from sneezing actually builds up in the blood vessels (血管), which may cause vessels to break but is less likely to cause the eyeballs to pop out. Why did this theory start anyway? Some say that it all began in 1882, when the New York Times reported an incident of a woman who burst one of her eyeballs during a sudden sneeze. Others point at the fact that different high-pressure experiences, such as childbirth, can cause blood vessels in the eyes to pop. Still others say that closing our eyes when we sneeze shows the theory is true. Scientists, on the other hand, explain that we close our eyes for the same reason we sneeze — to prevent unwanted things from entering our bodies. Either way, as far as we know, there are no actual recorded cases of anyone losing an eyeball because of a sneeze, so don’t lose any sleep over it! 12. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 1? A. The cause of a sneeze. B. The danger of sneezing. C. The importance of a sneeze. D. The experience of sneezing. 13. Why won’t eyeballs pop out while people are sneezing? A. Because they are fixed firmly in the eyes. B. Because high pressure builds up in the eyes. C. Because they are held strongly by blood vessels. D. Because increased pressure prevents them from popping out. 14. What can we infer from the text? A. Sneezes usually cause an itchy nose. B. People sneeze to burst out unwanted things. C. The high pressure caused by a sneeze will be released through breathing. D. People close their eyes when sneezing to stop their eyeballs from popping out. 15. Where is the text most likely from? A. A research paper. B. A biology textbook. C A guidebook. D. A magazine. Health and fitness help a person live a good and healthy life. It was a one and-a-half-floor house. We had to decorate it first because it was so old. I started to paint the walls and the doors outside. I also broke the broken fence (篱笆) and grew some flowers. After I finished painting the walls of the bedroom upstairs inside, I brought up some water to wash the window. I washed the inside first, then opened the window and stepped out on the kitchen roof to wash the outside. The window was the kind that you couldn’t open from the outside. I was so devoted to my housework that I didn’t realize the window gradually closed. After finishing cleaning; I tried to open the window but failed. Standing on my kitchen roof, I looked around the neighborhood. That was a lovely afternoon. Where were the neighbor’s kids riding their bikes? They used to ride back from the park. Now no young voices shouted to one another. Carroll and Julie,an old couple, lived in the house at the corner. They were likely to be at home, but our kitchen was on the wrong side of our house for me to call them. I sat down and thought about my situation. Even if someone came along, they couldn’t walk in the house and open the window. B He noticed something unusual. C. The sea looked different, with the water totally still.”(一天早晨,我正要和一群六个Chao-Ley 渔民乘坐一条小船出发。 根据第四段“Usually, the deeper the water, the weaker the wave. But we weren’t out far enough to be safe, nor close enough to shore to make it back in time. We were stuck. I began to feel really scared.”(通常,水越深,波浪就越弱。 根据倒数第二段中“The captain told the six of us where to sit, so we would balance out the boat. My camera was in my backpack. I wanted to capture the scene, but I couldn’t. Any movement would imbalance the boat. 根据最后一段“Surviving gave me a deep understanding of how important life can be. I’ve been going back to Southeast Asia almost every year since. The photography project has become a thank-you to the people who saved my life. The picture I wanted to take on the boat remains “the one that got away” – I think every photographer has one. But mine changed my life.”(生存让我深刻理解了生命的重要性。 D。 C It’s 1: 45 a.m, and 21-year-old Thomas Murphy is studying for an important exam. C 9. D 10. B 11. 根据划线词上文“To stay awake, he’s had two cups of coffee in the last three hours and is now”以及后文“a popular energy drink which also has caffeine”可知,托马斯·墨菲在过去的三个小时里喝了两杯咖啡,现在正在喝一种很受欢迎的能量饮料,其中也含有咖啡因。 根据第二段“Too often, Czeisler says, we consume caffeine to stay awake, which later makes it impossible for us to get the rest we need.(Czeisler说,我们经常摄入咖啡因来保持清醒,这使得我们无法得到所需的休息)”可知,睡眠专家Charles Czeisler可能会同意经常摄入咖啡因会使人们难以获得足够的睡眠。 根据第二段的“but is it good for us?(但这对我们有好处吗?)”和倒数第二段“ Furthermore, a lot of current research goes against long-held negative beliefs about caffeine, and suggests that it may, in fact, have health benefits. 根据第三段“A number of scientists believe that regular caffeine use causes physical dependence.(许多科学家认为,经常摄入咖啡因会导致身体依赖)”;第四段“Despite these concerns, the general opinion in the scientific field is that caffeine is not dangerous when one or two small cups of coffee per day are consumed.(尽管存在这些担忧,但科学界的普遍观点是,每天喝一到两小杯咖啡,咖啡因是没有危险的)”以及最后一段“Caffeine’s behavioral effects are real, but most often mild.(咖啡因对行为的影响是真实的,但大多数情况下是温和的)”可推知,作者主要引用了科学家等专业人士对咖啡因摄入的看法和研究,且提到了咖啡因大多数情况下是温和的,故作者对咖啡因摄入的态度是客观的。故选C。 D We’re all familiar with the feeling — it usually starts with a little itch (痒) deep inside the nose. Why did this theory start, anyway? C Because they are held strongly by blood vessels. C. A guidebook. D. A magazine. D 13. A 14. B 15. 根据第一段“We’re all familiar with the feeling — it usually starts with a little itch (痒) deep inside the nose. 根据第二段中“That’s because they are held firmly by the muscles in the eyes. 故选A项。 根据最后一段中“Scientists, on the other hand, explain that we close our eyes for the same reason we sneeze — to prevent unwanted things from entering our bodies. 通读全文可知,结合最后一段中“Either way, as far as we know, there are no actual recorded cases of anyone losing an eyeball because of a sneeze, so don’t lose any sleep over it!(不管怎样,据我们所知,没有人因为打喷嚏而失去眼球的实际记录,所以不要为此而失眠!)” Health and fitness help a person live a good and healthy life. I am delighted to hear that you are planning an outdoor activity. Here are my suggestions for the event. I strongly recommend a “Nature Immersion Day”, which will provide us with an opportunity to immerse ourselves in the beauty of nature while practicing English in a real-world context. We can start with a guided nature walk in a nature reserve, observing and discussing the flora and fauna. Following the walk, team-building games such as treasure hunts or relay races are a good idea. After lunch, we can gather for a brief discussion on the importance of protecting our environment. The doors were locked by my husband before he went to work. “When you’re working on an indoor project, anyone could open the door and come in. So just keep the doors closed.” he said. I sat there, thinking how stupid I was and what I should do. Then I heard there was a child laughing nearby. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The boy went to ask for help. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Then I heard there was a child laughing nearby. I stood up and looked down the street. Sure enough, there was a little boy. He was riding his bike. I told him that I was washing the window and it shut. He looked up, saw me, and laughed. After all, it’s not an everyday case that you see an old lady on a roof. I told him to ask my next-door neighbors to come and help me. “Of course,” he simply answered. The boy went to ask for help. Soon Carroll and Julie came, bringing a long rope with them. And then I climbed down. I sincerely thanked them for their kind help. The doors were locked and the keys were in the house, so my lovely neighbors invited me to their house to celebrate my rescue with coffee, cookies, and laughter. A few hours later, my husband came back. I said thanks to them again and went home. From then on, I definitely believe that a far-off relative is not as helpful as a near neighbor. 帮忙:help/give a hand/do a favour for ②.返回:come back /return 情绪类 ①.感谢:thank sb. for/show one’s appreciation/show one’s gratitude/be grateful ②.开怀大笑:laughter/roar with laughter/a broad smile 【点睛】 [高分句型1].
