66.Dear boys and girls,
As we gathered for our class meeting themed “Read Good Books, Foster Growth,” it became evident that reading enriches our minds and souls in countless ways. Books broaden our horizons, spark creativity, and enhance our understanding of the world.
To inspire you, I warmly recommend “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. This timeless classic not only offers a profound insight into racial injustice but also teaches us about moral courage and the importance of empathy.
Let’s embark on this reading journey together, for knowledge and growth await us in every page we turn.
67.范文
The moment Ava walked in, her parents greeted her with a smile. She knew she had to tell them about the lost phone, but words stuck in her throat. Recalling the trust they had put in her with the phone, Ava felt a pang of distress as she prepared to confess. “I…I’ve lost my phone.” she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. Her father’s brow furrowed. “Did it perhaps fall from your pocket during the movie? Or could it have…?” Her mother inquired anxiously. When Ava admitted that, in her panic, she had forgotten to go back and search properly or ask for help, her parents exchanged a silent glance. “Accidents happen.” Her father assured her. “We’ll figure this out together.”
Then her parents drove her back to the cinema. They went to the reception desk and asked the cinema staff for help. It turned out that someone had turned the phone in to the front desk. They took the phone back. With a voice choked by emotion, Ava apologized to her father, “I know I messed up, Dad.” Placing a hand on her shoulder, her father told Ava that maturity wasn’t just about having a phone or not, but about how she handled situations, especially when they went wrong. “It comes along with a sense of responsibility. Remember to be responsible for your phone!” Her mother added, putting the phone back into Ava’s hand. As she held the device, she felt the familiar weight, a weight more significant than before.

One of the improv (即兴表演) classes I attended regularly was taught by Jim Cranna every Saturday afternoon. Sometimes, as many as twenty-five to sixty-plus folks showed up. Jim made sure to fit everyone in so they could improve their skills. The class lasted for three hours. The usual cast of comic actors played improv comedy games. And we would go to the nearest mini market and get a snack or coffee during breaks.
One day, three of us were standing outside the building, when Robin Williams — an internationally famous actor and comic walked by, enjoying the fresh bay air. Completely frozen, my fellow comics couldn’t summon up the courage to just say “hi” to Robin, who was with a friend. I froze for a moment, but then I composed myself.
I told them, “Hey, if you guys can’t handle it, then I will ask him to come and join us for the second half of class.” I could hear them mumble under their breath, “Yeah, sure, right. You’re going to ask Robin Williams to come to our comedy class. Good luck with that one!”
So I went up to Robin and his friend and asked him to join us. “We’re having an improv comedy class. We’re on break now, but we would be most humbled and honored if you would join us for the second half of the class.” Robin looked directly in my eyes and said with little hesitation, “Okay.” It was like a grown-up child being asked to come and play. With that, he and his friend followed me up to the class.
When he saw Robin, Jim said, “Oh my goodness, look who Micheline is bringing to class.” Jim’s eyes were all in astonishment and delight. “Why, it’s Robin Williams!” Robin and his friend stayed the rest of the class and at the end of the class, Robin and Jim performed a skit We actually watched him shape-shift as he prepared physically and mentally for his made-up character. He gave it his all. It was truly magical.
What a delight for all of us that Saturday afternoon! All I know is that if I hadn’t mustered up the courage to ask Robin to join us, none of us would have had that experience.
24.What does the underlined word “compose” mean in paragraph 2?
A.Look down. B.Calm down. C.Make up. D.Pick up.

A.It’s never too late to mend. B.Every cloud has a silver lining.
C.A brave attempt is half success. D.Actions speak louder than words.
26.What can be inferred from the text?
A.It was the author’s bravery that moved Robin Williams.
B.Jim Cranna was waiting for Robin Williams to come to the class.
C.Robin Williams gave a lecture on playing improv comedy games.
D.Micheline’s friends didn’t have the nerve to invite Robin Williams.
27.What kind of person was Robin Williams most likely to be?
A.Renowned but approachable. B.Popular but humble.
C.Respected but casual. D.Strict but generous.

Speed reading has its benefits—it saves time where there is a lack of available hours or days, and the volume of pages is shocking. The problem generated by speed reading, though, can be summarized with the following quote from the witty (诙谐的) director Woody Allen: “This is how I read War and Peace. It was about Russia.” A remarkable summary for a 1200-page book.
I prefer discussing the “way of reading” and not only the speed. Does a slow pace guarantee quality of reading? You can do a very short exercise—which books have you read, let’s say, two years ago? What were they about? Can you recall five ideas from each of them? In most cases, the answer is “No”. So, what difference does it make if we read fast or slow?
In today’s busy times, I suggest “Mindful Reading”, which includes two simple principles. The first is, of course, being mindful. The speed of reading is precisely matched to the speed of awareness. I read to realise. I realise to comprehend. I comprehend to make use of. It obliges (迫使) me to slow down when I don’t grasp the idea behind the words and to go back over and over to one and the same sentence. And thus, poetry requires a slow pace, time for an internal “echo” of rhyme in the soul for appreciating the beauty of the words while the novel allows for a higher speed in order for us to enjoy the plot. But all types of speed have one thing in common: mindfulness.
And the other principle: Post Lectio—Ratiocination. If we read for 60 minutes, and after closing the book, immediately go and do something else, we are missing a key element—thinking over the content while we still remember it, something like a mental digestion. Whoever is not used to this can try at least59/1 compared to 60/0: one minute to think and assimilate. Better, try five, or even better, ten minutes, or why not 30/30 minutes? With this mental exercise, we will not only remember ideas from books read, but we will gain a much bigger benefit from their content.
I hope you did not read this article too fast.
28.Why is Woody Allen quoted in paragraph 1?
A.To show the efficiency of reading fast.
B.To illustrate the problem of speed reading.
C.To prove the director’s ability to summarize.
D.To stress the importance of reading classics.
29.What may the writer agree with about the speed of reading?
A.Fast reading ensures reading quality.
B.Fast reading is superior to slow reading.
C.Slow reading is no guarantee of reading quality.
D.Slow reading prevents us remembering the content.
30.What does the first principle of “Mindful Reading” involve?
A.Deep engagement. B.Quick comprehension.
C.Excellent memory. D.Wild imagination.
31.What does the author suggest readers do according to paragraph 4?
A.Take breaks to refresh their mind. B.Read mindfully without interruptions.
C.Devote time to reflecting after reading. D.Digest information while reading.

Apple announced four new iPhone 16 models during a launch event September 9 from its headquarters in Cupertino, California. It said the new models are equipped with special chips to support the increased power needed for AI operations.
Apple says the AI built into the devices is part of its newly developed Apple Intelligence technology. The company describes the technology as a “personal intelligence system” designed to help users “communicate, work, and express” themselves.
The new AI tools, or features, are designed to improve on past ones, including the company’s 13-year-old Siri digital assistant. Company officials say they aim to get Siri to better understand requests and actions of the user.
One new feature of iPhone 16 models lets users search for pictures in their images collection by describing what an image looks like. AI tools can also help users create personal emojis and can organize and provide brief descriptions of emails. Other AI features include improved camera and video production functions. The new iPhone models are also equipped with a new button that reacts to clicks and hand movements to make it easier and faster to set up shots, capture images and start video recording.
Apple’s push to include AI tools in its new devices is partly seen as a reaction to moves by competitors like Samsung and Google. Both of those companies have already offered users powerful new AI tools in their latest smartphone models. In addition to the new AI features offered, Apple has also teamed up with ChatGPT developer OpenAI to give users the chance to use that company’s technology for more complex operations. In June, Apple announced it was working with OpenAI to create a series of AI tools for iPhones and other personal devices.
Besides announcing the new AI-equipped devices, Apple also introduced new models of its Apple Watch and AirPods headphones.
The Apple Watch Series 10 has a larger and brighter display that aims to improve views from any position. The changes to Apple Watch also include additional health features, such as a sleep monitor tool that aims to identify the disorder sleep apnea
32.Why do the new models have special chips?
A.To enhance iPhone’s market competitiveness.
B.To ensure the speed of mobile Internet access.
C.To make it easier to take pictures with iPhones.
D.To support the higher power required for AI operations.
33.What is a new feature of iPhone 16 models?
A.Siri digital assistant is replaced.
B.A new button is added to create emojis.
C.AI tools help organize users’ emails by date.
D.Users can find pictures through descriptions.
34.What can we say about Apple’s new devices?
A.They’re more complex than Google’s.
B.They’re unsuccessful compared to Samsung.
C.They’re very competitive cooperating with OpenAI.
D.They’re gradually being replaced by other companies’ products.
35.What might the author continue talking about?
A.The price of Apple 16. B.The changes of AirPods headphones.
C.The advantages of AI tools. D.The reason for the disorder sleep apnea.

How Loneliness Is Killing Us
Loneliness is absolutely an epidemic (流行病) in our society, but it’s been growing for decades. Loneliness is the sense that “I am less connected to other people than I want to be.” 36 And that makes it different from isolation (独处). I can deliberately isolate myself and feel great about that, but only you can tell if you’re lonely.
37 In some studies, as many as, 60% of people will say that they feel lonely much of the time. Young adults aged 16 to 24 are the loneliest age group.
There are many factors that are responsible for that. Loneliness was on the rise from the 1950s in part because of the rise of private cars. We’ve become a much more mobile society where the networks of family and friends get loose as people move for jobs and other kinds of opportunities like education.
38 But then it tears us away from the communities we are born into and spend much of our lives creating. When television came into the American home, there was more of a decline in investing in our communities. And that was made worse as the digital revolution gave us more and more screens to look at.
Research finds loneliness is dangerous to our health. 39 In addition, people who are lonely in late life have more rapid brain decline.
The choice we can make to keep us on a good path of wellbeing is to invest in our relationships with other people. 40 .You belong. You matter. You’re connected.
A.It’s a very subjective experience.
B.All of that is good on the one hand.
C.You may feel lost and may have low confidence.
D.Stress coming from loneliness causes physical breakdown.
E.Since the 1950s, people have been less and less invested in other people.
F.People go to faraway colleges and only get in touch with families on screen.
G.A good way is to find an activity around other people where you are comfortable.

Ava, a fifth-grader, longed for a cell phone like her peers but had to wait until she was thirteen. To persuade her parents, she penned an essay, demonstrating she was mature enough for a cell phone. Her parents, impressed, gave her an old phone.
“Ava,” her dad said seriously, “a cell phone isn’t just for fun and games. It’s a significant responsibility. You must keep your phone secure. You must silence it in public spaces. You must...” He listed all of the ways that she had to be responsible with her phone. But Ava, too busy with choosing the perfect wallpaper, downloading apps, and chatting with her best friend Sarah, only half-listened.
Over the weekend, Sarah’s mom took the girls to a movie. Normally Ava avoided horror films, but Sarah’s pleading words with funny memes (表情包) had somehow convinced Ava that the movie might actually be enjoyable. Before the movie started, Sarah’s mom instructed the girls to silence their phones out of respect for others. As the movie’s tension built, Ava found herself growing increasingly uncomfortable. “I need to go to the bathroom,” Ava whispered to Sarah.
After the movie, while waiting for Sarah’s mom to fetch the car, Ava felt a sinking feeling. “I can’t find my phone!” she shrieked, patting down all of her pockets. Panic-stricken, Ava searched her bag, yet her phone seemed to have vanished. Ava got into the car, her stomach in knots.
“Are you going to tell your parents?” Sarah whispered to Ava on their ride back. Ava was silent, her mind racing with the consequences. She could envision her parents’ disappointed faces and harsh words. She feared that this incident might lead to her parents taking away the privilege of having a phone altogether.
As they arrived, Ava climbed out of the car and trudged home, her heart heavy with what had happened.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150 个左右;

C.Make up. D.Pick up.
25.What did the author want to show by telling the experience?
【答案】24.B 25.C 26.D 27.A
根据划线词上文“I froze for a moment(我愣了一会儿)”以及下文“I told them, “Hey, if you guys can’t handle it, then I will ask him to come and join us for the second half of class.”(我告诉他们,“嘿,如果你们搞不定,那我就叫他来和我们一起上下半节课。”)”
根据第三段“I told them, “Hey, if you guys can’t handle it, then I will ask him to come and join us for the second half of class.” I could hear them mumble under their breath, “Yeah, sure, right. You’re going to ask Robin Williams to come to our comedy class. Good luck with that one!”(我对他们说:“嘿,如果你们搞不定的话,那我就请他来和我们一起上下半节课。”我能听到他们低声嘟囔着:“是啊,当然,没错。你要邀请罗宾·威廉姆斯来上我们的喜剧课。祝你好运!)”以及后文可知,作者和同学们偶遇著名喜剧演员却都不敢上前打招呼,最后作者鼓起勇气开口打招呼,并邀请这名喜剧演员为他们上戏剧课。结果该喜剧演员不仅毫不犹豫地同意了作者的请求,还给他们展示了精彩的表演。结合最后一段“What a delight for all of us that Saturday afternoon! All I know is that if I hadn’t mustered up the courage to ask Robin to join us, none of us would have had that experience.(那个星期六下午我们大家都很高兴!我只知道,如果我没有鼓起勇气邀请罗宾加入我们,我们都不会有这样的经历)”推知,文章想告诉我们的是敢于迈出尝试的一步,就有可能成功,即勇敢的尝试是成功的一半。故选C项。
26.推理判断题。根据第二段“Completely frozen, my fellow comics couldn’t summon up the courage to just say “hi” to Robin, who was with a friend.(我的喜剧演员同伴们完全愣住了,没能鼓起勇气向罗宾打招呼,罗宾身边还有一个朋友)”和第三段的“I told them, “Hey, if you guys can’t handle it, then I will ask him to come and join us for the second half of class.”(我告诉他们,“嘿,如果你们搞不定,那我就叫他来和我们一起上下半节课。”)”
根据第二段“One day, three of us were standing outside the building, when Robin William — an internationally famous actor and comic walked by, enjoying the fresh bay air.(有一天,我们三个人站在大楼外面,国际著名演员兼喜剧演员罗宾·威廉斯走过,享受着海湾的新鲜空气)”提到,罗宾·威廉斯很有名望;再根据第四段“Robin looked directly in my eyes and said with little hesitation, “Okay.”(罗宾直视着我的眼睛,毫不犹豫地说:“好的”) ”可知,作者邀请罗宾·威廉斯为他们上课的时候,他毫不犹豫地答应了,由此可知,罗宾·威廉斯是个平易近人的人。故选A项。

【答案】28.B 29.C 30.A 31.C
根据第一段的“The problem generated by speed reading, though, can be summarized with the following quote from the witty (诙谐的) director Woody Allen: “This is how I read War and Peace. It was about Russia.” A remarkable summary for a 1200-page book. (然而,快速阅读带来的问题可以用机智的导演伍迪·艾伦的话来概括:“这是我阅读《战争与和平》的方式。这是关于俄罗斯的。”对于一本1200页的书来说,这是一个非凡的总结。)”可知,快速阅读产生的问题,可以引用诙谐的导演伍迪·艾伦的话来概括,对于一本1200页的书来说,这是一个了不起的总结。可推断引用伍迪艾伦的话是为了说明快速阅读的问题。故选B。
29.细节理解题。根据第二段“Does a slow pace guarantee quality of reading? You can do a very short exercise—which books have you read, let’s say, two years ago? What were they about? Can you recall five ideas from each of them? In most cases, the answer is “No”. So, what difference does it make if we read fast or slow?”(慢节奏能保证阅读的质量吗?
根据第三段的“The speed of reading is precisely matched to the speed of awareness. I read to realise. I realise to comprehend. I comprehend to make use of. It obliges (迫使) me to slow down when I don’t grasp the idea behind the words and to go back over and over to one and the same sentence. (阅读的速度与意识的速度精确匹配。我读书是为了意识到。我意识到要理解。我理解了才能利用。当我无法理解文字背后的意思时,我不得不放慢脚步,一遍又一遍地回到同一个句子。) ”,可知,“正念阅读”的第一个原则是深入参与。故选A。
根据第四段的“If we read for 60 minutes, and after closing the book, immediately go and do something else, we are missing a key element—thinking over the content while we still remember it, something like a mental digestion. (如果我们读了60分钟,然后合上书,马上去做别的事情,我们就错过了一个关键因素——在我们还记得的时候思考内容,就像精神消化一样。不习惯这一点的人可以尝试至少59/1,而不是60/0:1分钟思考和吸收。最好是五分钟,或者更好,十分钟,或者为什么不30/30分钟?通过这种思维练习,我们不仅能记住读过的书中的观点,还能从书的内容中获得更大的好处。)”可推断,作者建议读者阅读后思考。故选C。

The Beijing Central Axis (轴)(BCA), established in the 13th century, 56 (run) north-south through the heart of the city. Over time, it has evolved into the world’s longest traditional imperial city axis, stretching 7.8 kilometers.

56.runs 57.described 58.civilization/civilisation 59.as 60.a 61.its 62.which 63.enhancing 64.to preserve 65.better
故填civilization/civilisation。
be praised as...
故填a。
此处应为形容词性物主代词修饰World Heritage status application,指代the BCA,故填its。
故填which。
短语attract sb. to do sth. 故填to preserve。

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150 个左右;
The moment Ava walked in, her parents greeted her with a smile. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then her parents drove Ava back to the cinema. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
①告知:tell/inform
②承认:admit/acknowledge
③拿回:take...back/get...back
