“When I was young, I told my mother that I would go to China to learn kung fu one day. She didn’t believe it at the time. As soon as I got there, I called her and said, ‘Mom, guess where I am. I’m at the Shaolin Temple!’,” says Max Yollando, a young man from Cote d’Ivoire, a country in West Africa, sharing his deep love for Chinese culture.
When Yollando was a university student, he went to the Confucius Institute (孔子学院) in his country to study Chinese. In late 2016, he had the chance to visit the temple in Henan Province on a three-month exchange. This experience brought him closer to traditional Chinese culture.
After returning to Cote d’Ivoire, Yollando continued to practice Chinese and study traditional Chinese culture. In July 2017, he returned to the Shaolin Temple again and stayed there for six years. His years at the temple reading, practicing kung fu, and meditation (打坐) greatly changed him, and allowed him to better understand traditional Chinese culture.
At the end of 2022, when he completed his studies at the temple, he began working at a Shaolin cultural center in Zambia. The first of its kind in Africa, the center is home to 30 orphans (孤儿), who are taught Chinese language and traditional Chinese culture, including kung fu, as part of the course.
For Yollando, the purpose of studying Chinese culture is to introduce Chinese values to people in his country. “In China, people make an effort to work better, and they are very respectful and thankful to their family and country. That’s what I love the most about the culture. When I make connections between Chinese and African culture, it seems to me that they have a lot in common,” he says.

They say there are three ways to experience the Grand Canyon (大峡谷): on foot, on mules (骡子) or by air. We chose the first. Up early, my husband and I and our three children couldn’t wait to get started. We decided to walk along a lovely path (小路) named Bright Angel Trail.
As we set out, I was shocked at how narrow the path was. And I couldn’t help noticing that the other tourists weren’t like us. They had heavy backpacks, water bottles, and hats, but as usual we were dressed. As the sun rose higher, Arizona’s famous heat seemed to roast us. The sun was shining brightly above our heads, and our legs were aching. We decided to go back, with the girl on my back and the boys far behind. By the time we finally got back, our legs were like jelly.
The next day, after we’d had a long rest and a good breakfast, we were ready for another view of the Canyon—by air. After our last walk, this would be the easiest thing in the world.
We called to each other excitedly as the plane circled around the Canyon. But the smiles on our faces disappeared as the pilot tossed (翻转) the plane around. It felt like the plane was going to hit the ground. I shouted, “STOP, TAKE US BACK!” When we finally arrived back on land, once again our legs were like jelly. We hardly spoke as we drove back.
As I said, there are three ways to view the Grand Canyon. We never tried the mules, but personally I’d suggest a fourth: buy yourself a good magazine about geography. That way, you can see the Canyon, without fear or tiredness.
8. What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A. The children were more excited than their parents.
B. The heat didn’t stop them from finishing the walk.
C. The family made a careful preparation before the trip.
D. Bright Angel Trail was not as lovely as they expected.
9. The underlined word “this” in paragraph 3 refers to “_________”.
A. having a long rest B. walking through the Canyon
C. buying a good magazine D. experiencing the Canyon by plane
10. Why did the family hardly speak as they drove back?
A. They were still in fear after the flight.
B. They were enjoying the beauty of the Canyon.
C. They were afraid that they would lose the way.
D. They were thinking about the next trip on mules.
11. What does the writer think of her experiences in the Grand Canyon?
A. Boring. B. Terrible. C. Pleasant. D. Meaningful.
【答案】8. D 9. D 10. A 11. B

Many kids say they don’t like the taste of broccoli. Now scientists think that there could be a good reason for those so-called “picky” eating habits of kids that drive mothers crazy.
When chemicals in broccoli mix with some people’s saliva (唾液), they give out awful smells in the mouth. The study found that the more awful smells a child’s mouth produces, the more they dislike the food.
But why do some people’s mouths make more of these smells than other people’s mouths? The team collected saliva samples (样本) from 98 pairs of parents and children. Every person’s saliva has a microbiome (菌群) in it. The researchers believe this decides how strong the smell is when a person eats broccoli. Maybe our picky eaters are simply those who have the microbiome that increases awful smells.
The team studied the samples of the adults’ and children’s saliva with broccoli. They found that people who were relatives produced almost the same amount (总量) of the smelly chemicals. Though parents and their children seemed to produce similar levels, the parents didn’t mind the taste of broccoli as much as their kids did. The adults may have gotten used to it over time.
Experts believe picky eaters may come to enjoy the food they avoid if they try it enough times. Say your child hates broccoli—if you offer them broccoli enough times, in different forms, they may come to enjoy it in the end. What’s more, children learn by observation. If they see you eating a balanced mix of healthy foods, they’ll be more likely to follow. However, watching you having lots of cola, snack foods, and dessert will make them wonder why they can’t do the same.
12. What probably makes kids dislike broccoli according to the passage?
A. Unusual shapes of broccoli. B. Unpleasant smells in mouths.
C. Unhealthy ways of cooking. D. Uncomfortable eating environment.
13. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Kids may accept broccoli by trying it enough times.
B. Only picky eaters have a microbiome in their saliva.
C. The microbiome in adults’ mouths will reduce awful smells.
D. Relatives produce different amounts of the smelly chemicals.
14. What does the underlined word “observation” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Watching others. B. Playing games.
C. Asking questions. D. Taking notes.
15. In which part of the magazine can we read the passage?
A. History. B. Science. C. Culture. D. Business.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. A 15. B

Express Your Thanks
You probably say “thank you” often—such as when a friend holds the door, or a grandparent sends a gift for your birthday. Showing thanks not only makes others feel good, but also helps you feel more joyful and less sad or stressed, according to experts at Harvard University. It is also something you can practice. Here’s how.
___16___
Take a few minutes to find out what you’re thankful for. Is it someone or something that makes you happy or makes you laugh? Is it someone you know—like a parent or teacher—who helps you? Is it something that makes your life better? Maybe it’s an activity or a hobby you enjoy. It can also be something you have that you realize others may not have.
___17___
Try to write the things you’re thankful for on sticky notes every day. Make a “thanks wall” in your room so that you can read them often. Whenever you feel upset, you can take them out to remind yourself of what makes you feel happy and thankful. Let being thankful become a part of your life.
___18___
Giving your time to others helps them—but it can also benefit you, too. For example, if you clean the yard for an elderly neighbor, you can take a moment to feel thankful that you are able to make their day easier. If you help a classmate with homework, you can feel good about sharing your knowledge.
___19___
Thanksgiving is a perfect time to exchange thanks with family. At the dinner table, each person can take a turn to share at least one thing they feel thankful for, for example, to give thanks for the company of the people in your life or the natural beauty of the outdoors.
A. Make it a habit
B. Do a “thanks search”
C. Volunteer your time
D. Start with a greeting

A. Boring. B. Terrible. C. Pleasant. D. Meaningful.

A Kids may accept broccoli by trying it enough times.
A. History. B. Science. C. Culture. D. Business.

E. Share thanks with family
Who or what do you want to say thanks to? How do you express your thanks? (不超过20词)
