Many people may throw away the nuts (核) after eating fruits, but artists of nut carving (核雕) have instead collected them and turned them into artworks.
“One nut, from 0.8 to 6 centimeters, can be made into beautiful earrings and other artworks,” said Tan Wanhai, the top artist of Weifang nut carving.
The history of nut carving might start from the Qing Dynasty (1636-1912). During that time, Wang Dayan, the best artist in the Palace Museum, spread the skill to the local people in Shandong province. Because of the difficult carving skills required and its rich artistic meanings, Weifang nut carving was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2008.
“It’s ▲ to bring this kind of traditional art to life,” said Tan, the 48-year-old artist. “Every nut looks different before being carved,” Tan added. Artists have to study each nut to carefully plan out their artwork. Besides, according to Tan, they have to learn about some skills in painting and handwriting art from many traditional cultures. “In order to show folk stories from ancient times, I need to read many books to enrich myself. ”
“Artists in the past have been wise enough to turn common things into objects of beauty. In recent years, thanks to the creative ideas of artists in Weifang, nut carving artworks have been increasingly welcomed by people in China,” Tan said. “This popularity, in turn, has also attracted many young people to learn the traditional skills of nut carving, create new skills and even help to pass down the skills to future artists.”
48. From the passage we can learn that a nut carving artwork is ________.
A. usually made of a fruit nut B. over 8 centimeters long
C. a form of modern art D. an invention by Wang Dayan
49. Which of the following can be put in the ▲ ?

The American writer Ernest Hemingway, a Nobel Prize winner in 1954, once wrote, “The world is a fine place and worth fighting for and I hate very much to leave it.”
This saying shows the way Hemingway lived his life. He took part in some of the most important events of the 20th century: World War I, the Spanish War, the Normandy Landings of 1944 and the War in Europe in the following year. Throughout his adventures (冒险经历), Hemingway met many famous writers and artists, drawing experience and knowledge from them while also developing his own literary (文学的) ideas.
Hemingway’s writing style was influenced by his life seeing. He usually used as simple words and sentence patterns as possible to tell a complete and touching story. He also invented “iceberg theory” (冰山理论) to describe his writing. This refers to the idea that hiding deeper meaning under the common surface of one’s writing can make it more meaningful, just like how most of an iceberg is hidden under the surface of the ocean.
For example, Hemingway was once asked to write a complete story in 10 words or less. He replied with “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” In this one simple sentence, he tells the complete story of the loss of a child and the parents’ sadness. It is a perfect example of Hemingway’s inspiring and simple writing style.
This year is Hemingway’s 124th birthday. Even over 60 years after his death, his writing continues to influence writers and readers today.
52. From the passage, Ernest Hemingway might have travelled to ________.
A. China B. India C. France D. Japan
53. The writer explains Hemingway’s “iceberg theory ” by ________.
A. telling a story B. raising a question C. giving an example D. listing numbers
54. “________” is most probably in Ernest Hemingway’s writing style.
A. To eat, or not to eat, that is the question. B. —Who is she? —Grandpa, that’s grandma.
C. I have a dream that one day there is no illness. D. On the beach, near the tree, beside the sea.
55 Which of the following may be the best title for the passage?
A. The Surprising Birth of Iceberg Theory B. Man of Simple Words, Many Adventures
C. Ernest Hemingway’s Love for the World D. The Influence of Life Experiences on Writing
E
As the weather gets warmer, there are few things that are better to do than travel. But travelling might not be that fun for everyone, especially for those who have motion sickness (晕动症).
Motion sickness is also called travel sickness. It is a common experience for many people. Depending on how you travel, it can be called carsickness or seasickness. People with motion sickness feel very uncomfortable while they are in motion. They feel sick and dizzy (眩晕的), like the room around them won’t stop circling. You may get the feeling when you try to read a book in a car or on a boat.
According to Scientific American, motion sickness is the result of confusion of the senses. When we move, these senses work well. However, when we sit in a car, our eyes send the message that we are not moving. But the liquid in our inner ears gives us the moving message. Naturally, our senses are all out of balance, our brains are mixed up and we start to feel ill.
But why don’t some people get motion sickness? Scientists are still working on it, but they think genes (基因) may play a part. This may be because they have certain genes that prevent mismatching senses, Bethann Hromatka, a genetics expert from the US, told The Atlantic.
Although there are many ways to deal with motion sickness scientists believe that the key is to simply try and get used to it. For example, astronauts train hard to fight motion sickness before going into space. After a couple of weeks’ training, the astronauts become used to it and don’t feel uncomfortable anymore, Sam Puma, a NASA flight doctor.
Also, here is some advice to prevent motion sickness in life. Before the travel, you are advised to book an aisle (过道) seat on a plane, train and sit in the front of a car while travelling. Besides, you should avoid standing. Always face the same way you’re travelling and leave your books at home. If you feel sick, close your eyes. Open a window to get more fresh air if possible.
56. According to the passage, travelling might not be that fun especially for the ones ________.
A. without a book to read B. with motion sickness
C. without enough sleep D. with a heart problem
57. The underlined word “confusion” in Paragraph 3 can be put in sentence ________.
A. There is some ________ about what the right answer should be.
B. I managed to clear the ________ in front of my house and parked my car there.
C. To avoid ________, I got to the office 20 minutes earlier.
D. Sometimes, it’s healthy to eat ________ to reduce pressure.
58. Which of the following pictures shows how people get motion sickness?
A. B.
C. D.
59. According to the passage, complete the mind map.
