Adaptation and innovation (创新) of traditional opera is an important trend in Chinese opera circle in recent years. In order to attract young audience of new generation and catch up with the time, traditional opera circle makes efforts to create new works. In recent years, traditional opera has come across the change of time and society. It gradually lost the main elderly audience and was not attractive for the young.
In order to find new opportunities, using modern sound, light and digital stage effects, China’s traditional Peking Opera, also known as jingju, is appealing to young people in a fashionable and innovative way, as the classic art faces an aging audience.
The centuries-old Tianleyuan Theater in Beijing has introduced fashionable performances of Peking Opera. The opera combines instrumental music, vocal performance, mime (哑剧表演), dance and acrobatics (杂技).
Tianleyuan has a jingju art experience section and fashionable performances. It has attracted more than 2,000 audience members, mostly young people, according to theater staff.
“Good art should keep pace with the times, so does jingju,” said Zhang Zishang, a 22-year-old performer of The Drunken Beauty, one of the classic jingju plays performed in the theater. “I feel today’s performance is very special,” Zhang added. She was born into a family of jingju performers and has had 10 years of stage experience. “Innovation is good, but we must also carry on the basic elements of jingju,” another young performer Deng said.
According to Deng innovation is perhaps the best way for jingju to deal with the problem of an aging audience. It has made successful attempts to combine jingju with local opera forms such as ballet when organizing performances abroad. “Innovation can help traditional arts go further. We are happy to see many young faces, and some of them even come twice to experience the ‘new’ art,” she added.

3. What’s Deng’s attitude to the innovation of jingju?
A. Worthless. B. Objective. C. Favourable. D. Indifferent.
4. Which one can be a suitable title for the text?

Rescue workers had collected 820 birds from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, the majority of them already dead. The current spill promises to be the largest in US history, and as cleanup efforts stretch across the summer, it’s clear that more oiled birds will be found, stuck and suffering in the black stick liquid. And as they do with every oil spill, rescue workers will go to great lengths to capture and clean the survivors hoping to restore them to their natural habitat.
Is it worth the effort? Some scientists aren’t so sure. Because the stress of being captured and bathed is as significant as the horror of being immersed in oil, and because research suggests that many rescued birds die shortly after being released, some experts say euthanasia (安乐死) is a more humane option.
Clean bird feathers repel water (防水) and regulate body temperature while dirty ones don’t. Oil in particular makes feathers heavier and decreases their ability to trap air, which in turn makes birds weak and become easier to drowning, overheating and organ damage. Of course, being captured and cleaned is no picnic either. Some birds wind up returning to their destroyed habitats only to fall victim to the oil again. And those who manage to avoid a second oil bath suffer dramatically shortened life spans (跨度) and lower reproductive success. Of the thousands of birds that were rescued from the Prestige oil spill off the coast of Spain in 2002, only 600 were released into the wild; most of the rest died after just a few days in captivity.
However, bird rescuers say they have learned a lot about how to best help oil-soaked birds, and that therefore, survival rates stand to increase this time around. In the past, birds were cleaned right away, and volunteers often worked through the night bathing rescued birds. But now, captured birds are left to rest for a day or two before being cleaned, and only washed during the day, so as not to disrupt their circadian (生理的) rhythms. But part of that increase may be due to greater selectivity on the part of rescuers. The workers do blood tests right in the field now and birds that are loaded with hydrocarbons (碳氢化合物) or don’t look like they’re going to make it are put down right away, rather than subjected to the stress of captivity and cleaning.
And so far, while release rates may be improving, there is little evidence of better medium or long-term survival, especially for the more-difficult-to-save species. There still aren’t good protocols (协议) for repairing the internal organ damage. Anyway, rescue efforts will continue in large part because the public demands that. Euthanasia is a difficult thing to do, especially for people who have built their lives around saving animals.
5. Why do some scientists doubt the effort to rescue oiled birds?
A. Because it has cost too much time and money.
B. Because human may be infected with the bird virus.
C. Because it is torture followed by death to birds.
D. Because migrant birds may broaden the pollution.
6. The case of Spain coast spill is mentioned to indicate ________.
A. thousands of birds were polluted by oil
B. the survival rate of oiled birds was very low
C. the efforts to rescue oiled birds were ineffective
D. captivity is an impractical method to rescue binds
7. Why do the survival rates of oiled birds increase?
A. Oiled birds are kept in warm water for one or two days
B. The second cleaning of the oiled birds in daytime is not permitted
C. The rescuers often select the birds that are likely to survive
D. Hydrocarbons are removed to rescue the oiled birds
8. Why does oiled birds’ rescue remain a controversial problem?
A. Oiled birds’ internal organ damage is permanent.
B. Euthanasia is a difficult and heart-aching operation.
C. The more-difficult-to-save species will die by cleaning.
D. The rescue is oiled birds’ suffering while seeing them die is cruel.
9. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The process of rescuing oiled birds and its challenges.
B. The debate over the value and effectiveness of rescuing oiled birds.
C. The different methods used in rescuing oiled birds.
D. The long-term survival situation of rescued oiled birds.

根据第二段“Because the stress of being captured and bathed is as significant as the horror of being immersed in oil, and because research suggests that many rescued birds die shortly after being released, some experts say euthanasia (安乐死) is a more humane option.(因为被捕获和洗澡的压力和浸泡在石油中的恐惧一样大,而且因为研究表明许多获救的鸟类在被释放后不久就死亡了,一些专家说安乐死是一个更人道的选择)”可知,一些科学家怀疑拯救被石油污染的鸟类的努力是因为对鸟类来说,这是一种折磨,随之而来的是死亡。故选C。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Of course, being captured and cleaned is no picnic either. Some birds wind up returning to their destroyed habitats only to fall victim to the oil again. And those who manage to avoid a second oil bath suffer dramatically shortened life spans (跨度) and lower reproductive success. Of the thousands of birds that were rescued from the Prestige oil spill off the coast of Spain in 2002, only 600 were released into the wild; most of the rest died after just a few days in captivity.(当然,被捕获和清洗也不是一件轻松的事。一些鸟类最终回到它们被破坏的栖息地,只是再次成为石油的受害者。而那些设法避免第二次油浴的则会大大缩短寿命,生育成功率也会降低。2002年,从西班牙海岸漏油事故中获救的数千只鸟中,只有600只被放归野外;剩下的大多数鸟在被囚禁几天后就死了)”可知,西班牙海岸泄漏的案例被提及,以表明油污鸟的存活率很低。故选B。
【7题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“The workers do blood tests right in the field now and birds that are loaded with hydrocarbons (碳氢化合物) or don’t look like they’re going to make it are put down right away, rather than subjected to the stress of captivity and cleaning.(工人们现在就在现场做血液测试,那些含有碳氢化合物或看起来不太可能成功的鸟会被立即杀死,而不是承受圈养和清洁的压力)”可知,油污鸟的存活率会增加是因为救助者通常选择那些有可能存活下来的鸟。故选C。
【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Is it worth the effort? Some scientists aren’t so sure. Because the stress of being captured and bathed is as significant as the horror of being immersed in oil, and because research suggests that many rescued birds die shortly after being released, some experts say euthanasia (安乐死) is a more humane option.(这样做值得吗?一些科学家对此并不确定。因为被捕获和洗澡的压力和浸泡在油里的恐惧一样大,而且因为研究表明许多获救的鸟类在被释放后不久就死亡了,一些专家说安乐死是一个更人道的选择)”以及最后一段“Anyway, rescue efforts will continue in large part because the public demands that. Euthanasia is a difficult thing to do, especially for people who have built their lives around saving animals.(无论如何,救援工作将继续下去,这在很大程度上是因为公众的要求。安乐死是一件很难做到的事情,尤其是对那些以拯救动物为生活基础的人来说)”可知,一方面拯救被油污的鸟会给它们带来痛苦,另一方面看着它们死去又很残忍,所以拯救被油污的鸟仍然是一个有争议的问题,故选D。
【9题详解】

Depression (抑郁症) in young adult males, ages 18 or 19, is connected with a 20% greater risk of having a heart attack in middle age, according to a new Swedish study.
The connection can be partly explained by poorer stress resilience (抗压能力) and lower physical fitness among teens with mental disorders.
The research included 238,013 men born between 1958 and 1962 who were given exams in adolescence (青春期) and were then followed into middle age (up to the age of 58 years). A total of 34,503 men were diagnosed (诊断) with a mental disorder.
The study found that a mental disorder in young adulthood was connected with a higher risk of having heart attack by middle age. Compared to men without a mental illness in young adulthood, the risk of heart attack was 20% higher among men with a diagnosis.
“We already knew that men who were physically fit in adolescence seem less likely to keep fitness in later years if they have low stress resilience,” said study author Dr. Bergh, “Our research has also shown that low stress resilience is also connected with a greater tendency (趋势) towards bad behavior, such as higher risks of smoking, drinking and other drug use.”
“Better fitness in adolescence is likely to help protect against later heart disease, particularly if people stay fit as they age. Physical activities may also reduce some of the bad effects of stress. Those in poor health could benefit from additional support to encourage exercise and develop plans to deal with stress,” said Bergh.
10. How does the author develop paragraph 3?
A. By giving examples. B. By listing numbers.
C. By making a comparison. D. By drawing a conclusion.
11. What are men with low stress resilience likely to do?
A. Smoke more. B. Eat more. C. Sleep less. D. Do less exercise.
12. What will Bergh agree with according to the last paragraph?
A. Physical activities add to stress. B. Stress may cause heart disease.
C. Taking exercise is unnecessary. D. Staying fit is important.
13. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Entertainment. B. Education. C. Health. D. Fashion.
【答案】10. B 11. A 12. D 13. C

Scarborough has been on my holiday wish list for a long time, so, when I finally had a chance to get away from busy work, I couldn’t wait to book a family staycation in Britain’s original seaside, with its rich history and scenic views.
Our first calling point was the delightful Peasholm Park. Situated in Scarborough’s North Bay it was named the UK’s sixth Best Park. A relaxing afternoon walk was the perfect start to our trip. It features a lovely boating lake, an amazing waterfall and even a wishing well. The friendly squirrels that jump and run in the park, who will eat nuts from your hand, took me by surprise.
The next morning we began our trip up to Scarborough Castle. It’s quite a walk, especially when you meet wind and rain, but it’s totally worth the journey. I enjoyed exploring the remains of the castle, which includes an Iron Age settlement, Roman signal station, and 18th-century battery. With information boards spread around the site as well as audio guides, I could really throw myself into 3,000 years of history. Not only that, but from the battlement viewing platforms, you can be lost in impressive coastline views overlooking the North and South Bays.
On our final day in Scarborough, the sun was shining and we wandered along the sandy beach at North Bay, admiring our quiet surroundings. After a long walk, where better to rest our tired legs than resting beside Freddie Gilroy? The huge statue, created by Ray Lonsdale, pictures this former miner (矿工), who fought for the freedom of Belsen, sitting on a bench in his old age.
My first visit to Scarborough was everything that I had hoped and more, reminding me that we have some beautiful holiday destinations right on our doorstep without needing to head abroad. I’ll surely return to Scarborough in the future, once I’ve seen the other delights Britain has to offer.

One day he received a phone call, telling him about an opening for a graphic artist at a company in Manchester and asking him to attend the interview on Friday. Hearing this, Jack was really excited. He spent a large amount of time making preparations, including brushing up on his graphic skills and carrying out research on the company online, and finally booked a coach ticket to Manchester.
On Thursday afternoon, Jack boarded the coach. The passenger next to him was a young man. They had a delightful conversation, and Jack discovered that his fellow passenger, named John, was also a graphic artist living in the city. Upon reaching their destination, they stayed in the same hotel and continued their lively discussion late into the night. Their topics were related to their major and interests. Generally, they had a lot in common, and naturally, they became friends. Most importantly, John gave him a lot of advice on his interview. Jack was impressed by John’s professional knowledge. The next day, they exchanged contact information before they parted.
To Jack’s surprise, he came across John at the company. John greeted him with a smile and said, “I didn’t want the thought of competing against you to ruin our trip because they need only one graphic artist. Therefore, I didn’t mention that I would come for an interview at the company, or else, we couldn’t have had enjoyable chats.” He continued, “Anyway, I wish you good luck today.”

According to Deng, innovation is perhaps the best way for jingju to deal with the problem of an aging audience. It has made successful attempts to combine jingju with local opera forms such as ballet when organizing performances abroad. “Innovation can help traditional arts go further. We are happy to see many young faces, and some of them even come twice to experience the ‘new’ art,” she added.

B
B The second cleaning of the oiled birds in daytime is not permitted
C

B. Education. C. Health. D. Fashion.

Scarborough has been on my holiday wish list for a long time, so, when I finally had a chance to get away from busy work, I couldn’t wait to book a family staycation in Britain’s original seaside, with its rich history and scenic views.
Our first calling point was the delightful Peasholm Park. Situated in Scarborough’s North Bay, it was named the UK’s sixth Best Park.

Jack was a promising graphic artist (平面造型艺术家). He’d been searching for a suitable job for a long time. He failed many times; though he was a bit upset, he didn’t give up sending out his resumes.
What John said touched Jack deeply. “Thank you, John! All the best!” said Jack. Half an hour later, John left, while Jack was told to stay there a little longer.
