When I was 12 years old, I spent most of my free time reading. But sadly, not everyone around me enjoyed reading as much as I did, and not being able to talk about my favorite hobby with my friends made my reading a lonely experience.
In my senior year of high school, I came across a channel (频道), “Clau Reads Books” run by Claudia Ramírez Lomelí, who makes book- related content in Spanish, and was introduced to the book world of social media. I could finally hear someone else’s reaction to the stories I like. I love her videos because we prefer the same kind of books. Finally, I followed her on another social networking site, and I learned about the community on it where users blog (写网络日志) about their favorite books. I really wanted to be part of this space and seeing others being closely connected and supportive made it seem like an acceptable community. However, I doubted my ability to express my thoughts well because I was poor at creating content to interest other readers.
Therefore, I started reading blogs on how to start a new account (账户) for guidance and after weeks of researching, I learned about the necessary social media skills. I had to spend time designing small sets and finding natural lighting and household items for photo shoots, and learn how to write interesting review s while using hashtags (话题) in posts to attract other users.
My first post was a photo of my favorite book, Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick, with my hand’s shadow cast on a page. I also took pictures of several of my favorite sentences from the book and included a few hashtags to attract attention. Attracting people with similar interest was hard at first. But gradually, it became kid’s stuff. The community quickly became a good place for me to talk about my favorite books with people having the same interest.
4. Why did the 12-year-old author feel upset?
A. She couldn’t spare time for play. B. No one around her liked reading.
C. She couldn’t share her love of reading. D. No friend was fond of her favorite book.
5. What can we learn about Claudia Ramírez Lomelí?
A. She comes from Spain. B. She taught the author how to blog.
C. She hosts a TV program. D. She led the author to a new book world.
6. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 3?
A. Skills of choosing suitable hashtags. B. The author’s efforts to attract viewers.
C. Guidance on starting new accounts. D. The author’s techniques for creating content.
7 What does the author think of attracting people with similar interest now?
A. It is easily done. B. It is hard for kids.
C. It is easier said than done. D. It needs topics about kids.
C
The Yellow River is the resource of China’s civilization. And flood control and prevention have always been key to the well-being of the people living along it. Now, scientists can better work on these issues by giving the river a digital twin.
One big breakthrough in the river’s digital governance (治理) is “smart stones”. According to Wang Qin, a lead researcher at the Information Center of Yellow River Henan Bureau, a smart stone is a water-proof stone-shaped device with chips, a battery, and a signal transmitter. They are buried in important dike (堤坝) locations to record and report the movements of dike stones. “Upon feeling the movement of the dike stones, the smart stone sends an alarm to the center for quick response,” Wang said.
“In the past, researchers had to learn the conditions of the dike on the spot by themselves, putting their lives at risk,” said Zhao Xiao from the bureau. “Now the smart stones can do this for us, more safely, quickly, and accurately.”
And in the sky, drones (无人机) are flying. On the routes designed by engineers, the drones become expert patrollers (巡逻员) of the river, looking at its dikes and flood prevention projects. According to Shen Lin from the Yellow River Conservancy Commission, thanks to the drones, researchers at the command center can get first-hand photos and information. “Researchers then update the 3D model according to the changes the drones reported. The newly updated model helps us test our floodwater release plans in case we ever need to batten down the possible troubles,” said Shen.
Under the water and up in the sky, intelligence systems are helping to protect the Yellow River Basin on all fronts. According to the Ministry of Water Resources, in the future, we can expect to see the construction of an even more comprehensive digital system for this important river.
8. What is the main purpose of creating a digital twin of the Yellow River?
A. To conduct historical research.
B. To create a virtual tourist attraction.
C. To raise public awareness of river protection.
D. To improve flood control and prevention efforts.
9. How do the smart stones contribute to the river’s digital governance?
A. They record water quality.
B. They improve the river’s beauty.
C. They monitor and report dike movements.
D. They serve as markers for important locations.
10. What is one of the functions of drones in the digital governance of the Yellow River?
A. Entertaining tourists. B. Updating water data.
C. Taking wildlife photos. D. Collecting information on dike conditions.
11. What does the underlined phrase “batten down” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Deal with. B. Make up for.
C. Look forward to. D. Compete with.
D
When Amelia Hammersley was in sixth grade, her younger sister went to the hospital with a concussion (脑震荡) from a fall. People with concussion often take pain medicines to ease headaches. But heavy use of NSAIDs, a common type of pain killer, can come with serious side effects (副作用), especially if taken for a long time.
Now 16, Amelia has discovered that a plant medicine called celastrol might help reduce (减少) the need for NSAIDs. Celastrol comes from a plant used in China for hundreds of years to treat health problems. Amelia’s research suggests that celastrol might allow patients to take less NSAIDs.
“My sister led me to the research,” noted the teen, who is a student at Oak Park and River Forest High School in Oak Park, Ill. She showed her findings at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair.
Amelia found that celastrol could help the brain get well again and reduce inflammation (炎症) by blocking a specific brain pathway. She tested this using fruit flies, which have a similar inflammation pathway as humans.
Amelia bought over 120 fruit flies and tested their climbing ability in clear tubes. After giving each fly a concussion by dropping them from a spring-loaded tube, she tested their climbing speed again. Most flies took more than two minutes to climb, and some didn’t try at all.
She then fed the flies different treatments: one group received food with NSAIDs, another with celastrol, a third with both, and a fourth group got only food. After 24 hours, she tested their climbing ability again. The flies treated with both or just celastrol did better than those with NSAIDs alone or no treatment.
Amelia hopes to continue working on this project in the future. She believes celastrol, being low-cost and widely used, could make medicine more accessible in places where health care is costly or hard to get.
12. What makes Amelia carry out the research?
A. A road accident. B. Her painful illness.
C. A Chinese story. D. Her sister’s condition.
13. Why were the fruit flies grouped?
A. To shorten the testing time. B. To compare the test results.
C. To catch people’s attention. D. To complete the climb early.
14. What does Amelia expect of the plant medicine?
A. It’ll improve her health. B. It’ll kill the fruit flies.
C. It’ll help people in need. D. It’ll change her dream.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Widely Respected Doctor in America
B. Amelia’s Upcoming Plan to Study Medicine
C. The Future of Traditional Chinese Medicine
D. Celastrol’s Promise in Concussion Treatment

7. What does the author think of attracting people with similar interest now?
A. It is easily done. B. It is hard for kids.
C. It is easier said than done. D. It needs topics about kids.
【答案】4. C 5. D 6. B 7. A

When Amelia Hammersley was in sixth grade her younger sister went to the hospital with a concussion (脑震荡) from a fall.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. D
