第二部分 阅读 (共两节, 满分50分)
第一节 (共15小题;每小题2. 5分, 满分37. 5分)
阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中, 选出最佳选项。
A
A line of men tugged on ropes and dropped from the ship into the sea, with a group of Saibs prepared to pull them later from the sea bottom. Nasser, one of the divers, climbed over the railing of the ship and his Saib emptied his basket full of shells onto the deck.
“Get me something to fill my stomach with, boy.” I knew he was teasing as he is my father’s good friend.
“But I’m no longer an errand boy. I’m a diver, like my father was.”
“Your father was bald and deaf, like the rest of us,” Nasser laughed.
The salty Arabian Gulf produced the finest pearls in the world while the salty water also made divers lose their hair. Let alone the high pressure which cost them their hearing. I had shaved my head, in which way I felt more like a real diver. Of course, there’s no need for me to worry about the hair problem.
“I’ve dived the shallow seas before, and I can hold my breath fora whole minute.”
“Just pull your rope before you feel breathless.” He then disappeared into the water again.
I tied a heavy stone to my foot with a rope. Taking one more deep breath. I plugged my nose and jumped. With the stone finally hitting the seabed with a thump. I freed my foot from the rope. I scratched at the rocky ridge (脊), when three oysters dropped into my hands. I even didn’t have enough time to feel surprised at how easy the job was before I felt breathless.
Out of honor, I dragged the rope. Knowing that, tar above, the Saib’s strong arms strained to pull me toward the surface. I reminded myself to endure for a little more time. Just when I thought my lungs would burst, my cars popped and there was light.
Nasser burst through the water. He removed his nose plug and grinned at me looking at the three pitiful shells on the deck. “Not bad for an errand boy.” Seeing me upset with my head down, he patted me “It’s your first for such a depth. You did better than all of us.” Cheering up, I wrapped the empty basket around my neck and raised my chin, “I’m a pearl diver.”
21. According to Nasser, what did an errand boy usually do?
A. Pull divers from the sea. B. Empty baskets for divers.
C. Serve snacks for divers. D. Dive for shells.
22. Why did the author have his hair cut?
A. Because he tried to avoid losing hair.
B. Because all divers had shaved hair.
C. Because high pressure made him bald.
D. Because he wanted to look professional.
23. Why did the author get little harvest?
A. Because there were not many pearls in the area.
B. Because he still lacked experience in the job.
C. Because the Saib pulled him up too early without permission.
D. Because the rocky ridge was too rough.

Scientists from the National University of Singapore studied how much time twins spent in natural spaces compared with each other and found that they shared a similar level of desire to be in nature.
“The reason we decided to study this in twins is that we could estimate heritability(遗传性)based on the genetic similarities in identical twins(100%)versus genetic similarities in non-identical twins(50%),” said Chia-chen Chang, who led the study. “If a trait(特性), such as the desire to be in nature, is clearly more similar between identical twins than non-identical twins, this will then suggest a trait is heritable.”
Using the TwinsUK registry, researchers surveyed 1,153 pairs of twins—identical and non-identical—about how they experienced nature. They were required to answer questions involving how frequently they visit natural spaces such as public parks and private gardens and rate their familiarity with nature. After comparing and analyzing the collected data, researchers found that identical twins were more similar to each other in their attitudes towards nature.
While previous studies have found that spending time in natural spaces improves mental well-being, this varies from person to person. For the first time, the researchers say, this study has indicated why that is by suggesting there is likely to be a genetic component in our preference for nature and our likelihood to visit natural spaces.
However, heritability declined with age, perhaps showing that environmental factors such as access to nature and green spaces bring about a love of the outdoors as one grows older. That is to say, a person's desire to be in nature and how often they experience it are influenced by both genes and personal experiences. Those who live in urban environments without access to nature could end up having a lesser appreciation of it. Hence, it's necessary that diverse urban planning is needed to provide access to natural spaces-and the benefits they offer—for all.
27. Why were twins chosen as subjects of the study?
A. To acquire more accurate results. B. To confirm the previous studies.
C. To measure their gene similarity. D. To identify their specific hobbies.
28. How did the researchers carry out the study?
A. By analyzing previous data. B. By referring to online resources.
C. By asking and answering questions. D. By doing an experiment in the lab
29 What is special about this study?
A. It takes genes into consideration. B. It takes advantage of the Internet.
C. It provides a new insight into the role of nature. D. It reveals the link between nature and mental health.
30. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. One's love for nature is invariable. B. City planning leaves much to be desired.
C. It may be a better choice to live in rural areas. D. Genes are the only factor in shaping one's traits.
D
Living in a city is a well-known risk factor for developing a mental disorder, while living close to nature is largely beneficial for mental health and the brain. A central brain region, the amygdala (大脑杏仁核) involved in stress processing, has been shown to be less activated during stress in people living in rural areas, compared to those who live in cities, hinting at the potential benefits of nature. “But so far the hen-and-egg problem could not be resolved, namely whether nature actually caused the effects in the brain or whether the particular individuals chose to live in rural or urban regions,” says Sonja Sudimac.
To achieve causal evidence, the researchers from the group examined brain activity in regions involved in stress processing in 63 healthy volunteers before and after a one-hour walk in Grunewald forest or a shopping street with traffic in Berlin. The results revealed that activity in the amygdala decreased after the walk in nature, suggesting that nature elicits beneficial effects on brain regions related to stress.
“The results support the previously assumed positive relationship between nature and brain health, but this is the first study to prove the causal link. Interestingly, the brain activity after the urban walk in these regions remained stable and showed no increases, which argues against a commonly held view that urban exposure causes additional stress,” explains Simone Kühn, head of the group.
The authors show that nature has a positive impact on brain regions involved in stress processing and that it can already be observed after a one-hour walk. This contributes to the understanding of how our physical living environment affects brain and mental health. Even a short exposure to nature decreases amygdala activity, suggesting that a walk in nature could serve as a preventive measure against developing mental health problems and reducing the potentially disadvantageous impact of the city on the brain.
In order to investigate beneficial effects of nature in different populations and age groups, the researchers are currently working on a study examining how a one-hour walk in natural versus urban environments impacts stress in mothers and their babies.
31. What does the hen-and-egg problem mean by Sonja Sudimac?
A. Living in rural areas actually affects brain activity.
B. People in cities tend to have a higher risk of mental problems.
C. It’s unnecessary to work out the complex issue of stress and health.
D. It’s hard to clarify the impact of living environment on mental health.
32. How did researchers collect evidence for the study?
A. By quoting authoritative experts.
B. By interviewing healthy volunteers.
C. By researching on a previous theory.
D. By comparing volunteers’ amygdala activities.
33. What contribution did Simone Kühn and his team mainly make?
A. Confirming the assumption of nature’s benefits to brain health.
B. Supporting a commonly held view of urban exposure.
C. Revealing the link between age and mental health.
D. Identifying the causes of mental health problems.
34. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. Benefits of a regular walk in nature.
B. The focus of the follow-up research.
C. An appeal for living in urban regions.
D. Nature’s positive effects on women and children.

66. 阅读下面材料,根据内容及所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Steven Green was a hard-working man who worked all his life to support his family. He never finished college, so he had to take hard labor jobs around the neighborhood. He worked as a builder and a carpenter through the years. He often helped his neighbors whenever he was needed. However, as he grew older, he could no longer do these jobs. His knees grew weak, and his health condition made it difficult for him to do hard work.
Steven’s kids didn’t live in the same state as him and could only send him a small sum of money because they also led a poor life. Unfortunately, Steven experienced constant physical pain after years of hard work, and he needed to take medicine every day. The money offered by his kids was only enough for food, and his savings were small. Realizing that he needed more money, Steven decided to get a job again. He eventually found a job as a doorkeeper. At first, his salary was enough to pay for the groceries and the medicine he needed. However, due to his advanced age, he started to need more medicine, which cost a lot.
To pay the growing bills, Steven began to take items from his home to a second-hand store to get some money. One day, as he was carrying an old radio to the store, his neighbor, Ben, saw him. “Mr. Green, it’s so good to see you! How have you been?” Ben asked. “I’m doing great. I’m just selling some stuff at home that I don’t need anymore for some cash. Being weak is terrible when you’re old, so take care of yourself when you are young, alright?” he said almost jokingly. Ben nodded.
“Thanks for the tip, Mr. Green!” he said before waving goodbye. That same day, Steven was cooking dinner when he heard the doorbell ring. Not expecting anyone, he walked curiously to the door.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

A. He displayed a special sofa. B. He designed a sofa using bags. C. He searched a fair for old items.
7. What does Katie Treggiden think furniture companies should do?
A. Improve product quality. B. Lengthen furniture’s life. C. Use sustainable material.
8. What is the main focus of the speaker?
A. A designer’s green sofa. B. The change in the fashion industry. C. Problems in the furniture industry.
【答案】6. A 7. B 8. C
【解析】
【原文】M: Russian designer Harry Nuriev’s latest sofa is made from a pile of waste bags. He wants it to draw attention to waste things and how we use them. The piece was based on an idea he first explored at a fair in 2019, when he presented a sofa made from old clothes. The project commented on the fashion industry’s waste problem, which is mainly generated by cheap, trend-responsive “fast fashion”. The project also drew a direct line between the waste problem and the furniture industry. It’s estimated that 9 million tons of furniture are thrown away every single year, and over 80% of it ends up in landfill. Add to that the carbon releases caused by producing and shipping it, and the furniture industry looks like another threat to the global climate. With so much waste furniture, brands that make typically “fast” furniture are announcing efforts to change. Some companies commit to using only renewable or recyclable materials to cut carbon release. Katie Treggiden, design expert and author of Wasted: When Trash Becomes Treasure, said that having a long life has been a key selling message among responsible furniture companies for a long time. She added they also need to offer repair and take-back service to give their products a second life.

【原文】W: Hi Kevin. I’ve just got back from the Art Gallery. There’s a wonderful show of abstract art. You should have come with me.
M: I don’t know. Abstract art seems like children’s painting to me.
W: Well, if you don’t understand what the artist is trying to communicate, it can seem a little like that.
M: What did you see then?
W: There were two paintings that impressed me most. The first is a huge one which I supposed the tree although it could have been anything.
M: What did you like about it?
W: Just the way the tree looked. It was like the tree was made of hard metal, and the mix of white and gray made everything look like it was winter, freezing winter.
M: That’s something. What about the other one?
W: The second looked like a piece of grassland. All the grass was purple and red, and there was green sky in the background. I looked at it and thought of summer.
M: Hmm, your description really teaches me something about appreciating abstract art. Maybe I should go and give this show a try this Saturday.
W: You really should.

C To measure their gene similarity. D. To identify their specific hobbies.
28. How did the researchers carry out the study?
A. By analyzing previous data. B. By referring to online resources.
C. By asking and answering questions. D. By doing an experiment in the lab
29. What is special about this study?
【答案】27. A 28. C 29. A 30. B

【答案】31. D 32. D 33. A 34. B
【解析】

【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段的“The results support the previously assumed positive relationship between nature and brain health, but this is the first study to prove the causal link.(研究结果支持了之前假设的自然和大脑健康之间的正相关关系,但这是首次证明因果关系的研究)”可知,Simone Kühn和他的团队的主要贡献是证实了自然对大脑健康有益的假设。故选A。
【34题详解】

【答案】范文
Surprisingly, he saw Ben standing there with a jacket in his arms. “Earlier today, I noticed you weren’t wearing a jacket. It’s getting cold these days, so I want to give you this jacket as a gift,” Ben said, handing Steven the coat. Steven accepted the gift and thanked Ben a lot. The next day, Steven wore the jacket to work. Feeling cold, he put his hands inside the pockets. Then he found there was something inside. To his surprise, it was a check for $ 200!
“Ben must have forgotten about the check inside the pocket,” Steven thought. He then went to Ben’s house. “I believe this is yours,” Steven said, showing Ben the check. But Ben shook his head and said the check was Steven’s. Seeing Steven’s confused face, Ben explained Steven had helped his mom a lot and that he had never had a chance to repay Steven’s kindness before. Therefore, when he realized Steven needed help, he decided to reach out. Hearing those words, Steven was so touched that he hugged Ben tightly.
