Your job is to try and catch me in the lie of the day.” That was really a clever way to fix our attention on the difficult subject—geography. Then in the following weeks, we didn’t let off every single word of what he said in class and challenged his lectures. When his class ended and nobody saw through the lie, Mr. Smith would say, “Ah ha! Each of you has a lie in your notes. Discuss among yourselves what it might be, and I will tell you at the end of this term,” Mr. Smith’s special style of teaching worked. All of us reviewed and discussed our notes actively. One Monday at the end of the term, Mr. Smith listened carefully to what we questioned for almost ten minutes. Then he finally said, “Do you still remember the first lesson?” Confused (困惑的), we said yes. “Well, that was a real big lie. In fact, all the lectures I’ve given before are completely true. But I am glad you worked so hard. Move on.” Hearing this, all eyes in the classroom went wide. While most of my knowledge of geography has been forgotten over time, his lessons have stayed with me. Mr. Smith helped us build a habit of evaluating new information and checking it against things we have already accepted as a fact. 5. What happened in Mr. Smith’s class? A. The students always told lies. B. The students always talked with others. C. The students listened to him carefully. D. The students had to write down all of his words. 6. The village was unusually quiet. The villagers talked little but sighed (叹息) often. Children had no heart in sports and gave them up. People were sad to know that Tom, Joe and Huck were drowned (淹死). In the afternoon, Becky found herself walking around the yard and feeling very sad. She said to herself, “I haven’t got anything to remember Tom by. He’s gone now. I’ll never, never see him any more.” Then there was a debate about who saw the dead boys last in life. Many said they did and offered evidence. When it was finally decided who saw the dead boys last, the lucky ones took upon themselves some self-importance. The next morning, when the bell began to toll (鸣钟), the villagers got together in the church. No one could remember when the little church had been so full before. Aunt Polly entered. She was followed by Sid and Mary and by the Harper family. They were all in deep black. As the funeral continued, people felt sorry that they did not treat the boys well before. They only saw faults (缺点) in them. People gave way to their feelings and cried. A moment later, the church door opened slowly. People raised their eyes above handkerchiefs and they were surprised. They saw Tom, Joe and Huck— the three dead boys walk into the church! They had been hiding and listening to their own funeral! Aunt Polly, Mary and the Harpers threw themselves upon their children and kissed them again and again. Tom got hundreds of kisses that day. Before this, he didn’t know he was loved by so many people. 9. Why was the village unusually quiet? A. Because Tom, Joe and Huck went missing. B. Because Tom, Joe and Huck were believed to have died. A dentist can use X-rays to look at teeth. And airport workers use an X-ray machine to check objects before a plane leaves. Nowadays, X-ray technology is widely used in medicine and other fields. X-rays were first discovered by a German scientist, Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen (1845 – 1923). He found them quite by accident in 1895. One day, he discovered that an unknown kind of radiation (放射线) could hardly pass through hard objects like bones (骨头). Later, Röntgen took a photo of his wife's hand. It clearly showed her ring and her bones. That was the first X-ray photo in the world. Why is there an“X” in the word X-ray? It’s because Röntgen couldn’t explain exactly how it worked. He just knew that X-rays were new and useful for science. In fact, X-rays soon became an important tool in medicine. With the help of X-rays, doctors could see inside the human body for the first time without surgery (外科手术). Röntgen was awarded the first Nobel Prize (诺贝尔奖) in physics in 1901 for his discovery. When he was asked what he was thinking at the moment of discovery, he replied, “I didn’ t think, I investigated (研究).” Röntgen gave away his Nobel Prize money to his university. And he never took out any patents (专利权) on X-rays, to make sure that the world could freely make use of his discovery. 41. Where is X-ray technology used? ______________________________________________________________ 42. When were X-rays discovered? ______________________________________________________________ 43. Why did Röntgen name the ray“X-ray”? _______________________________________________________________ 44. What do you think of Röntgen? Why? Write 30 words or more. ______________________________________________________________ 【答案】41. X-ray technology is widely used in medicine and other fields. 42. He was also very generous and selfless, giving away his Nobel Prize money to his university and not taking out any patents on X-rays to ensure that his discovery could be freely used by everyone. 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,主要介绍了科学家Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen如何发现的X射线以及X射线的应用领域等。 【41题详解】 根据“Nowadays, X-ray technology is widely used in medicine and other fields.”可知,它被广泛应用于医学和其他领域。故填X-ray technology is widely used in medicine and other fields. 【42题详解】 根据“He found them quite by accident in 1895.”可知,X射线于1895年被发现。故填X-rays were discovered in 1895. 【43题详解】 根据“Why is there an ‘X’ in the word X-ray? And he never took out any patents on X-rays, to make sure that the world could freely make use of his discovery.”可知,Röntgen把他的诺贝尔奖金捐给了他的大学。而且他从未为X射线申请过任何专利,以确保世界可以自由地利用他的发现,故可知他是一个无私的人。故填Röntgen was a great scientist who made an important discovery that benefited the whole world. First of all, a lot of students haven’t formed a habit of reading. They would rather spend their spare time on watching TV or surfing the Internet than reading books. Besides, some of them have too much homework and too many after-school classes to attend. However, reading has many advantages. Through reading, we can learn more about the world. Also, reading can help us think better and make our life more colorful. For my reading plan, I will read more science and history books. I also want to read famous novels to improve my English. B “Listen!” Mr. Smith said seriously at the beginning of his first class. “I will put one lie into each of my classes. A. C On that Saturday afternoon, the Harpers and Aunt Polly’s family went into mourning (哀悼). Aunt Polly knew Tom was playing a trick again D There is an old Chinese saying, “If someone gives you a little drop of water, you should return a spring of water.” That means if someone helps you a bit, you should remember it and thank them gratefully (感激地) in return. Of course, we should thank people who help us. We should thank people who teach us. We should thank people who care about us. We thank our parents. They cook meals for us, they do the chores for us, they always give us food and clothes, and they teach us what is right and what is wrong. We thank our teachers who give us dreams. They teach us a lot of things but they ask for nothing from us. We are well-educated because of them. There are many people that we should be grateful to in our life. We should find a way to thank them. 13. What does the old Chinese saying mean? A. We should be grateful to people who help us. B. We can give more water to people if they help us. C. 41.
