She is part of a four-woman team that recently set the record for the fastest rowing time from California to Hawaii. Kala has deep ties to her Hawaiian roots. Her ancestors navigated the oceans for centuries using their knowledge of the stars, the sun, the currents and the wind. Today, she does the same. It’s not that she navigates without technology. Rather, she uses the natural technology around her. It’s called Wayfinding. Wayfinding was taught to her by her father who had learned it from their ancestors. During the day, Kala uses the sun until it hits a certain height. When she gets closer to land, she looks for certain species of land birds and stationary (静止不动的) clouds that indicate there is land below. “I feel very connected to my ancestors when I sail. I feel very connected to the crew and the canoe,” says Kala. The voyage (航行) from California to Hawaii required Kala to spend long hours studying the day and the night skies. It was demanding, physical work. It also had its moments of feeling awful. For Kala, the beauty is in tying together the past and the present to enjoy the moment. Now when she is not sailing, she teaches Wayfinding skills to school-aged children in hopes of passing on the skills her ancestors relied on. Today, it’s easy for children to get lost in the immediacy (直观性) of the technology of our day, to be consumed by screens and miss the nature that unfolds around us. But if we take the time to look up, to see the stars and the sun, the way the clouds move, the miracle of life beneath and above us, we will discover something deep inside us, something that will always lead to happiness. 24. How did Kala complete her voyage? A. By rowing a canoe. B. With friends’ help. C. With the help of a guide. D. By turning to her father. 25. Why did Kala feel connected to her ancestors while sailing? A. She could enjoy her knowledge of nature. B. Her whole family sailed together with her. C. She sailed with their natural technology. D. They had made the canoe and left it for her. 26. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. Children are lost in the natural technology. B. Getting close to nature brings us happiness. C. Most children take their time to enjoy nature. D. Wayfinding skills aren’t required anymore today. 27. What’s the author’s purpose of writing this text? A. To tell an inspiring story to us. B. To explain what Wayfinding is. C. To teach us how to sail in a canoe. D. To tell us how to tell the stars at night. C Microplastics (塑料微粒) are found everywhere from the top of mountains to the ocean deep — even inside people. Microplastics are tiny. But they pose a big pollution problem. These tiny bits of trash are 5 millimeters or smaller. Some are made that small. For instance, the tiny beads in some toothpastes and face washes are microplastics. But many microplastics are debris (碎片) from larger plastic pieces that have broken down. Microplastics travel far on winds and ocean currents. They’ve ended up everywhere from mountaintops to Arctic ice. Microplastics are so widespread that many animals end up eating them. Plastic bits have turned up in birds, fish, whales, corals and many other creatures. Microplastics are found inside people, too. Americans are thought to consume some 70,000 microplastic pieces each year. People might take in plastic particles floating through the air. Or they may eat fish or other animals that contain microplastics — or drink water polluted with this trash. Microplastics can then pass from the lungs or get into the bloodstream. This pollution may prevent their growth or cause other harms. Researchers do not yet know the health risks of being exposed to (接触) so much microplastic. But they are worried. Why? Plastics are made of many different chemicals. Some of these are known to bring health risks to people. Engineers are coming up with solutions to the microplastic problem. Some are working on new ways to break down plastics in the environment. Others are devising more environmentally friendly materials to use instead of plastic. But to decrease microplastic pollution to the most extent, we should use less plastic. 28. What does the underlined word “pose” in paragraph 1 mean? A. Prevent. B. Allow. C. Cause. D. Destroy. 29. What is the third paragraph mainly about? A. Whether microplastics do harm to creatures. B. How microplastics can travel to the ocean. C. Why creatures are harmed by microplastics. D. Where microplastics are most easily found. 30. Why are researchers worried about being exposed to microplastics? A. They can travel deep into ocean. B. They are too small for us to see. C. Their impacts on health are still unknown. D. They bring health risks to people. 31. What is the most effective way to fight microplastic pollution? A. Using less plastic. B. Using less chemicals. C. Breaking down plastic. D. Looking for new materials. D Scientific studies have shown that kindness has many physical and emotional benefits. A great number of reasons have been reported to support the theory of teaching kindness in schools. Science explains that the good feelings we experience when being kind are produced by endorphins (内啡肽) that make areas of the brain active that are associated with pleasure, social connection and trust. And it’s proven that these feelings of joyfulness can spread from one person to another, encouraging more kind behaviors by both givers and receivers. Studies show that people experience a rush of endorphins that creates a lasting sense of pride, well-being and an enriched sense of belonging when they do a good deed. Even small acts of kindness are reported to promote our sense of well-being, increase energy and give a wonderful feeling of optimism and self-worth. It’s widely recorded in documents that being kind can also cause a release of the hormone oxytocin which has a number of physical and mental health benefits as it can significantly increase a person’s level of happiness and reduce stress. It also plays a significant role in the cardiovascular (心血管的) system, helping protect the heart. As it increases serotonin, which plays an important part in learning, memory, mood, sleep, health and digestion, kindness is a key element that helps children feel good. Having a positive attitude allows them greater attention spans and enables more creative thinking to produce better results at school. Kindness changes the brain by the experience of kindness. Children and adolescents do not learn kindness by only thinking about it and talking about it. Kindness is best learned by feeling it so that they can reproduce it. Kindness is an emotion that students feel and empathy is a strength that they share. 32. What can endorphins bring to people? A. Freedom. B. Curiosity. C. Happiness. D. Confidence. 33. Which of the following is helpful in protecting people’s heart? A. Serotonin. B. Endorphin. C. A sense of pride. D. Hormone oxytocin. 34. What is the best way to learn kindness? A. Sharing it. B. Experiencing it. C. Talking about it. D. Thinking about it. 35. What is the best title for this text? A. Importance of teaching kindness B. Importance of good concentration C. How to improve health and happiness D. At times, we all want to look a bit more like someone else. However, the pictures we see on TV and social media can give us improper ideas about how our bodies “should” look. The truth is that everybody is different. ___36___ Accepting and feeling good about our bodies is really important for our self-confidence. ___37___ Body confidence is when someone accepts, appreciates and behaves kindly towards their body. That includes our size and shape, skin color, appearance and any physical disabilities. Jade Parnell from the Centre for Appearance Research (CAR), says that having body confidence is “about being accepting of your body and what it does for you”. If you feel positive about your body, you are more likely to take care of it. ___38___ However, feeling worried about your body could make you step back, do less well at school and even feel down. Researchers say, “If you are spending a lot of time trying to look a certain way, you will have less time to spend with friends and to make important memories.” Remember that everybody is different. To develop a positive body image, Parnell suggests trying to talk positively about your own body and other people’s bodies. ___39___ Instead, think about “What does your body do for you?” “Do your legs make you run really fast?” She also suggests treating your body well by eating different kinds of foods, exercising to feel good and to have fun, and getting plenty of sleep. ___40___ A. And that’s a good thing. B. What is body confidence? C. What should your body look like? D. Try not to pay much attention to appearance. E. Remember that you are more than how you look. F. Research has shown that you are more likely to take part in activities. G. People with body shame are more likely to have disordered eating behavior. My name’s Nyombi Morris, a Ugandan climate activist and CEO of the non-profit Earth Volunteers. There were the geeks, the jocks (小丑) , and the popular cool kids. I wasn’t sure where I belonged. And I think that was a problem. Our teacher had assigned “secret friends” for the coming week. The purpose of this assignment was to do nice things for your friend without letting them know who was doing it. We could leave encouraging notes on their desk or mysteriously leave a card in their backpack or book. Our teacher wrote each kid’s name on a piece of paper and threw them into a bucket, then we each closed our eyes and drew the name of the classmate who we were to secretly befriend and support over the next five school days. Everyone was excited to get involved, including Rochelle. By the middle of the week, we had turned this assignment into a contest to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. Instead of encouraging notes, we left stationary sets on our friend’s desk. Instead of giving compliments, we were giving bubble gum, lollipops and even money. It seemed that everyone was getting cool presents from their friends. Everyone except me, that is. My secret friend followed our teacher’s directions without a fault. I received handmade cards, notes with nice thoughts and countless smiley face pictures saying that I was one of the nicest girls in the class. This friend seemed to think highly of me from the notes that were left, but the lack of gifts kept me wondering what was up with whoever had pulled my name. On the last morning of our assignment, I walked into my classroom and noticed a package on my desk. At last, my secret friend had grasped the idea that a gift was what I really needed. I quickly ripped open the gift paper, only to find a small doll inside. The pink wool-knit doll seemed not new but delicate. But the girls sitting near me giggled and gossiped about the “little girl” gift I had received. Hearing this, I felt my face turn red. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ It turned out that my secret friend was Rochelle, coming from a poor family. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 高一年级上学期期末考试模拟卷 英语试卷 第一部分 听力 (共两节,满分30分) 第一节 (共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 6. So I’m writing to seek your help. I find it hard to remember English words. Besides, English grammar is so difficult that I cannot make out sentence successfully, and many sentences are difficult for me to understand. I have been trying my best to learn harder, for example, noting more words and expressions down, seeing English movies, etc. However, it makes little difference. I am more confused. How can I improve my English? What should I do? I would be thankful if you could give me some suggestions. Looking forward to your reply. One Possible Version: Hearing this, I felt my face turn red. Embarrassed and ashamed, I secretly complained that the girl gave me so stupid a gift to arouse others’ derision. I even joined other girls in gossiping about my secret friend and the poor doll. When I continued with mean remarks, a girl sitting at the last row arose and came up, casting me an angry and disappointed look. With tears streaming down her face, she admitted, “I’m your secret friend and I’m sorry about the gift.” Then she ran out of the classroom. Frozen with shock, I couldn’t utter a single word. It turned out that my secret friend was Rochelle, coming from a poor family. She had saved every penny in her pocket money in order to give me a cool gift. With the limited money, she visited a lot of stores and finally selected the lovely doll from a second-hand store. Actually, she gave me a most valuable gift with her sincere heart. However, I didn’t treasure and hurt her badly in such a cruel way. So ashamed was I that it took me a few days to pluck up my courage to face up to Rochelle and apologize. Much to my delight, she forgave me and later we became best friends. Most importantly, we found where we belonged. How was your picnic in the mountains?
