A
(23-24高一上·8省联考)My teenage son Karl became withdrawn (内向的) after his father died. As a single parent, I tried to do my best to talk to him. But the more I tried, the more he pulled away. When his report card arrived during his junior year, it said that he had been absent 95 times from classes and had six falling grades for the year. At this rate he would never graduate. I sent him to the school adviser, and I even begged him. Nothing worked.
One night I felt so powerless that I got down on my knees and begged for help. “Please God, I can’t do anything more for my son. I’m at the end of my rope. I’m giving the whole thing up to you. ”
I was at work when I got a phone call. A man introduced himself as the headmaster. “I want to talk to you about Karl’s absences. ” Before he could say another word, I cried and all my disappointment and sadness over Karl came pouring out into the ears of this stranger. “I love my son but I just don’t know what to do. I’ve tried everything to get Karl to go back to school but nothing has worked. It’s out of my hands. ” For a moment there was silence on the other end of the line. The headmaster seriously said, “Thank you for your time,” and hung up.
Karl’s next report card showed a marked improvement in his grades. Finally, he even made the honor roll. In his fourth year, I attended a parent-teacher meeting with Karl. I noticed that his teachers were astonished at the way he had turned himself around. On our way home, he said, “Mum, remember that call from the headmaster last year?” I nodded. “That was me. I thought I’d play a joke but when I heard what you said, it really hit me how much I was hurting you. That’s when I knew I had to make you proud. ”
1. What did the author do to help Karl at the beginning?
A. She went to begging in the street.
B. She knelt down to ask God for help.
C. She asked Karl’s best friend to talk to Karl.
D. She went to see the school adviser in person.
2. What does the underlined sentence “he even made the honor roll” mean?
A. He was even on the list to be punished.
B. He was even on the list of students who were lazy.
C. He was even on the list of the best students at school.
D. He was even on the list of students who were always late for school.
3. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. Mother’s love plays an important role in teenagers’ life.
B. Being understood by parents is very important to teenagers.
C. Children in single-parent families often have mental problems.
D. School education doesn’t work without full support from parents.

根据第二段的“One night I felt so powerless that I got down on my knees and begged for help. “Please God, I can’t do anything more for my son. I’m at the end of my rope. I’m giving the whole thing up to you. ”(一天晚上,我感到无能为力,于是我跪下来请求帮助。“上帝啊,我不能再为我儿子做什么了。我已经走投无路了。我把这一切都交给你了。”)”可知,作者在一开始跪下请求上帝来帮助改变卡尔。故选B。
2. 句意猜测题。根据第四段的“In his fourth year, I attended a parent-teacher meeting with Karl. ”(卡尔的下一张成绩单显示他的成绩有了明显的提高。在卡尔四年级的时候,我和他一起参加了一次家长会。我注意到他的老师们对他变好的方式感到惊讶。在回家的路上,他说:“妈妈,还记得去年校长打来的那个电话吗?”我点了点头。“那是我。我以为我只是开个玩笑,但当我听到你说的话时,我真的意识到我是多么地伤害了你。从那时起,我就知道我必须让你感到骄傲。”) ”可知,卡尔为让母亲高兴,她后来便努力学习,由本段段首句“Karl’s next report card showed a marked improvement in his grades. ”可知,卡尔取得了进步,再由划线句子中的even可知,卡尔应该是取得了更大的进步,因此C项(他甚至上了荣誉榜)表明卡尔取得了进步。故选C。
3. 主旨大意题。通读全文,根据第一段的“My teenage son Karl became withdrawn after his father died. Nothing worked(我十几岁的儿子卡尔在他父亲去世后变得孤僻。作为一个单亲妈妈,我尽我最大的努力和他说话。但我越努力,他就越疏远我。当他在大三拿到成绩单时,上面写着他一年中旷课95次,成绩下降了6次。照这样下去,他永远也毕业不了。我把卡尔送到学校顾问那里,我甚至求卡尔。但毫无效果。)”和根据第四段的“In his fourth year, I attended a parent-teacher meeting with Karl. 故选A。

You Life is What You Make It
Zhang Tian graduated from university and got a teacher’s certificate last year. His parents wanted him to get a good job in Shanghai. But he was inspired by the idea of living independently away from home. So he applied for and became a volunteer teacher in a village school. Bringing with him lots of books, clothes, and two pairs of trainers, Zhang Tian travelled to the village with an eager heart. He imagined all sorts of exciting things about living and teaching in a village.
However, not everything lived up to Zhang Tian’s hopes. The school was much smaller than he expected, with only three classrooms. In front of the classrooms, there was a playground which got dusty on windy days and muddy on rainy days. Living In the village was also more challenging than he had thought. The power and water supplies were unstable, so he could only shower every three or four days, and he had to learn how to cook. The thought of leaving once flashed through his mind, but he quickly gave up the idea and found ways to deal with the challenges.
The school had just three teachers and Zhang Tian was the only English teacher. The other two local teachers were responsible for maths and Chinese. To make school life healthier and livelier for his students, Zhang Tian introduced more subjects to the school — music, art and PE. It is not surprising that PE is the kids’ favourite subject! Their school lives are now more attractive and interesting, and they enjoy playing football in the playground, as well as singing songs they’ve learnt. The school is now full of laughter and music. Zhang Tian is planning to organise the first ever school concert! Everyone is very excited.
4. Why did Zhang Tian choose to be a volunteer teacher?

B. His parents wanted him to be a teacher.

D. He needed the experience to get a teacher’s certificate.

A. PE was the kid’s favourite subject.
B. Students were short of books and desks.

6. Which of the following best describes Zhang Tian’s life?

(23-24高一上·河北保定·期中)Society tells us that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. But it doesn’t have to be that way. A new study published in Human Development points out that using a childlike way of learning can help people of any age take on and deal with new difficult tasks. 7 .
Venture (冒险) outside your comfort zone. As adults, we tend to use similar skills day in and day out: We take jobs in fields we’ re already good at, drive on the same roads to the same places, and fall into routines we re comfortable with. 8 Changing to something more difficult may have more cognitive benefits.
9 A fear of making mistakes is another reason why adults are so slow to learn new things; if we try and fail, we can face criticism, lose money, or get fired. That’s why it’s important to build up a support network of people — at work and at home — who allow you to make mistakes and learn from them.
Make a serious commitment and don’t give up. 10 If you can afford it, spending money on a new goal — for example, booking a trip to Rome to practice your Italian — might also make it harder to just give up.
Learn more than one thing at once. We tend to pay attention to one hobby or one skill. But dividing that time and energy into three or four areas will stretch your brain in all different directions. 11 For example, maybe you started learning a new language last year, and this year you add singing lessons, and next year you try something else. You can add things gradually to what you can handle.
A. Turn to your friends and family.
B. The following ways will do the trick.
C. Surround yourself with encouraging people and no fear for mistakes.
D. Telling friends about your new goal can help keep you motivated.
E. But all this similar routine limits the parts of the brain that we’re using regularly.
F. That doesn’t mean you should start all the new hobbies all at once, though.
G. So feeling comfortable can reduce stress and make you happier and more productive.
B 8. E 9. C 10. D 11. F
7. 根据空前的“A new study published in Human Development points out that using a childlike way of learning can help people of any age take on and deal with new difficult tasks.
8. 上文“As adults, we tend to use similar skills day in and day out: We take jobs in fields we’re already good at, drive on the same roads to the same places, and fall into routines we re comfortable with. (作为成年人,我们倾向于日复一日地使用类似的技能:我们从事我们已经擅长的领域的工作,在同样的道路上开车去同样的地方,并陷入我们习以为常的日常生活中)”指出作为成年人,我们每日做着类似的日常活动,使用类似的技能;下文“Changing to something more difficult may have more cognitive benefits. (改变更困难的东西可能对认知有更多的好处)”指出做出改变走出舒适区去挑战更难的事情对认知有更多的好处;由此可知,设空处阐述重复使用类似的技能与一成不变的习惯对我们的影响;E选项“But all this similar routine limits the parts of the brain that we’re using regularly. (但所有这些类似的日常活动限制了我们经常使用的大脑部分)”阐述类似的日常活动限制了认知能力的发展,符合语境。故选E。
9. 此处为本段主题句,根据本段内容,特别是“That’s why it’s important to build up a support network of people — at work and at home — who allow you to make mistakes and learn from them. (这就是为什么建立一个由工作和家庭中的人组成的支持网络很重要,他们可以允许你犯错误并从中吸取教训)”可知,本段讲的是要和支持你的人在一起,他们让你不害怕犯错误并能够从错误中吸取教训,C项“Surround yourself with encouraging people and no fear for mistakes. (和鼓励你的人在一起,不要害怕犯错)”建议结交能够给人以鼓励的人且不要害怕犯错,符合本段主旨。故选C。
10. 由上文“Make a serious commitment and don’t give up. (做出认真的承诺,不要放弃)”可知,本段主要阐述要做一个严肃的承诺且不要放弃;下文“If you can afford it, spending money on a new goal — for example, booking a trip to Rome to practice your Italian — might also make it harder to just give up.
11. 下文“For example, maybe you started learning a new language last year, and this year you add singing lessons, and next year you try something else. You can add things gradually to what you can handle. (例如,也许你去年开始学习一门新语言,今年你增加了唱歌课程,明年你尝试其他的东西。你可以逐渐增加你能处理的事情)”举例说明不必一下子开始所有的新尝试,可以循序渐进根据自己的能力逐步添加内容;F选项“That doesn’t mean you should start all the new hobbies all at once, though. (但这并不意味着你应该一次开始所有的新爱好)”与上文“But dividing that time and energy into three or four areas will stretch your brain in all different directions.

In the back of my closet is a small box that has followed me to every new address. It’s the first thing I find a place for as the moving truck pulls away. The only remaining contents in it are dozens of notes in my mother’s tidy writing. My mother, who put her business degree to use running a small company with my father, while raising me, was always prepared and always gave me abundant love. By day she made marketing slogans and distribution strategies. By night: bubble baths and bedtime stories. She and I had the same February birthday. Each year my parents arranged wonderful parties.
When I was 3, she learned she had advanced breast cancer and immediately began to prepare by rescarching every available treatment. Each day, she would sit for hours at our dining table, her straight dark hair tied back, surrounded by piles of paper, studying, technical paragraphs.
When I was 7, the materials on the dining table began to change. Wrapping (包装) paper and ribbons (丝带) took the place of her highlighted pages. Paper creased (折) under her fingers. Knots (蝴蝶结) came together with a tiny creak. She had begun making a gift box for me.
Inside, she packed presents and letters for the milestones of my life she would miss—graduation, wedding, and every birthday until the age of 30. My mother died 10 days before our shared birthday. That morning, when I turned 12 and she would have turned 49, I woke up early and opened the box as my mother had shown me.
Neat rows of brightly wrapped presents glowed like the spring tulips (郁金香) that were just coming up in the front yard. In the package marked “12th Birthday”, I found a little ring with an amethyst (紫水晶) at its center. A white card curling around the present read: “I always wanted a birthstone ring when I was a little girl. I hope you like it, too. Happy birthday, darling girl! Love, your Mommy. ”
注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

Today I hit 31, and I sat in my room, holding the nearly empty box.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
On the morning of my high school graduation, I walked to the box. The box sat quietly at the foot of my bed, as if waiting for me. Unexpectedly I found out the package labeled “graduation” and unwrapped it. A string of pearl necklaces caught the eyes. Her note read, “There seemed to be a tradition in my family that when girls graduated from high school, they received a string of pearls. You must be shiny at the ceremony. ” As I read, I wanted to fall through the white, lightly textured page and into her arms. Wearing the pearls that afternoon, I accepted my diploma.
Today I hit 31, and I sat in my room, holding the nearly empty box. For 20 years I have pulled love from the box. When I was a child, opening the next package seemed like a treasure hunt. As I grew older, it became something far more fundamental, her messages meeting me like guideposts in a dark forest. There is no gifts left in the box now, but these letters are a constant reminder that I have already been given what every child, what every human, needs. I have been fiercely, extravagantly, wildly loved. The love is powerful enough to help me carve my life in my whole life.
