【原文】W: Alan Turing was born in 1912. When he was 19, he went to study mathematics at King’s College, Cambridge. Four years later, he designed a machine to solve mathematical problems. The next year, he got his PhD at Princeton University, the USA. During 1945-1954, he worked on designs for computers. One of his most famous ideas was the Turing Test. He thought computers could be made to do everything a person could do. So his test was to see when a computer could be considered to be like a human being. He thought if a person could communicate with the computer and you couldn’t tell if you talked with a person or a computer, that computer would become just like a human being. Alan Turing had made a great contribution to human beings, but unfortunately, he killed himself for depression.

Thailand is no longer just for holidays. The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) was introduced on June 1 and enables remote workers to stay in the country for up to five years. But keep in mind that you need to leave and re-enter the country every 180 days, and pay an extra $270 each time. Until now, digital nomads (数字游民) could only stay in Thailand on tourist visas for up to 60 days, so this is a huge jump.
It follows similar programs in Malaysia and Indonesia, which are among the popular vacation countries. The new visa allows visitors to stay longer and is expected to lead to a huge rise in the number of travelers. As a result, it can bring new energy to the Thai economy, making it stronger and more lively.
Who can apply for Thailand’s digital nomad visa?
Applicants must either work for themselves or work for a company outside of Thailand, and must be at least 20 years old. The DTV is unusual in being open not only to remote workers, but anyone who wants to discover Thai culture. What could that look like? Anything from taking cooking courses to learning traditional Thai boxing.
What is the minimum income for a digital nomad visa in Thailand?
The new visa does not yet set a minimum income. Up until now, remote workers who wanted to stay in Thailand long-term had to meet a minimum income of $80,000 each year. The new policy will open up the visa to those who can prove they have savings of $13,600.
What are the other requirements?
Applicants cannot work for a company based in Thailand and must pay an application fee of $270.
How to apply to be a digital nomad in Thailand?
Depending on your present passport and location, you may be able to apply through the official e-visa website.
21. How long can digital nomads with the DTV stay in Thailand at a time?
A. 60 days. B. 180 days. C. 1 year. D. 5 years.
22. What is the expected benefit of the DTV?
A. To drive local development. B. To aid technological progress.
C. To reduce average living costs. D. To cooperate with nearby nations.
23. What is special about the new visa application?
A. It requires a certain minimum income. B. It calls for a role at a Thai company.
C. It is also open to cultural learners. D. It is free for long-term workers.

Farmers are celebrating their rice harvest by singing and dancing on the farm. This is Wanbao Mozambique rice farm, China’s largest rice planting project in Africa. Here, if people can speak hello in Chinese, “ni hao”, they most certainly also know another Chinese term Wanbao, the name of a Chinese rice farm project.
Through the fertile (肥沃的) area in south Mozambique, the Limpopo River is flowing into the Indian Ocean in the Xai-Xai district. Benefiting from the vast farmland, a suitable climate, enough water and the support from China, the project is creating a bright future for the people here.
Through cooperative planting methods, Wanbao is helping the local farmers develop successful rice plantations. It not only provides seeds, farm chemicals and fertilizers, but also does land leveling and water pumping (抽水).
To have good harvests, farmers work hard and learn from the Chinese. Now the local farmers’ love for farming is growing and they are getting richer and richer.
“I’ve benefited a lot from the rice farming and learned to produce rice using Chinese technologies on one hectare (公顷) of land,” says a mother of five children. “With the money, I have improved my life a lot. I have built my house and my children are going to school.”
An old farmer is now even teaching other farmers how to grow rice. He is cultivating crops over 40 hectares. “Thanks to the project, both my children and grandchildren are living a stable life. Now I go to the fields to support the other farmers with teaching. I hope Wanbao will extend the growing areas to other corners of the county in the future to help fight poverty,” he says.
24. Why does the author mention “ni hao” in the first paragraph?
A. To show the popularity of the project in Mozambique.
B. To indicate farmers’ Chinese language skills.
C. To prove the importance of Chinese in Mozambique.
D. To suggest Chinese is a requirement for working on the farm.
25. What can we know about the Wanbao project?
A. It plants trees in urban areas. B. It teaches locals Chinese.
C. It improves the local climate. D. It offers farming technologies for locals.
26. What does the underlined word “cultivating” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Preparing. B. Growing. C. Selling. D. Pulling.
27. In which section of a website is the text likely to be found?
A. Travel. B. Education. C. Agriculture. D. Art.

Pet and animal-related apps are creating cybersecurity risks to their owners, new research has shown. While being able to keep track of your cat and dog may be an attractive benefit to many pet owners as it can provide peace of mind, allowing a third party to track your movements may be much less attractive.
Computer scientists at Newcastle University and Royal Holloway, University of London have exposed multiple security and privacy issues by evaluating 40 popular Android apps for pets. The results show that several of these apps are putting their users at risk by exposing their login or location details.
Password vulnerability (漏洞) was one of the areas exposed by the team. They identified three applications that had the user’s login details visible in plain text within non-secure HTTP traffic. This means that anyone is able to observe the internet traffic of someone using one of these apps and will be able to find out their login information. In addition to login information, two of the apps also showed user details, such as their location that may enable someone to gain access to their devices and risk a cyber-attack.
Another area of concern identified in the study was the use of trackers. All but four of the applications were found to feature some form of tracking software. A tracker gathers information on the person using the application, on how they use it, or on the smartphone being used.
Scott Harper is a PhD student at Newcastle University’s School of Computing and the lead author of the study. He said: “Pet tech such as smart collars and GPS trackers for your cat or dog, is a rapidly growing industry and it brings with it new security, privacy, and safety risks to the pet owners. We would urge anyone using these apps to take the time to ensure they are using a unique password, check the settings and ensure that they consider how much data they are sharing or willing to share.”
28. What’s the function of the first paragraph?
A. To display the benefits of pet tracking.
B. To introduce pet and animal-related apps.
C. To show the evidence of cybersecurity risks.
D. To raise the topic by giving research findings.
29. What’s the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. The threat of a cyber-attack.
B. The operation of HTTP traffic.
C. The access to login information.
D. The potential risks in password security.
30. What attitude should we hold while using pet tech according to Scott Harper?
A. Flexible. B. Determined. C. Cautious. D. Casual.
31. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Are Our Pets Leaking Information about Us?
B. How Can We Observe the Internet Traffic?
C. What Does Tracking Software Bring Us?
D. Are We Safe to Use Android Apps?
【答案】28. D 29. D 30. C 31. A

Each of us individually is the accumulated (积累) product of thousands of generations that have come before us in an unbroken line. Our culture and technology today are also the result of thousands of years of accumulated and remixed cultural knowledge. Cumulative culture allowed humans to adapt to a diversity of environments and challenges. But, it is unclear when cumulative culture first developed during ancient human evolution.
“Our earliest ancestors have been successful at adapting to ecological conditions that require different kinds of problems to be solved,” said Perreault, an associate professor with the School of Human Evolution and Social Change. “Cumulative culture is key because it allows human populations to build on and recombine the solutions of prior generations and to develop new complex solutions to problems very quickly.”
As a baseline for the complexity of stone tool technologies achievable without cumulative culture, Perreault analyzed technologies used by chimpanzees (黑猩猩). He then analyzed changes in the complexity of stone tool-making techniques across the past 3.3 million years of the archaeological record to explore the origin of cumulative culture. He broke down the complexity of the stone tool technologies by the number of steps that each tool-making sequence (序列) involved.
The results suggested that from around 3.3 to 1.8 million years ago stone tool-making sequences remained within the range of the baselines. From around 1.8 million to 600,000 years ago, making sequences began to slightly top the complexity baseline. But, after around 600,000 years ago, the complexity of making sequences rapidly increased. “By 600,000 years ago or so, ancient human populations started relying on unusually complex technologies, and we only see rapid increases in complexity after that time as well,” said Perreault.
Tool-assisted food-hunting may have been the motive for the earliest beginning of the evolution of cumulative culture. Early ancient humans, 3.4 to 2 million years ago, likely relied on strategies that require tools - like accessing meat and organs - leading to changes in brain size, lifetime and biology that set the stage for cumulative culture.
32. What does cumulative culture refer to according to the text?
A. Emphasizing individual development.
B. Paying attention to reforming social structure.
C. Adapting to a changing living condition step by step.
D. Building up technological improvements over generations.
33. What’s Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. How Perreault conducted the research. B. How important stone tool technologies were.
C. What the baseline of cumulative culture was. D. Why Perreault chose chimpanzees for the study.
34. What happened by 600,000 years ago?
A. Tool-making sequences remained unchanged.
B. The population of the earth increased sharply.
C. The ancestors began to make stone tools.
D. The technology reached a turning point.
35. Why are strategies that require tools mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To show the result of human brains’ changes.
B. To illustrate the motive of cumulative culture.
C. To indicate the significance of common culture.
D. To stress the eating habits of human ancestors.
【答案】32. D 33. A 34. D 35. B

Everyone is faced with problems at some point or the other. ____36____ The problems, however, become different when past strategies do not work and there is no obvious solution. This can cause anxiety and stress. However, all you need to do is remain calm and use a new, different method. Here are some easy ways to solve problems.
Acknowledge that there is a problem. Many people refuse to acknowledge that there is a problem. They continue thinking everything will disappear on its own, so they fail to seek timely help. This does not help the situation in any way. ____37____
Keep a journal. Keeping a daily journal is the best way to solve deeper problems that may be affecting your peace of mind. ____38____ Sometimes, just by writing down issues, you might get to see that a problem isn’t as big as you are thinking.
____39____ Often, to solve a problem, you need to test your limits. You may have to take on certain challenges including learning something new to improve yourself. If you continue thinking of the problem as a threat and view yourself as a failure or a weak person, you will not be able to deal with the problem. Nevertheless, if you can see some benefits coming out of the problem, you will be in a better position to accept the challenge and learn something new.
Seek help. ____40____ If you are still unable to solve the issue despite giving it much thought and attention, seek help from friends, colleagues, family or even professionals.
A. Challenge yourself.
B. Set achievable goals.
C. Instead, it can make the problem bigger than before.
D So write down all the problems you are facing right now.
E. Sometimes, certain problems can’t be solved on your own.

【37题详解】
空处位于段末应承接上文。空格前说“They continue thinking everything will disappear on its own, so they fail to seek timely help. 【38题详解】
空格前说“Keeping a daily journal is the best way to solve deeper problems that may be affecting your peace of mind.(每天写日记是解决可能影响你内心平静的深层次问题的最好方法)”,空格后说“Sometimes, just by writing down issues, you might get to see that a problem isn’t as big as you are thinking.(有时候,仅仅通过写下问题,你可能会发现问题并不像你想的那么大)”,因此空格处也应讲“写”方面的事情,D选项“So write down all the problems you are facing right now.(所以写下你现在面临的所有问题)”讲的是写下问题,和空格前后内容相呼应,因此D选项承上启下,符合语境,故选D。

空格处是本段的主题句,由空格后的“Often, to solve a problem, you need to test your limits. You may have to take on certain challenges including learning something new to improve yourself.(通常,为了解决一个问题,你需要测试你的极限。你可能需要接受一些挑战,包括学习一些新的东西来提高自己)”可知,本段主要讲的是要挑战自己,A选项“Challenge yourself.(挑战自己)”概括本段内容,可作为主题句,故选A。
【40题详解】
本段主题句是“Seek help.(寻求帮助)”,空格后说“If you are still unable to solve the issue despite giving it much thought and attention, seek help from friends, colleagues, family or even professionals.(如果你花了很多心思和精力还是无法解决问题,那就向朋友、同事、家人甚至专业人士寻求帮助)”,因此空格处应说有的问题是靠自己解决不了的,E选项“Sometimes, certain problems can’t be solved on your own.(有时候,有些问题不能靠你自己解决)”说明了有的问题不能自己解决,和空格前后内容相互呼应,因此E选项开启下文,符合语境,故选E。

第二节 (满分 25分)
72. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Jack was a promising graphic artist (平面造型艺术家). He’d been searching for a suitable job for a long time. He failed many times; though he was a bit upset, he didn’t give up sending out his resumes. One day he received a phone call, telling him about an opening for a graphic artist at a company in Manchester and asking him to attend the interview on Friday. Hearing this, Jack was really excited. He spent a large amount of time making preparations, including brushing up on his graphic skills and carrying out research on the company online, and finally booked a coach ticket to Manchester.
On Thursday afternoon, Jack boarded the coach. The passenger next to him was a young man. They had a delightful conversation, and Jack discovered that his fellow passenger, named John, was also a graphic artist living in the city. Upon reaching their destination, they stayed in the same hotel and continued their lively discussion late into the night. Their topics were related to their major and interests. Generally, they had a lot in common, and naturally, they became friends. Most importantly, John gave him a lot of advice on his interview. Jack was impressed by John’s professional knowledge. The next day, they exchanged contact information before they parted.
To Jack’s surprise, he came across John at the company. John greeted him with a smile and said, “I didn’t want the thought of competing against you to ruin our trip because they need only one graphic artist. Therefore, I didn’t mention that I would come for an interview at the company, or else, we couldn’t have had enjoyable chats.” He continued, “Anyway, I wish you good luck today.”
What John said touched Jack deeply. “Thank you, John! All the best!” said Jack. Half an hour later, John left, while Jack was told to stay there a little longer.
Paragraph 1:
Due to his full preparations, Jack finished his interview smoothly.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Hearing that Jack had got the job, John congratulated him sincerely over the phone.

Due to his full preparations, Jack finished his interview smoothly. The interviewers were impressed by his detailed knowledge about the company and the job. As he walked out of the office, Jack felt a wave of relief and excitement. Later that afternoon, he received a call offering him the position. Overjoyed, he immediately called his family to share the good news. Then, with mixed feelings, he called his new friend John and thanked him for his advice and invaluable support. Deep inside, Jack wanted to do something to support John.
Paragraph 2:
Hearing that Jack had got the job, John congratulated him sincerely over the phone. He expressed great admiration for Jack’s ability, stressing how his talent had finally been recognized. Then John said he would attend an interview at another company. Jack was truly excited. Knowing firsthand the challenges that came with job-hunting, he instructed John to make careful preparations and practice some interview questions. With Jack’s help, John felt more confident about his upcoming interview. Their friendship turned into a supportive partnership, each willing to see the other succeed.

A It plants trees in urban areas.

29 What’s the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. The threat of a cyber-attack.
B The operation of HTTP traffic.
D
The results suggested that from around 3.3 to 1.8 million years ago, stone tool-making sequences remained within the range of the baselines.
