Nobody laughed when the UK comedy show Little Britain toured the US. Americans didn’t find the “British stereotypes (刻板印象)” funny. One character was a woman who was sick whenever she saw a foreigner. Another was a loud and rude 15-year-old girl cursing (咒骂) her teachers. But back home, British people were roaring, thinking, “Yes! That’s exactly what we’re like!”
A laugh is a laugh in any language, but the reasons for it can be very different. Britons and Americans speak the same language, but humor does not always translate. Take The Office as an example. This was originally a UK TV series but it was changed for the US. Both the US and UK series are set in a boring workplace in a boring town. But David Brent, the boss of the UK office, is not a nice guy like Michael Scott in the US version. “We had to make Michael Scott a slightly nicer guy,” wrote series creator Ricky Gervais. “He couldn’t be too mean.”
Gervais said British people are different from Americans because Britons cruelly make fun of people they like or dislike and of themselves. He believes the differences between the American and British senses of humor are because of “our upbringing”. “Americans are brought up to believe they can be the next president of the United States,” he wrote. “Britons are told, ‘It won’t happen to you’.”
Things usually turn out fine at the end of every American The Office episode (集). Even if they’re not perfect, the characters “learn a lesson” for the future. But in David Brent’s office — and in lots of UK comedies — the last scene is often sad. You are often left with the feeling that things just couldn’t get worse. For British people, this seems true to life and so much funnier. It’s not just Britain and the US that have comic differences. Few foreigners would understand a Chinese cross-talk show for example.
Cultural differences are no laughing matter. But comic differences can be a window into a culture.
36. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To show that British humor is not funny at all.
B. To show that Britain and America have different stereotypes.
C. To show that American people don’t understand British people.
D. To show that humor may mean different things in different cultures.
37. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article?
A. David Brent is quite a nice guy.
B. Michael Scott is a rather mean guy.
C. Episodes in the US version often end in a boring way.
D. Episodes in the UK version often end with a hopeless note.
38. Why was Michael Scott from the US version of The Office made “slightly nicer” than the UK version’s David Brent?
A. To agree with the American workplace environment.
B. Because Americans need a more gentle sense of humor.
C. Because Ricky Gervais believes people are kind by nature.
D. To make the character more acceptable to American viewers.
39. Why is it hard for foreigners to understand Chinese cross-talk?
A. They don’t understand the language.
B. The talking is too fast for them to follow.
C. The jokes are about Chinese culture and wordplay.
D. Chinese humor is very different from Western humor.
40 What is the author’s opinion of comic differences?
A. They can partly show cultural differences.
B. They show stereotypes of different cultures.
C. They are slight differences that can be ignored.
D. They help people communicate with each other.

Some people find reality TV entertaining, but others think it’s over the top.
What you need to know
● Reality TV shows are typically shows that do not have written scripts and star regular people instead of professional actors.
● One report found that nearly half of all TV shows watched in the US are reality shows.
● Reality television shows are cheaper to produce than traditional scripted TV shows.
● A recent study found that in 2024, 33% of Americans ages l8 to 29 watch reality TV.
There are so many kinds of reality TV shows from competitions like The Great British Baking Show and Project Runway to business programs like Shark Tank to animal shows like The Dog Whisperer. The genre first came to us audiences in the 1990s and skyrocketed in popularity in the 2000s. Today, reality TV is a multibillion-dollar industry and a major part of popular culture. Some people say there are too many shows, though, and complain that they feature fake or exaggerated (夸大) storylines and situations in an effort to win audiences. Other people think they’re still entertaining. What do you think? Has reality television gone too far?
Yes — it’s just so fake
There’s nothing real about reality television. These shows may not have actors or scripts, but they’re still fake—so what’s the point in watching? Many shows place an unhealthy emphasis (强调的) on money and beauty, which makes viewers feel bad about their own lives and can harm their mental health. Competition shows can also promote (促进) the idea that it’s OK to do anything in order to win, which is a terrible lesson for viewers. Finally, it’s no fun to turn everyday hobbies like baking or crafting into competitions. People should enjoy those hobbies for the sake of doing them, not so they can win a contest or get on television.
No — it’s all in good fun
Reality TV is harmless entertainment that viewers know isn’t “real.” It still gives people something to bond (与……紧密联系) over when they talk about the latest episode or host watch parties. There are plenty of reality shows that are good-natured and not mean. Even competition programs can teach viewers that getting ahead often involves hard work, discipline (自律), and sticking to a goal. Reality shows can also demonstrate (证明) the value of teamwork and cooperation. Finally, reality shows like kids’ baking or crafting competitions can give participants a creative outlet and inspire viewers to take up a new hobby or find a new passion.

It was raining heavily, and Karthik was alone at home. The sound of thunder was so loud that it felt like the gods were fighting in the sky. This scared him a little, so he took his favorite novel, Harry Potter, from the bookshelf.

He looked at the wall clock—it was only ten minutes past three. Usually, they got home after six in the afternoon. The doorbell sounded again. “Who’s there?” he shouted. There was no reply. The doorbell sounded again. He remembered his parents telling him not to open the door without checking who it is.

The policeman slowly walked along the street. It was exactly ten o’clock at night. The wind and light rain had kept most people at home.
Halfway down the street, the policeman saw a man leaning against a door, with an unlighted cigar in his mouth. As the policeman walked up to him, the man spoke quickly. “It’s all right, officer,” he said. “I’m just waiting here for an old friend. It’s an appointment that was made twenty years ago. You think it funny to plan a meeting like this, don’t you?”
The man lit his cigar. The light showed a pale, square-jawed face with keen eyes. He was very well-dressed.
“Twenty years ago tonight,” the man went on, “I dined at a restaurant nearby with my friend Jimmy Wells. I was going to the West to try my luck; but Jimmy wanted to stay. We agreed to meet here again exactly twenty years from that date and time. That’s why I’m here.”
“What happened to your friend?” asked the policeman.
“I’m not sure,” said the man. “We wrote to each other for a while and then stopped. But I’m sure if he is alive, he will keep his promise. We said we would meet at ten o’clock.”
“OK, I’ll be on my way. Good night.”
The policeman continued on his way; Bob waited about twenty minutes. Then, a tall man went straight to the waiting man.
“Is that you, Bob?” asked the newcomer.
“Is that you, Jimmy?” cried the man in the door. “You’ve grown so tall. Let me have a good look at you. You don’t look anything like Jimmy.”
“You’re right,” said the tall man. “I’m a police officer. You are wanted by the New York police. But, before we go to the police station, here’s a note from your friend Jimmy Wells.”
Bob opened the small piece of paper. His hands shook as he read.
Bob
I was on my way to meet you as we had planed. However, when you lit your ciagar, I saw it was the face of a man that is wanted by the police. Somehow, I couldn’t do it myself. So, I sent another police officer to do the job.

40. What is the author’s opinion of comic differences?
A. They can partly show cultural differences.
B. They show stereotypes of different cultures.
C. They are slight differences that can be ignored.
D. They help people communicate with each other.
