4 places for the Best Easter Holidays
When the kids break up from school it can be difficult to choose what to do to keep them entertained and make the most of family time. With the Easter Holidays just around the corner, here are four different places to inspire you to make the most of the break, whatever your age…
Bristol
Travel to the southwest to explore busy Bristol. It has got more than enough to keep the whole family entertained no matter what they like to get up to. The iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge boasts some of the best views in Bristol. There are also fascinating museums, amazing parks for picnics and games, and even a surf centre nearby.
York
York is the perfect Easter Holiday destination. Going with grandparents, they’ll love stopping for an afternoon tea at one of the many historic hotels. Marvel at the majesty of York Minister and the medieval city walls. Or learn about the diverse history of this amazing city at one of the museums, from its start as a Roman settlement, through the Viking ages as Jorvik, to its current day.
Caernarfon Castle
This magnificent fortress was built on the Welsh coastline in the 13th century. Caernarfon Castle is a historic paradise for children, alive with towers to climb, city walls to march along, and (with imagination) princes and princesses to rescue.
Dunham Massey Deer Park
Located in Cheshire, Dunham Massey Deer Park is the ideal spot for a walk on the wild side. Deer isn’t the only animal attraction here. From owls and woodpeckers to bats and rare species of beetles, there are loads to keep people of all ages fascinated. You can even bring the family dog, as long as they’re kept on a lead.

I was on one of my usual group bike rides on a quiet country road in Santa Barbara, riding with about 30 other road cyclists, when a car tried to change direction suddenly to avoid a runner. From what I’ve been told, the driver moved around us so fast that he lost country of his car and hit me.
I don’t remember any of this because I was thrown off my bike and directly into a tree. I had a serious brain bleed (出血) — despite the fact that I was wearing my helmet. I also broke a number of bones. Luckily, with good treatment I survived.
That accident happened four years ago. Because of my brain injury, I had to stay off my bike for a year because if I fell and again got my head hurt, it would be worse. To get back on my bike, I started running. I was still in a lot of pain, but I was determined. Nobody was going to hit me, change my life and then keep me from doing what I like at some point.
A year after my accident, I finally got back on my bike. But it had left an influence on me. If there are cars behind me, I will feel strained. However, I still ride.
Before my accident, I never raced. Now I’m faster than ever. One reason is that I have lost about 30 pounds. When I got hit, I weighed 205 pounds. After six weeks of being on a feeding tube (饲管), I walked out of the hospital at 175 pounds, and I’ve stayed around that number ever since. I also think I’m faster because my accident lifted my competitive spirit. Since my accident, I’ve loved bike racing.
At the end of the day, I wanted to prove to myself that I could get back to doing what I loved — and I did that.
24.What do we know about the accident?
A.It led to the driver’s heavy bleeding. B.It caused several cyclists to hit trees.
C.It was worsened by the lack of a helmet. D.It resulted in serious injuries to the author.
25.Why did the author begin to run?
A.To reduce his pain. B.To kill his leisure time.
C.To prepare for cycling. D.To develop his determination.
26.What does the underlined word “strained” mean in Paragraph 4?
A.Nervous. B.Excited. C.Curious. D.Relaxed.
27.What caused the author to lose 30 pounds?
A.His competing in races. B.His staying at the hospital.
C.His being on a no-dinner diet for long. D.His running long distances every day.
C
Of all the ways to define (定义) a challenge, the simplest works best: a call for special effort. It applies to everyone. It’s not enough to say that skiing a black diamond is a challenge; or that snowshoeing a 10-kilometr e route is a challenge. For some, neither may be. For others, both are unimaginable.
A call for special effort means only you know when you’re being challenged. If you’re red-faced and out of breath, it’s probably a challenge. If you have to focus and work hard to complete the task, consider yourself challenged.
This season, we sourced 10 of the most exciting winter challenges around Canada. Sure, there are some that even the writer has no intention of trying, but they all excite the imagination. They’re all about inspiring outdoor experiences at ExploreTM. We encourage adaptation as well as adoption.
When you read the feature (专栏) on page 28, you may give up the 6633 Arctic Ultra as well as the Ice Mile—but the Wapta Traverse, the famous Rocky Mountain ski tour, or the Pentathlon des Neiges, in Quebec City, may fit the bill nicely. Or maybe it’s a day-tour in the Rockies and sampling just one of the Pentathlon sports in a more relaxed setting. It’s up to you.
We wrote this article because we want you to see the possibility of winter: to look beyond a simple, though satisfying, day on the ski hill or skate on a nearby lake; to see winter as every bit as colorful as summer.
28.What does the writer think is the best way to define a challenge?
A.Skiing a black diamond. B.A call for special effort.
C.Applying it to everyone. D.Snowshoeing a challenging route.
29.How does the writer feel about the 10 winter challenges around Canada in Paragraph 3?
A.They are worth trying. B.They are the most challenging.
C.They are suitable for the writer. D.They fail to fire the imagination.
30.Which of the following will the writer avoid recommending?
A.The Ice Mile. B.The Wapta Traverse.
C.The Pentathlon des Neiges. D.The Rocky Mountain ski tour.
31.What is the purpose of writing this article?
A.To define a challenge. B.To introduce Canada’s sights.
C.To praise adventurous tourists. D.To encourage exploring winter challenges.

Swimming is well known to offer many health benefits, including building endurance and muscle strength. But what about swimming in icy cold water? This might not sound very appealing, but there’s evidence that it can actually be good for us.
Cold-water swimming is also called wild swimming, where people swim in natural bodies of water such as ponds, rivers, and the sea. Although jumping in might give a quick shock to the body, many enthusiasts claim they get used to it over time. In fact, research has found it to have many physical and mental benefits.
Apart from being a great way to exercise, spending time in the outdoors and near water can improve overall wellbeing. There’s plenty of anecdotal (传闻的) evidence suggesting that cold-water swimming has cured people’s illness, ranging from pain relief to an overall sense of feeling amazed.
One reason why getting into cold water might be beneficial is that it causes a stress response in the body. The more people do it, the better their reaction to stress becomes. Additionally, some experts believe that cold-water swimming helps the body prepare for other forms of stress by adapting to similar stressors. For example, it also helps reduce the stress of exercising at high altitudes.
People who want to try cold-water swimming should approach it with caution, swim with a friend if possible, and start during the summer when the temperatures are warmer. It might not be for everyone, but for those willing to take risks, the extra health benefits might be worth it.
32.What are some physical benefits of cold-water swimming?
A.Building endurance and muscle strength.
B.Greater lung capacity and building endurance.
C.Improved joint mobility and muscle strength.
D.Increased muscle flexibility and greater lung capacity.
33.What is the anecdotal evidence about cold-water swimming?
A.It has been proven to cure many illnesses.
B.It can be dangerous and should not be attempted.
C.People feel amazed after doing cold-water swimming.
D.Doctors recommend cold-water swimming for everyone.
34.Based on the experts’ opinion, what do cold-water swimming help the body prepare for?
A.Increasing lung capacity. B.Reducing inflammation.
C.Adapting to similar stressors. D.Building muscle strength.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Health Benefits of Swimming.
B.The Benefits of Cold Water Swimming.
C.How Cold Water Swimming Makes You Healthy.
D.Why Cold Water Swimming Helps Reduce the Stress.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Reading is essential but how can one choose the right books to read and where can one find them? A few famous people may give you some helpful tips.
● Read books from past eras.
36 Otherwise, you’d be “completely dependent on the prejudices and fashions of your times,” just as Albert Einstein put it. “Somebody who reads only newspapers and books of contemporary authors looks to me like an extremely near-sighted person who dislikes eyeglasses,” he said.
● 37
Reading too wide a variety in too short a time would keep the teachings from leaving a lasting impression on you. Seneca the Younger, a first-century Roman philosopher, suggested that “you must linger (流连) among a limited number of master thinkers, and digest their works, if you would obtain ideas which shall win firm hold in your mind.”
● Shop at secondhand bookstores.
Virginia Woolf believed the works in secondhand bookstores have an attraction which the usual volumes of the library lack. Browsing through these books gives you the chance to run into something that wouldn’t have risen to the attention of librarians and booksellers. 38
● Check out authors’ reading lists.
In his 1940 guide How to Read a Book, American philosopher Mortimer J. Adler talked about how to choose books. He attached importance to those that other authors consider worth reading. 39 Mortimer wrote that “one way to understand them is to read the books they read.”
● Make the final decision by yourself.
40 It’s you yourself who should choose what, how and when to read. Theodore Roosevelt recommended choosing books on subjects that interest you and letting your mood guide you to your next great read.
A.Interest is the best teacher.
B.Great authors are great readers.
C.Leave some room for older works.
D.Learn more about those great authors.
E.Don’t jump too quickly from book to book.
F.There’s no “best books” list that everyone should follow.
G.Usually they are much more selective in organizing their collections.

第二节(满分25分)
67.阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
We’ve been having a heat wave on the East Coast this summer, along with the rest of the U.S. So the very thing you wouldn’t want to do is sleep in a hot car! That’s what I thought when I saw a woman doing just that.
Well, she wasn’t asleep at the time, but I guessed that was her difficulty when I noticed that the inside of the car was piled high with her belongings from the passenger seat to the back seats. I’d been noticing this car parked in the same space on this quiet lot for a few weeks.
I finally went over to the car and asked if I could get her something from the nearby store. She refused but at least I got a look close enough to see that she was normal, not on drugs, spoke English and was not in any immediate suffering despite how it looked. This made me all the more curios. The woman said her name was Justine. As we talked, darkness began to set in, so I told her I had to leave, thinking I’d return another day. Then I started for home.
A week later, I was back shopping at a store near the lot and there was Justine in that car on a hot day! I had had enough. I went over to the car, hoping to hear her story. That’s the way everyone would do. It’s what all kind people should do. But I wonder how many persons would have simply passed by without stopping. I was there to help, not to judge or criticize (批评).
What if we all try our best to help people in trouble? How much better would this world be? How many more good activities than bad would make paper headlines? There would be so many acts of kindness, and the media would have no choice but to switch the focus from the bad to the good. I decided to be such a good person.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
My concern touched Justine and she told me about her troubles.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I wanted to help her find a job to build up her confidence in life.

【原文】W: We won’t know what the future house will look like, but we can imagine three kinds of houses. The first one is the tree house. The root of the house is deep under the ground. It uses the soil to control the home’s temperature. The second one is the lizard home. Like a lizard, changing colors with the weather is the most important design of a lizard house. When it’s in the bright sun, the cover of the house will turn dark to protect it from strong heat. During the dark days, it turns white and takes in as much light and heat as possible to produce energy. The last one is the chimney house. In such a house, a chimney can be a useful air conditioner because it is easier for hot air to flow out of the chimney.

67. My concern touched Justine and she told me about her troubles. Then she told me that she was an painter. I learned that she was devoted to painting and had a successful personal art exhibition one year ago. Unfortunately, her studio caught fire a year ago, which almost destroyed everything and her hand was injured. Then, she couldn’t find inspiration for her paintings and has become less and less confident. So she took her luggage and began to travel around the country to forget the pain.
I wanted to help her find a job to build up her confidence in life. I suddenly remembered a painting dealer, who opened an art gallery. Maybe he could use a painter like Justine there. That’s why I called him and told him about the story of Justine. To my delight, when he finished reading Justin’s paintings, he agreed to invite Justin to work in his gallery. Looking at Justin’s satisfied smile and tears, I knew my kindness was rewarded. A small act of kindness and concern for others is enough to make a difference in someone’s life.
