Following traditional expectations, my parents believed I was destined (注定的) to be the next Yo-Yo Ma. To deviate (偏离) from set cultural expectations was an unthinkable cruel act that would not only lead to financial instability but also mean that the deviant wasn’t using his ability to his full potential.
In my fourth grade, I started playing the violin. I found comfort not in playing music, but in writing short stories and poetry. However, the shame of having an interest in liberal arts (文科), together with the fear of disappointing my parents, prevented me from expressing my passion for writing to my parents. I aimed to never express my desire to quit music, but my ranking as the worst violinist in my school band was all that needed to be told to my parents. After every long and boring class on my musical incompetence, I would find a way to release my emotions. Instead of sharing my problems with my friends or brothers, with a flashlight in one hand and a pen in the other, I conducted my writing sessions under my quilt secretly after my parents were asleep. Doing that really soothed my anxiety.
I had thought my parents would control my future. Actually, my unreasonable thinking did. I thought my advisor and parents might have ill intentions, but that was not the case. Sure, my parents encouraged my music career, but all they expected was that I could find my passion.
When I told my parents about quitting music for journalism, though they felt it was a pity, they showed support for my writing interest. And as I type this conclusion, I’m reminded of how similar this is to my once routine of late-night writing sessions. However, this time, I’m not in hiding.
4. What can we know about the author in his fourth grade?
A. He started learning to write poetry.
B. He nearly gave up writing short stories.
C. He struggled with his music lessons.
D. He felt it a shame to join the school band.
5. What does the underlined word “soothed” in Paragraph 2 mean most probably?
A. Reflected. B. Described. C. Worsened. D. Relieved.
6. What was the reaction of the author’s parents to his decision?
A. They found it unwise. B. They were ashamed of that.
C. They tried to hide its ill effects. D. They considered it understandable.
7. What does the author want to convey through his experience?
A. We should follow our hearts bravely.
B. We should not think nothing of liberal arts.
C. We should meet our parents’ expectations.
D. We should not give up halfway easily.

There was once a sea turtle and a seal at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, DC. But unlike the zoo’s other residents, they were made entirely out of plastic trash collected from the ocean. These giant sculptures, along with 14 others, were part of a traveling exhibition called “Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea”.
The Washed Ashore project, led by artist Angela Haseltine Pozzi, was aimed at making people know how seriously the oceans had been polluted. According to the National Zoo, more than 315 billion pounds of plastics litter the world’s oceans today. Most of these plastics are garbage from towns and cities, as well as trash that people leave on beaches. Rainwater, winds, and high tides bring the trash into the ocean or into rivers that lead to the ocean. Once they are under the waves, the plastics begin to break up into smaller and smaller pieces.
Thousands of marine animals — including whales, sea turtles, and fish — die each year from eating or getting tangled (缠结的) in plastic bags and other items. Plastic pieces can also injure coral and kill seagrass. Each year, millions of pounds of plastics end up in the ocean. A recent study by the World Economic Forum and Ellen MacArthur Foundation finds that if that continues, by 2050 the total weight of plastics in the ocean will have been more than the combined weight of all the fish in the ocean.
The artworks on display included a 20-foot-long coral reef, a 12-foot-long shark, and a 16-foot-long parrotfish. Each one was made of hundreds of pieces of trash like water bottles and sunglasses. “These sculptures are a powerful reminder of our personal role and global responsibility for preserving biodiversity on land and in the sea,”said Dennis Kelly, a director of the National Zoo.
8. What’s special about the turtle and the seal displayed at the zoo?
A. They have been put on the endangered list.
B. They’re native residents of the deep sea.
C. They can help deal with the plastics in the ocean.
D. They’re artworks made of the plastics from the ocean.
9. What was the purpose of the Washed Ashore project?
A. To show the beauty of ocean creatures.
B. To raise awareness about the ocean pollution.
C. To attract visitors to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo.
D. To appeal to volunteers to help clean the trash in the ocean.
10. What can we infer about the plastics in the ocean from Paragraphs 2 and 3?
A. They will threaten marine life more seriously in the near future.
B. They are mainly from undersea adventures.
C. They do little harm to coral and seagrass.
D. They are impossible to clear away.
11. What did Dennis Kelly want to convey through the words in the last paragraph?
A. Each individual should take action to protect the environment.
B. People’s efforts to protect biodiversity have paid off.
C. Sculptures of marine animals are popular in the world.
D. People’s awareness of recycling waste is increasing.
D
Stories have long been employed to instill (灌输) moral and cultural values in young children, but there is little research exploring the effectiveness of such stories.
“As parents, we want to know how effective the stories actually are in promoting honesty.” said lead author Kang Lee of the Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study at the University of Toronto and co-author Victoria Talwar of McGill University. “Is it ‘in one ear, out the other,’ or do children listen and take the messages to heart?”
To find out, Lee and Talwar conducted an experiment with 268 children aged 3 to 7. Each child played a game that required guessing the identity of a toy based on the sound it made. In the middle of the game, the experimenter left the room for a minute, instructing the child not to glance at a toy left on the table. For most children, this temptation (诱惑) was too hard to resist. When the experimenter returned, she read the child a story, either The Tortoise and the Hare, The Boy Who Cried Wolf, Pinocchio, or George Washington and the Cherry Tree. Afterward, the experimenter asked the child to tell the truth about whether he or she glanced at the toy.
Contrary to the experimenters’ expectations, Pinocchio and The Boy Who Cried Wolf ,which associate lying with negative consequences, were no more effective at promoting honest behavior than a fable unrelated to honesty, in this case The Tortoise and the Hare. Only the made-up tale about young George Washington seemed to inspire the kids to admit glancing: Children who heard the tale in which the future first president was complimented because of admitting his mistake and rewarded a candy were three times more likely to tell the truth than their fellows who heard other stories.
“Our study shows that to promote moral behavior such as honesty, emphasizing the positive outcomes of honesty rather than the negative consequences of dishonesty is the key,” note they. “This may apply to other moral behaviors as well.”
They also warn that more research is necessary to determine whether moral stories influence kids’ behavior in the long term. Still, they have been quick to take advantage of the findings. Talwar reports a shift in her own parenting practices: “It really seems to work. I use this now with my child.”
12. What is the aim of the experiment mentioned in the text?
A. To find out which story is instructive at school.
B. To make sure if the children can resist the temptation.
C. To see the effectiveness of stories in promoting honesty.
D. To ensure the precision in guessing the identity of the toy.
13. What does the underlined word “complimented” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. criticized. B. praised.
C. ignored. D. respected.
14. What does Talwar mean in the last paragraph?
A. She will apply the finding to her child.
B. Her child shows a strong interest in the story.
C. Her parents have changed their way of education.
D. She notices the positive influence on her child.
15. Which word can describe the author’s attitude in the text?
A. Unclear. B. Favorable.
C. Sympathetic. D. Objective.

So it is especially loved and used by athletes.
___18___ Some say the Eskimos were the first to develop an initial trampoline through the animal skin. Others say the English were the first inventors. They reportedly used blankets to throw people up into the air and catch them. People have different opinions on the true first inventors of the trampoline for there’s scientific evidence to back up both statements.
On the other hand, a circus-related story goes that the trampoline was first developed in the 1800s by a circus artist called Du Trampolin. He was said to shape a safety net into an early form of trampoline and use it in the circus.____19____ But there’s indeed evidence that later a form of trampoline was seen in use in the circus.
George Nissen and Larry Griswold are usually credited with inventing the first truly modern trampoline in 1935.____20____ They can even be found in people’s yards. Such equipment brings people much fun.

On Christmas Eve, after we hung lights and decorations, our two children were jumping with excitement for the next morning. My husband and I smiled, but those smiles hid our guilt. Our family had struggled financially. We’d cut back on family vacations and extra spending, but we were still behind other families. It was hard not to feel like a failure when we couldn’t give our children the things they deserved. Many other families could purchase great gifts for kids during shopping trips. But we couldn’t.
We put our children to bed that night and read stories aloud as we always did before they fell asleep. As we headed towards the bed, we heard a soft knock on the door. I looked out of the window and my husband stood near. It was late. I was a little nervous as I opened the door. The ground was blanketed with a thin layer of snow. Tiny, delicate pieces of snow were floating down from the night sky and landing gently. The air was fresh, and the moon shone on the trees in the backyard. And the holiday lights created a colorful scene.
I didn’t see anything right away, so I stepped out. Beside our car sat two new child-sized sleds (雪橇). My hands met my mouth, and tears instantly welled up in my eyes. My husband and I walked out of our yard to figure out who sent us the gifts. There was no one, and no sound — only footprints that disappeared in the distance. Whoever the kind person was, we were sincerely grateful to him.
We turned back and brought the sleds into the house, finding a card attached to them. It read:“Happy Christmas! From Santa!” To make our kids experience the joy of opening the gifts the next morning, my husband and I quietly packaged the sleds. With the wish that it snowed bigger and we could take the kids to go sledding on the hill near our backyard, we fell into a deep sleep.

C. They tried to hide its ill effects. D. They considered it understandable.
7. What does the author want to convey through his experience?
A. We should follow our hearts bravely.
B We should not think nothing of liberal arts.
C. We should meet our parents’ expectations.
D. We should not give up halfway easily.

【4题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“I aimed to never express my desire to quit music, but my ranking as the worst violinist in my school band was all that needed to be told to my parents. After every long and boring class on my musical incompetence, I would find a way to release my emotions. (我的目标是永远不表达我退出音乐的愿望,但我在学校乐队中小提琴手最差的排名是我需要告诉父母的一切。在每一堂关于我音乐能力不足的漫长而无聊的课之后,我会找到一种释放情绪的方法)”可知,每节漫长又无聊的音乐课都在表明作者在音乐课程上很挣扎。故选C。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“After every long and boring class on my musical incompetence, I would find a way to release my emotions. Instead of sharing my problems with my friends or brothers, with a flashlight in one hand and a pen in the other, I conducted my writing sessions under my quilt secretly after my parents were asleep.

故选A。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Early the next morning, my husband and I were woken by the sound of the birds singing outside. We quickly got up to check the snow. It was a white world with thick snow covering the ground. Our wish came true. We woke up the children excitedly and helped them get dressed. After a brief breakfast, it was time to open the gifts that my husband and I had placed under the Christmas tree the night before. My kids couldn’t wait to unwrap the gifts. Seeing the two sleds, they felt surprised and happy, saying, “Thank Santa! Let’s go sledding, Dad! Mom!”
Paragraph 2:
Then we walked and arrived at the top of the hill near our backyard. We carefully placed the sleds down on the snow. My husband and I sat down, each with a kid sitting on our laps. Then we flew down. We hit the bottom of the hill, laughing loudly. We returned to the top of the hill, and continued going sledding. We did it again and again. We were all very happy. As we headed back, our kids hugged us, saying, “This is the best Christmas ever.” My husband and I were moved and were grateful to the kind man for sending us the gifts.
