Life is full of unexpected journeys. In 2014, my company Sinohydro sent me to work in Uganda on a big hydropower project. The project aimed to give power, jobs and money to Ugandan people, most of whom lived on less than $2 a day at that time.
When I first heard that I was going to Africa, I was a little worried. But I quickly realized people there were really friendly.
One day, my coworker and I stopped for gasoline (汽油) while driving to work. When we left the gas station, I dropped my phone but didn’t notice until 10 minutes later. I used my coworker’s phone to call mine.
I heard an African man’s voice on the other end, saying something in the local language. I told him that he was holding my phone. I thought that I wouldn’t get it back. But as we drove back to the gas station, we were surprised to see the man waiting in the hot sun. With a big smile, he gave my phone back to me. I was deeply moved.
Life in Africa is simple. There is not much to do in your spare time. But I enjoyed myself by organizing a dancing club and playing basketball games. We also came across wild animals. Once, I was chased by a seemingly cute baboon (狒狒). This disastrous encounter (灾难性的遭遇) with a wild animal completely ended my fantasy of having baby lions as pets!

Beer and eggs are commonly seen in the kitchen. However, scientists recently found that they were used in historic paintings, too.
To preserve (保存) Danish paintings, a group of researchers studied what ancient paint was made of. They did experiments on small pieces of paintings that had already been cut off from the original artwork.
According to their paper published in Science Advances, grains (谷物) and yeast (醇母) were found on the base of the paintings. Beer was the most common drink in the 19th century in Denmark, and its by-products were spent grains and yeast.
The study showed that they were used to provide a stable painting surface. Researchers also pointed out that beer by-product was used as a “glue” because it had a lot of sugar. With beer added, the paint can also dry faster.
Apart from beer, egg has long been found in oil-based paints used by artists in the 15th century, such as Italian painter Leonardo da Vinci. A recent study published in Nature Communications may have “cracked” the secret of how eggs can help preserve artworks.
The researchers re-created the ancient paint by adding egg yolks (蛋黄) to oil paint. They then looked into how it changed over time. The findings showed that the yolk’s proteins helped slow the oxidation (氧化) of the paint. It could also reduce wrinkling (皱褶) as the egg makes the paint more smooth.
However, the oil paint with added egg usually takes longer to dry. It seemed fine for artists—they were willing to accept to have their work preserved for longer.
“The more we understand how artists choose and use their materials, the more we can appreciate (欣赏) what they’re doing”, Ken Sutherland, an expert at the Art Institute of Chicago, US, told Science News. Sutherland added that research like this could help people have a deeper understanding of the artworks.
33.Why were beer by-products used in historic Danish paintings?
A.To help the colors stick better. B.To keep the paintings clean.
C.To make the paintings more colorful. D.To give the painting a different feel.
34.What does the underlined word “cracked” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.kept. B.shared. C.discovered. D.explored.
35.How could egg yolk proteins change the paint?
A.The paint could age faster. B.The paint could dry more quickly.
C.The paint’s colors could be nicer. D.The paint could feel smoother.
36.From Sutherland’s words, we can know that ________
A.it’s easy to appreciate artworks in the right methods
B.it’s important to understand the minds of artists
C.it’s hard to research early artworks
D.it’s necessary to help people understand artworks

What do you usually do in your spare time? Chatting online is now a national pastime (消遣) in China, especially among the post-90s and post-00s generations. To some people, however, online chats can seem like a kind of “polite conversation”. 41
Get to the Point
When sending a friend request, include your real name and many other identifying information. 42 If you want to start your conversation directly, never send “Are you there?” without any follow-up (补充的) messages. The quicker you get to the point, the more likely the other person is to reply.
43
Please send texts, not voice messages. It might be easier for you to speak than type, but what about the person on the other end? 44 For example, they may be driving a car or at a meeting. Also, never send information by voice message—it is hard to note down. What’s more, you can use emojis and GIFs in your conversation because they can help you reduce your embarrassment (尴尬) .
Try to Understand
45 If the person you’re talking to says “Good night” or “I’m going to take a shower”, that’s probably not what they’re actually going to do. It must be an excuse to stop talking to you. If someone waits for longer than three seconds before saying “Yes”, they probably really mean “No”. If you receive these emojis from friends who are older, read them as their literal (字面上的) meanings (such as a smile or a wave). For the post-90s and post-00s generations, however, they could be speechless.
A.Send the Right Things
B.Keep a Certain Distance
C.Remember, everybody’s time is valuable.
