Hu Sheguang, known for his creative designs and amazing shows, presented 100 fancy qipao dresses at the CP Center in Beijing during the 2024 A/W Beijing Fashion Week. Dozens of models, all in high heels, walked down the runway to show Hu’s qipao designs. There are four different styles: Flowery Woman, French-style Elegance, Rock ‘n’ Roll, and Neo-Chinese Style. These new designs changed how people viewed the traditional Chinese dress that had been around for a century and gave a new look to the old-fashioned Chinese dress. Qipao first appeared (出现) in the 1920s as a loose dress like the one-piece gowns (长袍) that men wore and then became popular among young women. About ten years later, the dress was changed to fit women’s bodies better, making it a must-have among fashionable women, especially in Shanghai, which was considered (被视为) the fashion capital of China. In the 1940s, qipao became more form-fitting with a high collar and tight sleeves. During the 1950s, it became a symbol of elegance (优雅). Today, many women in China still wear qipao for formal events. Traditional qipao dresses are usually made of silk, which can be expensive. However, Hu’s designs used all kinds of materials, such as cotton, linen and leather, to make sure that more women could have enough money to get one. Hu also made a change to the dress’s buttons (纽扣). He didn’t use the traditional knot buttons because they can be difficult to tie and untie. Instead, he used zippers (拉链) in his designs. “Chinese qipao is usually custom-made to show the wearer’s character. Qipao is also so inclusive that it can be worn for different events, allowing every woman to be fashionable,” Hu said. 31. What do we know about Hu’s qipao designs? A. There are fourteen different styles. B. They are leading the fashion designs in China. C. They were first shown to the public in the activity. D. They changed people’s views on traditional Chinese dress. 32. When did qipao become a must-have for fashionable women? A. In the 1920s. B. In the 1930s. C. In the 1940s. D. In the 1950s. 33. We didn’t have a TV growing up, so the whole family would get together in my brother’s room every night. While my mom knitted (编织) , my father, the biggest reader I know, would read aloud to us for hours. We loved J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and stories set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. Before I entered the first grade, we had already finished The Lord of the Rings. Although I loved the stories in the books, learning how to read them was a very big challenge — I had dyslexia (阅读障碍). This meant my brain had trouble putting the letters in the correct order, making reading and writing very difficult for me. I finally learned to read at the start of fourth grade with the help of a tutor (家庭教师) . Instead of making me run away from books, my dyslexia made me want to read even more. My parents often took me to a bookstore near our home. I bought a book about Helen Keller there and read it many times. Helen Keller’s story of dealing with blindness and deafness taught me to keep trying when facing difficulties. Peggy Parish’s Amelia Bedelia books, with their interesting stories, made me realize that making mistakes is part of learning. These books helped me build confidence and a lasting love for reading. Reading became a beautiful part of my life. For my parents, reading was like breathing. Our home was filled with books, and my mom and dad always talked about what they were reading. Being able to join these conversations made me feel like I was truly a part of the family. 36. Who read to the author before the first grade? A. Her father. B. Her mother. C. Her brother. D. Researchers looked up more than 40 years of data on adult (成年人) deaths from more than 600 studies in 59 countries. According to the study, the risk (风险) of death falls greatly for those who have finished more years of schooling. Completing 18 years of education, from kindergarten through college, cut adult death rate (死亡率) by 34%. This is almost the same as being healthy by eating lots of vegetables. The connection between health and education is strongest for younger adults ages 18—49. For every one more year of schooling, the death rate for adults under 50 is reduced (减少) by nearly 3%, and for older adults, the benefit (好处) was smaller but still important. “A lot of kids I work with are thinking about dropping out of school because their families need them to make money,” said Linn Gould, the executive director of Just Health Action in Seattle. She believes that helping students understand how education benefits their long-term health could motivate them to stay in school and complete their education. “I think kids would like to know these things, especially as they’re making decisions about their future and their opinions about education,” Gould said. This study looked only at adults, but other research shows that more education for parents is also good for their children. For every one more year of schooling a parent gets, the death rate of their child under age 5 goes down by 3% for mothers and 1.6% for fathers. The research (研究) team next plans to look at the effect of education on some kinds of health problems, like heart disease and obesity (肥胖), along with how kids’ health might be affected by not being in school. 41. What is the study mainly about? A. The benefits of a healthy life. B. Reasons for lifelong learning. C. Ways to improve students’ study. D. The effect of schooling on health. 42. What can we learn from Paragraph 2? A. Adults over 50 benefit more from education. B. Students’ health is important for their learning. C. Schooling can greatly reduce the risk of death in adults. D. Vegetables do not always help improve people’s health. 43. What does the underlined word “motivate” in Paragraph 3 probably mean? A. 阻止 B. 允许 C. 保护 D. 激励 44. What is the next step of the research team? A. To show the harm of not studying at school. B. To find out why parents’ education is important. C. 33. How is Hu’s qipao different from traditional qipao? A. It has beautiful buttons. B. It fits women’s bodies better. C. It is made of cheap materials. D. Women can wear them for different events. 34. Hu used zippers in his designs to make qipao _______. A. look formal B. easy to wear C. suitable for every woman D. not easy to clean and put away 35. Where is the passage most probably taken from? A. A history textbook. B. A sports newspaper. C. A fashion magazine. D. A travel guide. C I have a very special relationship with books. We didn’t have a TV growing up so the whole family would get together in my brother’s room every night. 42. C.
