The USAWKF National Team Trials happen every two years. Coaches and students get up at 7 am each day to practice for the trials. For 30 years Pei and Zhang have been working in Wushu education. Pci, who is in his 60s, moved to the United States from China with his family in 1972. “When we moved to Vestal, New York, I did not know any English and started learning English from alphabets,” Pci says. “So I figured it might be a better idea to start learning Wushu in case I got into a fight and could protect myself.” He later realized Wushu is composed of two Chinese characters, “zhi” (止) and “ge” (戈) which means to stop fighting. The couple opened their first academy in Virginia in 1988. Students start as kindergartners and many continue all the way to college. Chinese culture emphasizes mastering both literacy and martial arts in order to become a complete person. Zhang believes Wushu helps youth develop concentration because its two main principles include focus and respect. “Many parents who grew up in the U. S. as second - or third-generation Chinese need their children to not only learn traditional Chinese culture but also the correct way to become a better person,” Peigy says. They devote six days of the week to Wushu education. Sunday is the only day when their attention is not on their students. “Learning Wushu is difficult, Peigy says. But the disease is making a comeback, caused by a growing anti-vaccine movement and misinformation that is spreading quickly. Already this year, 115 measles cases have been reported in the USA, compared with 189 for all of last year. The numbers might sound small, but they are the leading edge of a dangerous trend. When vaccination rates are very high, as they still are in the nation as a whole, everyone is protected. This is called “herd immunity”, which protects the people who get hurt easily, including those who can’t be vaccinated for medical reasons, babies too young to get vaccinated and people on whom the vaccine doesn’t work. But herd immunity works only when nearly the whole herd joins in. When some refuse vaccination and seek a free ride, immunity breaks down and everyone is in even bigger danger. That’s exactly what is happening in small neighborhoods around the country from Orange County, California, where 22 measles cases were reported this month, to Brooklyn, N.Y., where a 17-year-old caused an outbreak last year. The resistance to vaccine has continued for decades and it is driven by a real but very small risk. Those who refuse to take that risk selfishly make others suffer. Making things worse are state laws that make it too easy to opt out(决定不参加) of what are supposed to be required vaccines for all children entering kindergarten. Seventeen states allow parents to get an exemption(豁免), sometimes just by signing a paper saying they personally object to a vaccine. Now, several states are moving to tighten laws by adding new regulations for opting out. But no one does enough to limit exemptions. Parents ought to be able to opt out only for limited medical or religious reasons. But personal opinions? Not good enough. Everyone enjoys the life-saving benefits vaccines provide, but they’ll exist only as long as everyone shares in the risks. 8. The first two paragraphs suggest that ____________. A. a small number of measles cases can start a dangerous trend B. the outbreak of measles attracts the public attention C. anti-vaccine movement has its medical reasons D. information about measles spreads quickly 9. Herd immunity works well when ____________. A. exemptions are allowed B. several vaccines are used together C. the whole neighborhood is involved in D. new regulations are added to the state laws 10. What is the main reason for the comeback of measles? A. The overuse of vaccine. B. The lack of medical care. C. The features of measles itself. D. The vaccine opt-outs of some people. 11. What is the purpose of the passage? A. To introduce the idea of exemption. B. To discuss methods to cure measles. C. To stress the importance of vaccination. D. To appeal for equal rights in medical treatment. 【答案】8. A 9. C 10. D 11. C 【解析】 【分析】本文是说明文。主要介绍了麻疹在历史上带来的危害,并解释了为什么会发生这样的情况。 【8题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段第一句话The numbers might sound small, but they are the leading edge of a dangerous trend.麻疹患者的数量虽然小,但是他们却是一种危险趋势的前沿,故选A。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段But herd immunity works only when nearly the whole herd joins in.可知只有群体中所有人都参与进来了群体免疫才会有用,故选C。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段But the disease is making a comeback, caused by a growing anti-vaccine movement and misinformation that is spreading quickly. C。 D If you are taking vitamin supplements to reduce your risk of heart disease or cancer, a group of health experts want you to know that those vitamins may actually increase your risk of cancer. The US Preventive Services Task Force came to this conclusion after reviewing dozens of studies. Nearly half of adults in the US take at least one vitamin or mineral supplement on a regular basis. These pills are advertised as a way to promote general health. In some cases, manufacturers promote them as cancer fighters and heart protectors. Studies in animals and in laboratory dishes suggest that oxidative (氧化性的) stress contributes to diseases like cancer and heart disease. If so, there is a reason to believe that antioxidants — including beta-carotene, vitamins A, C, and E — could be useful as preventive medicines. But when the Task Force examined the medical evidence on vitamins, it found “inadequate (不充分的) evidence” to support the claims that vitamin and mineral supplements benefit healthy adults. “Cardiovascular (心血管的) disease and cancer have a significant health impact in America, and we all want to find ways to prevent these diseases,” Dr. Virginia Moyer, who heads the Task Force, said in a statement. But so far, she added, the medical evidence does not show that taking vitamins is helpful in this regard. However, the Task Force did find “adequate evidence” that people with a raised risk for lung cancer actually increase their risk further by taking beta-carotene, a precursor of vitamin A. The Task Force recommendations of taking vitamins regularly apply to healthy adults aged 50 and older who don’t have “special nutritional needs”. The advice does not apply to children, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, people with chronic illnesses, or people who have to take supplements because they can’t get all their essential nutrients from their diet. 12. Studies in animals and in laboratory dishes find out________. A. ample evidence that taking vitamins are helpful for treating lung cancer B. cardiovascular disease spreads very fast in America C. oxidative stress can lead to heart disease and cancer D. people must take vitamins on a regular basis 13. What can we conclude from Task Force’s findings? A. Scientists want to control cardiovascular disease. B. In some regard, taking vitamins is not useful. C. Manufacturers cannot produce medical-use vitamins. D. Vitamins must be useful to prevent cancer and heart disease. 14. Who can take vitamins regularly according to the advice of the Task Force? A. A 60-year-old healthy worker. B. A 15-year-old boy with short-sightedness. C. A 34-year-old pregnant lady. D. A 40-year-old man who never eats vegetables or fruits. 15. What’s the best title for the text? A. An Inside Look at Vitamins B. Task Force: Ending to Vitamins C. Vitamins: To Live or to Kill D Taking Vitamins to Prevent Cancer May Fail 【答案】12. C 13. B 14. A 15. D 【解析】 【分析】本文是一篇科普短文。以前人们人物服用维他命可以减低患心脏病和癌症危险,但最近的研究结果现实实际情况与原来观点相反,服用维他命并不能帮助降低患心脏病和癌症的危险,反而会带来不好影响。 【12题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段第一句Studies in animals and in laboratory dishes suggest that oxidative (氧化性的) stress contributes to diseases like cancer and heart disease.(在动物和实验室培养皿中的研究表明,氧化应激会导致癌症和心脏病等疾病)可知,氧化性压力困难会导致心脏病和癌症。故C项正确。 【13题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第一段If you are taking vitamin supplements to reduce your risk of heart disease or cancer, a group of health experts want you to know that those vitamins may actually increase your risk of cancer.(如果你服用维生素补充剂以降低患心脏病或癌症的风险,一组健康专家想让你知道,这些维生素实际上可能会增加患癌症的风险)可知,在某些方面,服用维生素是没有用的,反而会带来不好影响。故B项正确。 【14题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段The Task Force recommendations of taking vitamins regularly apply to healthy adults aged 50 and older who don’t have “special nutritional needs”. The advice does not apply to children, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, people with chronic illnesses, or people who have to take supplements because they can’t get all their essential nutrients from their diet. Color is fundamental in home design—something you’ll always have in every room. A grasp of how to manage color in your spaces is one of the first steps to creating rooms you’ll love to live in. Do you want a room that’s full of life? Professional? Or are you just looking for a place to relax after a long day? _____16_____, color is the key to making a room feel the way you want it to feel. Over the years, there have been a number of different techniques to help designers approach this important point. _____17_____, they can get a little complex. But good news is that there’re really only three kinds of decisions you need to make about color in your home: the small ones, the medium ones, and the large ones. _____18_____. They’re the little spots of color like throw pillows, mirrors and baskets that most of us use to add visual interest to our rooms. Less tiring than painting your walls and less expensive than buying a colorful sofa, small color choices bring with them the significant benefit of being easily changeable. Medium color choices are generally furniture pieces such as sofas, dinner tables or bookshelves. _____19_____. They require a bigger commitment than smaller ones, and they have a more powerful effect on the feeling of a space. The large color decisions in your rooms concern the walls, ceilings, and floors. Whether you’re looking at wallpaper or paint, the time, effort and relative expense put into it are significant. _____20_____. A. While all of them are useful B. Whatever you’re looking for C. If you’re experimenting with a color D. Small color choices are the ones we’re most familiar with E. It’s not really a good idea to use too many small color pieces F. So it pays to be sure, because you want to get it right the first time G. Color choices in this range are a step up from the small ones in two major ways 【答案】16. B 17. A 18. D 19. G 20. F 【解析】 【分析】本文是一篇说明文。文章讲述了室内设计中颜色的选择问题。 【16题详解】 36题以逗号结尾,后面另起一个简单句,可以从句子结构排除D,E,F,G项。根据前文三个问句可知,此处是从中选择一种。故选B(不管你寻找哪一种)。 【17题详解】 前文:在过去的许多年里,有许多技术帮助设计者实现这一要点;下文:它们有点复杂。所以A(然而他们都很有用)承上启下。符合题意。 【18题详解】 本空是一个主题句,总说选择小型颜色是我们很熟悉的方法。后文分说小型颜色选择具体用于哪些。故选D。 【19题详解】 根据前文“中型颜色选择通常是指一些例如沙发,餐桌或者书架等家具的颜色选择”,接着表明这种范围的颜色选择是比小型颜色选择在两种方式上更高一级,故选G。 【20题详解】 根据前文the time, effort and relative expense put into it are significant(你所付诸的时间、精力和相关的费用是巨大的),后文F项(那肯定是值得的,因为你想第一次把它弄好)是上文的结果。故选F。 点睛:关键词法解决阅读填空题是一种有效的方法。做题时很重要的一点是保持对一些线索词的敏感,最主要的线索特征词是空白前后的名词和动词,寻找答案时注意在选项中查找同义词、近义词、反义词或表示同一类事物的词语等。其次是代词、数词、表示时间/年代的词、地点/名称等专有名词等。尤其是在读不懂句子的情况下,利用这样的线索词寻找答案是很有效的方法。 37题A选项中的them 指代上文中的 different techniques 和下文中的they 指代内容相同。 38题上一段末尾提到要介绍三种颜色选择,本段详细介绍第一种small color choice.选项和语段中都有关键词small color choice。 39题本段主要内容是medium color choice, 前半句承接上文中medium是small的升级,后半句引出下文的两种方式。关键词:two major ways和...and …。 第二部分: 完型填空 (共 20小题,每小题1.5分,共30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Even though it was only October, my students were already whispering about Christmas plans. You know the adults are busy with their jobs and have no time for their kids. So I volunteered to look after them - of course not too many, ten at most- and taught them English. Yes it seems that I helped them, but in fact I benefited, too. I became better at getting along with people and more outgoing (I was shy you know) and meanwhile I practised my spoken English. What's the most important is that I indeed make a difference to others' life! My neighbors are really thankful to me! I feel so happy, so proud, and you see, I am a useful person! On a training handout D. On a guidebook C Measles(麻疹), which once killed 450 children each year and disabled even more, was nearly wiped out in the United States 14 years ago by the universal use of the MMR vaccine(疫苗). The resistance to vaccine has continued for decades, and it is driven by a real but very small risk. A. exemptions are allowed B. several vaccines are used together C the whole neighborhood is involved in D. new regulations are added to the state laws 10. D If you are taking vitamin supplements to reduce your risk of heart disease or cancer, a group of health experts want you to know that those vitamins may actually increase your risk of cancer. D A 40-year-old man who never eats vegetables or fruits. 15. What’s the best title for the text? A. An Inside Look at Vitamins B. Task Force: Ending to Vitamins C. Vitamins: To Live or to Kill D.
