I use it most in summer when the weather is warm and dry. It can be very unpleasant in winter because the weather is cold and rainy. My husband uses my bicycle sometimes for a visit to his friend. He is not good at riding a bicycle, but he says it is better than waiting for a bus. He still likes his car best. I think sitting in a car all day makes him fatter and fatter. Huck is my name, Huckleberry Finn. The story started when my best friend, Tom Sawyer and I found $12,000 in a cave. That money made us rich. We got $6,000 each. Judge Thatcher, an important man in St. Petersburg, put it in the bank, and now we get a dollar a day interest (利息).
Then a kind old lady called Douglas invited me to live with her because I haven’t got a family or a home. My mother died a long time ago, then my dad, Pap, disappeared. He was a violent (暴力的) man especially when he drank a lot, which was most of the time, and he often beat me. I was scared of him. I didn’t go to school like the other boys of my age. I lived on the streets and in the woods.
My life changed after I lived with Douglas. She gave me a bed to sleep in and bought new clothes for me. She read stories to me and taught me how to eat at a table. But then her sister Miss Watson arrived. She brought her black slave (奴隶) Jim with her. I liked Jim but I didn’t like Miss Watson very much. She often shouted at me.
Douglas sent me to school every day. I didn’t like going there at first because learning was very difficult. But when I could read and write a bit, I didn’t mind going.
The months passed and winter came. The weather got cold. One morning I woke up and there was snow on the ground. On my way to school I saw some footprints outside Douglas’s house. There was a cross on the heel (脚后跟) of the left one. My heart jumped. Only one person wore boots with a cross on the left heel! Pap!
“He’s heard about my ________” I thought. “And he wants it!”
That night I went to see Jim. Jim had a magic ball made of animal hair. There was a spirit inside the ball that could answer people’s questions about the future.

Height is just one of the thousands of features your genes (基因) decide. In fact, because you have two parents, your genes provide you a height that usually lands somewhere between the height of each parent. If both your parents are tall, then most probably you will be tall, too, but if you have questions about how tall you’re going to be, ask your doctor if he or she can help you find it out.
But genes don’t decide everything. For example, eating an unhealthy diet can keep you from growing to your full potential (潜力). Getting plenty of sleep and enough exercise will help you grow to the expected height.
No doubt you’re wondering how fast you should grow. It depends. There’s no perfect or right answer. Generally speaking, kids grow about 2 inches (6 centimeters) a year between age 3 and the time when they start puberty.
Your doctor will know how your growth has been going over the years. Two centimeters here and 2 inches there are not nearly as important as the height you’re at now how you’ve been growing up to this point, and what other changes your body may be going through.
Don’t be scared if you seem to have grown a lot in a very short time. Everyone has a growth spurt (高峰) during puberty. The age for starting puberty is about 10 for girls and about 11 for boys. But it can be earlier or later—between 7 and 13 for girls and 9 and 15 for boys.
You’ll usually begin to notice that you’re growing faster about a year or so after your body starts to show the first changes of puberty.
58. The Chinese for the word “puberty” is ________.
59. This passage is mainly about ________.
A. how the genes work in your body B. when is the time called puberty
C. why you look like your parents D. how you grow to a certain height
60. After reading this passage, we can explain ________.
A. how good it is to be a doctor B. how much sleep time we need
C. why genes can’t decide everything D. what healthy diet is
61. Which is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A. Your height most probably depends on how high your parents are.
B. Girls’ age for starting puberty is usually earlier than that for boys’.
C. The time showing the first changes of puberty is never noticed.
D. You may be scared sometimes when you grow too fast.
D 59. D 60. C 61. C

根据“The age for starting puberty is about 10 for girls and about 11 for boys. But it can be earlier or later—between 7 and 13 for girls and 9 and 15 for boys.”
根据“Height is just one of the thousands of features your genes (基因) decide.” 因此本文着重讲述的内容就是告诉读者我们如何才达到特定的身高,即how you grow to a certain height。
根据“But genes don’t decide everything. For example, eating an unhealthy diet can keep you from growing to your full potential (潜力). Getting plenty of sleep and enough exercise will help you grow to the expected height.”
根据“You’ll usually begin to notice that you’re growing faster about a year or so after your body starts to show the first changes of puberty.”
E
Once, a circle (圆) lost a piece of its own. The circle wanted to be whole, so it went around looking for its missing piece. But it was incomplete, so it could only roll (滚动) very slowly. It enjoyed the flowers and the sunshine along the way. It talked with worms. It found lots of different pieces, but none of them fit. So it left them all by the side of the road and kept on looking for the missing piece.
Then one day the circle found a piece that fit perfectly (完美地). The circle put the missing piece into itself. It could be whole with nothing missing. It was so happy and began to roll. Now that (既然) it was a perfect circle, it could roll very fast, too fast to see flowers or talk to worms. It got to know how different the world was when it rolled so quickly. It felt so sad that it stopped, left its found piece by the side of the road and rolled away slowly.
Sometimes we are perfect when we lose something. A man who has everything is a poor man in some ways. He will never have hopes, dreams or something better. He will never know someone loves him or someone is giving him something he has always wanted or never had.
We couldn’t be perfect, but we must be brave enough to love, strong enough to forgive (宽恕), kind enough to share happiness with others and clever enough to know there is enough love around us and then we can always live a wonderful life.

Americans love their dogs and look after them well. They take their dogs for walks, let them play outside and give them good food and medical care. So there are many expressions (表达) about the dog in English.
Some people say we live in a “dog-eat-dog” world. That means in order to be successful, people have to work hard and complete against (竞争) each other fiercely (激烈地). Such hard work can make people “dog-tired”. And, the situation will be even worse if they become a “sick dog”.
Still, people say “Every dog has its day”. This means that every person enjoys some successful days during his or her life. We can describe someone who is unkind as a “junkyard dog”. A junkyard is not a fun place for a dog. Junkyard dogs live in places where people throw away things that they don’t want.
Husbands and wives use this expression “doghouse” when they are angry with each other. For example, a woman might get angry with her husband for coming home late. She might tell him that he is in the “doghouse” now.
People also use dog expressions to describe the weather. “The dog days of summer” are the hottest days of the year. A rainstorm may make the weather cool. But we do not want too much heavy rain. We do not want it rains “cats and dogs”.

Two centimeters here and 2 inches there are not nearly as important as the height you’re at now, how you’ve been growing up to this point, and what other changes your body may be going through.
58 The Chinese for the word “puberty” is ________.

62. The circle rolled very slowly at first because it ________.
A. spent much time talking to worms B. wanted to enjoy the sunshine
C. was looking for its missing piece D. lost a piece of its own
63. After it was whole again and rolled fast, the circle ________.
A. felt unhappy B. could see more beautiful flowers
C. could talk to any worm D. could go everywhere
64. If a man owns everything, he will be ________ in some ways according to the passage.
A. perfect B. poor C. happy D. strong
65. The story mainly tells us that ________.
A. nobody loves us if we give nothing
B. a man who has everything is the happiest
C. losing something may not be a bad thing sometimes
D. we are not whole when we lose something
