Why don’t they have a place to stay?’” John Hansen recalled. “After I explained that they had run into hard times and were homeless, I knew that we were looking at an educational opportunity. My son wanted to help them.” The father and son convinced a local Jamba Juice store to donate more than 100 smoothies(果汁)and the pair gave them out to homeless people in a park. After that, they came up with an even better idea. “I wanted a way to get to know people better, “Chase said. ”So, my dad and I decided to start taking some of the homeless people we’d met out to lunch. “A lot of people walk right past homeless people and don’t see the person,” he said. “I know now that they’re people just like us. They want to make a connection and not feel so alone in the world.” Hundreds of lunches later, they run a self-funded charity called Project Empathy(同情)to help inspire others to meet and to create relationships with the homeless people in their neighborhoods. The organization provides a list of resources that can help homeless people with food, housing and employment. John said that what started as a way to spend quality time with his son has turned into a passion for both of them. “Chase and I realized that the country needed an army of people to practice empathy, and that by doing something as simple as taking a homeless person to lunch, we could maybe inspire others to do the same, ”he said. “Any time you can help to give someone a voice, it’s empowering. 24. There, Cavendish built himself a laboratory and workshop. When his father died in 1783. Cavendish moved the laboratory to Clapham Common, where he also lived. He never married and was so reserved that there is little record of his having any social life except occasional meetings with scientific friends. During his lifetime, Cavendish made striking discoveries in chemistry, mainly between 1766 and 1788, and in electricity, between 1771 and 1788. In 1783, he published a study of the means of determining the freezing point of mercury (水银).In 1784. Cavendish determined the make-up of water, showing that it was a combination of oxygen and hydrogen. Cavendish’s most celebrated investigation was that on the density (密度) of the earth. In 1798, he published a single famous paper on the density of the earth. Spending his whole life in the laboratory and library, Cavendish’s life was quite simple. He died in London on February 24,1810. But because he had a low regard for glory, he cared little about publishing his results and getting priority for discovery, and much of his work remained unpublished. It was not until the middle of the 19th century that some extremely valuable materials were found in his manuscripts (手稿),which proved that he had made a great contribution to the development of science. 28. The material, called MarinaTex, is the winner of this year’s James Dyson Award. “It began with my desire to work with waste” says Lucy Hughes, a recent graduate from University of Sussex, who once visited a fish processing factory to see the massive quantity of waste generated by the industry and found new ways to use it. She focused on fish skins and scales(鳞片). “When I had it in my hands, I realized this has got potential,” she says. “It s super strong and flexible.” Hughes spent months experimenting with fish waste in her kitchen, running more than 100 experiments to find a binder(粘合剂) and a process that could hold together the proteins in the fish skins and scales.“I had a lot of failed attempts. A lot of things either were too easily broken or too soft or easily went bad,” she says. She finally found a type of algae that can be locally got. The material can be used to replace oil-based plastic in packaging such as bags or the half-transparent windows used to show products in boxes. As her research continues, Hughes says that she’ll be studying how MarinaTex works and how long it could be used to store food. Unlike some “composable” plastics, which need to be processed in an industrial composting(堆肥) facility to break down, the new material can break down in four to six weeks in a backyard compost bin. “All the ingredients are food-grade safe,” Hughes says. “So, this breaks down much like a piece of food would break down. 32. Why did MarinaTex win this year s James Dyson Award? A. It doesn’t go into the ocean. B. It is environmentally-friendly. C. It doesn’t produce any waste. D. It doesn’t look like conventional plastic. 33. What is the main idea conveyed in paragraph 2? A. Where Hughes got inspiration for the binder. B. How Hughes developed MarinaTex. C. What advantages MarinaTex has. D. Where the binder can be used. 34. What is yet to be found out? A. How long it takes for MarinaTex to break down. B. How long MarinaTex can be used to store food. C. Whether MarinaTex can replace oil-based plastic. D. Whether MarinaTex is better than half-transparent windows. 35. Where is the text most likely to appear? A. In a science fiction. B. In a government report. C. In a science magazine. D. In a government announcement. 【答案】32. B 33. B 34. B 35. When Chase Hansen was only 4 years old, he encountered homeless people for the first time while shopping with his dad at an outdoor mall in Salt Lake City, Nevada. It’s no wonder that he had a lot of questions. “Chase looked at me and said, ‘Dad, who are these people? 24. D This new packaging material looks like conventional plastic, but it’s actually made from fish waste and algae(海藻)—unlike plastic, if it escapes into the ocean, a fish could eat it safely. The material, called MarinaTex, is the winner of this year’s James Dyson Award. “It began with my desire to work with waste,” says Lucy Hughes, a recent graduate from University of Sussex, who once visited a fish processing factory to see the massive quantity of waste generated by the industry and found new ways to use it. B.
