I was the only kid in college with a reason to go to the mail box, because my mother never believed in email, or cell phones in general. I was literally waiting to get a letter to see how the weekend had gone, which was usually the warmest comfort for me.
So when I moved to New York and got sucker-punched in the face by depression, I did the only thing I could think of — writing letters like my mother for strangers. I blogged about those letters and crazily promised I would write a hand-written letter to whoever asked me to.
Overnight, my inbox became this harbor of heartbreak-a single mother in Sacramento, a girl being bullied (恐吓) in rural Kansas. . , all asking me to write them a letter and give them a reason to wait by the mailbox. And this is how the act The World Needs More Love Letters was born, fueled by those trips to the mailbox. But the thing about these letters is that most of them have been written by people, who have grown up into a paperless world where some best conversations happen swiftly on a screen.
I’ve been carrying this mail crate (大木箱) with me these days, which is a magical icebreaker. So I get to tell total strangers about a woman whose husband was traumatized (受精神创伤) from war in Afghanistan, and how she left love letters throughout the house as a way to say, “Come back to me. ” And the man, who had decided to take his life, tonight slept safely with letters just beneath his pillow, handwritten by strangers who were there for him.
These are the kinds of stories that convince me that letter-writing will always be needed, even in these days, because it is an art now, all of it: the signing, the scripting, and the mailing.

C. It encourages people to recover from traumas. D. It helps to start a conversation with passers-by.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?

Full stops (句号) frighten young people when used in social media communication as they are seen as a sign of anger, according to language experts. Teenagers and those in their early twenties, known as Generation Z, have grown up with smartphones which they use to send short messages without full stops.
According to experts, youngsters would break up their thoughts by sending each one as a separate (单独的) message, rather than use a full stop, which they use only to show they are annoyed.
Some have said the full stop is not necessary when used in texting because the message is ended just by sending it. “If you send a text message without a full stop, it’s already obvious that you’ve ended the message,” said language expert Dr Lauren Fonteyn. “So if you add that additional marker for completion, they will read something into it and it is possible to be a negative tone (语气).”
However Owen McArdle, a leading language expert, said, “I’m not sure whether I agree about emails without full stops. I guess it depends on how formal they are and what kind of messages are expressed.”
The possible change in the meaning of the full stop, connected with online communication, has been debated by language experts for years. In 2015, a study from Binghamton University in New York, which surveyed 126 university students, suggested that people who finish messages with full stops are viewed as insincere.
“Looking at any instant messaging exchange online, you will find young people simply do not put full stops in, unless they want to make a point,” said Dr Lauren Fonteyn. “The full stop has become an ‘emotion marker’ which tells the recipient (收件人) that the person who sends the message is annoyed.”
8. What do we know about teenagers from the text?
A. They are used to using full stops to end sentences.
B. They use full stops in social media to frighten people.
C. They don’t use full stops when sending messages.
D. They have trouble reading text messages without full stops.
9. What do people think of the full stop according to paragraph 3?
A. They think the full stop is interesting. B. They think the full stop is unnecessary.
C. They think the full stop is important. D. They think the full stop is unacceptable.
10. Which of the following agrees with Owen McArdle’s opinion?
A. Context is the key and full stops are still important in emails.
B. Full stops should be used after every word of the text messages.
C. The meaning of text messages will be influenced without full stops.
D. People might be annoyed when receiving text messages with full stops.
11. What does a text message with full stops suggest according to many young people?
A. The sender is sincere. B. The sender is angry.
C. The recipient is less sincere. D. The recipient is annoyed.
D
A new trend called “praise groups” or “in-need-of-praise” chat groups has become popular on Chinese social media. In Chinese culture, where modesty (谦逊) is valued, openly seeking and giving praise is uncommon. These chat groups provide a platform for people to receive compliments (赞扬) and encouragement, which are often lacking in their daily lives.
To join a praise group, users can pay a fee on e-commerce sites, starting at 50 yuan for five minutes of compliments. The group members will then show the person with praises and kind words. The compliments can be designed for a friend or loved one as well. Participants have found that being praised by strangers can help lift their spirits and improve their self-confidence.
For example, Meng Zha, a student at Shanghai’s Tongji University, tried the service and found it interesting and encouraging. She received compliments on her appearance and even quotes (引用) from popular songs. Ms Meng couldn’t help but laugh at the compliments and expressed her wish to post such high-quality praises in the future.
Praise groups have appeared as a way for people in China to look for and receive compliments and encouragement that may be lacking in their daily lives. It provides a positive and uplifting experience for participants, improving a sense of happiness and self-worth.
Those who support the groups, see them as an antidote to extremely bad moods (情绪) which are often connected with things happening on the Internet. “At first, the purpose of this group is to make us learn to praise others and accept others’ praises confidently. Here we can drop everything, and use our heart to praise and support others,” one member said. But the life journey is long and there are some unexpected situations that we can only depend on ourselves to face when there is no one out there to offer help.
12. What is the purpose of praise groups?
A. To make praise popular. B. To have everyone supported.
C. To share common interests. D. To give people hope and happiness.
13. What can we learn about Meng Zha in paragraph 3?
A She was not strong enough. B. She was under working stress.
C. She was satisfied with the service. D. She was a gifted singer in her area.
14. What does the underlined word “antidote” mean in the last paragraph?
A. A kind of medicine. B. A way of making new friends.
C. A method of being confident. D. The wisdom of solving problems.
15. What is the author’s attitude to praise groups?
A. Worried. B. Objective. C. Supportive. D. Confused.

Our preferred park is a 2km walk from my house and it has a 1km walking track. I could not drive him there every day as I had to leave for the office while at the same time he wanted to set out. Since there were hardly any footpaths in Karachi, my father said he was delighted to walk on the road as he was certain there wouldn’t be much traffic in the morning.
Though I kept him informed that our house was near the park and was made of red bricks in case he got lost, I was still less confident so I suggested it would be safer if changed his walk time to the evening. That way I could take him to the park after work. However, my father — a determined person — said that he could not change his routine for just a few days and insisted that he would be leaving the house every day at 7 am and returning by 8 am. So one day when he had not returned by 8:30 am, my wife, Qaisa phoned me in a panic Worried, I immediately drove home, taking the same route that my father would have taken for his walk.
Not spotting him anywhere, I drove back to the park, in the hone of discovering some trace, but in vain. Totally at a loss for what to do next, I returned home and waited impatiently, walking back and forth in the house.

4. What can we learn from the first paragraph?

However, Owen McArdle, a leading language expert, said, “I’m not sure whether I agree about emails without full stops.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. A 11. B

Those who support the groups see them as an antidote to extremely bad moods (情绪) which are often connected with things happening on the Internet.
A. She was not strong enough.
A. Worried. B. Objective. C. Supportive. D. Confused.

根据空后的“and more powerful than”可知,空处应与more powerful并列,也用比较级。
故填The。
故填or。
故填to find。

【答案】 At 10:35 am the doorbell rang and my father stood outside the door smiling, accompanied by a young man. My father explained that he had gotten lost during his walk and ended up quite far from home. The young man, who had found my father wandering and looking confused, kindly offered to help. After listening to my father describe where he lived, the good fellow decided it was best to personally ensure his safe return rather than risk miscommunication over the phone or with directions.
After knowing what had happened, I showed my appreciation of the young man’s kindness. I thanked him genuinely, touched by his generosity and concern for an elderly stranger. We invited him in for tea, but he politely declined, stating that he was glad to have been able to assist and that he needed to get back to his own schedule. His selfless act reminded us of the goodness in people and reinforced the importance of community spirit. We saw the young man off, and I made sure to discuss with my father about carrying an emergency contact card during his future outings.
