B Winters in Norway can be long and dark, with very little sunlight. But winter can be one of the most exciting times to visit, especially for music lovers. The annual Ice Music Festival celebrates the sounds of winter. At the festival, held in the small mountain town of Geilo, world-class musicians play frozen instruments in a musical band unlike any other. The first Ice Music Festival took place in 2006, but its director, Terje Isungset, had been making instruments from ice since 1999. Terje, a creative musician known for using natural elements in his instruments, described discovering the capability to create sound with ice as “art by accident”. Once he learned of the different sounds produced with ice, he began experimenting with a variety of instruments, including harps (竖琴) and horns (小号). In 2005 he published All Ice Records, a record of ice-only music. It’s the instruments that make the Ice Music Festival unique. The process of creating them begins at a lake near Geilo. Here the ice is clean and pure, perfect for making music. The ice must be natural. Man-made ice does not produce the same sound. Workers cut 272 kg blocks of ice from the lake and transport them back to town. Next, ice sculptor (雕塑家) Bill Covitz works alongside the musicians for hours to create instruments. Bill carves individual parts of each instrument, then uses water as glue to hold the parts together. Working with ice creates new challenges for the musicians. The ice instruments are much more fragile than regular instruments. And performers can’t play familiar songs because they don’t know what sounds the ice instruments will make. “You cannot go on stage and expect a certain sound. You have to play with the sound that the instrument actually can make. And then try to create good music out of this,” says Terje. Perhaps the biggest challenge, though, is being sure that the instruments don’t melt (融化)! The musicians’ body heat may cause damage to the instruments, especially for horn players who are blowing warm air right into the ice! Despite the challenges, the festival brings people from around the world to enjoy the beauty of winter, nature, and music. 6. According to Paragraph 2, which statement is TRUE? A. All Ice Records was published in 2006. B. Terje tried out two kinds of instruments in total. C The first Ice Music Festival took place in Norway in 1999. D. Terje was famous for using natural elements in his instruments. 7. Why is the ice from a lake near Geilo perfect for making music? A. It’s clean and pure. B. It’s man-made. C. It can be transported. D. It can be sculpted. 8. What’s the first step to create the ice instruments? A. The sculptor creates the instruments. B. Workers transport the ice to the town. C. Workers cut blocks of ice from the lake. D. The sculptor glues the parts of instruments together. 9. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “fragile” in Paragraph 4? A. Easily broken. B. Tightly stuck. C. Widely found. D. Frequently seen. 10. What can be the best title for the text? A. All Ice Records B. Frozen Instruments C. Winters in Norway D. World-class Musicians C Learning how to cook can be a fun process, especially food-making adventure with good friends at college. For Huo Zhiyi, this year’s Dragon Boat Festival was surely one to remember. Instead of having a holiday dinner at a restaurant, the 21-year-old junior student and her classmates from Shenyang Agricultural University cooked for themselves in a shared kitchen. This new shared kitchen, which covers 340 square meters on the second floor of the university’s First Dining Hall, including a 22-square-meter cooking area, opened early last month. Students can use cookware and appliances (electric equipment) such as pans, ovens, and freezers, and various stuffs, like cooking oil, salt, and sugar, for free-all provided by the university. All they have to prepare is the basic ingredients (食材), such as meat and fresh vegetables. “The three-day holiday was too short for us to return to our hometowns, so we decided to spend the festival together on campus. We all felt bored of the dining halls and take-out food. The newly opened shared kitchen has given us a space to cook for ourselves.” The shared kitchen has quickly gained popularity with students and it is hard to find an available stove, especially during meal times. “We had to book it a week in advance,” Huo said. The six young students worked for nearly three hours in the kitchen to cook eight dishes. “It was not as easy as we thought,” she said. The time spent in cooking has helped them communicate and cooperate more. “Compared with unhealthy take-out food, most college students desire hometown-style dishes or their favorite specialties, but it’s hard to find them in campus dining halls,” said Yi Guangcheng, director of the First Dining Hall. “The shared kitchen can help make their wishes come true. Meanwhile, it provides an opportunity to develop friendship and enrich social life. Delicious food is always a good bridge of communication,” he said. In addition to providing more convenience for the students, the shared kitchen also focuses on education, according to Ge Pengyue, director of the university’s food center. “It is a creative feature of the university in quality education. We hope students can learn the basic life skill of cooking before they step out into society.” 11 What’s the writing purpose of Paragraph 1? A. To offer an example. B. To introduce a topic. C. To make a comparison. D. To present an argument. 12. What does a student need to prepare before cooking in the shared kitchen? A. Pans. B. Salt. C. Ovens. D. Beef. 13. Which statement may Huo Zhiyi disagree with? A. Some students were bored of take-out food. B. The holiday was too short for her to return home. C. Cooking turned out to be easy for her and her friends. D. The shared kitchen was well-received among students. 14. Which benefit of the shared kitchen is NOT mentioned in the passage? A. Enriching social life. B. Developing friendship. C. Increasing the sales of take-out food. D. Learning the basic life skill of cooking. 15. What’s the author’s attitude towards the shared kitchen? A. Unclear. B. Positive. C. Negative. D.
