Socks are very useful. They can keep our feet warm and safe. But some people don’t have socks. A place for homeless people in West Tennessee needed socks very much. Brad Montague heard about this and wanted to help.
In 2010, Montague worked as a volunteer (志愿者) at a middle school in Henderson, Tennessee. He told the students there about the problem. They thought of an idea together: Socktober. They asked people to give new socks in October. This idea was a success. They got so many socks that Montague’s car couldn’t hold them all. Montague also gave socks to homeless people on the street and said, “Happy Socktober!” He wanted other places to join in too. He put information about giving socks on the Internet. This made other people in Tennessee want to do the same thing.
Now, Socktober has been around for almost 15 years. People in every state in the U.S. have sock drives. They also happen in Canada, Australia, and India. People do this every year. Montague said, “Anyone can do it. Everyone needs socks, and it’s easy to share them.” Schools also like Socktober. Many students try to make money to buy socks for it. Some sell drinks, some collect bottles, and others find other ways to help. Montague thanks everyone who helps.

Scientists in China have developed (研发) the special robot to help visually impaired (有视力障碍的) people. It has six legs and can act as a “guide dog” for people who can’t see.
In China, there are over 17 million visually impaired people, but there are only about 400 real guide dogs to help them. It is very hard and expensive to train guide dogs, so most visually impaired people don’t have one.
The new robot can help solve the problem. It can do many things. For example, it can know what the person is saying and act quickly; it can find the right way to go. What’s more, the robot can be used as a helper at home and call for help if needed.
To make the robot work well, the scientists gave it many senses (感官). It can see, hear, speak and feel. In this way, the robot can know what the person wants to do and work together with him. The robot’s six legs also make it more stable (稳固的) than other robot dogs with just four legs.
Fei, a visually impaired woman, tried out the robot during a test. She said that when it guided her, she could walk straighter than she did on her own. The developers have already gotten orders for 20 of the robots. Soon they could be helping many visually impaired people in China.

During the break times between classes, Xiao Jingsheng from Beijing Shangdi Experimental School often went to the toilet then back to class with no time for anything else. But now that is different. “I can have more time to rest and share interesting things with my classmates,” said the 14-year-old.
“Starting this autumn term, students at primary and middle schools in Beijing have a longer break between two classes, from 10 minutes to 15 minutes, so students can spend more time outside.
To help children better enjoy break-time activities, some schools mixed break time with labor education by opening planting areas and animal breeding zones (饲养区).
“We have welcomed new friends to our school—some ducks and rabbits!” said Zhang Boren, a 13-year-old from Beijing 101 Middle School Kuangda Campus. “During the breaks, some play with these cute animals, while others exercise on the playground. We get closer to nature, which is refreshing (令人耳目一新的) and relaxing.”
As the break time is longer, making sure everyone is safe (安全的) is also important. P. E. teachers in schools keep an eye on students playing on the ground.
“Sometimes the ground can be wet in the morning, so we tell the students to do more upper body exercises to avoid (避免) running and falling down,” said one P. E. teacher.

Look at this robot in the picture. What do you think it is for?
