Adventure. New experiences. Interesting people. Read about other people’s exciting travels around the world with these three books.
Is That Bike Diesel, Mate?: One man, one bike and the first Lap Around Australia on Used Cooking Oil by Paul Carter
There are lots of ways to travel around Australia. You could do it by plane, train or car. But author Paul Carter decided to tour the country on a homemade motorcycle that runs on cooking oil. Why? the author worked in the oil industry for many years, and was keen to explore alternative fuels. So, he bought the unusual bike from a group of Australian university students (who had built it themselves)and set off. On route, he has lots of amusing experiences. He almost dies in a crash and he even attempts to break the land speed record for a motorbike running .
You Are Awful (But I Like You) Travels Through Unloved Britain by Tim Moore
Travel writers usually go to the best destinations. But not Tim Moore. In the book, Tim travels to the worst places in the UK. Follow him as he heads to “the bleakest towns, the worst hotels and the scariest pubs”. And to make matters worse, he does it in the middle of winter. “My primary challenge was to have a good time in places that everyone had said I wouldn’t,” said the author. And he does meet lots of quirky characters and discovers that even Britain’s ugliest parts have an inner beauty.
Coasting: A Private Voyage by Jonathan Raban
In 1982, author Jonathan Raban bought a boat and navigated Britain. And this is the book about his adventure. Along the way he gets caught in a few storms, explores seaside towns and even takes his aging parents along for part of the journey. Raban also uses his time at sea to think about how 1980s Britain is changing under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

A. He breaks the land speed record.
B. He uses an unconventional fuel.
C. His aging parents accompanies him.
D. His motorcycle almost dies in a crash.
2. What challenge does TimMoore face while traveling in the UK?
A. Searching for alternative fuels.
B. Surviving heavy storms at sea.
C. Enduring the freezing cold in winter.
D. Enjoying himself in unattractive places.
3. What do the three books have in common?
A. They share practical travel advice for tourists.

B
Recently, campaigners have encouraged us to buy local food. This reduces “food miles”, that is, the distance food travels to get from the producer to the retailer. They reason that the higher the food miles, the more carbon emissions. Buying local food, therefore, has a lower carbon footprint and is more environmentally friendly.
However, the real story is not as simple as that. If our aim is to reduce carbon emissions, we must look at the whole farming process, not just transportation. Other processes, including fertilization, storage, heating and irrigation, contribute much more.
In fact, imported food often has a lower carbon footprint than locally grown food. Take apples for example. In autumn, when apples are harvested, the best option for a British resident is to buy British apples. However, the apples we buy in winter or spring have been kept refrigerated for months, and this uses up a lot of energy. In spring, therefore, it is more energy- efficient to import them from New Zealand, where they are in season. Heating also uses a lot of energy, which is why growing tomatoes in heated greenhouses in the UK is less environmentally friendly than importing them from Spain, where the crop grows well in the local climate.
We must also take into account the type of transport. Transporting food by air creates about 50 times more emissions than shipping it. However, only a small proportion of goods are flown to the consumer country, and these are usually high value, perishable items which we cannot produce locally. Even then, these foods may not have a higher carbon footprint than locally grown food. For example, beans flown in from Kenya are grown in sunny fields using manual labour and natural fertilizers, unlike in Britain, where we use oil-based fertilizers and diesel machinery. Therefore, the total carbon footprint is still lower.
It’s also worth remembering that a product’s journey does not end at the supermarket. The distance consumers travel to buy their food and the kind of transport they use will also add to its carbon footprint. So driving a long way to shop for food will negate any environmental benefits of buying locally grown produce.
Recently, some supermarkets have been trying to raise awareness of food miles too. But ultimately, the measures are too simple. Lots of different factors contribute to a food’s carbon footprint besides the distance it has travelled.
4. Why is importing apples from New Zealand more energy-efficient for British residents in spring?
A. It reduces food miles.
B. British apples are in short supply.
C. New Zealand apples are cheaper.
D. British apples have been stored under energy-consuming conditions.
5. Which of the following statements is correct according to the passage?
A. All imported food has a higher carbon footprint than locally grow n food.
B. Beans flown in from Kenya have higher carbon footprints than grown in Britain.
C. Transporting food by air always results in a higher carbon footprint than growing local food.
D. Only considering food miles is an oversimplified way to assess a food’s environmental impact.
6. The underlined word “negate” in paragraph 5 probably means ________.
A. enhance B. ignore C. cancel out D. misunderstand
7. What is the author’s attitude towards buying local food?
A. Strongly supportive. B. Completely opposed.
C. Cautiously skeptical. D. Somewhat indifferent.
C
Overseeing the development of a literary culture which is part of a critic’s job, is a process of fits and starts. Critics play a role in determining which books published today should be labeled “instant classics”, which books are best described as “little-known” and which books published in past decades or centuries deserve re-examination. Beginning in the early 20th century, reissues complicated those categories. Older books like “The Dud Avocado” and “Stoner” — and even “Moby-Dick” and “The Great Gatsby” — became more famous upon reprinting than they had been when originally published.
The canon (文学经典) itself is in a constant, ongoing process of being shaped by book lovers who are often in disagreement not only about what qualifies as literature but also about the purpose of reading literature. A reissue, more often than not published after the author is dead, rebalances the purpose of literature away from writer intent and more toward reader intent.
Early last year, the small magazine n+1 restated a longstanding policy: No dead people. Reading work from dead authors may be unavoidable, but as literary critics tasked with creating and shaping the conversation, writing about dead people was considered unacceptable — because it was unfair to expect that contemporary writers, already struggling to secure attention for their work, compete with dead writers. We need, n+1 argued, to “refocus the public’s attention on the under-read work of the living.”
It’s true that the literary world — perhaps egged on by editors, publishers and critics alike — frequently talks about reviving unjustly ignored voices from the depths of history, trying to ensure they are rescued from being forgotten. We don’t reissue the work of dead authors in order to do right by them, but because their work is a piece of history. We need to understand literature in its own right and as an expression of its own time and context, even if that context is horrifying or uninviting or problematic. Reading well — and writing good criticism — brings a sense of wonder to history, and despite the emotional influences that may sometimes inspire reissues, they uniquely connect us to the past, which will always be important.
8. What does the author indicate by mentioning the older books in paragraph 1?
A. Reissues make sorting harder. B. Reissues never boost popularity.
C. New editions show more changes. D. Critics should recategorize reissues.
9. What can we say about a reissue from paragraph 2?
A. It is made to a consistent standard. B. It causes disagreements among readers.
C. It breathes life into forgotten literary works. D. It shifts the literary focus toward readers’ needs.
10. What effect did n+1 expect from its policy?
A. Inspiring living writers to learn from dead writers. B. Bridging the divide between critics and writers.
C. Making more living writers’ voices heard. D. Making critics less hard on living writers.
11. How does the author look at reissuing dead authors’ works?
A. A way to correct past injustices against authors. B. A method to celebrate authors’ contributions.
C. A means to obtain insights into the history. D. A strategy to maintain literary traditions.

One of the world’s greenest office buildings will formally open its doors this week. It’s a project of the environmentally progressive Bullitt Foundation. Its ambition is bold: to showcase an entirely self-sustaining office building hoping that others will create similar projects.
The first thing that strikes you about the new Bullitt Center is an emphasis on walking. “In a building this size, any place else in Seattle it would have two elevators. Here, the stairway is obvious and attractive,”says Denis Hayes, CEO of the foundation. He explains there is an elevator, but it’s well-hidden. The staircase encourages exercise and the concept helps cut down on energy use.
This is one of dozens of visionary decisions that went into this building. “It has eyes, ears, a nervous system and a brain and it responds to its environment in a way that seeks to optimize (优化) things,” he says. He points across the street to a mini weather station. It sends data to the building so it can decide what it should do to conserve energy.
“I think it’s fair to say we were all a bit skeptical in the beginning, ”says Chris Rogers, the founder of a firm in cooperation with the foundation. Rogers and the others set out to meet the ambitious goals of the Living Building Challenge, a green building standard set by local architects.
Clearly this building is not for everyone. If you think of it as simply an office building, it was relatively pricey to design and build. But if you view it as a laboratory, an educational center and a bold effort to change how things are built, the calculation changes.
Still one could wonder, is it possible to build more with similar self-sustaining features at a reasonable cost? If this building isn’t reproducible, then this experiment will have failed, says Rogers. But if it is successful, he’s optimistic others will follow the foundation’s lead. Rogers points out that over the past couple of decades, many builders have been integrating green elements into their buildings.
12. What motivates the designers to highlight the stairway?
A. To beautify the building. B. To offer convenience.
C. To hide the elevator. D. To conserve energy.
13. Which description best summarizes the Bullitt Center according to paragraph 3?
A. A living organism. B. A first responder.
C. A brain system. D. A data base.
14. Which argument does Chris Rogers hold probably?
A. It is reasonable to hold doubt in the building’s future.
B. The building has been inspired by previous efforts.
C. The reproduction of the building is crucial.
D. The building stands for a progressive force.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Look Inside The World’s Greenest Building B. The Outlook For Green Buildings Is Promising
C. How Can We Build More Green Buildings? D. Will This Super Green Building Be Copied?

One day, Mrs. Green asked everyone about their dream jobs. The classroom suddenly got filled with eager voices as classmates enthusiastically shared their dreams. “I want to be a college professor,” said Sarah confidently. “I dream of becoming a basketball player,” exclaimed Mike with light in his eye. The air was filled with dreams of doctors, nurses, police and various professions.
When Mrs. Green turned her attention to me, inquiring about my future career, I hesitated. “I don’t know yet,” I admitted. Then she asked if I wished to follow in my dad’s footsteps. “No,” I replied firmly.
My dad is a distinguished doctor with a demanding schedule, who often finds himself engaged in the responsibilities of his job. Thus, he often return s home late in the evening. The limited time we spent together during my growth created a noticeable distance in our relationship. I had such a lot to complain about his job and thus being a doctor would be the last option I would take.
Upon hearing my response, Mrs. Green remained silent. Instead, she encouraged me to reflect further.
A turning point came when our school organized a cultural festival. It was an important event, and we had been preparing for it for a long time. For my role, I needed to purchase a costume. Unfortunately, my mother was abroad, so the responsibility fell on my father. Unwillingly, I agreed, acknowledging that there was no other choice.
In the mall, my dad’s unfamiliarity with the shopping list became apparent. Despite Mom’s thorough list, we wandered aimlessly through the floors, struggling to find the necessary items. As we did, I felt a growing sense of discomfort.
Suddenly, a chaos drew our attention. A crowd had gathered, and someone was shouting for help. It turned out that an elderly customer had a fall, and onlookers were at a loss on how to assist.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

The distance consumers travel to buy their food, and the kind of transport they use will also add to its carbon footprint.
【答案】4. D 5. D 6. C 7. C

【导语】本文是一篇议论文,讨论了购买本地食物是否真的更环保这一问题。
【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段中“However, the apples we buy in winter or spring have been kept refrigerated for months, and this uses up a lot of energy. In spring, therefore, it is more energy-efficient to import them from New Zealand, where they are in season. (然而,我们在冬季或春季购买的苹果已经冷藏了数月,这会消耗大量能源。因此,在春季,从新西兰进口苹果更节能,因为那里的苹果正当季。)”可知,这两句话明确指出英国在春季时,苹果已被冷藏数月,处于耗能状态,所以从新西兰进口苹果更节能。故选D。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第二段中的“If our aim is to reduce carbon emissions, we must look at the whole farming process, not just transportation. (如果我们的目标是减少碳排放,我们必须考虑整个农业生产过程,而不仅仅是运输。)”以及最后一段中的“Lots of different factors contribute to a food’s carbon footprint besides the distance it has travelled. (除了食物运输的距离之外,还有许多不同的因素会影响食物的碳足迹。)”可知,只考虑食物里程来评估食物对环境的影响过于简单,与D选项相符。故选D。
【6题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章第五段“It’s also worth remembering that a product’s journey does not end at the supermarket. The distance consumers travel to buy their food, and the kind of transport they use will also add to its carbon footprint. (同样值得记住的是,产品的旅程并不在超市结束。消费者购买食物所走的距离以及他们使用的交通方式也会增加食物的碳足迹。)”以及“So driving a long way to shop for food (开车很远去购买食物)”可知,所以,会使得购买本地种植产品的任何环境效益都无效。“negate”表示使无效,与“cancel out (抵消)”意思相近。故选C。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“However, the real story is not as simple as that. (然而,实际情况并非如此简单。)”以及文章第五段“It’s also worth remembering that a product’s journey does not end at the supermarket. The distance consumers travel to buy their food, and the kind of transport they use will also add to its carbon footprint. (同样值得记住的是,产品的旅程并不在超市结束。消费者购买食物所走的距离以及他们使用的交通方式也会增加食物的碳足迹。)”及全文可知,文章通过分析不同因素对食物碳足迹的影响,可以看出作者的谨慎怀疑态度。故选C。

Overseeing the development of a literary culture, which is part of a critic’s job, is a process of fits and starts.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. C 11. C

【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“Beginning in the early 20th century, reissues complicated those categories. Older books like “The Dud Avocado” and “Stoner” — and even “Moby-Dick” and “The Great Gatsby” — became more famous upon reprinting than they had been when originally published.(从20世纪初开始,重新发行使这些分类变得复杂。像《烂鳄梨》和《斯通纳》这样的老书,甚至《白鲸》和《了不起的盖茨比》,在重印后比最初出版时更出名。)”可知,作者提到老书在重新分类发行后更出名,是为了说明重新发行会加大分类难度。故选A项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“A reissue, more often than not published after the author is dead, rebalances the purpose of literature away from writer intent and more toward reader intent.(重新发行往往是在作者死后才出版,它重新平衡了文学的目的,使其远离作者的意图,更倾向于读者的意图。)”可知,重新发行把文学的焦点转向了读者的需要。故选D项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Early last year, the small magazine n+1 restated a longstanding policy: No dead people.(去年年初,小型杂志《n+1》重申了一项长期政策:不接受死人。) ”和“We need, n+1 argued, to “refocus the public’s attention on the under-read work of the living.”(《n+1》认为,我们需要“把公众注意力重新集中到那些被忽视的活着的人的作品上”。)”可知,《n+1》期望从其政策中让更多在世作家的声音被听到。故选C项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“We don’t reissue the work of dead authors in order to do right by them, but because their work is a piece of history.(我们重新发行已故作者的作品不是为了对他们做正确的事,而是因为他们的作品是一段历史。)”可知,作者认为重新发行已故作者的作品意味着获得对历史的洞察。故选C项。

Still, one could wonder, is it possible to build more with similar self-sustaining features at a reasonable cost? If this building isn’t reproducible, then this experiment will have failed, says Rogers. But if it is successful, he’s optimistic others will follow the foundation’s lead. Rogers points out that over the past couple of decades, many builders have been integrating green elements into their buildings.
12. What motivates the designers to highlight the stairway?
A. To beautify the building. B. To offer convenience.
C. To hide the elevator. D. To conserve energy.
13 Which description best summarizes the Bullitt Center according to paragraph 3?
A. A living organism. B. A first responder.
C. A brain system. D. A data base.
14. Which argument does Chris Rogers hold probably?
A. It is reasonable to hold doubt in the building’s future.
B. The building has been inspired by previous efforts.
C. The reproduction of the building is crucial.
D The building stands for a progressive force.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Look Inside The World’s Greenest Building B. The Outlook For Green Buildings Is Promising
C. How Can We Build More Green Buildings? D. Will This Super Green Building Be Copied?

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
57. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Without hesitation, my father rushed forward.

For the first time, I felt a sense of pride in his work.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Without hesitation, my father rushed forward. He pushed through the crowd, his demeanor calm and collected despite the chaos around him. Kneeling beside the elderly customer, he quickly assessed the situation and instructed bystanders to call an ambulance. With gentle hands, he comforted the frightened old man, assuring him that help was on the way. As he tended to the injured, my father’s expertise as a doctor shone through, and I couldn’t help but be impressed. His actions spoke louder than any words ever could, showing me a side of him I had never seen before. The crowd dispersed, and when the ambulance arrived, my father carefully explained the situation to the paramedics before they took the elderly man away. Standing there, watching him, I realized that being a doctor wasn’t just about long hours and sacrifices; it was also about making a difference in people’s lives.
For the first time, I felt a sense of pride in his work. As we walked out of the mall, I couldn’t help but ask him about his experiences as a doctor, and he shared stories of the moments that had brought him joy and fulfillment. I listened intently, seeing him in a new light. That night, when he returned home late, instead of feeling annoyed, I greeted him with a hug and thanked him for what he did. From then on, our relationship began to mend, and I found myself looking up to him in a way I never had before. My perspective on his job changed, and I realized that being a doctor wasn’t just a demanding profession; it was a calling that allowed him to touch lives and make a real impact. As I grew older, I even found myself considering following in his footsteps, inspired by his dedication and compassion.
