Arctic foxes live on the land and sea ice within the Arctic Circle (北极圈). Winter in the Arctic is quite different. From October to February, the sun never rises to shine warmth and light.
Luckily, these small foxes have a wonderful ability to live in the icy Arctic. Their thick fur coat and long furry tails keep the body warm. Their feet also have thick fur like built-in snow boots. This makes their prey (猎物) harder to hear their footsteps. And their white coats make it difficult for predators such as wolves, polar bears and golden eagles to find them among the ice and snow.
When it’s not trying to keep warm or avoid predators, an Arctic fox is on the hunt for food. They prefer to eat small lemmings, but when times are difficult they’ll eat whatever they can find: insects, berries, and even the droppings of other animals. Sometimes an arctic fox will follow a polar bear on a hunting trip and eat the bear’s leftovers.
If a fox can’t find food, or if the weather gets really bad, it can dig a den (兽穴), it can slow down its heart rate and metabolism (新陈代谢). This helps the animal save energy so it doesn’t have to eat as much.
Once the animal comes out of its den, it’ll try to hunt again. With food in its belly, the Arctic fox has a better chance of making it through another long, dark water.

Shenzhen is trying very hard to make itself more bird-friendly.
As part of this try, the city has introduced many ways to stop birds from crashing (撞击) onto the glass buildings. For example, Tencent, as an important company in Shenzhen, puts wave-point stickers (波点贴纸) outside its Binhai Building to help birds out.
However, Tencent workers found that there were still a number of bird crashes even with the stickers. In their experiment, five birds crashed and dropped, and another six birds even died because of crashes in a short time. To solve this problem, Tencent decided to develop more ways to stop bird crashes.
Tencent has made a WeChat miniprogram to encourage more companies to join in the bird protection. The miniprogram includes ways to stop bird crashes. It also provides suggestions for people on how to save the injured (受伤的) birds or to get help for them in time.
Besides special stickers, Shenzhen has also used nighttime light rules to make a safer environment for city birds. Because the birds’ sleep cycle begins around 8 p. m., people turn off the park lights during the night. This helps create a better environment for birds and other wildlife.

Do you know mosquitoes (蚊子)? They live almost all over the world. The number of mosquitoes isn’t high if a city has many cold days and nights. But if the city has a lot of rain and the weather is warm, there are a lot of mosquitoes. Well, when the weather gets about 32℃, they will become less active. When the air is dry and windy, it is also hard for them to live.
Even the Arctic (北极地区) has a large number of mosquitoes. During summer, the temperature of some places there can be over 30℃. It is comfortable for mosquitoes to live there. Also, mosquitoes have few enemies (敌人) in the Arctic. They can grow bigger than those in other places.
▲ That is Iceland. The weather there is quite hard for mosquitoes to live. Usually, the adult mosquitoes lay eggs (产卵) in water or near it. If the weather is hot enough, the baby mosquitoes will become adult mosquitoes soon. However, the weather is cool even in summer in Iceland. And because the weather changes a lot, the eggs of mosquitoes can’t grow up.

Do you know ChatGPT? It’s an artificial intelligence (AI) tool. It can answer questions, tell stories, and write articles. But it’s very “thirsty”, said a new study from Harvard University.
ChatGPT has “homes” around the world in data centers (数据中心). When it works, the computers at the data centers get very hot. Workers then have to use water to cool them down. Cold water goes into pipes near the computers. The water needs to be very clean. They can’t use seawater because it can eat away at the pipes.
When you ask ChatGPT 50 questions, it “drinks” 500 milliliters (ml) of water. Scientists used 700,000 liters of water to build ChatGPT. The water use is very big. People can make 370 cars with it.
ChatGPT is just one of the AI tools around the world. You need data centers to do everything on the Internet. There are more than 8,000 data centers around the world. The number is still growing.
AI uses a lot of water to “grow”. The world’s water may not be enough. Many people don’t have enough water to drink. But AI technology helps people. Should we rethink how we use AI?

How do you communicate with your family and friends? A lot of people choose to use Mandarin (普通话) over dialects (方言) in daily lives these days. As a result, some local dialects are in danger of disappearing. To save them, the Chinese government started the Chinese Language Resources Protection Project a few years ago.
This project looks at how people talk in 1,712 places. Their languages include 103 dialects that are almost gone. It has helped China to build the largest language resource library in the world. There’s an online library where people can learn dialects from over 5.6 million audio clips (音频) and over 5 million videos.
Scholar Zhang Hongming talked about his worries. “For about over 10 years, in the Wu dialect areas such as Shanghai and Suzhou, children aged 6 to 15 can understand but hardly speak the dialect. Meanwhile, young people above 15 years old sometimes speak it, but not very well. If this keeps happening, the dialect might disappear,” he said.
So how did China make this big library? A big national effort has been put into the project to make it happen. Over five years, more than 4,500 experts and more than 6,000 dialect speakers joined in. The project is now entering into its second part. This includes creating tools like apps and mobile dictionaries to help people learn dialects.

Studying in the US, I have seen many fun examples of US high school culture.
Every Friday, our school’s football team plays against other schools’ football teams, either at our school or at another school nearby. Students buy tickets to support their school team or to just hang out with friends.
Homecoming is a tradition celebrated every year in the US. At homecoming, a school welcomes back former students. That is where the name comes from. It means, “coming home”. Homecoming dances are hosted every October. During the homecoming week, students dress up according to the school’s theme(主题), including pajama (睡衣) day, twin day, dress-like-your-younger-self day and others. Then on the Saturday of homecoming week, there is the homecoming dance! Students wear dress shirts, bow ties or dance dresses.
Junior 3 and Senior 3 students also have a Prom(毕业舞会). I have never been to Prom before, but I’ve learned that Prom is a much more formal(正式的) dance to celebrate graduation(毕业). For homecoming, girls usually wear knee-length dresses. But for Prom, most people will go for a longer, more formal dress.
