How To Safely Put Out A Kitchen Fire
In less than a minute, a kitchen fire can grow beyond your control. The following will help you when it happens.
If you can, turn off the heat source. You must shut off a fire’s source of energy as quickly as possible, as long as you can do so safely. This will depend on where the fire is and where your gas control knobs (开关) are. If you can’t safely reach the knobs, don’t try.
Cover with a lid (盖子) or a wet sheet. Try to carefully slide a lid or a wet sheet over the stovetop (炉头) fire, both of which will prevent the fire from oxygen and, hopefully, kill it.
Consider escaping and calling 911. The moment you realise the fire is out of your control, it’s time to run, and call 911 if you haven’t already.
1. What should be done before you shut off the knobs?

What do pets do when their owners are not around? The Secret Life of Pets seems to answer this question. It imagines what pets do when they are left alone at home. In this film, some steal food from the fridge, some play games all day and some even go out of their apartments for an adventure.
Obviously, these are imagined scenes. In fact, the everyday lives of pets are actually rather boring. According to Alexandra Horowitz, director of the Dog Cognition Lab at Barnard College in the US, pets don’t have independent lives when their owners leave.
Horowitz explained that the time when their owners are away is not the time when pets come into themselves. It is when they are waiting for their owners to return so they can continue normal programming. Pets sleep for most of the time when left alone in empty apartments. Even when they are awake, they spend a lot of time just waiting around, especially if they are dogs.
Cats are generally more independent than dogs. A team from the UK put GPS collars (项圈) on 50 cats in a Surrey village, keeping them under 24-hour watch. Specially-designed cameras were also attached to the cats to offer their view of the world. The team found that the cats spent most of the time in each other’s houses and eating each other’s food, and some walked about 100 metres from home each day.
4. What is The Secret Life of Pets?
A. An adventure. B. A game. C. A film.
5. What do pets do when their owners are away according to Horowitz?
A. They enjoy an independent life.
B. They steal food from the fridge.
C. They wait for their owners to return.
6 How did the UK team know that cats are more in dependent?
A. By playing games with them.
B. By interviewing their owners.
C. By watching them day and night.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. Why Are Cats More Independent Than Dogs?
B. What Do Pets Do When Their Owners Are Away?
C. How Are Pets Watched By The Researchers?

The ancient Chinese used timber frames (木构架) and pounded earth (夯土) to build homes and palaces. Different pieces of the building were supported in different ways, so that no one wall supported the whole house. There is an old saying, “Chinese houses will stand when their walls fall down.”
The inside of buildings of all sorts were decorated with flower designs and peaceful things found in nature. The ancient Chinese also used a glaze to paint walls and ceilings (天花板) for protection against water and for added beauty.
The courtyard was an important part of all ancient Chinese buildings, from the simplest farmhouse to the biggest palace. The rich could afford a big courtyard surrounded on three sides by wings of a home and the fourth side guarded by a gate, to create a private courtyard. However, the poor built several small houses around an open space, creating a shared courtyard.
The main door into the building always faced south. The ancient Chinese believed that the proper building materials, a private courtyard, and a front door facing south all together offered beneficial energy to those who lived there.
The ancient Chinese were very clever people. Their love of beauty and belief in nature were reflected in their architecture (建筑), even in the simplest of homes.
8. What do we know about ancient Chinese buildings from the old saying?
A Its feature. B. Its appearance. C. Its development.
9. What does “glaze” probably refer to in the text?
A. A special material. B. A beautiful flower. C. A peaceful picture.
10. What can we learn about the courtyard of the rich?
A. It has three sides. B. It has four guards. C. It has a private space.
11. Where might this text come from?
A. A fashion website. B. A culture magazine. C. A short-story collection.

If you have ever had the feeling that your school kids were smarter than you—or at least capable of picking up new information and skills faster—a new study of Brown University suggests you are absolutely right. The study also offers a reason: kids and adults present differences in GABA in their brains, which maintains newly learned material.
It is often assumed that children learn better than adults, although the scientific support has been weak. Differences in GABA were one obvious place to look for answers. In previous studies, GABA in kids had only been measured at one time-point. So, the researchers set out in the new study to see how GABA levels change before, during, and after learning.
The study examined visual (视觉的) learning in primary school age children and adults, and found that visual learning led to an increase of GABA in children’s visual cortex (大脑皮层), the brain area that deals with visual information. That increase of GABA also remained for several minutes after training ended. What they saw in adults was quite different. In adults, there were no changes in GABA levels.
Although children’s brains are not yet fully developed and many of their behavioural and understanding functions are not as advanced as in adults, children are not weaker in their abilities than adults. In fact, children are, at least in some aspects, better than adults. It should add further encouragement for teachers and parents to give children more opportunities to acquire new skills.
12. What is newly found about kids by Brown University?
A Kids acquire knowledge faster than adults.
B. Kids learn better with the help of adults.
C. Kids prefer newly learned material.
13. What can we learn about GABA from the text?
A. Increase of GABA helps learning better.
B. Adults have a rapid change in GABA.
C. GABA has never been studied before.
14. What causes an increase in children’s GABA?
A. Learning time. B. Visual learning. C. Learning skills.
15. What does the study suggest teachers and parents do?
A. Be strict with children.
B. Slow down their teaching.
C. Give kids more chances to learn.
