B 18. A 19. C 20. B
M: Larry Walters is among the relatively few who have actually turned their dreams into reality.
Larry was a driver, but his lifelong dream was to fly. When he graduated from high school, he joined the Air Force in the hope of becoming a pilot. Unfortunately, poor vision disqualified him. So he had to satisfy himself with watching others fly the jets over his backyard.
Then one day, Larry bought a tank of helium and 45 weather balloons. Back in his yard, Larry tied the balloons to his lawn chair. He anchored the chair to his jeep and inflated the balloons with helium. Then he packed some sandwiches and drinks.
When his preparations were complete, Larry sat in his chair and cut the anchoring string. His plan was to lazily float up to a height of about 30 feet above his backyard, where he would enjoy a few hours of flight before coming back down.
When Larry cut the string, he didn’t float lazily up — he shot up! He didn’t level off at 100 feet, nor did he level off at 1,000 feet. He leveled off at 16,000 feet! Eventually, the hanging strings caught in a power line, blacking out a Long Beach neighborhood for 20 minutes. As soon as he hit the ground, he was arrested.
As he was being led away in handcuffs, a television reporter Robert Davies called out to ask, “Why did you do it?” Larry replied, “One can’t just sit around and do nothing!”
Seriously, though ... What are you doing today to make your dreams come true?

LONDON- Britain prepares for a vote Thursday that will decide whether it leaves the European Union. The debate has centered on immigration and economic security. Both sides have lowered the tone of their arguments after a three-day suspension(暂停) of campaigning that followed the murder of an anti-Brexit lawmaker, an incident that polls(民意调查) suggest has shocked many previously undecided voters who now say they will vote to remain.
These are uncertain times in a nation whose economy is the second largest in the European Union. The risks are huge. There are warnings that leaving the 28-member group may cause the British pound to lose 15 percent of its value and bring the resignation(辞职) of David Cameron, the country's prime minister; his stay or not depends on whether Britain listens to him and votes to remain.
For months, the Leave campaign has been hitting the streets. Its arguments are based largely on immigration, and the belief that Britain has handed control of its borders(边界) to a European super state: "The U.K. has lost control over migration. We have to accept anyone into this country if they have an EU passport, no matter if they have a criminal record or not. We are not allowed to say 'no' to people and that is damaging for the security of the U.K., but it is also putting pressure on jobs and opportunities for young people," said Tom Harwood, a Brexit campaigner.
The murder of Jo Cox, an anti-Brexit, pro-immigrant lawmaker by a far right extremist(极端分子) with a history of mental problems had a serious effect on both campaigns, and on voters.
Polls since the June 16th murder showed the Leave camp losing ground, but with both sides still very close on a referendum(全民投票) that many believe could change the course of European history.
24. What does the underlined word " Brexit" in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Break the law of the European Union.
B. Break away from the European Union.
C. Build the exit to the European Union.
D. Ban the immigration into Britain.
25. What is implied from the passage?
A. The immigration has caused great concern in Britain.
B. Brexit will be good for British economy.
C. Both camps have been campaigning and debating on the streets for months.
D. The murder of Jo Cox made many voters determined to vote for the exit.
26. Which of the following statement is true?
A. Britain will leave the European Union after the vote.
B. Anyone with a passport can choose to stay and work in Britain.
C. Whether Cameron will resign depends on the result of the referendum.
D. Jo Cox was murdered by a Brexit campaigner in June 16m.
27. What's the attitude of the report to the event of Brexit?
A. Positive B. Negative C. Indifferent(漠不关心的) D. Concerned.
B 25. A 26. C 27. D

Morogoro, Tanzia, British research scientist, Dr. Donna Kean is training 170 rats to be sent into earthquake ruins to do vital work in finding earthquake survivors. The project has trained about seven rats to date, taking around two weeks to get the rescue rats up to speed. These rescue rats are sent into mock(模拟的)earthquake ruins with tiny backpacks that contain microphones, video gears, and location trackers. These tools will allow the rescue teams to communicate with earthquake survivors in real-time.
“I train these clever creatures to save victims trapped in collapsed buildings after earthquakes. We kit them out with a rat backpack, and train them to activate a switch when they find a victim and come back for a tasty treat. ” posted Dr Donna Kean on Twitter on May 26, 2022.
Dr. Kean expressed how the rescue rats are ideal for this type of work saying, “Rats would be able to get into small spaces to get victims buried in rubble. ” The highly swift rats never set off landmines and their natural swiftness makes them ideal for use in hard-to-navigate disaster zones. Their suitability for this work goes further, with rats being good at surviving in different environments and living off of anything. The rescue rats are even being trained to respond to beeps that call them back to their base.
Dr. Kean's team collaborates(合作) with the non-profit organization APOLO for their “Hero Rats” project. These “Hero Rats” are set to start working with a search and rescue team in Turkey, joining earthquake rescue efforts in the high-risk area. The group of 170 rats is being trained for additional projects involving landmines, tuberculosis (肺结核), and even sniffing out Brucellosis, an infectious disease that impacts farm animals. Dr. Kean feels hopeful about her project’s promising results and is excited to be the only organization in this space working with this species.
28. Why are the rescue rats equipped with backpacks?
A. To monitor the rats.
B. To locate the survivors.
C. To record the rescue process.
D. To keep track of the survivors.
29. According to the passage, what can a trained rescue rat do?
A. Set off landmines accurately.
B. Dig out those buried in rubble.
C. Figure out the signal from beeps.
D. Complete the task without a reward.
30. What make(s) rats outweigh other animals in this project?
A. Their efforts in training.
B. Their nature of rescuing.
C. Their eagerness for survivals.
D. Their adaptability to environments.
31. What can be inferred about the “Hero Rats“ project?
A. The results fail to prove the potential.
B. The rats have to be trained repeatedly.
C. The project probably pioneers in the space.
D. The rats have been widely used in various fields.

“Are you OK, Cassie?” Jonah asked, from the doorway of the Sea Holly Cafe.
Cassie had been sitting on a chair outside for the past 10 minutes, but not really taking in the beauty of the sea.
“Oh, I should be getting back to work.” She rose hurriedly.
“We’re not busy, take your time.” Jonah came with a cappuccino for her. “Thanks.” She accepted the coffee, “Everything’s fine.” Then Jonah nodded, revealing a comforting smile, and went back inside.
He was a great boss, but Cassie didn’t feel like telling him what was wrong.
Cassie had gone to study fine art hopefully but dropped out after only a year due to the unbearable homesickness. Since then, she hadn’t touched her paints for a whole year. Today was doomed to be a sad date, the anniversary of her exciting plans turning to dust. She felt a crushing sense of disappointment. In her painting, she had captured a good likeness of the cloudy sky and the reflection of the dying light upon the water, but the picture did have a sad, dreary (沉闷的) quality.
About 20 minutes later, she was shocked by a voice at her shoulder, “That’s beautiful.”
Cassie turned, and there was a woman wearing a blue coat. The woman eyed it again. “You have talent, but there is much sadness in it, for one so young.” Cassie’s eyes were filled with tears. “My name’s Willow,” the woman said kindly, “Why not try painting the sunrise instead, my dear? You might find it helps.”
With Willow’s words echoing in her brain, Cassie rose an hour earlier the next day, caught a bus to the beach and began to paint again.
When she finished, Jonah was just opening up. He picked the painting up and appreciated it at eye height. “Hey, this is good. It’s really —“For a moment he struggled for the word, then found it and turned to her, beaming, “Optimistic!”
In her picture the sun was powering into the sky, casting a clear, golden pathway across the sea.
32. Which of the following best explains “He was a great boss” underlined in paragraph 5?
A. Jonah offered a coffee to Cassie.
B. Jonah ran a successful cafe business.
C. Jonah figured out what was wrong with Cassie.
D. Jonah was considerate of Cassie’s emotional upset.
33. What led to Cassie’s low spirits?
A. That her paints were covered with dust.
B. That her homesickness was aroused again.
C. That her original plan was abandoned midway.
D. That her painting was full of a sorrowful and dull quality.
34. Why did Willow advise Cassie to paint the sunrise?
A. It was more beautiful. B. It might cheer Cassie up.
C. It had artistic inspiration. D. It made a difference to Willow.
35. What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A. The Sun Always Rises B. Every Man Has Its Price
C. Strike While the Iron Is Hot D. A Good Medicine Tastes Bitter
D 33. C 34. B 35. A
第四段““We’re not busy, take your time.” Jonah came with a cappuccino for her. “Thanks.” She accepted the coffee, “Everything’s fine.” Then Jonah nodded, revealing a comforting smile, and went back inside. (“我们不忙,慢慢来。”乔纳给她端来一杯卡布奇诺。“谢谢。”她接受了咖啡,“一切都很好。”然后乔纳点了点头,露出安慰的微笑,然后回到了里面。)”,可知Jonah作为老板很体贴,注意到Cassie的情绪不安,并给予安慰。故选D项。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段前三句“Cassie had gone to study fine art hopefully but dropped out after only a year due to the unbearable homesickness. Since then, she hadn’t touched her paints for a whole year. Today was doomed to be a sad date, the anniversary of her exciting plans turning to dust.
根据第八段女士说的话““You have talent, but there is much sadness in it, for one so young.” Cassie’s eyes were filled with tears. “My name’s Willow,” the woman said kindly, “Why not try painting the sunrise instead, my dear? You might find it helps.”
根据最后一段“In her picture the sun was powering into the sky, casting a clear, golden pathway across the sea. (在她的照片中,太阳直射天空,在海面上投射出一条清晰、金色的路径。)”可知,这张关于日出的图,充满了希望,这给予了Cassie重新获得对生活的积极的态度,故sunrise“日出”是文章中重要的意象。又因为几个选项的意思如下:选项A“The Sun Always Rises (太阳照常升起)”;选项B“Every Man Has Its Price(天生我材必有用)”;选项C选项“Strike While the Iron Is Hot (趁热打铁)”;选项D“A Good Medicine Tastes Bitter (良药苦口)”。故选A项。

Constant conversations and messages make it harder to focus and could start stressing you out.(收到这么多短信,你是不是开始觉得有点累了?持续的交谈和信息会让你更难集中注意力,并开始给你带来压力)”以及后文“We’ll start with ways to choose and enforce your boundaries if someone tries to reach you when you’re not available.(如果有人在你不在的时候试图联系你,我们将从选择和加强你的界限的方法开始)”可知,后文提到在别人试图联系你时,选择和加强你的界限,即限制回复信息的频率来减少压力。
根据上文“Make a clear schedule each day for when you check your messages and are available to have a conversation.(每天制定一个明确的时间表,什么时候查看信息,什么时候有空聊天)”以及后文“It’s okay to read the texts you get during your leisure time, but don’t respond to them until you’re scheduled. Let anyone who would try to contact you know about your availability so they’re less likely to disturb you in the future.(在空闲时间阅读你收到的短信是可以的,但在安排好时间之前不要回复。让任何想联系你的人知道你有空,这样他们以后就不会打扰你了)”可知,上文提到制定查看和聊天的时间,即设定时间来回复信息,故E选项“给自己设定时间来缓解立即回复的压力”符合语境,故选E。
【38题详解】
根据上文“Change your settings so you can’t use apps when you run out of time. Set a time limit for how long you can use your messaging apps. Sometimes you may run out of time.(更改你的设置,这样当你没时间时就不能使用应用程序。设定一个使用即时通讯应用程序的时间限制。有时你可能快没有时间)”可知,上文提到。设定一个使用即时通讯应用程序的时间限制,且提到没有时间,故本句承接上文说明使用这些应用程序的情况,C选项中the apps对应上文中messaging apps。故C选项“你可能要到第二天才能使用这些应用程序”符合语境,故选C。
【39题详解】
根据本段内容“Changing your boundaries can be tough, so keep strengthening them. Even though you may still get a lot of text messages, stick to the limits you set for yourself so you don’t stress yourself out or feel the need to reply. Otherwise, if you keep responding when you said you’re unavailable, other people might be confused or get mixed messages.(改变你的界限可能很难,所以要不断加强它们。即使你仍然会收到很多短信,也要坚持你为自己设定的限度,这样你就不会给自己带来压力,也不会觉得有必要回复。否则,如果你在说你没空的时候一直回复,其他人可能会感到困惑或收到混淆的信息)”可知,本段的主旨是遵守底线,A选项中boundaries对应后文中boundaries。故A选项“遵守自己的底线”符合语境,故选A。
【40题详解】
根据上文“Don’t hesitate to cut off communication if they still won’t listen. Some people may not understand your boundaries no matter how often you remind them. If you’re still bombed with messages throughout the day, silence the person or turn off notices from the app they use so you don’t get notified.(如果他们仍然不听,不要犹豫,切断交流。有些人可能不理解你的界限,无论你提醒他们多少次。如果你一整天都被信息轰炸,让对方静音或关闭他们使用的应用程序的通知,这样你就不会收到通知)”可知,上文提到一些人忽视你的界限,不断信息轰炸,本句为本段最后一句,应说明上文做法的作用:把自己从压力中拉出来。故F选项“避免回复那些人以及他们的信息,这样你就能把自己从压力中拉出来”符合语境,故选F。

Yesterday, when I complained with my mom about too little entertainment, she share the story of her youth with me. In the 1980s, neither iPads nor smartphones were invented. Each time when evenings approached, the children around would crowd into the only house where had a television. We stared at the small screen until the program ended. Parent would make every effort to drag their children to bed when it was getting lately. But now, iPads and smartphones have taken place of televisions. No wonder my mom always says we are the generation growing up in a honey jar. After listen to my mom’s story I felt lucky to live so a happy and comfortable life.
【答案】1. with→to 2. share→shared 3.删除when 4. where→that 5. We→They
6. Parent→Parents 7. lately→late 8.place 前加 the 9. listen→listening 10. so→such
表示向某人抱怨用complain to somebody表示,故将with改为to。
分析句子结构可知,“where had a television”是定语从句,先行词是house(房子),指物,在定语从句中做主语,且house前有only来修饰,只能用that不能用which,where在定语从句中作状语,故将where改为that。
take the place of是固定搭配,表示“取代”,故在place前加the。

A To monitor the rats.

In her picture the sun was powering into the sky casting a clear, golden pathway across the sea.
