Now, around seventy years after the birth of the book, an American director has found a way to make it into a 3D animated film (动画片).

The farming TV program Believe in the Land has been winning the hearts of its young audiences. It has received over 30 thousand comments on Douban and has got 8.9 points out of 10.
In the show, 10 young people get together as a team. They must work hard for 190 days on a 9.5 hectare farm to grow 25, 000 kilograms of crops.
This is China’s first farming-themed show. Before this, the British farming show Clarkson’s Farm was popular among Chinese audiences. Clarkson, a rich man with no farming experience, ran his farm with funny and changing ideas. It made people laugh and showed the challenges of farming. Believe in the Land shares something similar by showing the farming experiences of 10 young people.
Some other “slow TV programs” also show famous people living in the countryside. But Believe in the Land stands out as it shows not only the beauty of countryside life, but also the hard work behind it.
The young people started from zero to make their own tools and furniture. They lived in a small, old house near the fields, wore dirty clothes in the mud and worked for a whole day.
“Although the young people didn’t do it perfectly, their experience of working in the muddy fields and unloading tons of fertilizer (肥料) moves the audiences.” wrote an Internet user on Douban. “Watching their hard work makes me understand the saying ‘you reap what you sow (一分耕耘,一分收获)’ more than ever.” another audience wrote on Sina Weibo.
17. Why does Believe in the Land stand out among the farming shows?
A. Because it makes people laugh and shows the challenges of farming.
B. Because it tries to teach young people many farming experiences.
C. Because it shows the beauty of countryside and the hard work.
D. Because it is much better than the British one.
18. What is the young people’s life like in the show?
A. They live in a big old house near the fields.
B. They have to work almost all day long.
C. They live a comfortable life.
D. They don’t need to make the tools and furniture by themselves.
19. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Believe in the Land was created by the ten young people themselves.
B. Clarkson is a rich man with much farming experience.
C. The ten young people did a perfect job in the show.
D. The show is touching and can make people think deeply.
20. What’s the purpose of this passage?
A. To teach the audiences some useful farming skills.
B. To introduce a popular farming-themed TV program.
C. To call on people to go back to live in the countryside.
D. To explain the value of farming.
D
Buck did not read the newspapers. He did not know that trouble was coming for every big dog in California. Men had found gold in the Yukon, and these men wanted big, strong dogs to work in the cold and snow of the north.
Buck lived in Mr Miller’s big house in the sunny Santa Clara valley. There were large gardens and fields of fruit trees around the house, and a river nearby. In a big place like this, of course, there were many dogs. There were house dogs and farm dogs, but they were not important. Buck was chief dog; he was born here, and this was his place. He was four years old and weighed sixty kilos. He went swimming with Mr Miller’s sons, and walking with his daughters. He carried the grandchildren on his back, and he sat at Mr Miller’s feet in front of the fire in winter.
But this was 1897, and Buck did not know that men and dogs were hurrying to north-west Canada to look for gold. And he did not know that Manuel, one of Mr Miller’s gardeners, needed money for his large family. One day, when Mr Miller was out, Manuel and Buck left the garden together. It was just an evening walk, Buck thought. No one saw them go, and only one man saw them arrive at the railway station. This man talked to Manuel, and gave him some money. Then he tied a piece of rope around Buck’s neck.
Buck growled, and was surprised when the rope was pulled hard around his neck. He jumped at the man. The man caught him and suddenly Buck was on his back with his tongue out of his mouth. For a few moments he was unable to move, and it was easy for the two men to put him into the train.
When Buck woke up, the train was still moving. The man was sitting and watching him, but Buck was too quick for him and he bit the man’s hand hard. Then the rope was pulled again and Buck had to let go.
That evening, the man took Buck to the back room of a bar in San Francisco. The barman looked at the man’s hand and trousers covered in blood.
“How much are they paying you for this?” he asked.
“I only get fifty dollars.”
“And the man who stole him—how much did he get?” asked the barman
“A hundred. He wouldn’t take less.”
“That makes a hundred and fifty. It’s a good price for a dog like him. Here, help me to get him into this.”
They took of Buck’s rope and pushed him into a wooden box. He spent the night in the box in the back room of the bar. His neck still ached with pain from the rope, and he could not understand what it all meant. What did they want with him, these strange men? And where was Mr Miller?
The next day Buck was carried in the box to the railway station and put on a train to the north.
— Taken from The Call of the Wild

On stage, Wang always takes on a totally different look. For a 27-year-old, half of her life has been spent singing Yueju Opera, which is the most popular opera style following Peking Opera in China. Standing on the stage, she pours herself into the stories, and also adds her own dreams and feelings to the characters she plays.
With the support of her parents, Wang left home at 13 and went to Shanghai to learn Yueju Opera. She said that she did not understand what Yueju Opera was until the second year when she watched Romance of the Western Chamber (西厢记), a Chinese classic. She was deeply touched by the story. That was the moment when she fell in love with the art form she was going to devote herself to. She was trained to play the roles of young men in Yueju Opera since the very beginning and has now grown into an excellent actress in Sbanghai Yueju Opera House.
Wang did a lot for Yueju Opera. On the stage, she tried her best to play a good role. “It could be that among people who come into the theater to watch our show, many come for the first time. A small mistake made on the stage might leave them with a bad feeling of Yueju Opera,” she said.
However, compared with other popular art forms such as modern drama and talk shows, Yueju Opera is still not very familiar to most people. As a result, off the stage, Wang makes some videos to introduce the art of Yueju Opera to young people online. “I really hope to find a way to open a door for people of my age to fall in love with Yueju Opera,” said Wang.

There were large gardens and fields of fruit trees around the house and a river nearby.
“And the man who stole him—how much did he get?” asked the barman.
The next day Buck was carried in the box to the railway station and put on a train to the north

I remember when I was in the third grade of elementary school, my teacher asked me to participate in the rope skipping competition. Because I was not good at rope skipping, I wanted to give up this opportunity. But both my teacher and mother encouraged me to participate in this competition. Since then, I have been practicing skipping rope every morning and evening. I jumped faster and faster. On the day of the competition, I won the first prize.
