Now Earth Day is celebrated around the world. We still face many challenges, such as climate change, plastic pollution, and deforestation. But we can all make a difference.
Her Trees Save Lives
Adeline Tiffanie Suwana was 12 when her family’s home flooded. Indonesia, her island nation, is often hit hard by floods and other natural disasters.
Adeline learned that mangrove trees play a key role in flood protection and rallied classmates to plant 200 trees during a school break. They started a group called Sahabat Alam or Friends of Nature, which works to conserve the region’s biodiversity and combat climate change.
Today. Adeline attends university, studying how businesses can help the environment.
Teens’ Two-Fold Invention
EPS—expanded polystyrene foam—is the white, lightweight stuff used to make things like takeout food containers, foam egg cartons, and packing “peanuts”. But it takes up a lot of space and is difficult to recycle. EPS breaks into small pieces as it floats down waterways into oceans, harming wildlife along the way.
Eighth-graders Julia Bray, Luke Clay, and Ashton Cofer looked at EPS’s chemical makeup and saw that it was mostly carbon. That sparked an idea. Could they turn it into activated carbon, a material that filters toxins from water?
After 50 hours of experiments, including one that accidentally set the family grill fire, they succeeded!
Solar for Her School
When Claire Vlases of Montana was in seventh grade, she learned about plans to expand and modernize her middle school. Claire asked the school board to add solar panels to the project. The board liked the idea but said it could contribute just $25,000, one-fifth of the cost. So Claire organized a group of kids and adults who set to work raising the rest.
They asked for donations, even going door-to-door for them. And they appealed to charitable foundations too. One even donated half the cost!
After two years of hard work, the group paid for the solar panels, which now supply one-fourth of the school’s electricity needs.
21. What do the three groups of teenagers have in common?
A. They are Earth-helping heroes. B. They are from island countries.

My son just, turned 14 and does not have a smartphone. When he graduated from Grade 8, he was the only kid in his class without one. He asks for a phone now that he’s going to high school. I say no, he asks why, I explain, and he pushes back.
“You can choose to do things differently when you’re a parent, ” I told him. But sometimes, I wonder if I’m being too stubborn or unfair.
The more I research, the more confident I feel about my decision. Many studies link the current mental health crisis among adolescents to fundamental changes in how they socialize, namely, the shift from in-person to online interaction.
But other mothers challenge my view. “He must feel so left out!” Then there are the parents who tell me sadly that they wish they had delayed their teenager’s phone ownership longer than they did. They urge me to hold out.
If teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18 are truly spending an average of 8 hours 39 minutes per day on their devices, as stated in a survey conducted by Common Sense Media, then what are they not doing? Kids absorbed in their devices are missing out on real life, and that strikes me as really sad.
I want my son to have a childhood he feels satisfied with and proud of. I want it to be full of adventures, imaginative play and physical challenges which he must sort himself out without asking me for help. The easiest and simplest way to achieve these goals is to delay giving him a smartphone.
Some think my son is missing out or falling behind, but he is not. He does well in school and extra-curricular activities, hangs out with his friends in person, and moves independently around our small town. He promises he’ll give his own 14-year-old a phone someday, and I tell him that’s fine. But recently, he admitted that he missed the beautiful scenery on a drive to a nearby mountain because he had been so absorbed in his friend’s iPad. If that is his version of admitting I’m right, I’ll take it.
24. What is the author primarily concerned about regarding giving her son a phone?
A. Her son’s online safety. B. Her son’s mental growth.
C. Her son’s reduced physical activities. D. Her son’s poor academic performance.
25. What quality does the author want her son to develop in his childhood?
A. Leadership. B. Team spirit. C. Independence. D. Critical thinking.
26. What can be learned about the author’s son?
A. He is falling behind academically. B. He is easily influenced by his friends.
C. He has given up his desire for a smartphone. D. He has realized the problems of much screen time.
27. How does the author feel about her decision not to give her son a phone?
A. Regretful. B. Hesitant. C. Justified. D. Guilty.

When you eagerly dig into a long-awaited dinner, it’s traditionally believed that signals from your stomach to your brain stop you eating so much. However, a research team recently discovered that it’s our sense of taste that immediately pulls us back from eating food overly on a hungry day. Stimulated by the perception of flavor, a set of brain cells become active to quickly curtail food intake.
Previous studies have suggested that the food taste may control how fast we eat, but it’s been impossible to study relevant brain activities during eating because brain cells that control this process are located deep in our brains, making them hard to access or record in an awake animal. New techniques developed by the team allowed for the first-ever imaging and recording of a brainstem structure critical for feeling full, called NTS, in an active mouse.
The new study found that when researchers put food directly into the mouse’s stomach, brain cells called PRLH were activated by signals from the gut (消化道), in line with traditional thinking. However, when they allowed the mice to eat the food as they normally would, those signals from the gut didn’t show up. Instead, the PRLH brain cells switched to a new activity pattern that was entirely controlled by signals from the mouth. “It’s astonishing that these cells were activated by the perception of taste,” said researchers. “It shows that there are other components of the appetite-control system that deserves our attention.”
The PRLH-activated slowdown also makes sense in terms of timing. The taste of food allows PRLH to switch their activity in seconds. In contrast, another group of brain cells, called CGC, takes several minutes to respond to signals from the gut. The good thing is that CGC can hold back hunger for a much longer time. These two sets of brain cells interact to work together: one uses taste to slow down eating, while the other signals that you are full.
Understanding how body signals regulate appetite could improve weight-loss programs for the overweight by making use of interactions between signals from different brain cell sets.
28. What does the underline word “curtail” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Activate. B. Limit. C. Expand. D. Assist.
29. What is the limitation of previous studies according to paragraph 2?
A. Inadequate technologies.
B. Inefficient funds.
C. Unqualified professionals.
D. Improper methods.
30. What did the new study find about PRLH brain cells when the mice normally ate?
A. They helped stimulate the mice’s appetite.
B. They encouraged the mice to speed up eating.
C. They were activated by signals from the mouth.
D. They were controlled by signals from the stomach.
31. What is the function of CGC brain cells?
A. To slow down eating speed.
B. To improve the digestion system.
C. To extend the feeling of fullness.
D. To interact with signals from taste.

Want to know what is coming soon to a cinema near you? Probably not a 1.5-hour-long movie, as in the old days. On October 20th comes Killers of the Flower Moon. At nearly three and a half hours, its length is nearly double that of the average film last year. Even movie fans struggle to concentrate for that long and some viewers even nod off. Afterwards there is a mad dash for the toilets. When does watching a film become such a slog?
The Economist analyzed over 100,000 feature films released internationally since the 1930s, the start of Hollywood’s golden age, using data from IMDb, a movie database. The average length of productions rose by around 24%, from one hour and 21 minutes in the 1930s to one hour and 47 minutes in 2022. For the ten most-popular titles, the average length grew to around two and a half hours in 2022, nearly 50% higher than in the 1930s.
One driver of this trend is that studios want to squeeze the most out of their costly intellectual property (知识产权), but they are competing with streaming platforms for eyeballs. The hope is that a spectacular, drawn-out “event” movie will draw audiences away from the small screen and into cinemas. This approach has often paid off: Avengers: Endgame Marvel’s three-hour superhero masterpieces, was the highest-grossing (票房最高的) film in 2019. Last year long movies series made up most of the highest-grossing films in America.
Another explanation for longer films has to do with directors’ growing influence. Who would dare tell the likes of Mr. Nolan to cut out his masterpieces? Moreover, streaming platforms, which do not have to worry as much about the length because viewers can pause whenever they like, may attract big names by promising them sufficient fund and creative freedom. Netflix funded and released three-hour The Irishman in 2019, a film that would have benefited from a decisive editor, Irish or otherwise.
32 The underlined part “a slog” in paragraph 1 refers to a(n)___.
A. pleasure B. effort C. conflict D. feast
33. What can be inferred from paragraph 2?
A. The average length affects the popularity of films.
B. Great advances have been made in film industry.
C. Hollywood starts a golden age of feature films.
D. The average duration of movies has stretched.
34. What sets the trend of longer movies?
A. Competition for the target audience. B. Thirst for more classic productions.
C. Influence of streaming platforms. D. Preference for decisive editors.
35. What is probably the best title for the passage?
A. Movie Enthusiasts B. Movie Marathons
C. Movie Production D. Movie Influence

It was my first long race - marathon. The wind and the rain chilled (使很冷) me to the bone and the sun was yet out to warm up the air. The starting gun would go off any second. I was ready. I was 28 and in the best shape of my life. At least, I thought I was. I ran all the time and had already run several races. But none of them was 26.2 miles. The farthest I had run before was only 15 miles. Still, I was young and overconfident and I knew I could do it.
The gun went off and the race started. I was excited and the weather became the furthest thing from my mind. I just concentrated on holding my own position among the other runners. I had no real finishing goal in mind, but when I settled into my pace, I soon worked out that I could easily break 4 hours.
Within a few miles, I ran past an elderly runner. He must have been over 70 years old and I was surprised he was even in the race. I was even more surprised that he was still ahead of me. He kept to the side of the road, his old legs moving one in front of the other, slowly but stably. I passed him without giving him a second glance or a word of encouragement.
I kept moving. 15 miles came and I was on pace to beat 4 hours. Then something strange happened. I started to get tired. My goal of 4 hours soon got pushed back to 4:10. Then 4:20. Finally, at about the 20-mile mark, I couldn’t run any more. I had to walk.
I moved to the side of the road and with difficulty I walked along. I needed a second wind, but it wasn’t coming. The rain was back. There was nothing I could do about it but concentrate on putting one foot in front of the other.
Then the elderly man passed me. He looked the same as he had earlier, running at the same speed. As he passed, he looked over at me and smiled, “Only a few more miles to go. Don’t give up now!”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Thinking of being beaten by an elderly man, I moved on.

W: Hi, Dave. How are you? I hope my call is not interrupting your Canada trip.
M: No worries. Actually, I’m back in England now. We are in the same country. I got back here from France 2 days ago.
W: You went to France after Canada, didn’t you?
M: Yes, that’s correct.
W: Then, how was the trip in Canada?
M: It was very good. I flew to Toronto and stayed there for a few days. At first I was really worried about my accommodation because I kept reading terrible stories about rental flats going all wrong.
W: I had a disastrous experience in Barcelona, Spain. The place didn’t look anything like the photos. The accommodation was very expensive.

W: Sounds pretty cool. What’s the city like?
M: It’s nice. It’s a modern city. It’s really clean. There are lots of parks. What impressed me most was the multiculturalism. We visited Chinatown, Little Italy, Greektown... I can’t remember the others.
W: How was meeting your uncle? The famous Uncle George.
M: That was great too. He lives outside of Toronto , in a cottage by a lake.
W: I’m dying to see photos. You want to meet up soon? Or are you still feeling tired from the flight?
M: I’m actually available tomorrow if you like.

Now, Earth Day is celebrated around the world.
C. They are high school students. D. They are keen on experiments.
22. How much did one of the charitable organizations donate for solar panels?
A. $25,000. B. $50,000. C. $62,500. D. $125,000.

A. Regretful. B. Hesitant. C. Justified. D. Guilty.
B 25. C 26. D 27. C

根据文章第六段中“I want it to be full of adventures, imaginative play and physical challenges which he must sort himself out without asking me for help. (我希望它充满冒险、富有想象力的游戏和身体上的挑战,他必须自己解决这些问题,而不需要我的帮助。)”可知,作者希望儿子在童年时期能培养独立性。故选C项。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段中“But recently, he admitted that he missed the beautiful scenery on a drive to a nearby mountain because he had been so absorbed in his friend’s iPad. If that is his version of admitting I’m right, I’ll take it. (但最近,他承认,在开车去附近一座山的路上,他错过了美丽的风景,因为他太专注于朋友的iPad了。如果这是他承认我是对的,我就接受。)”可知,作者的儿子发现沉迷于iPad,导致错过了路上的美景,说明他已经意识到屏幕时间过长的问题。故选D项。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段中“The more I research, the more confident I feel about my decision. (我研究得越多,对自己的决定就越有信心。)”和文章第六段中“The easiest and simplest way to achieve these goals is to delay giving him a smartphone. (实现这些目标最简单的方法就是推迟给他智能手机。)”以及文章最后一段中“But recently, he admitted that he missed the beautiful scenery on a drive to a nearby mountain because he had been so absorbed in his friend’s iPad.
C They were activated by signals from the mouth.
D. They were controlled by signals from the stomach.
31. What is the function of CGC brain cells?
A. To slow down eating speed.
B. To improve the digestion system.
C. To extend the feeling of fullness.
D. To interact with signals from taste.
B 29. A 30. C 31. C
根据划线单词上一句“a research team recently discovered that it’s our sense of taste that immediately pulls us back from eating food overly on a hungry day.(一个研究小组最近发现,在饥饿的日子里,我们的味觉会立即把我们从过度进食中拉回来。)”
根据文章第二段“Previous studies have suggested that the food taste may control how fast we eat, but it’s been impossible to study relevant brain activities during eating because brain cells that control this process are located deep in our brains, making them hard to access or record in an awake animal. New techniques developed by the team allowed for the first-ever imaging and recording of a brainstem structure critical for feeling full, called NTS, in an active mouse.(之前的研究表明,食物的味道可能会控制我们吃东西的速度,但研究进食过程中相关的大脑活动是不可能的,因为控制这一过程的脑细胞位于我们大脑的深处,很难在清醒的动物身上获得或记录它们。研究小组开发的新技术首次对活动小鼠的脑干结构NTS进行了成像和记录,该结构对饱腹感至关重要。)”中的“new techniques”可推测,以前的研究的局限性是因为技术不足。故选A。
根据文章第三段“However, when they allowed the mice to eat the food as they normally would, those signals from the gut didn’t show up. Instead, the PRLH brain cells switched to a new activity pattern that was entirely controlled by signals from the mouth. “It’s astonishing that these cells were activated by the perception of taste,” said researchers. “It shows that there are other components of the appetite-control system that deserves our attention.”(然而,当他们让老鼠像往常一样吃这些食物时,这些来自肠道的信号就没有出现。相反,PRLH脑细胞切换到一种完全由口腔信号控制的新活动模式。研究人员说:“令人惊讶的是,这些细胞被味觉激活了。”“这表明食欲控制系统中还有其他组成部分值得我们关注。”)”可知,当老鼠正常进食时,PRLH脑细胞切换到一种完全由口腔信号控制的新活动模式,也就是说这些细胞被味觉激活了。故选C。
【31题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段“The good thing is that CGC can hold back hunger for a much longer time.(好消息是,CGC可以在更长的时间内抑制饥饿。)”
D
32. The underlined part “a slog” in paragraph 1 refers to a(n)___.
A. pleasure B. effort C. conflict D. feast
B 33. D 34. A 35. B

A. Because因为;B. 根据空后“it was a dictionary intended for non-native learners, none of my classmates had one”可知,前面表示这本英英字典是为非母语学习者设计的,主句表示作者的同学都是非母语学习者,却没人使用这样的字典,由此前后为转折关系。
根据空前“to be honest”及下文“I would look up words in the dictionary and ___4___ not fully understand the meanings.”、“I was used to the familiar bilingual (涉及两种语言的) dictionaries”可知,应该是个负面评价,查了字典却仍然不能完全理解这个单词,由此可知,作者会觉得这本字典很难用,更习惯双语字典。故选A项。
A. thus因此;B. even甚至;C. still仍然;D. again再一次,又。根据空前“I would look up words in the dictionary”及空后“not fully understand the meanings.”
A. explained解释,讲解;B. expressed表达;C. described描绘,描写;D. created创造。 故选A项。
A. offered提供;B. agreed同意;C. decided决定;D. happened发生。根据文章开头“When I first entered university, my aunt, who is an English professor, gave me a new English dictionary. I was ___1___ to see that it was an English-English dictionary”可知,阿姨送他一本英英字典,作者觉得很难用,他认为阿姨决定给他这样的字典就是决定把事情变得困难,作者不理解为什么。
A. imagine想像;B. recommend推荐;C. predict预言,预测;D. understand理解。根据上文“I found it extremely ___3___ to use at first”、“I really wondered why my aunt ___6___ to make things so difficult for me”及“Now, after studying English at university for three years”可知,之前作者认为英英字典很难用,不理解阿姨的用心,三年后作者应该是理解了英英字典的好处。
根据上文“I found it extremely ___3___ to use at first”、“I really wondered why my aunt ___6___ to make things so difficult for me”及下文“Using a monolingual dictionary for learners has helped me in another important way.”
根据下文“My aunt even goes so far as to declare that a Chinese “equivalent” can never give you the ___10___ meaning of a word in English!” 故选A项。
根据上文“As I found out, there is, in fact, often no perfect equivalence (对应) between two ___9___ in two languages.” 故选A项。
A. However然而;C. Therefore因此;D. 根据上一句“My aunt even goes so far as to declare that a Chinese “equivalent” can never give you the ____10____ meaning of a word in English”可知,阿姨认为,英语单词是不可能用汉语准确地解释清楚的,本句中阿姨让我查阅单语词典中的英文解释弄清楚英语单词的意思,前后为因果关系。
A. when当…… 前面“I read the definition (定义) of a word in a monolingual dictionary”及后面从句“I wanted to get a better understanding of its meaning.” 故选A项。
A. 根据后文“I have come to see what she meant.”
根据上文“This dictionary uses a limited number of words, around 2,000, in its definitions.” 故选A项。
A. According to依据;B. In relation to与……有关;C. In addition to除……之外;D. Because of由于,因为。空后“I can express myself more easily in English.”

故填how。

故填who/that。

Dear John,

Yours,
Li Hua
Dear John,
Having received your congratulations on my winning first prize in the activity “Chinese Stories Retold in English”, I’m writing to express my heartfelt thanks for your concern and introduce the story-Chinese Silk.
Dating back to the Western Zhou period, Chinese silk has a long history of over 3,000 years. Legend has it that Leizu, the wife of the Yellow Emperor, discovered the silk-making process. There was an ancient trade and communication route called “the Silk Road”, promoting the exchange of ideas and goods between China and other civilizations. Soft and elegant, Chinese silk has a significant economic impact and plays a crucial role in cultural exchanges.
The activity has not only deepened my understanding of Chinese culture, but also strengthened my courage to speak English. I hope you can come to China to experience our culture.
Yours,
Li Hua
Dear John,
I hope you’re doing well. Thank you very much for your kind congratulations on my first prize win in the “Chinese Stories Retold in English” event at our school.
The story I presented was about the fascinating legend of Mulan, a brave young woman who disguises herself as a man to take her father’s place in the army. It’s a tale of courage, loyalty, and sacrifice, resonating deeply with Chinese culture and values. Throughout her journey, Mulan overcomes numerous challenges and ultimately proves her worth as a warrior.
Participating in the event was a truly rewarding experience for me. It enabled me to explore Chinese folklore and history while also enhancing my proficiency in English communication. The opportunity to share this timeless story with the audience was thrilling.
Yours,
Li Hua

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Thinking of being beaten by an elderly man, I moved on.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
He crossed the finish line ahead of me and I was soon to follow.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Thinking of being beaten by an elderly man, I moved on. As I said, I was young and proud, and this little setback didn’t matter much to me. So, I was determined to finish it. The elderly man had run ahead of me, but I could still see him in the distance. I tried to catch up with him, but no matter how hard I tried, I wasn’t getting any closer. I would not give in. Soon, I was running at a good pace with my second wind, but the elderly man still stayed just out of my reach.
He crossed the finish line ahead of me and I was soon to follow. I never had such mixed emotions. I was proud of finishing the marathon but I was angry with myself for being beaten by the elderly man. It was only later on that I realized how much I admired him. I’ll never forget the senior citizen runner who put the proud 28-year-old in his place. Some day I hope to be like him, running marathons in my 70’s and passing all those first-times as they struggle to finish. I’ll make sure to give them encouragement.
